OKAY More Bridgerton season 3 trailer thoughts, these are both sort of random, partially analysis, partially conspiracy-y. The second part is more direct analysis of two shots in the trailer though.

Okay, so because of this trailer, I don't know for sure if Benedict's season will be season 4--or, at least, I am curious as to how they will bring about his romance this season to set up season 4 after so little inkling as to his romance. Francesca dominates this trailer in terms of romance--literally the first shot in this trailer of anyone in the Bridgerton family is of Francesca--not even Colin, who's season it is.

The spotlight is also completely on her and--as we see in this trailer--a spotlight means quite a lot in terms of romance. (ex: Penelope and Debling dancing with the spotlight just on her, and the Cupid/Psyche spotlight on the dance floor, etc.)

Benedict is not featured romantically at all. Actually, he is not seen in the second part of the trailer, which is when there is a shift to romance. Also in almost all promos, he is not seen in a romantic light, but rather a playful one as compared to Francesca, who is debuting and dancing with suitors, etc. Could they be hiding this for the actual season? Oh, for sure, I definitely think so. But, also considering how seasons are going and the balance they might want to have with their Bridgerton leads, they might not want to do 3 seasons in a row with the Bridgerton brothers as the main leads? Just a thought, though.

Francesca's story just might end up being the foil to Colin/Penelope's story this season, which would be interesting. I also wonder how that will develop if Benedict is the lead for Season 4. We have to wait and see.

SECOND THOUGHT: You did not need this shot of this actress in this edit--it is a choice to have her here.

This is a sort of longer shot--these two are a whole 4 seconds. That might not seem like a lot of time, but for two shots with minimal movement--two close up/OTS (over the shoulder) shots--within a less than 3 minute trailer, that is a lot of time.

I have seen some people online argue that they wanted to show that this wasn't Penelope and that they are trying to show him being more of a "charmer" as he returns from his trip to highlight his glow-up--as this section of the trailer does. This is true, BUT you already had her in the frame in that first shot and she is clearly not Penelope. It would have been enough to just have him kiss her hand if you wanted to demonstrate this. Maybe they want to show that he doesn't charm everyone--he isn't the typical "rake"--and just wanted to focus on one woman? Sure. But, they could have had a wider shot--they could have included others that weren't marriage-able women, like this character's family. Instead, they have a whole frame dominated by one actress who we do not know--a reverse of the first shot that keeps the focus on THEIR dynamic, THEIR faces, not on Colin's relationship with women in general.

The audio for this sequence is also just the music for these full 4 seconds. It is a choice to not have dialogue. When you don't have dialogue, the audience pays more attention to what they have available--the visuals. This draws direct attention to these two.

Listen, I am not saying 100% that she is going to be a huge part of this season, BUT I don't think she'll just be a one-off, maybe slightly more featured. I could be wrong, but everything is a choice in film and especially when releasing a trailer for a series, you are deliberate in what you do and do not show.

One other note, the next audio that comes up is Benedict talking about Colin's "sturdiness," which immediately associates the two. Yes, this is to focus on Colin's change, but hey it's there and we all are looking for hints as to who Benedict's love interest will be.

I think the Tiktok reactions to Ulterior Motives/Everyone Knows that is so interesting.

Bit of a random and maybe weird post if you haven’t heard of this subject.

If you don’t know this was pretty popular ‘lost media’ and many people genuinely liked the song and were excited to find a longer version of the 17s that was available. Turns out it’s actually from and 80s adult movie and the reactions to this have been super interesting to witness. Most people are of course shocked but after the shock wore of and the jokes began I think there’s a very obvious difference in how people approach stuff related to sex.

I think we can all laugh at the actual origins but the people who seem to find it embarrassing or shameful especially if they think that about listening to the song need to grow up.

I’ve seen some interesting takes and conversations where people delve into this side of the industry and others just being genuinely cool about it (still joking and laughing). People talking about how there are a few released music and rare vinyls from artists who have featured in these movies obviously also had tried making it in a more general audience sort of way. This isn’t the first time people have tried to find artists through these… movies. Not everyone will become a star but it’s legit work to make music for that industry and years later there are people who genuinely enjoy the music.

Clearly the creator of this song was successful at what he does. He’s got a long list of musical credits for this type of movie.

But there are a lot of people who very clearly find anything remotely related to sex embarrassing and shameful in an immature sort of way. I’ve seen people say (most likely in a joking way) that it’s ‘traumatising’ as if it’s cringe and terrible.

Like people are really weird about the fact that the op (I can’t remember his name so I’ll say that) watch this film. It’s funny that he started an online search for the song yeah but not so much that he watched it. He took the time to record the song yeah that’s funny but people act like he’s the only guy ever to watch an adult movie.

Like yes it’s funny but I think it’s a pretty good subject to see tiktok purity culture.

