on the brink.

jake seresin x reader (wc: 2.6k)
summary: having children was never on the table. you never had the maternal instinct that most girls seemed to have growing up and you had no interest in the mundane tasks that came with acting as a mother in a plastic playground house. but when you're forced to choose between your husband's and your own dreams, the decision gets a little bit more complicated. aka the unplanned pregnancy fic that no one asked for
warnings: angst, unplanned pregnancy, mentions of abortion
author's note: okay i know this is not the fic that i've been promising yall, but i swear i'm working on it. this is pretty different than a lot of things that i've written before. a bit of self expression and indulgence if you will so just bear with me (if you hate it don't tell me)
————————————————————————
"I'm never having kids," you had admitted suddenly into the darkness of the cabin, staring up at the ceiling. The waves lapped at the sides of the ship, swaying the carrier just slightly. There was nothing, not even the faint footsteps of a sailor patrolling on night duty overhead, just the sounds of the vast open sea all around.
You could practically hear Bradley's eyebrows furrow, his voice of surprise coming out a bit loud considering the sailors that slept all around you. "Why?"
"Isn't that what you said to Maverick?" you retorted.  "'No wife, no kids to mourn you when you burn in'?"
Even in the dimly lit bunk room, you could see Bradley sit up, his broad figure washed in blue moonlight. "That's not— Maverick's a—"
"A man?"
Bradley doesn't answer.
"Fuck you, Bradshaw."
As the years progressed, that was the typical response you received when you expressed your reluctance to have children. After a while, you grew used to it, being made out to be a monster, being told you would change your mind. You knew you wouldn't of course, but your act of considering the suggestion eased the consciences of those who thought they had carried out their duty of convincing you otherwise.
You never had the maternal instinct that most girls seemed to have growing up. You had no interest in the mundane tasks that came with acting as a mother in a plastic playground house or pushing a doll in a stroller. Because you never leave that plastic playground house. Not even when you grow up do you escape those four suffocating walls.
Because once you become a mother, that is all you are. Because that's who a mother is. Someone who devotes every single waking moment of the rest of their lives sacrificing for their children. Who you were before, your past, your achievements, that's not who you are anymore. You are 'Mom', 'Mommy', 'Mamma'.
You give it all up to be a mom. Because there is nothing worse than an absent mother. You had experienced it first hand, and you wouldn't do that to your children.
Your mother sacrificed to be a mom. But there wasn't a day that she let you forget it.
One thing you feared was the havoc it would wreck on your career. You were selfish in that way. Setting aside your career was not an option, not when you had worked so hard for so long. On top of being in the military, not wanting children was another blaring red flag. The combination didn't exactly lend itself to many dating opportunities.
Therefore, when you first met Jake, you weren't looking for anything serious. You knew how these kinds of things went. It would be fine at first. He'd be smitten with you, enamored even. You'd see each other for a while, maybe even start dating if things got that far. And then more serious conversations would happen, and he'd realize that no man wants to marry a woman who puts herself first.
Except Jake didn't seem to mind.
"Okay," he had replied without much hesitation. Dare you say without any hesitation.
"Okay?" You echoed in response, the confusion in your voice evident.
He'd shrugged, tipping back the last of his beer before standing up. "Yeah. Okay." You craned your neck to follow him. Jake stopped in front of you, leaning over to peck your lips. "We'll figure it out, okay?" And then he'd turned to take his righteous place at the dart board, as if it was as easy as that.
And for a while it almost was.
The Uranium mission came and went, deployments passed, and it all was just that easy. With the Commander of the Pacific Fleet on your side, it was never too hard to get assignments relatively near to each other, and even then, Jake was only ever a flight away. Even in the years before the two of you got around to getting married, when your chances of getting deployed halfway across the country from each other were high, it was all just so easy.
It was laughable how well things worked out between you and Jake. And maybe that sort of ease came with being in the same line of work and understanding the stress of the job, but even outside of that, life with Jake was ridiculously simple. As strange as it was to admit, your life didn't change drastically when Jake came into it. Jake liked to sleep by the door so the left side of the bed was still yours, Jake got off of work at the same time as you so you weren't stuck waiting around for someone to come home, he didn't speak to his family much so there were never any obligatory family gatherings to attend, and like you, he was in no rush to buy a home or get married. The only reason the two of you did finally get around to getting married was because Nat was convinced the two of you would just stay engaged forever and so she planned the whole ceremony herself. And there was no saying no to Nat.
Even after you married Jake, nothing changed. You moved in together sure, and with that came the assurance that you'd be the first person the Navy notified if anything ever happened to him and the same for you, but that was about it. All of the terrible things people warn you that will happen once you move in with your partner never happen. It's so fucking easy.
Until it isn't.
Jake is away on a mission when you start having symptoms. Not really even symptoms, just a bit of nausea here and there, an odd feeling in the pit of your stomach. Call it intuition if you will, but you know something is wrong. You dismiss it at first, put it off because you can. It's only once you start puking after every early morning hop that you come to terms with the fact that you've been avoiding the truth. And as much as you'd like to pretend like it isn't happening, you have to do something. You make an appointment at a clinic for the following week.
You wait until Jake's stateside to tell him. Not because there's any decision for you to make, or that you want to give him the opportunity to change your mind because you know he won't, but because you're established enough in your relationship that you know that this isn't going to change anything. As Jake had reassured you years ago, it was okay. You'd figure it out.
Jake had gotten back home early in the morning, but because you'd been assigned an early hop and then agreed to take on some of the newer pilots in some dogfighting, most of the day has passed by the time you're leaving base and you've still yet to see him. Just as you're grabbing your things and leaving the locker room, planning on calling him on the way to the clinic, he catches you in the hall.
You're mid stride when he saunters around the corner, moving with just enough comfortable confidence in his walk that it comes off as cocky, like he owns the place and hasn't been gone for a month. Jake breaks out into a grin. "Ah just who I was hoping to see."
"Jake!" you state in surprise, barley registering who he is before he wraps an arm around you, pulling you into a long overdue hug. One of his large hands comes up to pet your hair, the other squeezes your waist. Relaxing, you breathe him in, musky and familiar. You've been slightly on edge all day and a hug from him was just what you needed.
Phoenix huffs from behind you, breaking the silence. "That's funny because I was hoping not to see you, Bagman." The gleam in her eyes is affectionate. The Dagger Squad has remained close in the following years but that's not to say that old rivalries fade.
Jake releases you from the embrace for the most part but keeps his heavy arm draped across your shoulders, holding you close. "You been takin' care of my wife, Trace?" he asks, his voice warm and heavy.
Natasha glares at him playfully over her shoulder as she pushes past the two of you. "She was my wife before she was yours, Seresin. You stay gone too long again and I might steal her back."
You smile privately to yourself as they banter back and forth, watching as Phoenix finally disappears down the hallway. For a moment you forget about what you're about to do. Jake looks down at you, his grin stretching widely across his face, once again as he squeezes you in close. "Ready to head home?" he asks, his arm dropping from around you so that he can grab your bag.
Suddenly you hesitate, the words caught in your throat.
Immediately, Jake's smile falters just slightly, his brow creasing in worry as he steps back towards you. "It's everything okay? Did something happen?"
A sudden on rush of tears are stinging at your eyes and you struggle to get the words out of your closing throat.
"I think I'm pregnant, Jake."
At first you can't tell what he's thinking because the look on his face becomes immediately serious. His smile vanishes and his brow lifts in surprise. "Oh."
"Oh?"  You echo, panic that you hadn't thought existed rising in your throat. Was he angry?
"No, I mean, fuck, that's great, baby," he quickly clarifies, reaching out to take your hand. "I just wasn't expecting that."
You stare at him, your panic rising even more now. Because that was not what you were expecting. "Great? No, it's not great. What do you mean, great?! I thought you said you didn't want kids?!"
Jake shrugs, throwing his hands up slightly in exasperation. "I mean maybe I didn't at one point, but things change, (Y/n). This isn't a bad thing."
Your eyebrows shoot up. Because this is quite possibly the worst thing that could have happened. "Are you kidding, Jake?! I can't be a mom! I'm a fucking fighter pilot!"
Now it's Jake's turn to look confused, like he's not quite sure where you're heading with this. Again, he shrugs, tossing up his hands. "So? I mean you would have to take some time off, but it's not unrealistic. People do it."
You look at him as if he's suddenly grown two heads. "Jake, you don't just "take time off" to raise a kid. That's not a temporary thing. That's the rest of my life."
Jake crosses his arms, going quiet for a moment before he sighs. "Okay, so quit. It's not like we need the money."
And suddenly everything you thought you'd ever known comes crashing down. There goes your career, your relationship, and the rest of your life. Your heart sinks to rock bottom in your chest because this is not how this was supposed to go. A broken, "What?" is all that escapes your cracked open chest.
