Where the first Planescape Monstrous Compendium is essentially a restatement of the Outer Planes appendix and the second is a wellspring of monstrous adventure seeds, the third (1998) is a bit odd. It functions as a companion book to the Planescape sourcebooks for the Astral, Ethereal and, mostly, the Inner Planes. These are the least comprehensible regions of the multiverse — the Ethereal and Astral are essential the realities between realities, while the Inner Planes are home to all the raw elemental forces that form the building blocks of creation. The monsters in this book largely illustrate how life exists in those seemingly impossible-to-exist-in environments.

With the exception of the Astral, all these places always seems like a hard sell as settings for D&D. The monsters here…are all interesting in the same way something like Barlowe’s Guide to Extraterrestrials is interesting, but they don’t open up avenues of adventure for my brain the way the critters in MCII do. It’s all a little too abstract, a little too illustrative.

Which isn’t to say they aren’t COOL. They are! I just don’t find this book terribly useful. It is especially nice to see Cryonax, the tentacled yeti entity who rules evil cold monsters, in the book, tho. Love that weirdo.

And I think that is the last official Planescape product I had to share. Sad.

I feel the MCC team dont know what they want MCC to be. On the one hand it's a serious competition where teams need balancing for fairness and mechanics/games are changed if someone is able to excel at yet. But on the other, it's for fun and mechanics have to be changed so everyone can fun and theyll add elements from MCC scuffed or mcii to make games more fun.

The thing is, when MCC is treated as a serious competition then it can also be fun. Such as the punching element. Adding new games that focus on different things like pvp or whatever.

But the admin team try to sell MCC as both for fun and competitive instead of a competition where you can also have fun

couldn't have worded it better myself. and it cant be only 'for fun' when entire games are removed for years because one or two people dominate and the most hated and divisive game wasn't removed for a year for 'balancing' reasons.

Par contre, si notre rêve est confronté à une compréhension claire de la réalité, nous trouverons l’énergie nécessaire pour surmonter ou contourner les obstacles et atteindre l’avenir idéal.

Une psychologue, Gabriele Oettingen a développé une stratégie qui peut être mise en oeuvre avec succès pour allier rêve éveillé et pragmatisme : le WOOP ou Wish (souhait) Outcome (résultat, dénouement) Obstacle (obstacle) Plan (le plan)

D’autres ont proposé d’avoir recours au MCII (Mental Contrasting with Implementation Intention) ou Contraste mental avec intention de mettre en oeuvre.

Effectuer un contraste mental, c’est identifier la différence entre maintenant et l’avenir idéal et reconnaître/ressentir la peine et la tension qu’engendre cette différence.

C’est une façon de penser à l’endroit où vous êtes en contraste avec votre objectif, d’évaluer les différences et élaborer un plan pour les diminuer ou les éliminer.

Le contraste mental me paraît être une façon de réfléchir beaucoup plus réaliste (et complète/complexe) que la pensée positive ou négative.

Mikal Cronin: Digging For Something

Mikal Cronin bucked the trend and didn’t call his fourth studio album MCIV. Joke and coincidence aside, it’s fitting, and the title he chose, Seeker, is even more so. Each record has been more exploratory than the rest, in terms of composing for different instruments and fitting complex song structures to his restless mind. For Seeker, Cronin went to Idyllwild, a small town in Southern California, with just his cat, and wrote and demoed most of the record in a cabin. He had to leave a few days early because an arsonist set fire to the region, so like always, urgency trumped scrutiny. But what resulted were a batch of songs ready for live recording with Jason Quever (Papercuts), Ty Segall’s familiar Freedom Band backing Cronin along the way.

Catching Cronin perform these songs with a different band last month at Lincoln Hall was also a revelation for how faithful they were to the studio recordings, even sometimes missing elements. Minus the orchestration, “Shelter” kept its clattering drums and slinky guitar line. “Show Me” continued to be a “Mary Jane’s Last Dance”-esque dirge. And “Fire” was buoyed by sludgy stop-starts.

It’s telling that, these days, Cronin plays very little from his most acclaimed records, his first two, including just the debut’s “Apathy” and MCII standout “Weight”. Instead, his non-Seeker set-list focuses on MCIII, headlined by epic ripper “Say”. If his first two albums are more beloved because they introduced the world to a songwriter with an uncanny ability to seamlessly combine heavy riffs and pop smarts, it’s perhaps the ambitious latter two that will age better over time.