I don’t want to see the film or hear unedited version of the song so I do get a bit of how people react. But that doesn’t mean that it makes the song inherently bad or wrong, I’ll just find the clean version (or ignore it existence if I was really that uncomfortable)

My point is sometime tiktok feels like it’s full of kids who just found out what sex was for thre fist time and thing it’s gross and icky instead of just growing up and getting over themselves and this was just a really interesting example of that

Hello all! I spent a few days playing Fashion Dreamer, and have been having a blast! It's not 'Style Savvy', but it ever meant to be! I have some concerns.. But first... Outfit(s) of the day! (Fasion Dreamer ID: a8xv8rRA3A)

Alright, so my thoughts on the game as a whole. (not a review) It's super fun..if you know what you're getting into. It's closer to most modern 'Dress-UP' apps than classic Style Savvy. But that's really what I was looking for! You can think of it as Shining Niki, Covet Fashion, etc, But with no microtransactions, and a much heavier emphasis on community! The game DOES NOT require a paid switch online subscription, It ABSOLUTELY requires wifi to get the full experience. All the events are online-only, you can see and dress up other players characters (muses) based on their stated preferences, And you can even put in requests from people you've met, or you can just list your preferences for anyone to style. You specify your style, colors, patterns, etc, and other players will send you custom outfits!

(sorry, this filter looks really bad in screenshots) I played the game for a few days via emulator, while waiting for my copy of the game to arrive. And honestly, 'Offline Mode" felt like an entirely different game. You can still dress up your character, and fulfill outfit request for NPC's, and design your own showroom, but that's it.

The world feels much smaller when just cycling through the same small handful of NPC's with very similar dialogue. You still play the role of an "influencer", looking to grow their online following and brand, But without any other real players, it just becomes a grindy numbers game.

You make check the billboards, grab the items, make an outfit, take a photo, and get automatic 'likes' from the game's imaginary public. Then you just keep doing it over and over to increase your 'follower count. There are a few bonus things you can do, such as take pictures with other people, and 'pin' the post to boost incoming 'likes' and 'follows', But without the online community aspect, it's extremely repetitive.

And that's where the title of the post comes in, The game was clearly designed similar to a live service game, the players are expected to be online almost all the time, and new features and items become available over time. However, while this game is $50, it doesn't feature microtransactions

That's a HUGE plus for me, But it makes me wonder how financially viable this game will be for the publisher in the long run. When the sales start to slow, they'll have far less money coming in, And that may make it harder to keep updating the game. And if they stop updating the game, older fans may stop playing Less people online means the 'community' aspect will lessen ...And at the end of the day there are server cost to consider.

So it really makes me wonder, how long they'll choose to support this game. Will the game end up with a "best if used by date", because the game costs the devs some amount of money just to keep it running, ...not even including the time it takes to make more items to keep people interested. I've been having a lot of fun now, but I think they should have focused a bit more on the single player experience, and implemented more interesting offline goals. As who knows, 3, 5, 10 years down the line, the game I'm enjoying now will may longer exist. ---- Sorry for the more 'bleak' post, I'd still highly recommend this game to those who think it sounds interesting. I've just seen a ton of VERY Strong opinions on this game, but no one mentioning the live service trappings. Anyways, feel free to leave your thoughts or comments down below!

Takahiro Mizuno, Director and Chief Tamagotchi Officer at Bandai Japan Featured in Nikkei Business Publications Article on Tamagotchi Uni

Nikkei Business Publications is a book and magazine publisher based  in Tokyo, Japan which also features a website on all things business. With Tamagotchi gearing up for the next major anniversary, and the release of the Tamagotchi Uni, Nikkei Business Publications featured an article about the Tamagotchi Uni, and even spoke with Takahiro Mizunio, Director and Chief Tamagotchi Officer, and Hirohiko Sekito, Global Toy Planning Department Planning Team Manager.

The article reviews the new Tamagotchi Uni and how it features Wi-Fi connectivity, along with pink and purple shell colors which are popular amongst generation Z. With the Tamagotchi brand a few years away from the 30th anniversary, it is not uncommon to see three generations of Tamagotchi-loving family fans.

Throughout the years, there have been releases of Tamagotchi in select markets, but regular market updates were limited to the Japan market. One of the features of the Tamagotchi Uni is that this is a global model that unifies all design and play content. 

Mr. Takahiro Mizuno, Chief Tamagotchi Officer explains the the reason why it became the same model worldwide. As the Tamagotchi Original was re-released in North America, the Tamagotchi was discovered more and more and people starting enjoying it as a fashion item instead of accessories, inflicters and celebrities wore them. Would you look at that, the Tamagotchi Original was a huge influence for a global release, remember that!

It was widely recognized not only by those who play with it, but also the young people of generation Z who were unaware of the trends. It means a lot that Tamagotchi fans all over the world can play with the same model! We agree!

