💖 What do you like most about your own writing? 🏅 What is something you recently felt proud of in regard to your writing (finished a fic, actually planned for once, etc). 🌝 Who is one character you haven’t yet written for that you would like to?

💖 I feel like I've always described senses/sensations really well in my writing? It's also something I pay a lot of attention to in others writing, both as examples of what to do and what not to do.

🏅Ah! I can shameless plug here but I finally posted the first chapter of my MCiT longfic, ! It was something I've been toying around with for years and I'm really proud I'm actually putting words to paper now!

🙂 Hmmm there's a lot. I feel like Meredith is a character I want to explore writing, but have never had much of an excuse to write. She's definitely one I've thought about a lot! I remember running into her for the first time during Dragon Age 2 and thinking 'Templar Commander who's a woman? And she's not running around in skimpy clothes?!'

I’d be really interesting if the mgit had a crush on a character before coming to thedas, but then realizing oh shit the crush is actually kind of scary/insane/etc? Like Cullen being an addict and solas being an ancient god. But it’s too late and the crush falls in obsessive love with them. Be careful what you wish for kind of thing.

On Exchange Letters

Exchange Letters (also known as "Dear Creator Letters", "Dear (Event) Author", or "Dear Santa" for holiday exchanges) are letters created to include with a gift exchange sign up. They are sometimes used in place of the prompt/optional details field and sometimes in conjunction with.

These letters often contain more in depth information which might not fit in the AO3 Prompt field due to length; they can also be easier to include non-text information (like links and images) as the Prompt field would require basic HTML to do so. They often contain information on general likes and preferences, do not wants (DNWs), preferred formats for writing, art preferences, in depth prompts, AUs, kinks, tropes, what you like about certain ships or the fandom in general, etc. In exchanges that allow OCs (like Dragon Age Poly Exchange) letters can also contain info on OCs.

An all encompassing letter should contain everything your giftee would need to know in order to create a gift you would enjoy. A letter designed to be used in conjunction with the Prompt field is usually shorter, containing only the general information which applies to every request being made while the prompts for the specific ships or requests are placed into the Prompt field. Once written, you can drop a link to it in each request in the Letter/Additional Info field of your sign-up.

What to Include

If you're writing your first letter or are revising your current one, you might be wondering where to start. We recommend starting by scrolling through your AO3 bookmarks and want to reads and jotting down any tags you see repeated often and by thinking about what you use to filter when you're searching for something to read. For your DNWs think about what squicks you avoid, any triggers you might have, or things that just make you hit the back button and not read a fic.

You can include things like POVs, tenses, styles of writing, general tropes (fluff, angst, smut), or more specific tropes (Hurt/Comfort). If that's not helping or you feel like you're forgetting something check out the following links with lists of common tropes, AUs, and kinks/fetishes. As you scroll through them make sure to note your likes and DNWs.

It's definitely not necessary to list everything in the below lists as a like or DNW. There are certain things which are going to be rare or non-existent in the DA fandom (i.e. underage fic isn't common because most characters are adults, compared to other fandoms like Harry Potter) but there are others which are exclusive to DA (for example, MCiT - Modern Character in Thedas). It's more important that your letter hit the big points. If your giftee has questions they can always reach out to you on anon (if you have them on) OR get in contact with a moderator so we can get more details.

Where to Host Your Letter

Your letter can be hosted in many of the same places as your OC content from our post: Where to Host OC Content.

Google Drive/gDocs

By far the most popular place to host exchange letters currently. Many of the same tips and tricks for OC content hold true for your letter. You can link to other docs and external sites, add images, use templates, etc. Please check out the Where to Host OC Content post for lots of details on using Google products for exchanges!

Tumblr

You can also drop your letter into a regular tumblr post or page. If you would like to keep your letter off your mutuals' dashes you can make the post private and then a few hours (or days) later make it public. It will not appear on their dash if they sort by popularity or by timeline unless it suddenly gets a lot of likes.

