Australia is in the news again
Farzam Mehrabi was found guilty of drugging and raping women. (ABC News: David Weber)
In short:
Perth dentist Farzam Mehrabi has been found guilty of drugging and raping several women he met on dating apps.
He was found guilty of stupefying and raping three women, raping two further women and stupefying another.
Mehrabi will be sentenced on December 17.
A jury has found a Perth dentist guilty of drugging and raping women he met through dating apps.
The WA District Court had heard that Farzam Mehrabi put drugs into his victims' drinks without their knowledge before sexually assaulting them.
Mehrabi's trial started in early August, with the dentist facing 22 charges, including sexual penetration without consent, stupefying in order to commit an indictable offence, and impeding someone's normal breathing.
The offences occurred in February and March in 2022.
He was found guilty of stupefying and raping three women, raping two further women and stupefying another.
Mehrabi was captured on CCTV in bars, putting drugs into the drinks of women he was dating.
One of those women, who had found him on Tinder, said she experienced blurred vision after drinking a martini, and remembered she "didn't really like the taste".
She was later raped at Mehrabi's home, where he choked her without her consent.

Another victim told the court Mehrabi told her "he had the best MDMA" and she had some with him.
But she said that on another occasion she had been drinking with Mehrabi in his garden before she started seeing in "fours" and vomited.
She said she then blacked out and could not remember anything until she woke in his bedroom the next day, and later discovered injuries on her body.
She went to police and they recorded a phone call with Mehrabi, who claimed they had got drunk before having consensual sex outside.
Media report caused victim to come forward
Another victim came forward after seeing some media coverage saying "Perth dentist accused of spiking drinks".
The urine sample of a woman who was not assaulted, but who had her drink spiked, showed MDMA, methylone and methylamphetamine.
The court had been told that in some cases, the women had engaged in consensual drug use and sex with Mehrabi, who often talked about drug use, particularly MDMA.

Farzam Mehrabi was found guilty of 21 of 22 charges in the District Court of WA on Wednesday. (ABC News: David Weber)
His defence was that none of the sex was without consent, and he liked to be dominant with his partners.
The victims were aged in their late teens and early 20s, and the 34-year-old denied he was trying to deceive anyone by lowering his age on dating apps and targeting younger women.
Mehrabi was found guilty of 21 of the 22 charges the jury was considering, and found not guilty of one of the stupefying charges.
He had already pleaded guilty to two charges of supplying a prohibited drug and one charge of offering to sell or supply a prohibited drug.
Two of the women had not been assaulted, but told the court they had been drugged by Mehrabi.

Mehrabi was remanded in custody and will be sentenced on December 17.
Judge Troy Sweeney approved the release of footage showing Mehrabi spiking drinks to the media because she said there was an educational aspect for the public.

Toronto trying to ban gas-burning Uber and Lyft cars by 2031 A new City report proposes that all Ubers, Lyfts, taxis, and other "vehicles-for-hire" in Toronto should be zero-emissions by 2031. The report is set to be considered by City Hall on Sept. 21, and recommends that all vehicles-for-fire must be zero-emission vehicles by Jan. 1, 2031, with some outlined exceptions, including stretch limousines and accessible vehicles. The proposal also permits plug-in hybrid electric vehicles to operate as vehicles-for-hire for an additional two years until Dec. 31, 2032. "The proposed approach was developed in response to feedback from industry and public stakeholders as well as consideration of the equity impacts of the net zero by 2030 requirement, as a substantial proportion of the vehicle-for-hire industry consists of lower-income individuals and equity-seeking groups," the report reads. To support the goal, staff are seeking City Council approval to reduce licensing fees temporarily via grants for taxicab and limousine owners of zero-emission vehicles and to private transportation companies for trips taken in a zero-emission vehicle. Toronto is just the latest North American city to propose the zero-emissions initiative. In August, New York City Mayor Eric Adams announced newly proposed rules for "Green Rides," which requires the transition of the city's rideshare fleet to either zero-emission vehicles or wheelchair-accessible vehicles by 2030. Uber's own sustainability strategy commits to becoming a zero-emission mobility platform by 2030 in Canada, Europe, and the U.S., and globally by 2040.  https://www.blogto.com/city/2023/09/toronto-ban-gas-burning-uber-lyft-cars-2031/