Tamagotchi Original has become a mega-hit product with shipments of approximately 4.4 million units in Europe and the United States between 2018 and 2022. In 2022 they were released again in Japan, sold in WEGO stores for the young demographic, and succeeded in acquiring a new target for people in their teens and twenties. “I feel that a new brand value has been created,” says Mr. Mizuno.

The Tamagotchi Smart was the first wearable model which returned to the original concept of caregiving play and was a model that was more enjoyable to play alone. However the spread of online culture due to COVID-19 has boosted the installation of Wi-Fi in the Tamagotchi Uni.

Mr. Daihiko Sekito of Bandai, who was in charge of planning, recalls, "I wanted to create an environment where I could communicate with fans around the world with my own Tamagotchi. The Wi-Fi function that allowed me to connect to the Internet was essential.”

The Wi-Fi function uses IoT service of Amazon Web Services, designed to withstand the connection of more than 1 million units worldwide. Mr. Mizuno says, "It's great to be able to update and add functions. Adding fun will make it a model that you can play for a longer time than before." Although it is such a small device, it has become a platform like a smartphone.

There are also opportunities to interact with influencers and talents who acted as image characters for this promotion. Limited-time game events are held at Tama Arena, and event information is available via the cloud.

In the medium-term plan that started in 2022, we set the goal of “Connect with Fans” and set the goal of deepening global connections centered on IP (intellectual property).”I think that the environment for Japanese products to sell overseas has become even better. Now is the perfect opportunity for the BANDAI NAMCO Group to increase the value of its IP. I would like to ride this trend and expand Tamagotchi more and more." Mr. Mizuno)

It is very interesting to see both Takahiro Mizuno and Daihiko Sekito of Bandai interacting with the Tamagotchi Uni together, and with Tamagotchi Uni packaging from outside of Japan. This was an awesome article that really provides some additional insight into the Tamagotchi Uni and how the COVID-19 pandemic accelerated the development of a Tamagotchi that connects the globe together.

There's been some noise on the topic, so I did some research into Google's AI training/data policies, and it is not pretty.

The whole unpleasant adventure started when I read someone claim that Google scrapes the content of Google docs to train AI. This understandably worried me, because I use Google Docs for many purposes, including academic and creative endeavors that I put lots of time and effort into. So i did some digging to find out whether this was true.

Google says it doesn't use data from user content (such as Gmail and Docs) except to provide the relevant services like the Docs grammar checker or the Gmail spam detector, unless it has explicit user permission to use the data for other purposes. Google says it only uses publicly available data to train AI. A lot of people read that, feel reassured, and stop there. I wanted more elaboration, so I kept going.

In their privacy policy, Google states, "we use publicly available information to help train Google’s AI models and build products and features like Google Translate, Bard, and Cloud AI capabilities." Now I think it's a red flag that they mentioned that in their privacy policy. The purpose of a privacy policy is to detail how a company deals with the data/information of its users. If they're using public information that the users aren't involved with, why would they put that in their privacy policy instead of somewhere else? This seems like they're trying to assert an irrelevant claim that users have to agree to when they click "I agree" or check "I have read the privacy policy" before using the service.

On the upside, their privacy policy does look like it protects private user data, and only uses it in ways you agree to or to provide the services you are using. And even if it's a little weird that they're bringing it up in their privacy policy, using publicly available data sounds like an okay thing to do.

But here's where it gets really icky: By "publicly available data," they don't just mean "data that's available for public use," they mean "data that's available for public viewing."

According to Google's interpretation, "publicly available data" doesn't just mean data that's open for public use, it means any data that's accessible to the public. Therefore, as Google is using the term:

Your tumblr post is publicly available data

Your ao3 fic (if not set to only be viewable to people with an account) is publicly available data

Designs posted on redbubble or etsy so people can see what they're buying from you is publicly available data

Any Google doc set to "anyone with the link can view" is publicly available data

Articles posted for you to read online are publicly available data

Photos, including of your face and likeness, posted where the general public can view are publicly available data

The list goes on.

Google's chief legal officer said, "We’ve been clear for years that we use data from public sources—like information published to the open web and public datasets—to train the AI models behind services". I looked it up and the "open web" means websites that are public and viewable by everyone without requiring a subscription fee. So this is a whole lot more than the parts of the web that are open for copyright-free use. It in fact encompasses the majority of the things most people use the internet for. Google is literally saying that anything and everything that's not protected by either a password or a paywall is fair game for them to use for their own purposes.

So I mentioned this earlier in my rant about "publicly available data," but: Google docs. Google docs set to private are considered private user data by Google. However, if you set a Google doc to "anyone can view" or even "anyone with the link can view," Google no longer considers it private. If just anyone can look at it, Google can scrape it, according to their claims, because now it's "publicly available." In a Google support thread, when a user expressed concerns about Google scraping data from documents set to "anyone with link," the Product Expert who responded simply demanded evidence and quoted an article which didn't actually successfully refute these worries. He didn't provide real evidence to the contrary, he didn't cite any policies about Google safely handling users' data, he didn't even try to claim the accusation was wrong. He just deflected by saying they didn't have evidence. And that was where the thread ended.