Sensing your panic, Jake reaches out, his large, gentle fingers brushing your wrist. His voice is soft. "Look, I know this wasn't in the plans, but that doesn't mean it can't be. We could make it work."
You step back, pulling away from his outstretched hand as if he's burned you. "I can't believe that you would even suggest that," you say, the words 'so quit' ringing in your head. "Do you know how hard I worked to get to where I am right now?!"
Just being in the Navy as a female was hard. Even with going to the academy, the military was a man's world. You had to fight tooth and nail for every ounce of the respect that you deserved. And now to be here, where you are today at Top Gun, you've more than earned it.
Jake sighs heavily, his fingers coming up to pinch the bridge of his nose in frustration. "I'm not telling you to quit. It was just a suggestion since you seem to think that you can't do both."
It's then that you come to the realization that he doesn't get it. No one gets it.
"I don't think you understand, Jake. I don't fucking want to do it. I don't want to be a mom."
And to that, Jake doesn't say anything. He just stares at you, his usually warm green eyes void of the typical playful gleam that they hold. The two of you stand there in silence for a long time, allowing the the thick blanket of realization to finally settle over you.
"So that's it?" Jake finally asks, his voice sounding closed off and hurt. "I don't even get a say?"
"Don't try to guilt me here, Jake. You knew how I felt about this, and you still married me. So no, you don't get a say."
Jake looks down at his boots, hands braced on his hips as your words process. He swallows, and you know he's fighting the tears in his eyes. "Okay."
"Jake—"
He picks your bag back up from the floor and turns his back towards you, heading for the exit door. "Go do what you have to do, (Y/n). I'll see you at home."
——
When you get back home, Jake is sitting alone at the kitchen table. From the looks of the empty bottle of beer beside him, he's been there for a while. Head in his hands, as if to ward off a headache, he only looks up once you approach the table. His fingers twist at the ring on his left hand.
Quietly, you place the ultrasound prints on the table—face down so that you don't have to look at them. You open your mouth, the words 'six weeks' about to escape, when Jake holds up his hand.
"Don't— (Y/n). Just don't."
You know he's hurt and you understand why. But when it comes down it it, this is your life. No matter how much you love Jake, you aren't going to suffer with a child you don't want to have out of the obligation of your relationship. You cross your arms defensively in front of your chest. "Then what do you want, Jake? Because I don't know what to do," you admit.
Jake stares across the table at you, his gaze unflinching, before his eyes fall to the black and white prints.
"I'm all in, (Y/n). I meant that much when I married you." His fingers tug at the ring on his finger and this time it slips past the knuckle and into his palm. "Either you're in or you're out."
You stare at the golden band and his suddenly bare finger and realize that you hardly remember a time that it wasn't there. With your throat constricting, you look back up to the face of the man that you love.
"Jake," you begin, and your voice breaks as you say his name. "You're asking me to choose between you and my job. That's not fair."
Jake sighs. He sets the ring down on the table and stands up. You watch him with a sinking heart.
"It seems like a pretty easy choice to me," he says finally. "Because I would choose you every time."
The thought hits you that maybe this is you being selfish. You have always been a selfish person, even your mother had always told you so. Was it so selfish to choose yourself—your career—over a hypothetical future? The military was not a kind profession to females who wanted families. You had seen too many women settle for less in their careers because they decided that the timeline of rising in the ranks was too long to wait and they chose to have children instead. A coworker had confessed to you that despite how much she loved her husband and her children, her life ended when she had them.
Realistically, you couldn't have both. Jake knew that. You knew that.
You can't even look Admiral Simpson in the eye when you had him your letter of resignation.

Hi TG Fandom!!!!
(Climbing out of my work cave with this little AU, since I haven't had any free time to write BUT I did get some snazzy new forearm crutches to use when I teach and give lectures so this dude is winning at life tbh).
Weird stuff starts happening when they're about a week into Top Gun.
All the flyboys are trying to befriend Maverick, but he's making it impossible. That, or the guy just has selective amnesia.
Wolfman tries to talk to him in the lunch line, but the sleep-deprived Maverick in front of him just walks right past him… in the wrong uniform? Is that a priest’s collar?
Hollywood has something similar happen to him, when he goes on a jog and bumps into Maverick pushing a baby in a stroller. A sleeping baby with a red pacifier in it’s mouth and a small girl with pigtails skating beside him. And is he wearing rollerblades too?? Hollywood tries to stop him in surprise, but Maverick shoots him a dirty look and keeps skating, tugging his kids closer. Rude.
Slider and Ice have their own trippy experience when they have to go to medbay because Ice twisted his ankle again — the man refuses to tape it properly — and another doctor pops in to grab a chart and it’s Maverick???
“Mitchell, what the hell?” Slider snaps, neither of them thinking Maverick was old enough to be double-certified.
But Maverick looks stunned and very confused. “I’m sorry to interrupt, but I needed this?”
He keeps that weird look on his face as he ducks out the door and when they ask him about it in training, he just gives them the same weird look!
It comes to a head when Chipper and Sundown see Maverick talking with another officer and walking down the hall one minute. Then, they duck into the hangar and Maverick is sitting right at his desk, chatting to Goose.
It has to be a massive prank, it has to be!
Until they finally confront Maverick and Goose about it, and Mav turns bright red, while Goose can't stop laughing to save his life. He's honking and wheezing up a storm.
“Oh God,” Goose finally gasps out, “The boys are never going to let you hear the end of this. You forgot to tell them!”
“Well, it wasn't the first thing that jumped to mind! Teddy isn't even Navy!”
Goose thwacks his pilot upside the head. “Lynds, Mal and Kiff work on the same base as us!” For the greater flyboy population he finally adds, “Identical quintuplets.”
Yessireee, five whole Mavericks, exactly what the world needed. 😂

The rest of the week flew by. You and Jake went on a couple of dates, but by the end of the week, it was the four of you—Jake, Christian, Phoenix, and you—spending time together. On Thursday, you visited the Birch Aquarium, and on Friday, you strolled through the San Diego Zoo. Jake carried Christian on his shoulders, his laughter mingling with Christian’s as you and Phoenix walked leisurely behind, you pushing the stroller.
Phoenix watched Jake and Christian in awe, her expression a mix of amazement and amusement. “I just don’t know what to say. He’s the cockiest person I’ve ever met, and you…” She turned her gaze to you, shaking her head slightly. “I don’t know what you did.”
She glanced back at Jake and Christian, a soft smile forming. “And C.J. adores Jake just as much as Jake adores him.”
You followed her gaze, watching as Jake crouched down next to Christian, both intently studying the bears.
“He’s not Christian, though,” Phoenix acknowledged softly.
“No one will ever be like Christian,” you replied, your voice steady but filled with quiet emotion.
Phoenix turned to you, her eyes searching. “Do you still miss him?”
You sighed, the weight of the truth pressing down. “Every day.”
“Are you sure you’re ready to move on?” she asked gently, her concern evident.
You met Phoenix’s gaze, a small, bittersweet smile tugging at your lips. “I’ll always miss Christian. He was a huge part of my life, and a part of me will always love him.” You paused, watching Jake lift Christian up to get a better view of the bears. “But I can’t stay stuck in the past. I owe it to C.J. to try to find happiness again—and to myself.”
Phoenix nodded, her expression softening. “Jake seems like he gets that. He’s not trying to replace Christian.”
You glanced back at her, your voice firm yet tender. “He’s not. He’s just… Jake. And somehow, that’s enough.”
Phoenix smiled, nudging your shoulder gently. “You’re stronger than you give yourself credit for, Y/N.”
“Maybe,” you admitted. “But having people like you—and now Jake—makes it easier.”
As if on cue, Jake turned around, a big grin on his face. “Hey, we’re heading to see the elk next. You two coming?”
You and Phoenix exchanged a look, both of you smiling. “Wouldn’t miss it,” you called out, steering the stroller in their direction.
Jake waited for you to catch up, Christian perched happily on his shoulders. As you fell into step beside him, he leaned in slightly, his voice low enough for only you to hear. “You okay?”
You nodded, your heart feeling a little lighter. “Yeah, I am.”
His eyes held yours for a moment, warm and steady. “Good,” he said softly, his hand brushing yours as you walked.
"Ant Tosh!" Christian yelled from Jake's shoulders, arms out.
Phoenix puts her arms out and Christian goes to her. "What is it?"
"Bears!"
“Bears? Well, let’s go check it out.” She carries Christian over to the bear exhibit and Jake stays behind. You both watch Phoenix and Christian.
Jake looks at you. “He loves his animals.”
“That he does.”
“Just like his momma.”
You smile and shrug. “Maybe.”
