Any predictions for Worlds?
My prediction for Worlds is that it's unpredictable. 😁 I assume that you wanna talk the men competition? (I can talk about all other disciplines as well, but that would take too long here)
I'd say there are 4 contenders for the Gold medal at Worlds Ilia, Shoma, Yuma and Adam.
Let's take a look at the Season 2023/2024 Best Scores:
1. Ilia Malinin (6 quads FS) - 314,66 (GPF23)
2. Yuma Kagiyama (3 quads FS) - 307,56 (4cc23)
3. Adam Siao Him Fa (4 quads FS) - 306,78 (GPFra23)
4. Shoma Uno (4 quads FS without all combos) - 297,34 (GPF23)
And the Personal Best Scores:
1. Ilia Malinin - 314,66 (GPF23)
2. Shoma Uno - 312,48 (Worlds 2022)
3. Yuma Kagiyama - 310,05 (Olympics 2022)
4. Adam Siao Him Fa - 306,78 (GPFra2023)
I think the SP will be key and who makes less mistakes. A mistake in the SP can cost the title. The free skate however will decide who will win.
Let's take a look at each of the 4:
First don't underestimate the current World champion! I know Shoma doesn't have the highest season scores and even his PB is behind Ilia's but Shoma has one thing that none of the others have, which is experience under pressure. Shoma is 26 years old and around in his 9th senior season, there is no one that can beat him on that. As Shoma's season best scores aren't as high imo he has the highest potential to improve his scores by miles. I think for the SP Shoma is quite save. Out of 4 SPs this season he hit 4 clean skates! For his free skate we have to take into consideration that so far this season he had no complete BV, he always missed one jumping pass bc he popped one of them. The q's have also been a problem this season yet he still was 2nd at GPF despite of it. Shoma's BV is 3rd highest if he's not going back to 5 quads, but his PCS will be the highest unless he makes serious mistakes. Also Shoma performs usually best when he's not the favorite. So never count him out! Shoma paces himself usually for the big competitions but Shoma seems to have new boots, so it's a bit of a gamble to say where his consistency might be.
I did this calculation after GPF23, where a realistic score for a clean free skate could be around 211+, which is higher than anyone's.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
As a big Shoma fan I ofc want Shoma to win a 3rd world title and I think that's also within the possibilties.
I think it's undeniable that Ilia has the highest BV and therefore the highest scoring possibilty, but I actually doubt that possible score will be much higher than what he got at the GPF. Ilia is also the one of the 4 with the lowest PCS. The SP is going quite well for him this season, but a 4A in the SP would be very risky and could also cost him dearly if missed. Of course a clean 6 quad free program will be hard to beat and the 4A seems to add PCS as well, but still his PCS hold him back a bit. Imo Ilia's PCS are still too high but that high TES give you high PCS is nothing new in skating and we have to be realistic that his PCS will only increase. Yet Ilia was again not very convincing at US Nats and it's reported that he's struggling with his new boots. Could also be that Ilia peaked too early to win...
Adam is quite similar case as Ilia with the PCS but his BV is not as high though Adam is also training a 4F and might include it into his program, what would upgrade his BV. Adam's SP has been a bit of a problem under pressure, yet also if he is clean he would place 4th after the SP if Yuma, Shoma and Ilia are clean. I think Adam's scores this season are quite maxed out judging wise. He never scored as high before and he got those scores with clean skates. I think that Adam may have peaked a bit too early in the season, his Euros performance was less than stellar and he never was in a position to win a World championship. We should not underestimate the difference in pressure. I actually think if everyone goes clean it would be Adam who is 4th.
Yuma has the lowest BV of the 4 contenders, but almost as high PCS as Shoma. His GOEs are probably the best out of the 4 contenders which makes up for less difficulty. You can see that if you compare Yuma's 3 quad 4cc free skate score with Ilia's 6 quad free skate score, that they are almost the same score despite Ilia's massive BV. With the high from the 4cc win Yuma definetly gained confidence yet without devaluing his win the mental game is quite different when you're not competing among the best. At JNats Yuma showed an unusual mistake in the SP I guess because of the pressure and at Worlds 2022 he also made very uncharistic mistakes under pressure. Yet the way he presented himself this season and condidering the judging at 4cc I would say Yuma is a favorite to win.
