so I've been having a little bit of a linguistics hyperfixation lately, and I decided to educate myself a little on the several languages of India - more particularly, their history and how they came to be the languages we recognise today, because I'm a bit of a history nerd. there was also this one insta reel living rent-free in my brain about how both the languages urdu and hindi came from meerut apparently and wasn't endemic to pakistan or something??? which is obviously a bunch of hogwash how can a language just be born in a city but whatever it bothered me enough to learn about it.

now i'm not a linguist so take this with a grain of salt but it turns out. hindi and urdu used to be the exact same language.

"but what about the script? the two languages look completely different - hindi is written in devanagari, and urdu in modified persian!"

there are many languages in the world that do not have their own script - this is especially true historically. that's why virtually all of the western european languages share a script - roman - because when the empire collapsed and new kingdoms began to take its place, they found that they didn't have to invent an entirely new script for administration - they could just take rome's. this is a vast oversimplification, but you get my meaning.

our language did not have this problem. if you were a person living in early 18th century india, you could write the vernacular used in the north of the country (it's collected a lot of names - hindu, urdu, hindustani, rekhta, hindavi, khariboli, etc.) in Kaithi, Devanagari OR Persian; granted you knew how to write, of course. this is what kaithi looks like:

if you're at all familiar with hindi/urdu, then you must also know what devanagari and nastaʿlīq looks like, so i'm not including them here.

all of these scripts would have been used at different times by different people in order to do different things - hindustani written in nastaʿlīq (which would later become urdu) would have been used for admin work by local lords and the like; kaithi was used by the kayasthas, a caste of scribes and accountants, and devanagari was popularly used by brahmins to write down religious scriptures.

over time, however, as colonial influence expanded and the british began to teach themselves the language, communal sentiments - mostly hindu brahmins that despised the influence of the 'urdu' elite - began to spread. they made literature and taught the english a version of "hindi" that had many sanskrit words and had removed all arabo-persian ones. on the other hand, poets and writers that had once been formerly empowered by the patronage of the mughals began to feel disillusioned with how much power had been stolen from them - so, they began to make their "urdu" much more arabicised and persianised.

the british also began to allow the use of the devanagari script in courts. and then then later - through malicious ignorance - recognised hindi and urdu as separate languages in some acts relating to official employment and education. this, combined with cultural factors and the aforementioned communal sentiments, led to hindi and urdu becoming different languages in the popular imagination.

so yeah. the only reason they're two different languages now is because of divide-and-rule. thanks, britain!

Over 70 public & private medical colleges took part in AURA 2024, organized by the Army College of Medical Sciences (ACMS) Delhi Cantt.

The VIMS students outclassed their opponents & won medals in many events, much to the delight of the College management.

The VIMS students won 12 golds, 8 silver & 5 bronze medal in various sports & cultural events at Aura 2024.

Dr Sharmila Dudani Dean AMC, along with the Registrar ACMS Col. Dr AK Singh, felicitated the winners by giving them medals & certificates.

Dr Rajeev Tyagi, the Pro Chancellor and Official Representative of the Founder President of Venkateshwara Group, announced that Aniket Pant secured the first prize in the Solo dance category, and Disha and Aniket achieved second place in the couple's dance competition.

The VIMS team won first prize in Shiv Tandav. Niyati Tomar came second in solo song. Disha & Harison came second in duet singing in the 4-day cultural event.

VIMS, team Astitva, came third in fashion show, followed by team Abhinay, which came third in couple dance, while Aniket Pant came second in Hindi Creative writing.

While Riya Dutta came second in face painting, the VIMS team were runners up in football.

PM Modi kickstarts his Lok Sabha election Campaign from Meerut city

Bhartiya Janta Party’s Lok Sabha Election Campaign was kickstarted by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Sunday from Meerut city in Uttar Pradesh. For the 2014 and 2019 elections, PM Modi chose Meerut only to be the first city to start his election campaign.

PM Modi asserted that the upcoming elections aren’t targeted at choosing the next Prime Minister of India but a beginning of making ‘Viksit Bharat’. "Our government is getting ready for its third term,” he said.

“We are creating a roadmap for the next five years. We are working on the big decisions we need to make in the first 100 days of our next term. The momentum of development created in the last 10 years, will move ahead with more speed,” he added.

Attacking the Congress government for its ‘anti-national acts’ he also referred to Katchatheevu island in Tamil Nadu, off the coast of India. "This island is extremely important from the perspective of national security. When the country became independent, we had this island, and it was an integral part of India but 4-5 decades ago, Congress said that this Island was of no use and cut off a part of Maa Bharti and separated it from India."

Addressing the gathering in Meerut, PM Modi said, “I have a special relationship with Meerut. I had started my election campaign for the 2014 and 2019 (Lok Sabha) polls from Meerut only. And now, the first rally for the 2024 elections is also being organised in Meerut. The 2024 Lok Sabha elections is not an election to elect the government, but to make a 'Viksit Bharat.'

मेरठ के चर्चित कबाड़ी बाजार में फिर खुल गए 15 कोठे, हाईकोर्ट के आदेश पर खोले गए हैं कोठे- Chetna Manch

Meerut News : मेरठ। उत्तर प्रदेश के मेरठ शहर से एक बड़ी खबर आ रही है। खबर यह है कि तीन साल पहले बंद कराए गए मेरठ के कबाड़ी बाजार में वैश्याओं के 15 कोठे फिर से खोल दिए गए हैं। वैश्याओं के कोठों को हाईकोर्ट के आदेश पर मेरठ के सिटी मजिस्ट्रेट राहुल विश्वकर्मा के निर्देश पर इन कोठों को खोला गया है। कोठे खोले जाने पर कानून व्यवस्था की समस्या पैदा होने से बचने के लिए कबाड़ी बाजार में बड़ी संख्या में पुलिस बल तैनात किया गया है।

क्या है पूरा मामला

आपको बता दें कि UP के मेरठ  शहर में एक बहुत पुराने बाजार का नाम कबाड़ी बाजार है। इस बाजार की ऊपरी मंजिलों पर यहां अपना जिस्म बेचकर जीवन यापन करने वाली महिलाएं वैश्यावृत्ति का धंधा करती थीं। वर्ष-2019 में कोर्ट के एक आदेश पर कबाड़ी बाजार के 70 कोठे बंद करा दिए गए थे। इन सभी कोठों पर पुलिस प्रशासन ने अपना ताला लगा दिया था। 2019 से ही यह मामला अदालत में लंबित था। हाल ही में हाईकोर्ट ने बंद किए गए 70 कोठों में से 15 कोठे खोलने का आदेश पारित किया था
