Saw this opinion a couple times today (twitter thread about why the Baltics are independent countries and not just one Baltic megastate), and hadn't really noticed it before, so I'm curious how many of you might agree:
(I'm also curious how self-selecting my friend group and my mutual-in-laws group is on this topic, but we'll see.)

My theory is that JFK and Princess Diana were having an affair and they were both assassinated to prevent the union of the US and UK as a joined megastate under the thumb of a single dynasty

I’m so so so glad they changed my probation reporting to phone only. It’s literally an automatic voice system that walks you through the same damn questions and I just be in my underwear with chip crumbs on my chest like pressing numbers to confirm that yes my address is the same, yes girl my work location is the same, no I haven’t had any contact with officers(except for the ones who come by my job to get a bite to eat cause the restaurant is located next to this big megastation that host officers, emts and firefighters so this is common), and if I have any questions. After, I get my confirmation number and write that bih down and until next month…I’m smooth sailing.

the farringdon megastation drawing is in top 10 pieces of media i will ever create. i could have used more than a single colour to draw 18 platforms and 18 tracks that cross each other all the time. but i made the artistic choice not to.

EU should be ‘single megastate’, says former Italian prime minister
For the EU to have a future in a multicentric world dominated by big powers such as the US and China, “it should become a state”, Mr Draghi said. He added: “Let’s hope that those founding values that brought us together will hold us together. Today, the growth model has dissolved and we need to reinvent a way of growing, but to do this, we need to become a state.” No common foreign policy He was…

City of Clos Ein
Dry, scorching desert. Nothing but sand and rolling dunes for as far as the eye can see. This is what much of central Norphendra is like. Given the vast area of the continent, moisture from the oceans often fails to reach the interior regions, creating immense areas of desolation.
Aside from the occasional outpost, human settlement is minimal in the desert of Aspenia and South Aspenia, with the harsh conditions creating swaths of nothingness. But, if one were to become lost and wander in just the right direction, they may rejoice at the unexpected sight of high rises towering above the golden dust.
This city is Clos Ein. located in the center of what is now the Cazkanian puppet of South Aspenia, Clos Ein was founded centuries ago by nomads. The location of the city became an instant must-stop for desert travellers because of the massive oasis it would be constructed around. A large system of lakes provides an essential source of water for humans, as well as the lush greenery and vegetation.
The oasis became an important stop on many ancient routes that traversed the desert. This junction point brought many travellers, some of whom would decide to stay in the beautiful paradise.
Eventually the city would come under the control of the Aspenian Oligarchy, who would capitalize on the important location and turn the settlement into a pristine economic hub. The streets were constructed out of glossy white, gold and violet tile work, and the detailed characteristic architecture added to the beauty. The wealthiest members of the Aspenian caste system would gain spacious properties along the lake shores, with a backdrop of shimmering skyscrapers.
Life in Clos Ein was not picturesque for everyone though. Like all of Aspenia, it was subject to the strict family line-based caste system. The poorest inhabitants lived outside the city limits, beyond the protection of the high walls. They carried out the menial tasks of cleaning and repairs, jobs that were looked down upon by the wealthier families but were essential to their city's image. Such was the society of Aspenia, and most, of the lower class that is, knew any different.
On March 7th, 161 ACC (equivalent of 2009) Clos Ein was captured by Cazkanian forces, who had invaded Aspenia in the year before. With the city's capture, the Aspenian government agreed to peace talks and conceded to Cazkanian demands. Much of the southern portion of the country came under Cazkanian control, and became South Aspenia. Cazkania staged this as a liberation of the lowest classes, but this was merely a front as the megastate's true intentions were only to create a defensive barrier around itself.
Since the Cazkanian takeover, Clos Ein has suffered. International travel was halted, and the wealthy families fled north. Of those who remained, their assets were seized by the government and mismanaged, leading to corporate and economic collapse. The buildings have since deteriorated, and the city has decayed greatly.
Kirk Vetnane, an important character from my book Cozar was born in and grew up in Close Ein before the Cazkanian invasion.
Bonus: I got the name from a typo one of my professors made. He meant to write "Close in" but instead wrote "Clos ein". As soon as I read it, I knew I had to name something in my writing that.