The two of you start walking toward Phoenix and Christian. When you reach them, Christian yawns and reaches out for Jake, who gladly takes him.
“Yake?”
“Yeah, bud?”
Christian rubs his eyes. “Tired.”
You look at your watch. It is his nap time. “You want to go in your stroller?”
Christian grips Jake harder. “No! Yake!” He turns his head away from you and lays it on Jakes shoulder.
“It’s okay. I got him,” Jake assures you as you continue to walk through the zoo.
Tumblr media
Later that night, you joined Phoenix and Jake at The Hard Deck. Amelia, the daughter of Penny Benjamin who owns the bar, offered to watch Christian for you.
As you sipped on your wine cooler, you sat next to Phoenix’s weapons system officer Robert ‘Bob’ Floyd and watched Jake playing pool.
“It’s nice to officially meet you,” Bob says.
“You too. Phoenix speaks very highly of you.”
“Hey, Bob. Don’t be trying to steal my woman over there,” Jake cautions after taking a pool shot.
You beam with a glint of mischief in your eyes. “Why Jake 'Hangman’ Seresin. This is news to me.”
Jake stood up, flabbergasted.
“Darlin. I believe everyone in this bar is aware of that.” He starts walking towards you.
“I wasn’t.”
“The hell you weren’t.” He pulls you to him and kisses you deeply.
The bar goes crazy.
Jake’s kiss was firm yet tender, and you couldn’t help but melt into the moment, the cheers and hollers from the crowd at The Hard Deck fading into the background. When he finally pulled back, his green eyes sparkled with mischief and something deeper—something real.
“Well, now you know,” he said, his voice low and teasing, a cocky grin playing on his lips. “And I don’t plan on keeping it a secret.”
You laughed, your cheeks flushed. “I think the whole bar got the memo.”
Phoenix rolled her eyes but smiled. “Honestly, Seresin, you’re impossible.”
“Impossible to resist,” Jake shot back, winking at her before turning his full attention back to you. “You wanna play?” he asked, nodding toward the pool table.
You smiled, your heart warm and light. It had been a long time since you’d felt this happy. “Yeah, I’ll play. Rack ’em up, Hangman,” you said with a playful grin.
Jake’s grin widened, and he gave you a mock salute. “Yes, ma’am.” He grabbed the triangle and started racking the balls with practiced ease, his movements smooth and confident. The room seemed to hum with energy as the two of you prepared for the game.
Phoenix leaned against the bar, her arms crossed, smirking. “This should be good.”
Jake straightened, his eyes locking with yours as he gestured toward the table. “Ladies first.”
You stepped up, gripping the cue stick, and took a moment to line up your shot. The room grew quiet as everyone watched, anticipation thick in the air. You struck the cue ball, sending it careening toward the rack. It broke cleanly, and one of the striped balls dropped into a corner pocket.
Jake raised an eyebrow, impressed. “Not bad, Y/N. Not bad at all.”
“Beginner’s luck,” you said with a shrug, but there was a playful glint in your eyes.
“Luck, huh?” he teased, chalking his cue. “Let’s see if you can keep that streak going.”
As the game progressed, laughter and light-hearted banter flowed between you and Jake. You managed to sink a few more shots, much to your own surprise, while Jake—ever the showman—made a point of calling his every shot, complete with dramatic flourishes.
By the time the game ended, with Jake narrowly edging you out, you were grinning from ear to ear. “Guess I’ll have to get a rematch,” you said, setting your cue stick aside.
“Anytime, darlin’,” Jake replied, his voice low and warm. “But don’t think I’ll go easy on you next time.”
“Wouldn’t dream of it,” you shot back, feeling a surge of confidence you hadn’t felt in years.
Phoenix clapped her hands together, breaking the moment. “Alright, lovebirds, let’s get another round. The night’s still young.”
As Jake draped his arm casually over your shoulders, leading you back to the bar, you couldn’t help but think that maybe—just maybe—you were ready for this new chapter.

It was hard to accept his dreams coming true when it took everything falling apart to get there. It was truthfully even hard to call this a dream when it was just a necessity for a normal and safe life. The peace the beach town of La Paz, Mexico had to offer wasn’t as rewarding as the fight to get here made it seem it would be. For Angel, most of that had to do with the fact that time passed differently now. There was nothing to look forward to anymore now that he was here. There were no visits from grandparents, no visits from uncles, no waking up next to the woman he loved. The goals he once had before were now achieved and alongside of them looking different, he hadn’t had the time or honest want to create new ones. The one thing that kept him going was his son, Maverick. The thought of showing him a world of endless opportunities and making life better solely for him was what let him get out of bed in the morning everyday. On their journey down, he opted to show him where the little boy’s grandparents once lived, where Maverick's mother had grown up, but Angel knew staying in those places would only ultimately leave him in the same cycle. The cycle Angel was on the path to break, because, well, it was his only option now.
Waking up might have been the hardest part of his day. It was ironic because falling asleep was the best. A moment of uninterrupted time where his thoughts weren’t consumed in his brain. He was shocked he didn’t have nightmares about everything, but his mind saved those for the daytime. When he was awake, he could vividly remember everything, every moment, every sound, every look, every feeling. It was why waking up was the hardest, because everything hit him like a pile of bricks the moment his eyes opened. He saw Felipe everyday. He heard EZ everyday. He searched for Luisa everyday.
Not literally, ofcourse. The image of his father being rolled out on a coroner’s gurney was embedded into his brain. The sound of EZ’s last breaths, his last wishes of telling Maverick about him and their mother. And finally, his hand reached for Luisa in his bed every morning as some search for comfort but he was left with emptiness. Once Maverick was up that’s when he was able to push everything aside and do simple everyday things for him. He was currently living off the money Luisa had left in the crib before settling into a job. Settling into employment meant finding someone or somewhere to leave Maverick and he just wasn’t ready for that step. Luckily in Mexico, he could make that money stretch. Their place was cheap, Maverick was still sleeping in a crib so the one bedroom house they stayed in was more than doable. Food was no more than $25 a week between the two of them and that was pending if Angel even had the drive to eat a full meal. Maverick was always taken care of, though. He had tons of his favorite food stored in the fridge and freezer and lots of toys. Angel had taken his Pops truck down, loading it up with the broken down crib, stroller, and height chair, a few bags of their clothes, and that was just about it.
It was early morning, Angel had been awake for a few minutes staring at the ceiling thinking about his brother. The ultimate choice he had to make in stabbing him. Logically he knew there was no out of that situation, but that didn’t stop the ‘what ifs’ from running through his head everyday. The biggest what if that weighed on Angel’s mind was what if he never joined the club. That was what brought them there. Sure, Felipe’s past life had brought violence to them, specifically their mother, but Angel continued it. Maybe if he never joined the club EZ would have gotten out of prison and done something with his life. Again, this was Angel told himself, but he struggled with that just like everything else. If he never joined the club, he never would have met Luisa or had Maverick, EZ probably would have stayed in jail for the full stint with no chance of getting out early. It made Angel think about who EZ was prior to losing their mother, what would have happened if everything was different. If he was a different person, his father was a different person, it ultimately brought him to one thought. Why him? Why was he the only one who got out. That’s usually when the cries of Maverick snapped him out of it as if the universe was giving him the answer.
As Maverick’s voice cooed right on schedule, Angel was quick to get out of bed and grab him from the crib. Angel chatted with the boy, asking him how he slept, what he was hungry for, what he was in the mood to wear. All of those things took up a good couple hours of the morning between bath time and feeding, for the both of them.
Now was the time to take on the beach town of La Paz, he and Maverick had been exploring the last few weeks, taking some time on the few different beaches, enjoying the street art and boardwalks, taking in the marinas, finding some local food spots to indulge in, and today was time to hit downtown.
La Paz was beautiful, the streets were filled with statues, artworks, and markets as you walked along the coast to get downtown where there was just more of everything. Angel had Maverick in his arms as they walked past a bookstore which made him stop and stare into the window.
“You know your Tío EZ loved to read.” Angel looked over at the boy in his arms. “Your grandpa, my dad, had bookshelves in his shop and would constantly be giving new ones to your Tío, I always told ‘em they smelt like meat and maybe there was somewhere better to keep 'em but they enjoyed it.” Angel nodded his head at the memory.
“Maybe we can find you some different books, huh?” Angel looked into the bookstore and noticed it was more of a newsstand with biographies, novels, and stories versus children’s books so he began his search for a library.
Biblioteca Pública para los Niños de La Paz, the words on the secluded building could be seen from a hundred feet away. The building was painted and bright and seemed to be exactly what he was looking for. Maverick was enamored by it, his eyes were glued to the building and his arms extended out to point to it.
Angel let out a laugh, “Alright, little man. Let's go check it out.”