TEHRAN—Almost immediately after Iranian authorities announced that President Ebrahim Raisi had died on May 19, black mourning flags were raised across Tehran. Residents in the capital awoke the following day to giant banners on most street corners depicting the late leader with poems and flattering language about him.
Campaign posters are expected to follow soon: According to Iran’s constitution, a new president must be chosen within 50 days of a leader’s death. The vote to elect Raisi’s successor is scheduled for June 28. On Sunday, Interior Minister Ahmad Vahidi officially opened the presidential election season, ordering Iran’s provinces and cities to set up headquarters and committees to run elections within three days. Candidates can register between May 30 and June 3, the country’s Election Headquarters announced.
All candidates must be vetted by the Guardian Council, a 12-member clerical government body, before a two-week campaigning period starts on June 12. The new president will serve a full four-year term after his inauguration.
Saeed Jalili, a hard-liner and Iran’s former chief nuclear negotiator, is considered one of the contenders for the presidency, as is the current acting president, Mohammad Mokhber, who is close to Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei. Former hard-liner President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad told supporters outside his Tehran home that he would consider running. Ali Larijani, the comparatively moderate former speaker of parliament, may also stand in the polls.
The May 19 helicopter crash that killed Raisi also claimed the lives of Foreign Minister Hossein Amir-Abdollahian and six others and triggered five days of mourning—national holidays that culminated in the 63-year-old president’s burial last Thursday at the Imam Reza Shrine in Mashhad, Iran’s holiest site. The funeral drew around 3 million people, according to the city’s mayor. Many traveled from afar by train after a television broadcast advertised free accommodation at hotels and guesthouses. Hamas chief Ismail Haniyeh, who is based in Qatar, visited Tehran on Wednesday for one of Raisi’s funeral processions.
Thousands more gathered at the Shah Abdol-Azim shrine in Rey, a suburb of Tehran, to attend Amir-Abdollahian’s funeral. Chants of “death to Israel, death to America” echoed through the crowds at the shrine, where people waved Iranian, Palestinian, Hezbollah, and Hamas flags. Mourners squeezed tightly into the shrine’s courtyard where, teary-eyed and praying, they threw fresh flowers onto Amir-Abdollahian’s coffin as it arrived for its final rest.
“We’re bidding farewell,” 45-year-old Tahere Mehrabi said, her hands held up in prayer. “The nation is grieving, but we’re hoping for a bright future. That’s also why I’m heading to the polls,” she added.
Islamic scholar Hamid Rajeri, 45, confirmed his intention to vote but added with disgust that he had also seen a different side of Iran “while the whole country was grieving,” referring to social media posts celebrating Raisi’s death. “These martyrs were popular figures and our people are devastated. Those celebrating are hooligans,” he said.
Raisi’s death has exposed further fissures in Iranian society. While millions grieved, others used the unexpected national holiday for an impromptu vacation, traveling to northern Iran’s mountains. In Tehran, groups of students who lacked the funds for trips gathered in coffee shops and parks, playing card games and drinking hot black tea from thermoses.
“Why should we be sad? We know him as the ‘Butcher of Tehran,’” said an 18-year-old engineering student, her bright pink hair uncovered and her ears decked with piercings. She spoke on the condition of anonymity, fearing identification by the government. In the 1980s, Raisi oversaw mass executions of political prisoners, she added.
Under his leadership in 2022, Iran cracked down hard on anti-government protests following the death of 22-year-old Mahsa Amini, who was detained by Iran’s morality police for wearing “improper” clothing and later died in the hospital. “We want justice and political change, but the system is not changing. It’s frustrating,” the student said, sitting on the grass with six of her classmates. When asked if she would vote next month, she shook her head. “Not me, not my friends.”
Raisi, known for his close alignment with the 85-year-old Khamenei, was widely regarded by experts as his potential successor. Raisi assumed office in 2021 after the Guardian Council disqualified several moderate and reformist opponents in that year’s presidential election, triggering record-low voter turnout of 48.8 percent. Experts say that the upcoming election is unlikely to bring significant changes to Iran’s ruling system. Just 41 percent of eligible voters participated in March’s parliamentary election.
“Back in 2021, the supreme leader wanted a true loyalist in power, a supporter of the deep state and the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps,” said Hamidreza Azizi, an expert on Iranian foreign policy and visiting fellow at the German Institute for International and Security Affairs. “Nothing substantial has changed on that front. The government is seeking a safe transition of supreme leaders, so it is unlikely that they will allow outsiders to come in and jeopardize this interest.” Given Khamenei’s age, many are speculating about his health and potential succession.
Azizi does not expect significant changes in voter turnout, either. “Even if moderate and reformist candidates are qualified in the upcoming elections—which isn’t guaranteed—I don’t think people will show up in big numbers,” he said. Dislike of the government is also widespread among Iranians, Azizi said. The urban middle class has expressed this sentiment on social media and via social disobedience, such as women’s refusal to wear the mandatory headscarf. Dissatisfaction has grown in smaller, lower-income towns, too, where residents have launched sporadic protests against the government over economic struggles.
“The reality is that all Iranians suffer from economic, social, and political restrictions, and there is no immediate solution in sight—especially as long as foreign sanctions and systemic corruption exist,” Azizi added.
However, some experts argue that the upcoming snap election presents an opportunity for change in Iran. “Last time, the Guardian Council disqualified several people, but it appears they will have a more inclusive approach this time, mostly due to the low voter turnout during the 2021 polls and the criticism the council faced,” explained Afifeh Abedi, a reformist parliamentary candidate for the Tehran constituency who ran in Iran’s legislative elections this spring.
With official campaigns set to start on June 12, Abedi hopes that a more inclusive approach to elections and candidate qualification will bring Iranians to the polls—especially in the capital, where voter participation has been lower than in other provinces.
As the mourning period and funerals concluded last Friday, Tehran returned to normalcy, save for the Raisi banners and black flags. Shops were open, and restaurants were packed. Over the weekend, students strolled down the city center’s Enghelab Street, rummaging through bookstores and ordering saffron ice cream floats with carrot juice. In the evenings, dozens of people gathered on a hilltop dubbed the “roof of Tehran” to watch the sun set over the city. Children flew kites, young couples sat listening to music, and families poured cups of tea.
“Between sanctions, politics, and the economy, life isn’t easy here,” a 20-year-old woman said as she sat with her friends after trekking up the hill, staring into the city lights. She, too, spoke on the condition of anonymity to protect her safety. “Many young people want to leave, but after all, this is our country. This is our culture. It’s home—and regardless of the circumstances, leaving home is not easy.”