The little interest movic shows in Fluna and Seleas is becoming insulting and irritating 😠😡
Really? They release the solos together with the duet? When the guys have had like twice as many CDs? And the next megaste for when? 😒  For God's sake, they haven't even released the Seleas outfits! I can just imagine the conversation:                                                                - Hey, we should release something from the girls soon, we promised the fans.   - Yeah, yeah, whatever.
They have no fucking idea of how great materials they work with.
I can't take it anymore 😤🤬

The Trump show (Foreign Policy) Former U.S. President Donald Trump pleaded not guilty in a New York court on Tuesday to 34 felony counts of falsifying business records related to hush money paid to three individuals—including adult film actress Stormy Daniels and Playboy model Karen McDougal—before the 2016 U.S. presidential election. Although Trump is the first U.S. president to face criminal charges, he is far from the only democratically elected world leader to do so. In the last 15 years alone, two French presidents, two South Korean presidents, and one Italian prime minister were found guilty of corruption. Former Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro currently faces five Supreme Court investigations, including one for allegedly inciting Brasília’s Jan. 8 attempted coup. And current Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has been under indictment since 2019 on corruption charges. That’s not even including indicted current and former leaders from Argentina, South Africa, Mexico, Japan, Pakistan, Peru, and Taiwan.
Political polarization is sorting colleges into red and blue schools (Washington Post) Florida’s public universities, unlike most others, require an SAT or ACT score for freshman admission. Republicans in the Sunshine State are seeking to purge diversity and equity programs from those schools, weaken tenure protections for professors and limit the teaching of concepts such as “critical race theory” and “radical gender theory.” By contrast, California’s public universities ignore the test scores and avow the importance of diversity. The Democratic-led state requires them to offer abortion medication through student health centers. Tenured faculty wield immense clout within the University of California. Gender studies is not under threat in the Golden State. With their competing visions, the two megastates spotlight an emerging red-blue divide in higher education: The culture wars are breaking public universities into polarized camps. If, as a result, more prospective students gravitate to what they perceive to be politically like-minded colleges, analysts say that could produce a vicious cycle of division. “It will further advance the polarization,” said David Strauss, a higher education consultant in Baltimore.
Train derailment near The Hague kills 1, injures several (AP) A passenger train slammed into a construction crane and derailed near The Hague in the early hours of Tuesday, morning sending two carriages into a field next to the tracks. One person died and 19 were hospitalized, Dutch emergency services said. Television images showed people using temporary bridges and ladders to cross a narrow drainage canal running alongside the rails to reach the stricken train in the darkness. The four-carriage passenger train was carrying about 50 passengers at the time of the crash.
France’s Macron to draft bill legalizing end-of-life options (AP) New legislation to be drafted this year will address end-of-life options, French President Emmanuel Macron said Monday, following the release of a report indicating that most French citizens support legalizing medically assisted suicide and euthanasia. Macron’s move follows a report released Sunday indicating that a large majority from among a panel composed of 184 randomly selected citizens support “active assistance in dying.”
Italian government seeks to penalize the use of English words (CNN) New legislation introduced by Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni’s Brothers of Italy party would fine Italians who use English or other foreign words in official communications up to €100,000 ($108,705). The legislation reportedly has the support of Meloni. The bill would require anyone who holds an office in public administration to have “written and oral knowledge and mastery of the Italian language,” and prohibits use of English in official documentation, including “acronyms and names” of job roles. And it doesn’t just affect Italy—foreign entities would have to have Italian language editions of all internal regulations and employment contracts as well. The legislation applies to all foreign languages, but specifically targets “Anglomania.” The draft of the bill says English “demeans and mortifies” the Italian language, especially in a post-Brexit world.
Finland joins NATO, in blow to Putin (AP/Foreign Policy) Finland became a member of NATO on Tuesday and takes its place among the ranks of the world’s biggest security alliance. Neighboring Russia has already warned that it will bolster its defenses near their joint border if NATO deploys any additional troops or equipment to what will be its 31st member country. Finland shares a 1,340-kilometer (832-mile) border with Russia, so its entry will more than double the size of NATO’s border with Russia. By adding Finland, the trans-Atlantic bloc expands the alliance’s F-35 stealth fighter program and becomes home to one of the world’s three major 5G infrastructure providers. (The other two are in Sweden and China.) Finland also has the largest artillery force in Western Europe, with more firepower than the militaries of Poland, Germany, Norway, and Sweden combined, according to a November 2022 report by the Wilson Center.
Fortifying Crimea (Washington Post) Crimea, the peninsula Russia annexed in 2014, is now one of the most fortified areas of the war zone. The Russian defenses have sprung up fast, with Moscow’s forces webbing the the area with an elaborate trench system ahead of an expected spring offensive by Ukraine. The BTM-3, a Soviet-era trenching machine, digs as fast as half a mile per hour, even when the ground is frozen. Russia also uses raw manpower. Online Russian job listings have sought construction workers to fit trenches in Crimea with wood and concrete, for pay of more than $90 a day—enviable wages.