Google claims to "give opportunity for notice and consent" in their AI principles. At best they are failing. I think it's more likely they are actively ignoring this principle for their own gain. Not everyone who posts to the open web does so through Google, and therefore not everyone who posts to the open web looks at Google's privacy policy, much less agrees to it, before posting. Thus, few to none of these people were given notice that Google would use the data they posted to the web, and few to none of them provided consent for any of that data to be used by Google. And yet Google claims that it can use anything posted to the open web. (And that's even discounting that many people who do use Google but don't actually read through the privacy policy.)

It's bad enough that AI scrapes the web to use data that doesn't belong to them. Done by Google, it feels especially slimy. As a major search engine, Google has a ridiculous amount of access to what's on the web, and it's basically impossible to post things in a way that allows you to reach the people you want to without being accessible to Google. Google does not own the internet, yet they are acting like simply having access to it gives them all the rights to it. They use harmless-sounding, pretty language like "publicly available information" but what they're doing is far less innocent than they want you to believe.

Now, I despise the posts that are all about doom and gloom without informing readers that they can do something about it. The purposes of this post are to educate and inspire action, not to make you feel helpless or hopeless. So here are some things you can do about this:

Contact Google with feedback and complaints. Let them know that they cannot get away with this and still have a userbase of happy campers.

Check your privacy settings, including those on individual Google docs. Don't let Google use your data for more than you want them to.

Push for legislature that protects intellectual property against AI scraping. Try to provide better grounds to stand on for the people who are fighting against data-stealing AI.

Support legal actions, such as lawsuits, against Google on this and closely related topics. The more support the people working against this have, the more likely they are to succeed.

Look into alternatives to the Google services. They don't seem to be so fast and loose with private user data that you need to transfer right away as long as you're staying informed, but it's definitely not good to be dependent on them. At the very least you should be ready to move away from Google quickly in case things get even worse.

Hello! I saw on your YouTube you said that there are a lot of videos you haven’t posted because they got taken down. You could try using Vimeo to post those videos because they aren’t strict with copyright and things like that. I would love to see some videos I haven’t seen before on there!

I started to do that last year with a couple videos, but then I took them down because I'm nervous about the legality of that... like if it gets straight up removed from youtube during the uploading process then I don't think I should post the full thing anywhere else. I've tried to add very short clips of the best moments from some of those videos into my longer edits, though! but in some cases even a few seconds of just the audio from an interview gets the whole edit blocked. And that seems silly because all of this content used to be available to download on fan sites like nbd... and I especially don't get why the SNL performance gets blocked when the rest of that episode seems to be on youtube just fine.

But it's not like I'm over here sitting on hundreds of videos that aren't online, sorry. There are only maybe 10-20 that haven't worked to upload. I'm missing a tragic amount of content. I really regret not saving more... I never planned to have an account like this where I'd be trying to recap stuff, and I didn't realize things back then were so temporary either. Blame Viacom. Here’s a list of some of the content I think I’m missing so far.

side tangent that’s slightly relevant:

Youtube wasn't that widely used in 2005 when P!ATD started touring. I remember using it more by spring 2006 (and then it was huge by that summer), but for a while fans were most likely to upload their videos from shows to sites that no longer exist, like buzznet. That's why there are only scraps of random videos from fall 2005 left on youtube... and those were often uploaded later from someone who didn't film them. For example, there are a lot of GroveStBrent's videos from a Chain Reaction show in December 2005 left on youtube because that person lost their original files around the end of the Fever era and asked if anyone had saved their videos. Those got collected, put into a zip file, passed around, and then someone put them on youtube. So the fact that there are way more youtube videos from that one show at Chain Reaction than anything else in late 2005 doesn't mean it had any special significance... those videos were just shared at a point when youtube was more commonly used. I think this is important to point out because it seems like some teens these days are under the impression that P!ATD wasn’t very big yet in fall 2005 since there are barely any videos from that season on youtube. The reality is that P!ATD was already quite popular in fall 2005… but youtube wasn’t. 

Anyways, people starting using youtube more as 2006 progressed and there was SO much content shared from shows & interviews during the last half of the Fever era. The problem was that apparently MTV owned a ridiculous amount of the shows/channels that P!ATD was featured on (even stuff like Razer). Viacom sued youtube around the end of the Fever era, which meant a good chunk of the Panic fandom's videos were deleted and some channels were removed for repeatedly trying to re-upload banned content. That's why so many of the Fever-era interviews that are left have an upload date of 2007 or later. And that's why we're left with scraps like that pathetically blurry short clip of Brendon holding Ryan's hand instead of the whole series of those T-Minus Rock episodes. 