I don't want to make a final ranking what I think will happen because usually Worlds has very unpredictable results. I mean Junhwan Cha was not on the favorites list to win Worlds 2023 yet he was very close. I would not be surprised if the men event is a hot mess and someone totally under the radar lands on the podium.
Even if I ofc have my wishes all I really wish for is an exciting and fair competition. That's all. Another title for Shoma would be great but anything that happens now is a bonus and 3 world titles one after the other is pretty high expectation. Shoma is not underestimating his rivals nor do I, but you better should not underestimate Shoma as well. 😊

Who's Camden and why are you so obsessed with him?
Okay to understand this you need to take a step back and realize how random of a skater Camden is. So you may remember the 2022 US men's Olympic team: Nathan Chen, Jason Brown, and Vincent Zhou. Nathan of course wins the gold. Jason gets 6th overall. Vincent gets covid and can't compete. The US olympic team is chosen at nationals of that year. Here are the national scores:
Tumblr media
Okay so you may notice in the scoring at nationals that the #2 spot belongs to someone named Ilia. Ilia is a high schooler and is insanely good at tricks. He is known as the quad god and his parents were both Olympians... except this boy is a nervous WRECK. So US figure skating sent Jason instead since Jason had been at the 2014 Olympics and could handle the pressure. Also notice placements #1-5 are so much higher scoring than placements #6 and beyond.
So the Olympics comes and goes and it's time to send 3 people to Worlds. Now that it's no longer THE OLYMPICS they decide to give Ilia a chance. Its supposed to be Ilia, Nathan, and Vincent. Nathan apparently had an injury before the Olympics and so days before the event starts he drops out. Okay well Jason is SUPER consistent. He can handle it. Except Jason had planned a trip to Peru and drops out immediately. US figure skating had sent two different potential alternates in Camden and Jimmy (see scores above). It may be obvious, Camden scored WAY better. Except Camden is like America's most inconsistent skater. The fact he got 5th was insane. Still, US figure skating decides to take a chance on him.
Okay so now it's time for worlds. The short program happens and Camden does fine. Nothing spectacular but skates clean. Jason and Ilia are better of course. But then it comes time for the free skate. They go in order of lowest short program score to highest. Camden is in the middle. He was #5 in America so like,,, no one expects him to be competitive against the top skaters from their respective countries. But somehow Camden skates and it blows EVERYONE out of the water. It was insane to watch. I have never found a recording of it but I was going feral watching. Like he could be one of the very best in the world if he was a consistant skater.
So after this routine, no one catches up to Camden for a while. Camden ends up being #5 overall. Ilia (the nervous wreck high schooler who wasn't ready for the Olympics) falls so much on the ice he is practically rolling. Vincent got over his covid and gets bronze at worlds!!! But Camden actually ends up getting a "small" medal because he had the third best free skate at worlds, even if he was fifth overall.
So yeah!!! Camden is the US's most inconsistent skater but when he is on he is one of the best in the world and I am obsessed with him!

OLYMPIC GOLD MEDALIST SCOTT MOIR REFLECTS ON MINOR HOCKEY
GREW UP IN ILDERTON, PLAYING UNTIL HE WAS 15 YEARS OLD
November 22, 2022
Tumblr media
Scott Moir is an Olympic gold medallist, pairing with Tessa Virtue to create Canada’s most accomplished ice dancing partnership and the most decorated Olympic figure skaters in history. As part of the Special Olympics Canada Champions Network, he was a guest at the annual Limitless Gala fundraiser in Toronto last week.
Not many know that Moir started as a hockey player, growing up in Ilderton and playing with the Jets. We had the chance to catch up with him and reflect on his days in minor hockey playing in the OMHA and how he still has love for the game playing men’s league.
HOW DID YOU GET INTO HOCKEY?