Mother and baby reunited in Turkey nearly two months after earthquake (Reuters) A mother has been reunited with her baby in southern Turkey after a DNA test confirmed it was her daughter, almost two months after a devastating earthquake ripped through the region, the country’s family ministry said. The minister handed her over to her mother Yasemin Begdas at a hospital in the city of Adana 54 days after the disaster. The three-and-a-half-month old “miracle baby”, called Vetin, was pulled out of the rubble of a building in the province of Hatay more than five days after the Feb. 6 quake with no health problems. After initially being cared for at a hospital in Adana, the baby had been taken by the presidential plane to be cared for by authorities in Ankara. A DNA test revealed that Yasemin was her mother and the baby was flown back to Adana, where the reunion took place at the hospital treating her.
China seethes as US chip controls threaten tech ambitions (AP) Furious at U.S. efforts that cut off access to technology to make advanced computer chips, China’s leaders appear to be struggling to figure out how to retaliate without hurting their own ambitions in telecoms, artificial intelligence and other industries. President Xi Jinping’s government sees the chips that are used in everything from phones to kitchen appliances to fighter jets as crucial assets in its strategic rivalry with Washington and efforts to gain wealth and global influence. Chips are the center of a “technology war,” a Chinese scientist wrote in an official journal in February. China has its own chip foundries, but they supply only low-end processors used in autos and appliances. The U.S. government, starting under then-President Donald Trump, is cutting off access to a growing array of tools to make chips for computer servers, AI and other advanced applications. Xi, in unusually pointed language, accused Washington in March of trying to block China’s development with a campaign of “containment and suppression.” He called on the public to “dare to fight.”
Taiwan rejects China pressure ahead of House speaker meeting (AP) Taiwan remained defiant ahead of the island president’s expected meeting with the U.S. House speaker on Wednesday, after China threatened retaliation multiple times in the past week. Taiwan’s President Tsai Ing-wen has been visiting the island’s remaining diplomatic allies in Latin America, Belize and Guatemala. The most politically sensitive part of her trip will be the meeting with U.S. House Speaker Kevin McCarthy in Los Angeles while she transits on her way back home. The visit—while important for Taiwan in demonstrating its overseas support—is fraught for both Taiwan and the U.S. because China views Taiwan as its territory and treats any dealings between U.S. and Taiwanese officials as a challenge to its sovereignty. Last week, and again on Monday, China threatened with countermeasures if Tsai met with McCarthy. The Chinese Consulate in Los Angeles issued a statement Monday saying it opposed “any form of contact” between Taiwan authorities and the U.S.
China’s tough week (Foreign Policy) China is having a tough week. The Philippine government on Monday identified four new military camps, some of which are across the sea from Taiwan, where American forces can be stationed. China was staunchly opposed to this setup, but clearly, their warnings were not heeded. Marcos said the move would boost the Philippines' coastal defense, but it also helps Biden’s mission to strengthen military alliances in the Indo-Pacific to better counter China and prepare for any future confrontation over Taiwan. The new sites include a Philippine navy base in Santa Ana and an international airport in Lal-lo, both in northern Cagayan province, which China worries will provide U.S. forces with a staging ground close to southern China and Taiwan. China and multiple other countries, including the Philippines, Vietnam, Malaysia, Brunei, and Taiwan, have been disputing access to the South China Sea, and tensions have been escalating as of late. The two other military areas are in northern Isabela province and a navy camp on Balabac island in the western province of Palawan, which faces the South China Sea.
Skirmishes In Syria (Guardian) It was reported that five Syrian soldiers were wounded in the latest Israeli airstrike on Syria, which took place early on Sunday, and Iran said two Revolutionary Guards officers had died in earlier attacks by Israel as well. The strike near the western city of Homs was Israel’s third in recent days after the capital, Damascus, was targeted on Thursday and Friday. Israel has been launching airstrikes on Syria regularly through its 12-year civil war, often targeting Iranian-backed forces, Lebanese Hezbollah fighters, and Syrian army positions. Israel doesn’t usually comment on the strikes it carries out on Syria, but it has repeatedly said it will not allow Iran to extend further into the country.
Israel holding over 1,000 without charge, most since 2003 (AP) Israel is holding over 1,000 Palestinian detainees without charge or trial, the highest number since 2003, an Israeli human rights group said Tuesday. Israel says the controversial tactic, known as administrative detention, helps authorities thwart attacks and hold dangerous militants without divulging incriminating material for security reasons. Palestinians and rights groups say the system is widely abused and denies due process, with the secret nature of the evidence making it impossible for administrative detainees or their lawyers to mount a defense. HaMoked, an Israeli rights group that regularly gathers figures from prison authorities, said that as of April, there were 1,016 detainees held in administrative detention. Nearly all of them are Palestinians detained under military law, as administrative detention is very rarely used against Jews. Four Israeli Jews are currently being held without charge.

HELEMAAL WAAR.!!