As they entered the building it was a lot fancier than he imagined a library to be, there were different sections despite it being majorly a children's library. They had movies, DVDs, novels but when Angel looked to the left he was met with a huge children’s section. There was a big circular room that he assumed was for events, walls and walls of books, almost never ending and somewhere in the middle of that were couches and play sets. In the midst of all of this there was a big circulation desk that was covered in posters and kids toys and flyers where there was an empty desk chair. Angel assumed someone must’ve been on their break or roaming around the library so he walked past it and let Maverick roam around the play sets.
“Mav, come, look at these.” He called the little boy over to the half shelf of books. Angel sat squatted on the ground at Maverick’s eye level as he pulled books out, there were two that he held onto which Angel assumed they’d be checking out while the others were left on the floor in his path along the shelf. Angel was quick to grab the discarded books and put them back in their proper place as he moved behind his son, making sure that nothing was left out of place.
“Maybe we can find a book that daddy used to read all the time.” Angel started to look at the next shelf over for the book he remembered Marisol reading to him while Maverick plopped down right next to him as if he was waiting for the book.
“Buenas tardes, como los puedo ayudar? ” A woman’s voice caused Angel to startle and turn around immediately. He was such a tall individual that looking up to someone wasn’t usual for him.
“Lo siento,” he let out a chuckle and shook his head as he tried to think straight, “uh, estoy buscando un libro.” He explained in spanish what he was doing.
“Perdoname,” the woman laughed back, “no quise asustarte.” Her eyes were soft as she apologized. “Sabes el nombre del libro?”
Angel thought for a minute. “Uh, si, se–se llama,” Angel closed his eyes as he tried to remember the name, “olvidé el nombre, pero se trata del sol y…” He lost it, it’s like any bit of spanish left his brain when he tried to think of the word he was looking for. “Ah, que es,” he thought to himself now feeling fully embarrassed by his lack of fluency. “Come se dice, un reptilio?” He replaced the word he wanted with a similar synonym.
“A lizard?” The woman spoke her English as clear as day even with her accent.
Angel let out a sigh of relief. “Yea, the book is about a sun and lizard.”
“La Lagartija y el Sol.” She nodded, knowing exactly what book he was referring to.
“Yes!” His eyes lit up. “Sor– Perdoname, si, La Lagartija y el Sol.” He confirmed still stumbling over his words.
“It’s okay, I speak English.” The girl met Angel at eye level as she squatted down and reached across his face to search for the book.
“I’m trying to fit in, act like a local.” He let out a nervous chuckle that made her smile.
“We stick out like sore thumbs.” Her thick accent was littered with humor as she related to him.
“You’re not local?” Angel asked her out of curiosity.
“No, I’m from Mexico but not La Paz. I learned English in the States a few years ago.” She wasn’t willing to give up more specifics but Angel wasn’t one to pry either.
“Any advice on how not to stick out and seem like a local?” He laughed as he adjusted himself to stand up.
“No one cares here, everyone minds their business, it’s why I enjoy living here.” She stopped dragging her finger along the books as she found the one she was looking for and pulled it out by its spine. “La Lagartija y el Sol.”
“Thank you, I think he’s gonna like this one.” Angel pointed to his son who was sitting on the couch mindlessly going through the few books that he had grabbed himself.
“It is about perseverance and bravery, two traits you’ll need if you want to try and fit in as a local.” She teased. “The book is bilingual, also. Might help both of you.”
“Good to know, ironically, my mom used to read me the bilingual version and well, you’ve seen how well that worked out.” He was now standing with the book in his hand.
“Takes perseverance.” She smirked. “Let me know if you need any more help.” And with that, she was moving back behind the children’s circulation desk.
Angel stayed with Maverick in between the two shorter shelves where the playsets were, letting the boy enjoy the toys and time out of the house. They picked out a couple DVDs too in addition to the 3 books in his hands, just trying to think of ways to pass the time back at home. About an hour and a half had passed and Angel decided it was time to leave to grab some lunch and maybe head to the marina so he began to approach the childrens desk with Maverick in one arm and the things he planned to check out in the other.
The same woman came out from the back office and smiled as she situated back in her seat at the computer that was likely from the early 2000s.
“Do you have a card with us already?” She looked up at him before taking the movies and books off the part of the desk that was raised to be more of an appropriate height for those standing on the opposite side of it.
“No, I’d have to sign up for one if that’s not a big deal?” His tone had a little apprehension in it.
“Nope, just need to get some info from you.” She began clicking things on the computer and then asking him questions. “Need a name, address, and some form of ID.”
Angel froze for a minute, he wasn’t exactly sure what he felt comfortable giving up information wise. He was well aware that this was some random woman at the library and not the cartel or even a police officer but it just felt nerve wracking.
“Um, do I need to give all that information?” He stood awkwardly as he re-situated Maverick on his side.
The woman looked up at him and immediately understood. “I can make it work with just a name.” She agreed. “I just need you to promise you’re going to return those items in 3 weeks because if not it’s my paycheck the replacements come out of.” Her face was soft when she spoke.
“Promise. You can put the card under Angel Reyes.” He leaned over to see what she put into the system.
After a few minutes she took out a card and scanned it before placing it on the table in front of him. “If you have any trouble just ask for me and I’ll take care of it. I put the address in as my own.”
Angel was speechless for a minute before he spoke up. “Thanks, I didn’t mean to have to have you–” she cut him off before he finished speaking.
“It’s okay, I get it.” Her eyes moved to Maverick, who was beginning to fall asleep in Angel’s arms, and then back to Angel’s eyes before grabbing his things to check him out. After scanning all the items and placing them in a bag she moved to go grab something on the other side of the desk. “Also,” she twirled in the chair. “I pulled this for you. I think you and your son would enjoy it.”
La Frontera: El Viaje con Papá - A Journey with Papa.
Angel stared at the book for a minute with a smile on his face.
“You know, I always wanted to travel. I had dreams about it. Going all these different places. I went to some but like I wanted to see things my family saw, see things they didn’t, just have the world at my disposal, right?” He was staring down at the book, holding it in his hand, wiping his tumb across the cover. “But now I just don’t feel that way anymore.” He put the book down on the table and snapped himself out of his thoughts. “Sorry,” his head shook. “I didn’t mean to unload, I don’t get to talk to many people that aren’t above the age of 2.”
The woman smiled, “You know, sometimes that feeling of wanderlust is your gut telling you that you are not in the right place.” Her shoulders shrugged like what she said didn’t hold a heavy weight to Angel’s ears. There was a moment where he just took in those words before she spoke up again. “Maybe you’re just finally in the right place.”
She had gone back to doing something, not paying Angel any attention as he slowly put the book in the bag. Maybe it was true, he was in the right place, he had finally escaped all the violence, the stress, the uneasiness, and he could feel free. That still didn’t come without punishment. The thought of feeling free reminded him that his brother, father, and mother died being stuck. The images of his mother on the floor of the shop followed by his father on the gurney and his brother on the floor of the Mayan clubhouse rotted his brain. Repetitive words of the things they said throughout their lifetime haunting Angel. How could he be free when he felt so chained to their memory.
“Are you okay?” The woman’s voice snapped Angel out of his thoughts.
“Si, Yes, Gracias, seriously for all your help.” Angel started stepping away now.
“You are welcome, Angel.” She smiled and went back to her work before looking up when Angel stuttered after wishing her a good day but realizing he had no idea what her name was.
“Isabeth–Isa.”
Angel stood there frozen again and repeated her name. “Isa?” The woman’s head nodded and she looked at him confused.
“Is there something wrong with that?” She let out a nervous laugh.
“I’m sorry, that was sort of my mom’s name.” He closed his eyes with a smile.
“Sort of?” She twisted her head and met him with the same smile.
“Yea, sort of–it’s complicated.” He chuckled back.
“Well to make it more complicated, you can call me Izzy. That’s what my friends in the states used to call me, I kind of miss it.”
“How’d you know I was from the states?” He asked curiously, a look that didn’t last long as she gave him a knowing look and tried to hold in her laugh. “Fair enough, Izzy it is.” He nodded and with that he left the library with a feeling of content.
It was nice to finally have a conversation with someone that held some sort of mature value, despite the fact that it brought Angel some of his darkest thoughts, but he would have had those regardless, at least this time he was offered some solace. Maybe he was finally in the right place, maybe this is where Maverick needed to be, where he needed to be. Perhaps it was everyone he lost that guided him to this spot simply because it was the right place. Maybe wanderlust didn’t need to be about huge travel but just roaming around your own space, your mind even, finding one place of peace and calmness where all the bad things weren’t allowed to go. That was what Angel’s next adventure would hold, wanderlust of his mind, a place where all his demons and nightmares weren’t allowed, and just peace and tranquility could be found.

Trick or Treat: The Fic!