Basically, I'm trying to share some basic content that the fandom had in 2006-2008, but I'm also trying to not do anything sketchy. The majority of the videos that I'm missing or just can't upload are tied to Viacom in some way... and it's so sad because what is any company even doing with that footage at this point.

5 Years Later: INCREDIBLES 2

Has it already been almost five years since the release of an animated movie sequel that arrived nearly 14 years after its predecessor?

INCREDIBLES 2 turns 5 in June. June 15th, to be exact, the general release date. Or the 14th, if you count theaters that do pre-shows. That's a UK poster above, it was July 13th over there... Anyways, around that frame! I want to talk about that movie...

I actually unironically love INCREDIBLES 2.

Maybe I'm very online, but it seems like this Pixar sequel isn't so... Well-liked? I often see talk of it being this big disappointment, that the "twist" kills it, that it wasn't worth the wait, etc. etc.

I don't know. I saw INCREDIBLES 2 the pre-show Thursday night back in 2018. I had seen the original THE INCREDIBLES in theaters *five* times back in fall 2004 and even into early 2005. It's one of my all-time favorite films, a massive influence on my own work, and a movie that I...

Didn't demand a sequel to...

Yeah, that's right, I'm not like everybody else. Everybody else who all said "I waited 14 years for this!" I didn't... I waited... Four years. The Walt Disney Company, during a shareholder's conference, officially announced that the movie was in the works in March of 2014. Prior to that, I didn't feel that a sequel needed to exist. The ending of the first movie is an homage to serial cliffhangers, it wasn't the filmmakers saying in 2004 "we'll be back!" Writer-director Brad Bird went off to do other movies, and wanted to pursue other movies, some of which never happened (1906), some of which finally are (RAY GUNN)... He had often said he had various ideas for an INCREDIBLES sequel and would only commit to them if he had a story to tie them all together, but that didn't mean that a sequel was going to happen. At least, any time soon back then.

Inevitably, if your animated movie was a big blockbuster and the main characters all didn't die at the end, your animated movie is getting a sequel. THE INCREDIBLES came out when Pixar still couldn't feasibly make sequels per their strict contract with Disney at the time. TOY STORY 2 was a complicated exception that caused even more problems regarding this "no sequels" rule... but that very "no sequels" mandate was overridden in early 2006 when CEO Bob Iger, shortly after taking over from his predecessor - Michael Eisner, bought the Emeryville-based studio from Steve Jobs. That being said, Bird was directing RATATOUILLE, and then departed Pixar to pursue live-action movies, resulting in MISSION: IMPOSSIBLE - GHOST PROTOCOL for Paramount... But then he circled back to Disney, to direct TOMORROWLAND, which was already a Damon Lindelof-conceived script that was floating around for about a year at the studio... And then, he finally directed INCREDIBLES 2. Pixar could've easily put an INCREDIBLES 2 in development circa 2006 for a 2010-2011 release, but they waited for Bird to be available, and then they got started.

So, back in the late 2000s and early 2010s, I already understand that concept... But I get it, lots of people who aren't a nerd like I, and don't follow how the feature animation biz works... Assumed that Pixar just sat on an INCREDIBLES sequel for over a decade and then finally said "Okay, we'll make it."

Anyways... I really do dig INCREDIBLES 2 as a sequel to one of my favorite films.

I don't think it's as great, which... I'll be fair, the original was a hard act to follow. Most original movies that really work for me usually spawn a sequel that has a hard time being just as good in my eyes, if not better. Only TOY STORY 2, in terms of Pixar sequels, I feel is this scenario. So, as such, I wasn't so tough on films like FINDING DORY and MONSTERS UNIVERSITY. There were still many things I liked and loved in both of those, and that made them every bit as worthy. INCREDIBLES 2, I feel, came pretty close to being as good as THE INCREDIBLES.

For one, I love that this is kind of a vibes sequel. It's two minutes longer than the original - at 118 minutes long, and has a few action setpieces here and there. Whenever they do occur, they rule! Bird and his crew just went hard with the action beats, from the runaway electric train chase to the fight with the Screenslaver in the strobe-light cage. Excellent stuff.

Unlike the first INCREDIBLES, the majority of this film doesn't take place on an island, so we get to see more of the retrofuturistic midcentury-modern world that Bird created in the first movie and expanded upon in this sequel. In the first INCREDIBLES, we see city blocks, yes, and some locations, Edna Mode's house, the kids' schools and Bob Parr's workplace. But that's about it. Here, the Parr family are in a new home on a hillside, there's a whole new city we explore, locations like a diner, the DevTech skyscraper, Rick Dicker's office, and a motel. We get to see other Supers besides the Parrs and Frozone in action, because in the first film, we only see glimpses of them in the prologue, Syndrome killed all of them off. Here, we meet a bunch of bizarre and not-quite-amazing superheroes who are often used as obstacles by the villain throughout, but some of them try to pull their weight and prove themselves. Particularly Voyd, I like her little admiration of Elastigirl and how that pushes her to really try her powers out. They're a bunch of very strange, weirdly-designed characters that only add to the colorful cast of this world. That Reflux guy is literally me, by the way. It was cool to hang out and exist in that world with these characters, with a solid script and tight dialogue to match. I can't see what's not to like. It's more about the family than it is the hero work and the spectacle, but... As was the first movie.