Before I figure skated, I was a hockey player. Back then there was a ‘get your third child free’ kind of a deal, and I was the youngest of three boys, so my parents just kind of threw me in when I was three years old. I played with the older kids and couldn’t really keep up. We used to rotate as goalies, and nobody could raise the puck, so my uncle just told me to lay down and I fell asleep while I was in the net and they had to come wake me up. It wasn’t really a glorious start.
That was always my first love, hockey. I always played for the Jets in my home town. The arena was in my backyard. I played until I was 15 years old and I moved away from home.
WHAT ARE SOME OF THE SKILLS IN HOCKEY THAT HELPED YOU IN FIGURE SKATING?
Mostly aggression. Just being able to attack the ice and take my space. It helps me a lot when I’m on practice. I joke with the guys who never played hockey that they don’t know where everybody else is on the ice, where in hockey you have to. There were a lot of things. Just to be more forward on your blade helps with figure skating.
Tumblr media
WHY DID YOU WANT TO GET INVOLVED WITH SPECIAL OLYMPICS?
I really feel like I’m the lucky one to be involved in Special Olympics. It’s the purest sporting environment that I’ve ever been around. The sense of fair play, camaraderie, sportsmanship, I’ve never seen anything like it in any sport. I always feel like we’re the ones taking the most out of these events.
WHAT IS YOUR FAVOURITE MEMORY OF MINOR HOCKEY?
When I was in Novice we won the OMHA West, that’s the highest we would go at that time. I can still remember the feeling of being on the team and the championship game and winning it and being on the ice for the game winning goal. That’s probably the big memory, that run, even at that age, something about playoff hockey, it still feels special.
WHAT ARE SOME OF THE LIFE SKILLS YOU’VE LEARNED FROM HOCKEY?
I was always very lucky. I had Tessa as a teammate. I love team sports, I still play hockey. It’s all about being part of a team and serving a role. Sometimes you’re the star and sometimes you’re uplifting your teammates. That’s the part of team sports that I really love.

US, South Korea, and Canada Land on World Team Trophy Podium
South Korea’s first WTT podium in surprise silver
April 16, 2023
TOKYO, JAPAN – Team USA dominated to win gold at the World Team Trophy. Joined at the competition by the other top five countries – South Korea, Canada, Japan, and Italy. China was originally in the top six but declined the spot, which went to France. Team USA was led by Olympic medalists Aura Nosdod and Ashley Rodriguez, two placed first and second in both of the Women’s short and free events. Team USA ended up with 126 points overall.
“I’m thrilled with how everyone competed,” said Team Captain and reigning National Champion Alexander Carpenter, who was seventh in the short and fourth in the free. “We all did our jobs, and winning by such a large margin is fantastic. I’m so proud of everyone. This was a dream competition for us, I think, and a great way to end the season.” This is the second gold for the US at the WTT.
Surprising everyone was South Korea, who also had a dream competition to win the first-ever gold for South Korea at this event. With top-five skates in the Women’s event, and second in both of the Men’s events, they scored an overall 96 points to come away with a narrow silver. “My short program was very poor for me,” said Team Captain and 2022 World Champion Seung-gil Lee. “I feel like we did very good in the other disciplines, and I’m proud of our silver medal.”
Canada held off Japan to win the bronze by only one point, with 93 points to 92. “There are improvements we could have made for sure,” said reigning Olympic Champion Jean-Jacques Leroy. “But we had solid performances in both Pairs and Dance, and I think my brother really won this for us by winning the short,” said the two-time Grand Prix Final bronze medalist. His younger brother, Louis Leroy, had a personal best score to win the short after the older Leroy popped his Sal, missing the combo. “I was so embarrassed by that mistake, but we still came away with a medal, and I’m proud.”

Stephen will be competing at 2023 Skate America International in Allen, Texas this week. The men's SP starts 7:53 PM CDT on Friday, October 20, and the men's FS starts 8:04 PM CDT on Saturday, October 21.