Here are all of my tricks and treats from the Thunderfam Trick or Treat in their final form, all together as the whole fic!!!
Lucy takes her kids trick or treating! Shenanigans, cute costumes and too much sugar inbound! Much fluff!! Plus a bonus extra snippet!
----
Lucy pressed a hand over her mouth trying not to laugh. Scott looked so much like Jeff in his dad’s old airforce flight suit, complete with aviator sunnies and troublemaking grin. Apart from how the arms and legs had to be rolled up several times as Scott hadn’t yet hit his growth spurt, and were already coming down as Lucy attempted to pin them in place while the not quite teen bounced with excitement, candy bucket in hand.
John adjusted his cat ears for the forth time in not as many minutes, fidgeting with the headband, a nervous frown crinkled between his eye brows. Lucy knew her second eldest wasn't much of a fan of noisy crowds of people or spooky surprises, when it came down to it neither was she, but John wanted to go, had picked out his costume of a black and ginger cat and even let a very careful Virgil draw whiskers and a nose on his face with Lucy’s eyeliner. A set of noise cancelling headphones in her bag and the promise that he could stick by Scott the whole time and go home with her if he needed to, had  a small smile once again on John’s lips, as he rocked on his heels in anticipation.
Virgil’s costume had been the easiest out of all of them, in terms of choice. Lucy thought it would be a phase but ever since the local fire engine and crew had come for a demonstration at the primary school several months ago, wanting to be a fire fighter had been all Virgil could talk about. Bundled up in yellow rain jacket far too large to go to Gordon, covered in reflective tape stripes because ‘That’s what the real one’s look like, mummy,’ Tracy spelt out across the back, the red plastic hat jammed on his curls, falling over eyes, Virgil was positively ecstatic. If only they could keep him from trying to practice with the garden hose turned full water pressure on their thankfully very much not on fire house.
Kyrano’s kid staying with them, Tanusha or as the boys had started called her, Tin Tin, resolutely refused to dress up. Eventually, with much suspicious glancing around, she whispered in Lucy’s ear that she was already dressed up, because she was a spy and didn't need a costume. In the kid way like it was totally obvious and how didn't Lucy already know this, Tin Tin stated, “The only spies that look like spies are dead spies.” Lucy manage to keep a straight face through that rather threatening sentence delivered by a kid with pig tails, missing front teeth, and a expression she likely throught was intimidating with a wrinkled up nose and screwed up eyes, but to Lucy was adorable.
Gordon had been utterly thrilled when Lucy had said, yes, he could go as both a pirate and a clownfish, if that’s what he wanted. The toddler hadn't taken off the patterned aquarium shirt or pirate hat since this morning, despite several narrow misses with the bath, the full kitchen sink and the garden hose. Orange, black and white paint, hastily applied as Lucy chased a laughing Gordon around the house, plus a rubber duck attached to his shoulder at Gordon’s insistence with some creative duct taping, completed the costume.
Little Allie had the dubious honour of the astronaut baby costume Jeff and Lee had found online. Speaking of Jeff and Lee, Lucy followed the sound of cursing to the hallway where both astronauts were trying and failing to unfold the double stroller for Alan and an inevitably exhausted Gordy. Lucy instructed while laughing, ‘There’s a catch under there, somewhere,’ while she jiggled Allie on her hip as he tried to chew her hair.
Finally, they were all ready to go. Mini Maverick held hands with a ginger and black cat and a fire fighter, ready to surge ahead towards the streets and sweets being handed out. The undercover spy dodged from shadow to shadow, and Lucy made note to keep an extra eye out so she didn't disappear. A clownfish pirate or pirate clownfish, there was no consensus come to about that, was perched on Lee’s shoulders, the stroller predictably refused. The pint sized astronaut gnawed on a rocket shaped teether, in the pram pushed by full-sized astronaut two, or Jeff ‘We don't need costumes, we’re already famous,’ Tracy. Every year, he and Lee got a kick out of telling sceptical children that they really were the real deal.
Lucy’s lab coat, her work one because she’d run out of time for a costume for herself, swished around her, covered in definitely artful and not because it had been a day, explosion marks. Well technically, it hadn't been an explosion-explosion, rather a spill and the chemicals were safe, but that was only for her to know and everyone else to worry about. With her mess of unbrushed red curls and ability to spout off physics and astronomy facts at a million miles a Cminute, she made quite the mad scientist, if she did say so herself. Especially as she dashed down the street after her eldest three, because they most definitely still needed supervision, after the sticky toffee, climbing tree, near miss with the emergency room trick of last year!
---Bonus!!!---
Virgil took his brand-shiny-new firefighters uniform from Chief McCready’s hands, grinning face splitting wide. His own uniform, because for the next few weeks he was a proper part of Blue Watch, and a firefighter!
It had even been modified to incorporate his IR tech and most importantly his green baldric over the top because couldn't imagine feeling properly prepared for rescues without it.
He tugged the new jacket on right away over his flannel, feeling like a kid on halloween. He gave it a spin, the coat flaring out around him. Heh, if little Virgie could see him now, a proper firefighter.
“Whatcha laughing at, Tracy?” Cass clapped him on the shoulder.
As soon as Virgil explained what had been his halloween costume for every year of his childhood, he was surrounded by Blue Watch, good naturedly demanding that they had ‘got to see photographic evidence.’
Virgil rolled his eyes, but called up John, the keeper of all the family photos on Five’s massive storage banks.
John obliged, and firefighters crowded around the holos projected from his wrist comm.
“Aww, you were an adorable kid, Tracy!”
“Cuuute!”
“You sure did grow up, but I don’t think the expression has changed at all!”
Then a snickering John decided to chime in with the whole practicing fighting fires with the garden house incident, and the consequences to hanging laundry and open windows.
Cass, serious, no nonsense Chief McCready was giggling, tears streaming down her face, hanging onto his shoulder to stay upright.
Virgil snorted, then couldn’t help but burst out laughing too.He was proud of his achievements to become a firefighter, they were all laughing with him, not at him, they were his team. He threw his arms around them, grinning along.

location: Frank's Automotive
After several weeks of taking the bus every time he needed to go somewhere with his daughter, Maverick was properly fed up with public transportation. It wasn't the ideal way of getting around, and lugging a stroller or carrier onto buses was very frustrating. He needed a car, so he headed over to Frank's Automotive and walked right past the main entrance, heading over to the area where the mechanics would be. He approached the woman he saw standing there, "I got a question for you" he started, stopping when he was a couple feet from her. "I need to get a car and I don't really trust car salesmen, you got any suggestions for any cars in your lot here that I should go for before I head in there and some asshole in a suit tries to up-sell me on something else?" he asked, hoping she might be able to give him an idea. Even though he was a mechanic, he honestly didn't care much about cars and preferred his motorcycle. "Something I can drive my kid around in" he added, since that was the entire reason he was getting a car.

At Mateo's question about his daughter, Maverick turned his head to look at her and she slept peacefully in her stroller beside his bed. "She's doing good, I think she likes us being at the hospital" he told him, looking back to his friend. "All the nurses keep coming in here to see her and play with her when she's awake, she's having the time of her life. She doesn't even care that her dad was stabbed, kind of fucked up if I'm honest" he joked, since she was clearly too young to understand why they were there in the first place. "Charlotte is loving the attention though, she definitely gets that from her mother"
Tumblr media
He had always known Maverick to speak what was on his mind. Mateo would be the first to say that he admired that about the man - should he admit to admiring anyone in his life in the first place. Despite the topic at hand, he chuckled, "Yeah, maybe so," the underground bar was one that was easily beat but Mateo wanted to well exceed that, if he was being honest. Being a parent was not something that he had ever wanted to be, not until Nel told him that she was pregnant. Mateo let out a laugh, "Yeah, you don't got to worry about me kissin' you, I know where yours have been, too," he joked right back with the other man. "How's that baby of yours doin'?" @maverick-bennett

Beau Cyclone Simpson x Fem!WifeReader
Warnings: pregnancy, terrible fathers, cursing, alcohol, abandonment, navy, death
Author - couldn’t get this concept out of my head! not edited, just needed to write it all out, so i apologize if it’s terrible.
photo from pinterest:
Tumblr media
For how stern Beau ‘Cyclone’ Simpson was, his wife was the epitome of sunshine. If Y/N Simpson worked in the Navy, Warlock joked your callsign was ‘Sunshine’. You added the softness to the relationship in public, however you would say that your husband was a romantic. You viewed him as the love of your life, your protector, and the only person either of you loved more than each other would be your newborn son.
Beau planned all your dates, would always randomly bring you flowers, and made sure every day you knew you were the most beautiful woman in his eyes.
You were Beau’s heart, and although some of the Navy guys teased he didn’t actually have one, no one could deny the personality change that seemed to happen when you were around. You were the light of his life, and your newborn son was another beacon that made Beau’s heart brighter.