That's what makes both INCREDIBLES movies unique to most other big superhero spectacles, both in 2004 and in 2018... Pre-MCU and post-MCU. For context, INCREDIBLES 2 opened just about a month after AVENGERS: INFINITY WAR and DEADPOOL 2... And shared the year with BLACK PANTHER, ANT-MAN AND THE WASP (which opened right after it), VENOM, and SPIDER-MAN: INTO THE SPIDER-VERSE... The first INCREDIBLES shared a year with... SPIDER-MAN 2 and HELLBOY... Just SPIDER-MAN 2 and HELLBOY... Anything else? I might be misremembering.

Anyways, much like the first one, the superhero stuff is the backdrop to what is a family story. This time, it's a bit of role reversal. Bob is the stay at home dad while Elastigirl gets to do the fun stuff, with a much different context... but a lot of that is pretty darn good! Bob isn't some hapless Mr. Mom, he actually commits to doing better for his kids, righting his wrongs, and going a bit insane in the process while his youngest reveals that he has crazy-amazing powers that only Syndrome saw in the first movie. It's also strangely progressive in a way, considering that the world of THE INCREDIBLES is an alternate early 1960s... The dad being stay at home and the mom doing the hard work, an unthinkable concept in the *real life* early 1960s, pre-Women's Liberation America, that's for sure! The first one also poked at that, too: "Leave the saving of the world to men? I don't think so!" Both of these INCREDIBLES films bask themselves in this midcentury-modern period and aesthetic, but also have people of marginalized groups getting to do the cool stuff, too. It's fun what you can do with alternate histories, and create pasts that are more progressive than they actually were.

As for the main Elastigirl plot and Evelyn Deavor's elaborate plan to make the public fully turn against superheroes for good? I think it works really well! It's a 180 from taking on a powerful bad guy like Syndrome, and instead it's a more on-the-ground, sneaky, pull-the-strings threat. Almost like a little political thriller amidst this big PG-rated superhero adventure for family audiences. (Though Brad Bird writes/directs as he please, he wasn't making "kids' films" with either of these movies.) Superheroes being used to destroy themselves, the film kind of asking - amidst the explosive superhero craze of the 2010s - if superheroes are even necessary for a functioning society? Not a new question, but I like how this film presents it just the same. The whole dependency on powerful beings aspect, like the fictional Screenslaver rambles in his monologue.

The Screenslaver rant is not too far removed from Bird's question in his much-maligned TOMORROWLAND, a film that actually strikes hard in a post-MAGA era. TOMORROWLAND, a wildly misinterpreted film to begin with, posited that real change and making the world a better place starts with individuals getting up and realizing what kind of power they have. Online, I see that people expect **others** to make things right, and some who even outright refuse to do the bare minimum. Like voting. As if our sitting President has a magic wand and can make all the bad stuff go away, ditto many other prominent figures... They'll sneer "stop telling me to vote", when it's the simplest thing one can do to prevent the party that's succumbed to full-on draconian policy and open hatred from completely taking over, but one can and should go beyond that if they want to fight fascism and the ills of the system... and in turn help make the world better. It took over 70 years of hard work to get to where we are now - from protests to movements to candidates who brought about change, and it's going to continue to be hard work. You don't do it by sitting there yelling "do something!" or threatening to opt out of your one simple civic duties that very much matters. Here, Bird uses that same idea of relying on others and being dependent, but it's in service of a villain's personal vendetta against superheroes and an understandable want to make society less dependent on a band-aid solution. She even tries to use people watching TV as an "example" of people being dependent, as if she's some bitter boomer whining about smartphones on a facebook post.

I guess the only problem is, the movie doesn't quite end with a strong case against Evelyn's very real points... Other than the altruism of the characters and them doing the right thing during its rather rushed and zippily-paced third act. A little tightening on that, I think, would've helped improve the picture a bit. I guess, when you're a big tentpole animated blockbuster superhero picture being made for a massive conglomerate that's trying to appeal to a wide audience, you can only go so far with that. A lot of the Marvel Cinematic Universe offerings, particularly CAPTAIN AMERICA: CIVIL WAR and THE FALCON AND THE WINTER SOLDIER, suffer from a similar problem. In that they chip at a meaty political theme, but then wrap things up with an action-packed climactic battle, they have a clear-cut villain that has to be stopped, and they kind of don't really make a case. Why do the Supers get legalized at the end of INCREDIBLES 2? For merely saving the city from a cataclysmic event, like they did at the end of the first movie and at the beginning of this one? Does the society seen in the world of THE INCREDIBLES go back to being dependent and complacent? Do they think about what the Screenslaver said? It's so quick, they're in the courtroom, they're legalized, cute and fun epilogue, end of movie... It's a bit weird. Like, what does the society do to work with supers and the government to make things better going forward?