Stephen's first Grand Prix invite was actually to Skate America in 2020. Some of you may recall how sad and anxious we were when he had to withdraw, and he ended up missing that entire season. In his interview after winning 2022 Challenge he refused to discuss what his injuries were, only mentioning his frustration at having to withdraw in the Olympics site feature article. Thankfully he was able to heal and return to make his GP debut in front of a home crowd in 2022. Three years on he's finally getting to do this event. Let's get it done Stephen.
Also a request to anyone with access to Peacock: if you're able to share videos from the practices on October 19-21 that would be greatly appreciated. I would take care of this if I could. As a Canadian I cannot access that footage at all.
I wanted to make a correction about my misunderstanding about his free skate music. He is not actually skating to the soundtrack for the movie Time Lapse, his program is called Time Lapse as there are two different pieces of music he is skating to entitled that (one of them is also being used by Shoma Uno). The full break down of the music is: Cernunnos by Christian Reindl & Lucie Paradis Existir by Adrián Berenguer Timelapse by Mari Samuelsen, Trondheim Soloists, Jesper Söderqvist & Gunnar Flagstad Time Lapse by Michael Nyman
Links Announcement Schedule Website ISU web page ISU results Detailed results Livestreams SP: CBC, Radio-Canada, ISU
This post will be updated later.
Good luck Stephen!

My Journey with Yuzu
First of all, this post is a VERY long post. It's going to be quite personal, so feel free to skip it if you don't feel like reading everything. Essentially, this is my journey - from first hearing about Yuzu, to actually discovering him and becoming his fan. I also share some thoughts about what comes next in this journey.
2018 PyeongChang Olympics
I was in university working on a project when I heard news that the Olympics were about to start. I have been watching figure skating on-and-off as I child, but had never actually followed a full skating season nor watched an entire competition. PyC was my opportunity. Also, I was not familiar with the skaters, since I hadn't watched competitions since around 2014-2015.
Unfortunately, because of my tight schedule and limited resources at the time, I was unable to find a live stream of the Olympics and I gave up trying to watch.
About a few months later, maybe Summer 2018, I got a recommended ice dance video (I have no clue why or how the YT algorithm suggested me that). It was from a practice session, I don't remember whose, I just remember clicking on it because I thought "figure skating, cool".
The next recommended video was the gold-winning performance from the men's discipline - of course I watched it and loved it. Yep, that was the first time I saw Yuzuru Hanyu, his PyC SEIMEI. But then something came up and I had to get off YT and completely forgot about him.
Spring 2019 (I think)
Fast forward a year and I'm on Pinterest looking up who-knows-what. And this photo appears.
Tumblr media
I was in awe. He looked so strong, determined, broody, he looked like he was solving an equation in his head. Because of the all-black attire, I completely missed the fact that he was wearing skates and thought he was a model or something. Never tried to find out his name.
2020-2021
Then COVID hit. Life was put on pause. More fast forwarding. I watched the Tokyo Olympics in 2021 and before the opening ceremony, I saw some talk that Yuzuru Hanyu was going to show up as the final torch bearer (speculation, more likely). Who is Yuzuru Hanyu? I looked him on Google.
This photo was the second that showed up in the search results.
Tumblr media
It was quite the contrast compared to his first photo in which he was holding up a medal (later I found out it was a photo from the JNats 2020 victory ceremony).
So I went back to YT and saw that I had watched his PyC free skate. So I decided to watch his short program, too.
No, I still wasn't invested or interested in him. The summer Olys were starting, I was trying to keep up with several sports and my sleep schedule was a mess.
2022 Beijing Winter Olympics
I didn't want to miss the figure skating like I did back in 2018. So I got a subscription to watch the Olympics. I decided to get as informed as possible since I had already watched in 2022 the Europeans and Four Continents, too. So I joined figure skating reddit.
On there, before the team event of the Olys, I saw a bingo card and one box features "Yuzu shows up and does the FS". Who is Yuzu?!
That was my downfall. I know him, I've seen his previous Olympics programs. I decided to check his career achievements page - I was impressed then I wanted to know more about him.