“Baby, do you want me to hold him?” Beau asked, concerned as he watched you walking up the with your Tommy in your arms. You didn’t look like you were in pain, but since delivering less than two weeks ago, he was still nervous.
“Sweetheart, I love you, but I’m good. He’s good right now” You said, with a soft smile, before looking down at your son who was awake but just sucking on his pacifier for now. Smiling, Beau kept walking besides you, as he rolled the stroller with plenty of “in case” bags.
As first time newborn parents, you didn’t know what was going to happen with leaving your house for more than a few minutes. As a Navy Admiral, Beau usually planned for everything - so he packed multiple bags for multiple scenarios - crying, sleeping, eating, etc. Another reason you two got along so well was because you both were very “type A”.
Today was Admiral Kazansky’s funeral however, and although you had not brought Tommy to the actual funeral, Sarah Kazansky had requested that he appeared at his namesake’s house afterwards.
Tommy - Thomas Jeremy Simpson - was named after Admiral Tom “Iceman” Kazansky, the man who was basically a father to Y/N after her own father had ignored her. In all sense of the word parents, that was Admiral and Mrs. Kazansky to Y/N. They had been the ones at her high school graduation, college graduation, wedding, and this past week, birth of her son.
Only a few people had been at the hospital the day Tommy was born - Sarah and Tom Kazansky, Warlock, and Y/N’s best friend. Ice was incredibly honored to have been his ‘grandson’s’ namesake, tears streamed down his face when Beau had broken the news.
Her actual father…well he cared more about the son of his best friend to ever pay attention to his own. Most people didn’t even know he had a daughter.
You met Beau after a dinner party at Kazansky’s. He’ll never forget when he saw you in that dress, how you radiated beauty with your kind smile. Despite his reputation, he couldn’t help but stare at you, as you talked with many others before making your way over to his group.
“Y/N darling, this is Vice Admiral Beau ‘Cyclone’ Simpson” Ice introduced, and he watched as you smiled warmly at him, before looking at Ice, a smirk appearing on your lips.
“This is the infamous Cyclone? He doesn’t look so bad” You replied, your hand reaching out to shake his. Surprising the group, he took your hand and pressed a kiss to the back of your palm, keeping his eyes locked onto yours. The Kazansky’s looked to each other with confusion on their faces.
“What have you heard about me?” He replied, a raised eyebrow but playfulness in his eyes. You smiled widely, and Ice couldn’t help but feel a smile creep on his face.
“Ice thinks you’re too much of a rule follower” You replied, as Ice sighed, rolling his eyes at your comment.
“Well someone has to be. Can’t keep letting Maverick off the hook every time he pisses off an admiral” Beau says, slight annoyance in his tone about Maverick, but as he watched Tom and Sarah’s head turn swiftly to you, gauging your reaction, he could see he said something wrong.
“I’m going to get some more to drink. Would anyone like more?” You said, a forced smile on your lips. He nodded caught your gaze, following you over to the bar. He could feel Tom’s staring on his back, which he shook off as he looked at you.
“I’m sorry if I made you uncomfortable. Do you know Maverick?” Beau asked, curiosity over taking him. You looked back at him, nodding before pouring some more wine in your glass. He poured some more whiskey in his glass.
“I’m assuming you don’t like him very much?” You replied, deciding to not give much away about how you know Maverick. He shrugged, when you met his gaze again. Your expression wasn’t alluding to a positive nor a negative relationship. Did you date him?
“There’s a reason he hasn’t had a promotion more than Captain. He might be friend’s with Ice, but…” Beau said, trailing off on how best to describe him.
“He doesn’t care about rules. Very his way or the highway” You replied, rolling your eyes as you took a big sip of your wine. Beau looked at you curiously, and when you looked back at him you sighed. “Trust me, I’m with you on it. He’s my father, but we haven’t spoken in about ten years” You said, and Beau froze.
“I’m so sorry” He said, but you smiled warmly at him, reaching out your hand to place on his shoulder.
“Please, don’t worry about it. Ice is more of my father than he is. Now, should I call you Beau or Cyclone? Which would you prefer?” You asked, switching topics easily. He smiled, putting his hand over yours.
“You can call me Beau. What do you do for work?” He asked, as he saw you smiled wider.
The whole night the pair of you stayed by each other’s side, causing Sarah to rearrange some of the dinner place cards so you two could sit together. The Kazansky’s, as well as the rest of the guests at the dinner party,  watched as you laughed and flirted with the Vice Admiral, and Cyclone smiled for almost the whole night, a rare sight for those involved with the Navy. The other officials were in shock.
“Did you give him drugs?” Warlock asked Ice, as they both stared at Cyclone and you, laughing together.
“No… Sarah?” Ice asked, looking to his wife, as she glanced over to the couple.
“I think he likes her” Sarah said, smiling, as she watched you blush over something Beau said. They watched as he grinned wider, a twinkle in both of their eyes.
“Maverick is going to hate this” Warlock stated.
“Maverick hasn’t spoken to his daughter in 10 years. I don’t think he has any room to comment” Sarah stated conclusively, looking to Ice with a knowing glance. He nodded, looking at you.
“She deserves happiness” Ice said, and everyone nodded in agreement.
“Y/N, Cyclone, it’s so good to see you. Tommy! Oh he’s so adorable” Sarah Kazansky - Y/N’s “mother" said, looking at the couple and child. Y/N smiled softly, not a bright smile considering the circumstances, but Sarah looked genuinely happy to see the child.
“Do you want to hold him, grandma?” You asked, causing the woman to smile wider.
“Oh I would love too” Sarah said, picking up Tommy from your arms and cradling him. Tommy looked up at her with wide eyes, and Sarah looked back at the couple who also seemed enamored with their newborn.
“Where should I put Y/N’s pie?” Beau asked, as he put aside the bags and stroller in the hall closet.
“I made some other meals so you won’t have to cook as well” Y/N said.
“Oh just in the kitchen. Thank you both” Sarah said, warmly, before looking back down at her ‘grandchild’. Beau gave Y/N a forehead kiss, before heading to put the food in the kitchen fridge.
“Y/N! And little Tommy!” Warlock said, bringing you into a hug before turning his attention to Tommy in Sarah’s arms. He was getting a bit fidgety so you held out your arms to take him back, and Sarah passed him into yours.
“I can’t believe you just gave birth. You look beautiful” Sarah said, and you smiled.
“I can’t believe Cyclone let you two out of the house. I was certain he’d make you keep recovering” Warlock teased as you chuckled, rocking Tommy back and forth which seemed to calm him.
“Well it’s a celebration for his namesake after all” You smiled sadly, as you watched Warlock reach out to Tommy, who held onto his hand.
“He’s got a strong grip. If he didn’t have your eyes, I would say he was a mini Cyclone” Warlock said, as everyone chuckled.
“Sarah, my condolences” Pete Mitchell said, walking over to the woman and giving her a hug.
Warlock and you shared a glance, as you tensed. You diverted your gaze down to Tommy.
“Let’s go find your father” You whispered, and Warlock nodded, patting your arm before you left to find Beau. He was talking to two men, who looked a bit younger than yourself, in their naval uniforms.
As you walked over, the blonde caught your eye and smiled at you, before Beau saw the lieutenant’s attention was somewhere else, and followed his gaze. He smiled, which seemed to surprise the men, before reaching his arm out to put around your waist and lead you into his side.
“Hey sweetheart, I was just about to come back to you. This is Lieutenants Jake Seresin and Javy Machado. Lieutenants, this is my wife Y/N and our son Tommy” Beaut introduced, as the men smiled and nodded.
“I’d shake your hand but this boy has my hands full. It’s nice to put faces with names, Hangman and Coyote, right?” You said, and they all chuckled.
“Congratulations! How old is he?” Coyote asked.
“Not even two weeks” You said with a smile.
“Are you in the Navy too?” Jake asked, before another woman and two other lieutenants came to join the group.
“No, but most of my kindergarten students have naval officers for parents because the school is so close, so I like to say I’m ‘Naval affiliated’” You said, and the group chuckled.
“You’re also an admiral’s wife, remember?” Beau teased, and you laughed, as the group chuckled, although it seemed slightly awkward, in surprise that your husband was capable of teasing. You were used to it at this point.
“Lieutenants, this is my wife Y/N and son Tommy. Y/N, this is Lieutenants Natasha Trace, Robert Floyd and Bradley Bradshaw” He said, giving you a look as you tensed, looking at Bradley.
“He’s talked about this group all week, so let me guess - Phoenix, Bob and Rooster. It’s a pleasure to meet you all” You said, your smile a bit more forced than usual as you felt the stare of Bradley on you, although you couldn’t meet his eyes.
