I just can't get behind it the original production of Spring Awakening. Nothing about it feels genuine, and the choreography they chose to do is fairly confusing and meaningless. Melchior is even more unlikable somehow, and Wendla, Ilse, Martha, and the rest of the girls are not as intriguing as they are in the Deaf West production. DWSA was able to use and expound upon the fact that children's voice often went unheard and more often were actively quieted. The use of sign language, deaf characters having their voice be a character, and the relationship that creates is something that, unironically, transcends language. It's something young people can relate to, whether they're deaf, HoH, or hearing. The relationships the characters form with each other are heightened by the use of sign language in an attempt to communicate with them in a way that they understand. And not to mention the fact that they made it so that you could read what the characters were saying when they weren't signing as an added form of accessibility. In this essay I will-