Livejournal/Dreamwidth/Wordpress/Other Blogging Site

Although not as widely used now as tumblr, Livejournal and Dreamwidth are still around and you can post on these sites for your letter. Wordpress or other blogging sites like Blogger are not as popular for fandom endeavors, but they can absolutely be used for a fandom letter, too.

Wix.com/Weebly.com/Other Free Webhosts

This option might be too much if you’re just doing a letter, but if you’re planning using one of the above for your OC content, you can make your fandom letter a page within that website!

Your AO3 Profile

Exchange Letters are not allowed to be posted as separate works on AO3; however, according to the AO3 Content FAQ (we recommend using CTRL+F to search for “letter” to find the right question) you can post general likes/preferences on your profile which means you could use this space for a general letter designed to be used in addition to your Prompt field. Although you can do this, we think one of the other options above is a better idea, as profile space is relatively limited.

MCIT/MGIT Prompt: Skyhold the musical

Modern Character in Thedas comes through as a spirit of music and dance. And they put a spell on Skyhold, making the inhabitants dance and sing their thoughts and feelings in the form of songs from Earth and sometimes choreographed!  With only the Solas and Cole immune to the spell's effect. But Cole participates anyway and Solas is just confused. Zither isn’t immune but he helps play the music and takes great pleasure in prompting the singing.

“Open source is a development methodology; free software is a social movement.” -Richard Stallman

Readings: “Why Open Source misses the point of Free Software” (Richard Stallman) and “The Cathedral and the Bazaar” (Eric Steven Raymond)

Before completing these readings, I wasn’t aware that free software and open source represented two completely different camps; I had a vague understanding of open source since the term is thrown around a lot in developers’ circles, but didn’t know that there was also a “free software” and that both terms have been confused for one another. But now that I’ve learned how they differ, I’d say I’m more convinced of the values of open source than that of free software. 

Stallman makes it clear that free software differs from open source in that the former makes every effort to protect the freedom of the users and ensure that users are at the liberty to study and modify the software in whatever way that meets their needs. And I agree that all that is important, and that the values of the free software movement are worth protecting. But as someone who studies CS and is learning what it means to develop good software, I feel that I would be able to learn more about building great products from an open source culture as described by Raymond. In particular, the idea of involving many people in the debugging and development of software resonated with me personally. Throughout my time in MCIT, I found that I learned much more in group projects than in homework assignments that I completed alone. Even in a group as small as three, throughout the process each person saw different bugs that the other two wouldn’t have been able to see on their own. Each person brought their own ideas and understandings that not only contributed to the fixes and features of the project we were building, but also helped each other fill in gaps in knowledge. 

Though open source may not champion the freedom of the users like the free software movement, those in open source (or at least, those with good intentions) still uphold the needs of the users by building products that best serve them, and often times (like that of Raymond’s), the users/testers are the ones who are prompting fixes by reporting bugs and making feature suggestions. Maybe there is more value in Stallman’s argument for the free software movement that I don’t understand because I don’t have much development experience outside of the classroom, but as of now I find that the practical value from an open source culture much more convincing that the idealistic one of the free source movement.

The one remaining question I have is how to resolve what Stallman briefly mentioned as “FLOSS” or “FOSS” - the neutral stance between free software and open source. Not much was said on this term, but to me it doesn’t seem reasonable that anyone would be able to find middle ground given that both represents very different ideas and beliefs.

concept: necromancer tries to bring someone back to life for real (instead of just doing the zombie thing) but since this is experimental magic (and maybe because the breach just kinda blew up all magic rules like it did with time magic) they screw up and drag and an earthling through the fade instead

Hey guys I’m here, just been working on the MCIT challenge week prompts since the date for it is coming up soon.

So I enjoy the mgit trope, but people seem to miss the insanity of someone driving through a rift with an SUV. Can you imagine Bull and the Chargers fighting a rift they’re passing by on the way to Inquisition. When suddenly a horseless carriage bursts from the portal and crushes a demon in the process.

I love it. The potential for chaotic moments like this are one of my favorite things about this trope.