“He’s so cute! How old is he?” Natasha asked, cooing over Tommy. You focused on Tommy and Natasha.
“Two weeks” Beau said, with a smile, gazing lovingly to his wife.
“Wow, I can’t believe you’re here. Was it easy?” Natasha asked.
“Stubborn boy gave me twenty two hours of labor” You said.
“If it was up to me, you’d be resting at home” Cyclone said, rubbing your shoulder.
“Yea, well I think I have some veto power since I delivered him, and Tommy was named after Ice” You said, as Beau rolled his eyes but with a smile on his face.
The lieutenants watched both of you interact with curiosity. Cyclone was acting so strangely compared to normal, but seeing the two of you together, it made sense.
“There they are, Warlock, with Cyclone. Is that a smile I see on his face?” Maverick said, and you tensed. The smiles instantly dropping from both of your faces, you looked to Beau. You hadn’t actually looked at him yet, and now that he was so close, you didn’t know how to escape.
“Maverick” Cyclone acknowledged, and the lieutenants were almost confused as to why the energy changed so drastically. You looked up and coincidentally made eye contact with Bradley, who seemed to put the pieces together, before you looked down at Tommy, rocking him to calm your own nerves. You looked at Warlock who looked guilty.
“Cyclone, was that a smile I saw before? I didn’t know you could do that. Is this your wife? I didn’t even know you got married, let alone had a kid. How old is he?” Maverick said, leaning closer, before you stepped away, looking straight at him. Your father.
As soon as you two locked eyes, Maverick’s eyes widened.
“Yes, this is my wife Y/N, and our son Tommy, named after Ice. He’s two weeks old” Beau said, holding onto you. You broke your eye contact with Maverick, looking back at Beau and Tommy.
“Y/N?” Maverick asked, and you sighed.
“Yes?” You asked, annoyed.
“Could we speak, outside?” He said, and looked back up at him. His face was tense, his eyes blazing with hurt and anger. You looked to Beau, and he nodded.
“It was nice to meet you all. We’ll be right back” You said, smiling at the lieutenants, before leading Maverick and Cyclone outside.
Inside, the dagger squad watched as Cyclone, Maverick and you all walked away from the house to have your discussion.
“So, ex-lover? Maverick seems to get around” Hangman said, theorizing with a smirk on his face.
“No, no. That’s Maverick’s daughter” Rooster explained, as the group looked to him and then the group in shock.
“Holy shit” Bob said.
“That doesn’t look like a happy reunion” Phoenix stated.
“That’s because it isn’t” Warlock stated ominously, as they all watched, eager for gossip.
“You got married and didn’t even invite your father?” Maverick yelled as softly as he could, once you three were far enough away from the house outside, his face red with annoyance. You sighed, rocking Tommy in your arms, kissing his face to keep him from crying.
You could only roll your eyes, but saw Beau’s jaw clench, ready to defend you with harsh words. The veins in his neck were throbbing, and you could see this ending badly.
“No, Beau. I got this” You said, in a soft tone, placing a hand on Beau’s chest, staring up at your husband with a smile, watching him look down at you before kissing your forehead.
You stared at him for a moment longer before removing your hand, looking over to Maverick, your gaze shifting from warm to a frosty chill. It felt like the space around you could be an icebox.
“Do you even know what I do for a living?” You asked, your face becoming cold as you watched the emotions all over Maverick’s face.
Everyone watched how calm you were, and shivered at the iciness in the air. If it was a cartoon, Maverick would be having smoke come out of his ears. Warlock had gotten the attention of Sarah, but held her back from going over to you.
“Do you know where I went to college? Do you know where I lived before here?” You asked, raising an eyebrow, at his lack of answers. You could see the flashes of regret in his eyes, as his anger became one of remorse.
“You know, everyone thinks you’re so admirable - keeping track of your best friend’s kid, making sure you’re there for him - at least in the background because Bradley doesn’t speak to you, right? Does he know you keep only his picture in your wallet? Go to his parent’s grave at least three times a year - one for the anniversary of Goose’s death, Goose’s birthday, and Bradley’s birthday, right? Now, can you tell me when my - your daughter’s, your actual child’s - is?” You asked, and you watched Maverick’s Adam’s Apple move, swallowing hard.
The other lieutenants looked at Bradley, who just stared at you, eyes filled with sympathy.
There was a long pause, and everyone was shifting eyes back and forth between you, Maverick and Rooster.
You rolled your eyes, already knowing the answer to your questions before you even began your reply.
“I didn’t think so. You know, I didn’t purposefully keep you away. I told Ice that if you ever asked about me, he could tell you. But only if you asked him” You said, your bite on your words getting harsher, feeling the rise of emotions in you. Biting the inside of your cheek, you looked up to Beau, his eyes raging with anger.
“So to answer your question, there was always a wedding invite for you. Always. It’s in Ices desk. If you ever asked him or Sarah about me, he would have given it to you” You said, before turning away, feeling Beau’s hand on your back, and leaving.
“Y/N! I’m your father. You can’t walk away from me!” Maverick shouted, causing you to stop and take a deep breath, before turning around.
“That didn’t stop you from turning your back on me. You aren’t my father, Ice is.” You said, feeling Beau’s arm tighten on you, before walking away with him.
“I love you” Beau stated, stopping the two of you when you finally got far enough away from the crowd of people.
“I love you too” You replied, gazing up at him as he put his hand on your cheek, bringing his lips to yours.

Our Beautiful Baylie
Tumblr media
Iceman x Dragon + Daughter Baylie
Dedicated to @bayisdying
A spin off alternate timeline where Baylie is the biological daughter of Ice & Dragon.
[Masterlist]
[Previous Chapter] - [Next Chapter]
Chapter Four - Iceman's daughter
♡♡♡
Tom's first day back at base and he was missing his beautiful Baylie already. Saying goodbye to her this morning was hard. Dragon knew it too.
That's why Rachael comes to base with the stroller. She smiles at her colleagues who stop to chat with her and see Baylie. She's a popular little lady. Everyone comments about how gorgeous she is.
When Tom sees his wife with the stroller coming toward him, he smiles brightly. Not only is his gorgeous wife here, but his daughter too.
Whiskey wastes no time in pushing ahead though. She pulls her best friend into a big hug and then looks at Baylie.
"She's beautiful!" Jade gasps. "Hi, honey! I'm your Aunt Whiskey. We're going to be best friends!"
Rachael chuckles.
Tom comes to stand next to his wife and he pulls her into his arms. She smiles as she leans against him and kisses him softly.
"Hey mama," he whispers. "You brought our daughter to the base?"
"I think she was missing her daddy, and I know you missed her too. Maybe you could show her around a little and I can catch up with Whiskey."
He smiles. "Alright. I'm glad you came."
"Me too. I'll see you in a little bit."
Ice gives his wife another kiss and then takes the stroller. His daughter wakes and finds herself looking at her papa and a stranger.
"Hey kiddo, I'm your uncle Sli," Ron smiles at her. Baylie just continues to look up at them.
Ice smiles at his daughter.
"Look at you being a big softy. Being a dad suits you, Ice," Slider says.
Ice smiles at him. "I love her very much."
Slider grins. "I know. She loves you too. I can see it in her eyes. The way she's looking at you."
Ice looks back down at his baby and, just as Slider said, Baylie is looking up at him.
"Ice."
Both men look up and see their commanding officer.
"A word."
Ice nods and then turns to Slider. "Will you watch over my girl for a moment?" He asks.
Slider smiles. "Of course. I'll look after her."
Ice smiles and then leaves Slider with the stroller as he follows his commander. Slider pushes the stroller slowly down the hall. Baylie is looking up at him.
"You're going to have such a big family, kiddo. Jade and I are going to be there whenever you or your parents need us, and we can't forget uncle Mav and uncle Goose. Hey, you'll meet Bradley sooner or later. Maybe Jade and I will be able to give you another friend. Either way, you're going to be surrounded by so many people who will love you."
Baylie starts to fuss slightly. Slider rocks the stroller gently, but Baylie starts to cry. Slider panics a little.
"Are you hungry? Did you poop?"
Gently, he lifts Baylie from her stroller and holds her close to him. "Are you missing your papa? He will be back soon."
Baylie cries. Slider does the only thing he can think of doing. He rocks her gently and starts to make plane noises. He doesn't know why it's the first thing he thinks of, but as Baylie starts to quiet down, he realises it works.
"Huh, would you look at that? Maybe we have a tiny pilot on our hands," he chuckles. "Wonder if one day you'll follow in your parents footsteps."
Baylie gazes up at him with her pretty eyes.
"I do not envy the man who steals your heart. I can see just how proud my best buddy Ice is of you. They'll have to go through him before they can have you," he laughs. "It's nice to finally meet you, Baylie. We have all been excited to see you."