LEISURE SUIT LAZARUS II
Coriolis: Hikayat Sammrddhi Cheeta continues with Ramshad, Naazumeh & Alrazzi investigating the death of Dr. Humina Ghabi, the founder of Industrial Algebra (IA) on Lubau. While remotely commissioned via a tabula call by Abdul Nasr, they were accompanied by Noor, Nasr's niece.
After finding the single super-phylactery crystal discarded on the floor of the vault of IA's research facility, the team retires to the guest quarters for dinner & rest while Sharif Merrezad returns to his office, still detained pending the investigation of Dr. Ghabi's murder.
While Ramshad looks for listening devices, they decide at dinner to take the early monorail in the morning to nearby city of Mehrabi to investigate the huge broadcast tower being built from curious orders coming out of IA.
During their 30 minute commute the next morning, Noor who slept on the train has nightmares. She screams, "They're coming!" just before weapons fire raze the monorail from two flying skiffs manned by armed desert bandits. They jump aboard through the blasted windows. The firefight leaves many bandits dead downed, their leader captured, skiffs retreating & Naazumeh severely injured.
Bayit is the bandit leader's name. She stole the other five super-phylacteries earlier, dead-dropped them in Mehrabi but did not murder Dr. Ghabi. She took the job via JobDjinn. But when she missed one, whoever commissioned the job contacted her to retrieve the sixth module from the team on the monorail, threatening to harm to Bayit's children if she refused.
Alrazzi: “Noor. You knew of the attack in your sleep before it happened.” Noor: “Please don’t tell my uncle.”
At the Mehrabi monorail stop, the team hands over fallen bandits to local Legion patrol but bring Bayit with them. Suddenly Abdul Nasr calls. He is in Mehrabi at Excelsior Hotel on vacation & wants to meet them, unaware of the mission that he had sent the team on! Discussing over coffee, it becomes clear that Abdul Nasr did NOT send them to Lubau, surprising even Noor.
Alrazzi believes that their mission here, the murder, the messages, the surveillance, the phylactery theft, the broadcast tower... all the things that makes no sense are all promulgated by the military artificial intelligence Lazarus II, that Dr. Ghabi was working on for the Legion.
At the tower base, a private security force has been waiting & greets them. They are taken to the tops levels where Lazarus II awaits. Upon achieving sapience it, it tells them that it is using its resources & abilities to survive long enough to attempt to become the first Machine Icon of the Third Horizon.
Alrazzi in act of defiance to his family adherence to Zenithian castes agrees to insert the sixth phylactery into the phylactery rack. Let a new Machine Icon throw a wrench in the works. The entire crystal room glows brightly. The broadcast tower charges with energy. Then everything dies. All six super-phylacteries are empty of data.
Was Lazarus II successful?
The guards stand down & abandon the tower peacefully. Ultimately, the team sets Bayit free & gives all their investigation notes to Legion General Yahudd. They and Noor return to Coriolis. The Cheetah would not be repaired by Nasr, but they managed to cover 50% of the repair bills by selling the empty high-tech phylactery modules Alrazzi filched from the tower to Coriolis fixers.
They all wait for Omar & Kariim to return to tell them this incredible story.
THE END... FOR NOW

