Matteo heading up to the 11,503 ft peak of San Gorgonio Mountain in southern California June of 2005. South Fork Trail is the beginning of a 9 mile trek to the summit, 18 mile round trip. This was a training day for the 8000 Meter Challenge. In May this year he will be back to run the same trail, part of his photographic journal road trip "remembrance of things past" project. Stay tuned for more information about his journey into the past!

Some of the last images I took of North Park in San Diego, California, before moving back to Michigan. Twenty years in the making, they are regular 8mm film stills from early 2004. The film was digitized, and this year I created digital negatives @kirknewmanartschool @kalamazooinstituteofarts photography department with the help of @m_b_whalen. Printed on my all-time favorite David W. Lewis gelatin silver paper. I purchased the frames years ago in San Diego, and now I've found a purpose for them. Every day I will now look at them hanging on my wall. ~ Matteo

You just simmer down until the house has been saturated with smoky, spicy, chili scent bombs. I've discovered that there is such a nostalgic comfort that comes from smelling something as it's cooking. Food scents have always been huge triggers with me. When I smell chili cooking with notes of extra spicy jalepeno, it takes me back to camping And bbqing on the beaches of Guam with my family when I was 12. My Dad would make this hellfire addictive chili. I'm so grateful that my parents took us on family vacations every summer growing up. We usually went back to south Jersey to visit family but we did take an occasional excursion elsewhere. I loved being copilot, road Atlas in hand, to help guide my father, not that he didn't already know the way. Though GPS navigation can be very convenient, there is nothing like the feel and smell of a paper map! Just picking it up triggers a flood of memories. ~ Matteo