At that moment, Maverick and Goose comes around the corner.
"Kerner? Who's kid is that? Didn't take you for a kidnapper," Goose teases.
"Ha. Ha. She's Kazansky's."
"This is Baylie?" Nick comes over and has a look. "Baby Kazansky. Now she's a cutie!"
Pete comes over and smiles.
"Little Baylie. She's going to be a fighter when she's older, I can see it."
Ice comes down the hall and sees all three men fussing over his daughter. He smiles. These were just a few of the people Baylie would be growing up around.
"I'm back."
Ron smiles as he hands Baylie over to her daddy. Ice holds his girl. He can't look away from her. The guys smile at him.
The moment is only broken when the ladies return to the group. Dragon and Whiskey are laughing. When they see Ice with his daughter, the laughter softens. Dragon joins her husband at his side and rests her head against his arm. They both look at their girl.
"The Kazansky's," Ron chuckles, wrapping an arm around his wife. "No one is going to mess with this family."
Whiskey chuckles.
Mav and Goose smile at Dragon. She smiles back at them.
"You look good," Mav says.
"I feel good."
Goose pulls her into a hug and she laughs. "Look at you, all grown up!"
"Nick!" She laughs.
"I can't wait for Bradley to meet her."
"Soon! I'll bring her round soon."
"Scarlet and I will look forward to it."
Tom puts Baylie back into the stroller and then turns back to Rachael.
"Shall we go?"
"You done?" She asks.
He nods. Rachael smiles and said bye to everyone. Ice and Dragon leave base.
Ice just wanted to go home and look after Baylie. He missed her today.

Tumblr media
The rest of the week went really fast. Thursday the four of you went to the Birch Aquarium.
Tumblr media
Friday, the four of you strolled through the San Diego Zoo. Jake carried Christian on his shoulders as you and Phoenix walked slowly behind. You push the stroller.
Tumblr media
Phoenix watched Jake and Christian in awe. "I just don't know what to say. He's the cockiest person I've ever met and you," She looks at you. "I don't know what you did." She goes back to observing Jake and Christian. "And C.J. adores Jake just as much as Jake adores him."
You look at Jake crouching down and looking at the bears with Christian.
Tumblr media
"You don't think I'm moving too fast, do you?" You stop walking and Phoenix looks at you.
"Y/N. I know Christian was your life." She looked at Jake and little Christian. "And you got lucky, and he left you a wonderful gift, but you deserve to be happy too. How Jake did it, I don't know, but if you're happy, then I'm happy for you."
"Thanks, Tosh." You hug and then hear the pitter patter of little feet running up to you and Phoenix. Jake not far behind.
"Ant Tosh! Come see!" Christian yells as he runs up to Phoenix and she lifts him up. He points at the bear exhibit he was just at with Jake.
"What is it?"
"Bears!"
"Bears? Well, let's go check it out." She carries Christian back over to the bear exhibit and Jake stays behind. You both watch Phoenix and Christian.
Jake looks at you. "He loves his animals."
Tumblr media
"That he does."
"Just like his momma."
You smile and shrug. "Maybe."
The two of you start walking toward Phoenix and Christian. When you reach them, Christian yawns and reaches out for Jake, who gladly takes him.
"Yake?"
"Yeah, bud?"
Christian rubs his eyes. "Tired."
You look at your watch. It is his nap time. "You want to go in your stroller?"
Christian grips Jake harder. "No! Yake!" He turns his head away from you and lays it on Jakes shoulder.
"It's okay. I got him," Jake assures you as you continue to walk through the zoo.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Later that night, you joined Phoenix and Jake at The Hard Deck. Amelia, the daughter of Penny Benjamin who owns the bar, offered to watch Christian for you.
Tumblr media
As you sipped on your wine cooler, you sat next to Phoenix's weapons system officer Robert 'Bob' Floyd and watched Jake playing pool.
"It's nice to officially meet you," Bob says.
"You too. Phoenix speaks very highly of you."
"Hey, Bob. Don't be trying to steal my woman over there," Jake cautions after taking a pool shot.
Tumblr media
You beam with a glint of mischief in your eyes. "Why Jake 'Hangman' Seresin. This is news to me."
Jake stood up, flabbergasted.
Tumblr media
"Darlin. I believe everyone in this bar is aware of that." He starts walking towards you.
"I wasn't."
"The hell you weren't." He pulls you to him and kisses you deeply.
The bar goes crazy.

Maverick didn't even really want to go out for Halloween. He never had in the past- but now that he had Charlotte he felt like he had to. Eve would've wanted to take her out for the holidays and have her all dressed up, so Mav went out and got her a little flower costume and had her out in her stroller with him. Turning when he heard the familiar voice, he laughed. "Jesus Christ it's like a whole convention of them. It's like everyone decided to do that and we didn't get the memo" he said, looking over at Sam. "What are you supposed to be dressed up as? A homeless guy?" Mav teased, knowing he wasn't in a costume. Holding out his hand, he asked, "You got a cig I could bum from you?" @samxbradford

closed starter for: @maverick-bennett where: halloween bash
His lack of costume made Sam stick out like a sore thumb, among vampires and ghosts, skeletons and at least ten different versions of Wednesday Addams. One hand was clenched as he pushed it down to the bottom of his jacket's pockets, the other holding a half-smoked cigarette, as he let blue-green eyes wander around the crowd, incessantly moving around him. Sam wondered how long it would take him to cease the undertaking of finding entertainment, though two steps more and a silver lining presented itself to him, in the appearance of a familiar companion.
"So," he began to speak, before taking a drag from his cigarette. "How many Addams Family characters have you seen so far?"

Trick or treat! 🎃🍬
HAPPY HALLOWEEN!!!! *drops extra big candy in your bucket*
(7) Finally, they were all ready to go.

Top Gun: Maverick | Bradley “Rooster” Bradshaw x Fem!OC
Also published on my Wattpad (-voidheroes)!
Tumblr media
Emerson Raye Bradshaw was laid out on the loveseat of her front porch, reading a book. Her two-year-old son, Nicky Bradshaw, was sprawled out on a blanket on her front lawn, playing with plastic toy fighter jets. Their family dog, Charlie, panted softly beside him, his tail thumping against the soft blanket.
A plane roared through the cloud-scattered sky. Nicky glanced up, grasping toward the sky with his chubby toddler hands. "Dadda," he called.
Emerson smiled out at her son, "That's right, Nicky! That's where Dadda is!" Although, it was a little past five o'clock and her husband would be home soon. Still, Nicky understood the relation between planes and his daddy after the several trips to his daddy's work, similar to when Goose took Bradley for a visit to Top Gun. Bradley was impatiently waiting for the day that his son was old enough to take on a joyride in one of the Navy's jets.
After their marriage a few years ago, the couple moved into Emerson's house. Bradley continued his work as a naval aviator, yet Emerson quit, wanting to provide a safe and stable relationship for their future family. Admiral Simpson appointed her the Director of Project Artemis, keeping her out of the skies. It was a big adjustment for Emerson, but it was a sacrifice she was willing to make for her son.
Over the years, Pete and Penny got married. It took Pete some time to adjust to life outside of the Navy. Though, he was more than willing to help Bradley and Emerson out with Nicky. In fact, last Halloween, he bought Nicky a baby flight suit and aviators and built him a miniature Maverick helmet. Pete pushed him in the stroller through California neighborhoods, earning the two a big bag of candy. He even tried to get his grandson to call him 'Mav', but it just wasn't catching on. Instead, he was better known as "Papa Pete". It was irritating at first, but Pete appreciated his new call sign.
Bradley's blue Bronco pulled up to the curb outside of the Bradshaw's home with the same squeal of brakes. "Dadda!" Nicky stumbled toward his daddy. Bradley picked his son up swiftly, tossing him into the air several times. He gently placed him back down on the blanket he was playing on and walked up the front porch steps to his wife. He planted a tender kiss on her lips, "How was work today, Captain?"
"Classified," she smirked. Project Artemis was a top-secret project the Navy had been developing since the Cold War. Though the two were married, Emerson was forced to keep her lips sealed.
Bradley was dressed in his typical attire of a Hawaiian shirt and his aviators, but Emerson knew he was on base for a mission debrief. "When's your next mission, Lieutenant Commander?"
"This weekend."
She clutched his shirt, tugging him down toward her. She kissed him deeply. "Well, I guess Nicky and I will just have to get as much of you as we can this week."
"How about I start with you," he whispered in her ear, his lips trailing down her neck. "You know I've always wanted a daughter." He picked her up bridal style; Emerson squealed, dropping her book in surprise.
"Babe, what about Nick!"
"Amelia is on her way over. She's taking him to the park," he said, carrying her back to their bedroom.