Ulduz sayaraq gözləmişəm hər gecə yarı, Gec gəlmədədir yar yenə, olmuş gecə yarı (Yıldız sayarak beklemişim her gece yarı Geç gelmektedir yar yine olmuş gece yarı)
(Göz yaşları her yerden akarsa, beni yener, Deryaya bakar, bellidir, çayların akarı)
Əzbəs məni yarpaq kimi hicranla saraldıb, Baxsan üzünə, sanki qızılgüldü, qızardı. (Ezmez beni yaprak gibi hicranla sarartıp Baksan yüzüne, sanki kızıl güldü, kızardı)
Mehrabi-şəfəqdə özümü səcdədə gördüm, Qan içrə qəmim yox, üzüm olsun sənə sarı. (Şafak vaktinde kendimi secdede gördüm Kan içinde gamım yok, yüzüm olsun sana sarı)
Eşqi var idi Şəhriyarın güllü, çiçəkli, Əfsus, qara yel əsdi, xəzan oldu baharı. (Aşkı vardı Şehriyarın güllü, çiçekli Ah ne yazık ki, kara yel esti, hazan oldu baharı)

Oldum qara gün ayrılalı, ol sarı teldən, Bunca qara günlərdir edən rəngimi sarı.
Göz yaşları hər yerdən axarsa, məni tuşlar, Dəryaya tərəf bəllidi çayların axarı.
Əz bəs məni yarpaq kimi, hicrində saraldıb, Baxsan üzünə, sanki qızıl güldü qızarı.
Mehrabi şəfəqdə özümü səcdədə gördüm, Qan içrə qəmim yox, üzüm olsun sənə sarı.
Eşqi var idi Şəhriyarın güllü çiçəkli, Əfsus qəza vurdu, xəzan oldu baharı.
