sugar's struggle with her trans identity is as colorful and intricate as her fabulous wardrobe. ever since she was three, she knew she was a girl—there was no question about it! she wore the prettiest dresses, twirled with the grace of a princess, and expected everyone to treat her like the queen she knew she was. her parents were her biggest cheerleaders, always making sure she felt awesome and loved. but, oh boy, the world outside her glittery bubble wasn’t always so kind. sugar’s confidence sparkles, but behind that sparkle is way more fear than she’d like to admit. being trans in the world is a constant, scary thing—like a dark cloud that just won’t go away. before she transferred to mckinley, the bullying was so awful she had to leave. a fresh start, her parents told her. with the exception of her family, sebastian, spencer, and ryder, that part of her past is like a heavy purse filled with unwanted and super ugly memories. she hates having to explain what is "between her legs" and how she is just as much of a woman as anyone else every time she wants to be intimate with someone. pride week is hard for sugar because it feels like the choice to be proud was snatched away from her, leaving her with no option but to wear her pride like a shield. even with all this, sugar tries to keep her bubbly, confident self intact, dreaming of a day when everyone sees her just the way she always has: as the fabulous, undeniable girl she truly is.

Kitty looks uncharacteristically nervous to sing today, and instead of launching into a song, she gets out a piece of paper and begins to read from it: 

“I don’t normally explain myself before I sing in here…I usually hope that the song speaks for itself, but I feel like I wanna explain myself today because…well, there’s been a hell of a lot of rumors about me, and i decided that i don’t care about them anymore for a lot of reasons, but the main reason is…well, my parents told me last night that they’re getting a divorce. They don’t believe in divorce, or so I thought. You know what else they don’t believe in? LGBTQIA people. But just like divorce is a reality, LGBTQIA people are a reality, and their daughter is one. That's something they're going to have to deal with, just like I'm going to have to deal with their dysfunction as they go forward with their separation. I’m bisexual. I was really afraid to admit that. I still am. It was hard to write and it is hard to say out loud. I'm going to tell my parents, but I wanted to start by telling my friends, so...anyway, my ultimate gay icon is Chappell Roan, I listened to her all summer while I cried on and off about how much I like girls. She brought me joy where I didn't have a lot of it and she is part of why I feel safe enough to tell you guys my truth today...even if I'm pretty sure the closet was made of plastic wrap. while he always knew he was attracted to girls, he was around fifteen years old when he realized he was also attracted to guys. a weird and confusing realization for someone so young, even more so for someone who has always struggled with his own emotions. puck soon realized that it was okay, especially after speaking to his mom about it and recognizing that the only thing that mattered to her was his happiness. he started hooking up with both, though hookups with guys were always very lowkey until the last year or so. puck owns his sexuality and doesn't care what people have to say about it. they can talk about it all they want, it's not going to make him change anything about himself.

the clarington’s are a very traditional, mother at home and father the breadwinner. they come from old money on both sides of the family. james from a long line of naval officers and various businessmen (with a lot of political ambitions), while elizabeth comes from british aristocracy. james is a bit tough on his children, but this is only because he knows their potential and wants them to not only reach it but surpass it. he pushes them harder so that they develop a tough skin and so that no one else can reach them first. elizabeth is far gentler, more doting and loves to constantly reaffirm and reward them with homemade baked goods and anything else that she knows her children like. thus the children are all incredibly high achievers and competitive, even amongst themselves but are quick to join forces together against others if anyone tries to mess with one of their own. though the girls do relish ganging up on hunter.