That all being said, the villain's plans ultimately make sense to me. I like the idea of a grieving person who uses her wealth and influence to end what she feels is the problem - superheroes, and how that's a threat to our super-powered main characters. I just think it would've really, really landed if it went further and the supers made a case as to why Evelyn is ultimately wrong in her execution of some of her not-unfounded grievances. Or at least presented Evelyn with everything she could've done to make society less dependent on Supers without conspiring to get them outlawed, and even getting people killed in the process to make the world turn their backs on the Supers once more.

Even then, it's all executed so well. Bird had already directed THE IRON GIANT, and two all-CG pictures and two live-action biggies before this, so this was a cakewalk for him. With a 13 1/2-year difference in technology, he and his crew were able to really go all out here. Cityscapes that are gargantuan in comparison to the first film's Municiberg setting, lots of flying through and around buildings, smoother animation on the human characters, etc. The art direction, just. Perfect. The color scheme and everything, it all hits just right. Lots of fantastic retro graphic design everywhere, eye-catching! Michael Giacchino knocks it out again with the score, and we even got little theme jingles for the Supers themselves. I think it's just so well-done, I don't really get why it's often looked down upon online, nor why it has been somewhat forgotten outside of the internet? Maybe it's just because stuff is always coming out, from every pore? And that fewer and fewer things stick now? I don't know.

As for a third INCREDIBLES... It's inevitable, with or without Brad Bird. So far we got those Pixar Popcorn shorts, but that's about it. He's off at Skydance with former Pixar head John Lasseter (which... is disappointing to me on a number of levels, following Lasseter's misdeeds), it's possible he comes back to Pixar in the future to make a third one... Or they go ahead with a third one that he executive produces and signs off on. Honestly, I wouldn't be surprised if there ends up being a Disney+ series instead. I love those characters and that world, but will only say yes to an INCREDIBLES threequel if they do. In other words, I'm not clamoring for one, but if it comes around anytime soon? Yeah, sign me up.

First: No, we will not be uploading any videos ourselves, copyright bots would flag nearly everything if we even attempted to try.

Second: We provide the playlists as a means to try and help people find the artists and songs we share and many can be found officially or unofficially online.

Third: Years of deep diving into the Japanese music scene and recommendations from others.

Fourth: You can usually find us at our home convention of Animazement, but we will always share on our social media pages which events we will be hosting Awesomely Bad at.

Now for the much long involved answer to all of this:

Not much to add to the first point, but copyright strikes on songs are a nuisance to deal with and Japanese entertainment companies are very big on their bots flagging their content when it appears in videos on places like Youtube.

Luckily a lot of labels have been doing better about making their artists' music and even music videos available for streaming online, Sony Music Japan no longer geolocking content a few years ago made a lot of videos available in high quality uploads on youtube. Some suggestions that may help you find certain videos may involve using an online translator and searching for the artists or the song title by its Japanese name. Another helpful thing for finding Japanese music videos is to include “PV” in the search. “PV” is short for “Promotional Video” and is the moniker used in Japan for music videos. Unfortunately this doesn’t mean that every music label has made their artists available and some older music labels, like EMI Japan, got absorbed into another company leaving a lot of older videos in possible rights limbo. Most older official uploads from before 2013 may only be available in lower quality uploads. Also plenty of music artists end up switching to a different music label over their careers as well. This is why you can’t find good uploads of most of the popular Kishidan or DJ Ozma’s videos we show officially online.Plenty of other videos have been uploaded by fans as well, but the video quality of these uploads varies a lot and more than not, the videos are usually poorly encoded video files that aren’t usable for the show. Other times you will find videos in decent quality, but they’ll also be hard encoded with karaoke style subtitles in a variety of languages on the video; this is also unusable for the show.

Believe it or not, there’s a lot more to Awesomely Bad than just downloading videos online and putting them on a screen for you all to enjoy. We also strive to try and find the best quality version of videos to show. Trust us, you would not enjoy 240p potato quality video blown up onto an HD Projector screen. This has led to your Awesomely Bad hosts over the years to acquire official home video releases of various music videos, usually issued on DVD with a CD single or put together with other music videos on DVD. These also can range in price from $20 to $60 before import shipping costs to obtain. And the older the release, the harder it can be to get ahold of, leading to having to use third party service to help obtain auctions or purchases on Japan only markets like Yahoo Auctions Japan. Lastly, we do get asked about presenting at various conventions, especially ones we presented at in the past, if we’ll be at them or come back to. Believe us, we had fun in the past at events like Dragoncon, Sakuracon, and Katsucon; but traveling to so many events throughout the year on your own dime can get pretty expensive and at most we get a discounted or free badge for our work hosting an event. Here's the whole avatar design of my OC btw. Since I might one day be making a v-tuber model with similar features (albeit with redesigned clothes, and a few tweaks here and there).

A bit of history, yes, this was originally my Gaiaonline avatar. Since that's where I'd spend the majority of my teenage years. Especially as strict parental control around internet usage when I was growing up made traditional online messaging and hangouts with irl friends near impossible. And I was able to bypass a lot of parental monitoring with the site's (now-defunct) in-game chat features. Because just like other MMOs, when you log out, your chat log gets deleted.

To give Gaia some context, it was basically Fortnite for millennials back in the early 2000's. Complete with an entire free MMORPG (like a really basic FF14 in terms of combat), flash minigames, marketplaces for character customization, personal blog features (prior to Tumblr), hangout forums for all kinds of hobbies and discussions (prior to Reddit), and even a virtual town that would hold seasonal events (trick or treats, Easter egg hunts, etc.). Everyone also had their own in-game house with an actual virtual zip code that you could personalize and invite people over to.

It was simple compared to game hangout spaces we have today, in part because it was free, but at the time it felt like one of the only forms of personal freedom that was available to my teenage self. Especially when you were like me, and had parents monitoring every breath you took. In a household as strict as mine, where individuality and personal expression was a sin, it gave me an escape to be somewhere else. During a time where I was essentially locked to either my bedroom, school, or forced extracurriculars.

Because people with my kind of home life in that era, essentially had to be teenagers in secret. Having things like dates online, because relationships weren't allowed (usually on both sides), even if there was nothing odd about us. And every message you sent via either IM or SMS using traditional means could be read by parents or school staff. So the only way to hang out and just talk to people, including classmates, even if it was about the most mundane sfw things, was in a game space like this. It's actually really abusive and dystopian in hindsight, but it's a big part of how I even kept enough sanity to make it to adulthood. It was a loophole that give me the strength to hold out long enough to graduate and turn 18. To let me be something other than just...trapped and alone.

(Yes, Dot Hack as an anime franchise was extremely relatable during this time, especially the "offline" life portions. The kids in that series weren't just MMO addicts like most casual anime viewers think. If you read the books, they were literally micro-chipped and video monitored 24/7 by parents and the government until adulthood, so online spaces like "The World" were literally the only escapes they had).

Alas, now that Flash is discontinued, most of Gaia is defunct as well. The website remains, but most of the features I used to log in daily for either no longer exist or are obsolete. And the few that do are now rather different. So it unsurprisingly has a fraction of the user base it once started held. And since the email I used in the past to create my avatar is also long gone, alas so is my account and all the years I spent there.

However, I did still keep a couple of avatar screenshots as keepsakes. Since I originally used them for my old YouTube channel over 10 years ago. In part because I have zero methods of creating digital art (though I'd love to someday), and second because my avatar was actually kind of special? Not only it was incredibly rare due to the game having limited-time items with unlock conditions, but my OC also came to represent a lot of things about me personally. When you live your entire childhood as a fictional avatar, it's hard not to become attached, I suppose.

Case-in-point, immediately noticeable, but my character isn't exactly human. Unlike Final Fantasy 14, people only have access to starting out as humans in Gaia. But through either events or rare items, you can change yourself to something else. Vampires, Elves, Zombies, Fae, Centaurs, and a host of other things. The Padmavati Naga, which is what I am, was a rare form that was only released for a month. And even then, most people didn't take the anthropomorphic style with it that I did - opting instead for either half-snake or full garuda forms. (Eventually the item would get re-released years later as the website declined, but almost nobody played anymore).

Second major point is the "tattoos", which were also a rare weapon. Or rather, weapons. Notice how in some shots portions of the tattoo vanishes? That's because it morphs into the weapons themselves. I was disappointed to see that I only saved two screenshots of the item being activated, but in addition to the bow and lance pictured above, I distinctly also remember there being daggers, a sword, and a scythe. The weapon also allowed you to eventually take on a cloaked grim reaper form, or even fully transform into a Soulsborne-esque demon (eldritch gore included).

All of this is a major factor behind my au-ra design in Final Fantasy 14. I was surprised at how many parallels I could make right out of the gate. And while omni-classing is something I'm doing for LP purposes, it also draws similarities from my old Gaia avatar as well.

It's sad that I can't really get my account back, but I also know I wouldn't really use the website in the form it's in today. Especially not with full, unrestricted access to regular internet features. Nonetheless, it was a major part of my teenage years, and a much-needed sanctuary of sorts.

I still keep that OC close to my heart, and to this day enjoy bringing them to life in new spaces.