I fell down and hard - in about 2 weeks I gathered so much information about him and binged almost half of his programs (every competition in chronological order), if not more.
I was rooting for him so hard, I read about his quest for the 4A, I saw his JNats 2021 Ten to Chi to and his first attempt at incorporating the 4A in a complete program. I was completely mesmerized by his resolve. Of course I found Planet Hanyu and started watching his interviews as well.
By the time the short program competitions rolled around, I was already Yuzu's fan with quite a lot of knowledge of his hardships and achievements. I also was aware of how bad the sport was becoming.
I am so glad I got to see Yuzu's SP, FS and gala live on TV. I was awake at 3-4 am just to watch him - my heart broke both during the SP and FS. But I knew I had seen something amazing, I had seen history made. I saw his Beijing practices, and his programs' medley - I knew I wanted to see him in person one day.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
It's very hard to express exactly what I feel when I watch Yuzu skate, but it's like I'm transported to another world. I wanted so much more. And then the news about him participating at FaOI came. I watched those broadcasts with so much happiness.
I made plans to go to GPF Torino for the up-coming season. Plans which got shredded the moment Yuzu announced that he's going to continue skating as a pro athlete.
Tumblr media
In retrospect, I got the compressed version of Yuzu's career - ups and downs - and that's what makes me happy. I saw his LAST competition - all of it, I'm happy for that. I'm sorry I did not see him podium, but that's another story.
I will continue re-watching his competitive programs, his galas, I will continue supporting him and finding every piece of media that features him.
I will do my best to one day attend one of his future ice shows, be it in Japan or another place.
I haven't known him for a long time, but he's made a great impression on me.
I finished reading his autobiographies on the night between 18th and 19th July. I learnt so much more about him. The next day, he left competitive skating.
Now I'm here, waiting for news about his future plans and what he's going to come up with. I am looking forward to his new programs. Yuzuru Hanyu's skating is still happening, on his own terms - that's what I care about.

Uno Shoma returns to his origin with a “chanson” as he faces new season as the World Champion.
TEAMING UP WITH FORMER COACH HIGUCHI MIHOKO FOR THE FIRST TIME IN THREE YEARS 24 years old Uno Shoma (Toyota Corp.) who won his first World Championship last season in Men’s Figure Skating, took a step towards the next stage without losing his “natural” charm. On August 25, at Kose Shin Yokohama Skate Center in Yokohama, he performed his exhibition number ‘Padam, padam’ for the first time at the public rehearsal of Friends on Ice which marks the end of summer ice show season.  Riding on the relaxing masterpiece of "Chanson" which has a vague melancholy and a gorgeous melody, the performance by the figure skater who became the world champion after growing from the bottom through ups and downs, highlighted Uno Shoma’s personality. These past few years had also been a turbulent period with big changes as an athlete. He regarded even ice shows as a place where he wants to improve himself at, and seemed to re-challenge his return to origins by teaming up for the first time in 3 years. DETERMINED TO ENHANCE HIS POWER OF EXPRESSION, “A PATH I’VE CHOSEN MYSELF” Shoma Uno, who won the silver medal at the 2018 PyeongChang Winter Olympics, made the big decision in June 2019 to leave the coaches of Machiko Yamada and Mihoko Higuchi, who had been coaching him since he was five years old. The scene of him teaming up with his former coach Higuchi Mihoko after a long time was also uploaded on Uno Shoma’s official YouTube.  Having known each other since his childhood, the smile as she gives advice about his stance right before the song begins or on the detailed choreography of his finish, reveals their trusting relationship, slightly different to the one he has with ex-World Champion Stephane Lambiel.  Uno Shoma commented, “I want to move forward on the path I’ve chosen myself without rushing anything. Things like choreography as well, since I chose this sport called Figure Skating, even though jumps get the most points, I think expression is one of the charms of figure skating, so I think it will continue to demonstrate it’s true value at ice shows.” And he pledged a new challenge to improve his expressive power on ice.  “I hope to skate to various programs so I can show everyone even a little different side of me, so that they can be surprised and have fun.”   THIS SEASON’S GP SERIES ARE SKATE CANADA AND NHK TROPHY. This season Shoma Uno, set goals to his “progress” of acquiring the highly difficult quadruple lutz, and shows interest in the blues-guitar song “Gravity”, his new SP. Officially announcing Bach’s Air as his new Free Program, he’s scheduled for this season’s Grand Prix Series’ second round in Skate Canada (October 28-30, Missisauga)  and fifth round in NHK Trophy (November 18-20, Sapporo). There’s no comparing the relationship of trust he has with Coach Lambiel, who had been a savior from the period he was without a coach, with the time he spent returning to his origins with Coach Higuchi Mihoko.   On his own YouTube he spoke of a unique relationship of trust, “With Stephane, Stephane does it (new programs) by himself. I feel like I have to imitate that, but I’ve known (Higuchi) Mihoko Sensei since a long time ago, so I think I have a relationship I can only have with Mihoko Sensei where I can say things like ‘Is it like this? Is it like that?’”  When asked about his vision of an ideal athlete, Shoma Uno mentioned Nathan Chen (USA) who recently won Beijing Winter Olympics 2022. Towards a new stage as a skater. Shoma Uno doesn’t intend to stop his “growth” even after becoming the world champion.  30 August 2022, Source || spaia.jp

For clarification: Yes Yuzuru Hanyu took part at the Olympics, but not for the team event. The team event consists of all 4 disciplines, for which every team has to skate a short program (rhythm dance) and free program (free dance). Not the same skaters have to skate for each segment, but there are only two changes allowed. There was only place for a maximum of two skaters in single disciplines. While Japan had 3 entries for men in the individual event, only maximum two could compete for the team event.
There is no direct information as far as I know how the selection for the skaters for the Team event were decided, but bc Yuzuru Hanyu was dealing with an injury it's very likely he decided to not be selected. Otherwise as the National champion he would have been selected to skate if he would have wished to skate.
I hope this helps as an explanation.
It definitely helps, thank you so much! I didn't see the connection between three skaters participating in the single's event but only two being allowed in the team event. Thank you so much for taking the time and effort to explain it to me!

Figure skating champion Yuzuru to continue putting it ‘all on the line’ even as a pro
When asked about his efforts to reach this point in his career, Yuzuru Hanyu said, “I feel like I’m at my peak right now. But through trial and error, I’ll continue to try and get better.”
July 21, 2022
TOKYO – “I can say with confidence, ‘Please continue to have expectations for me,’” were words that stood out as two-time Winter Olympic figure skating champion Yuzuru Hanyu announced his retirement from international competition at a Tuesday press conference in Tokyo.
The 27-year-old star, who has established a place in the pantheon of the sport, said he would move on to the next stage in his career as a professional whose main activities will now be ice shows.
There were no tears from him on this day. In fact, Hanyu beamed his typical charming smile as he announced his decision.
He said he first thought of stepping away from the front lines of competitive figure skating right after the PyeongChang Winter Games in 2018, when he became the first men’s competitor in 66 years to win back-to-back Olympic singles titles. However, he pushed ahead as a competitive skater, trying to successfully land quadruple Axel jumps, or 4½-rotation jumps, and competed at the Beijing Winter Olympics in February.
Hanyu, though, took a spill after executing a quad in his free routine.
“It occurred to me that I might not have to land the jump in a competitive event. I thought maybe I could do it in public at something other than a competition,” Hanyu offered as the reason for his decision to turn pro.
“At the time of the Beijing Games, I thought maybe I had no more room for improvement,” he said in response to a question on his approach to successfully landing quad Axel jumps. “Now I feel I have plenty of room to improve,” said Hanyu, who remained positive as he delivered his remarks.
When asked about his efforts to reach this point in his career, he said, “I feel like I’m at my peak right now. But through trial and error, I’ll continue to try and get better.”
He envisions a new form of ice entertainment, which will be at the center of what he does going forward as a pro. Ice shows are currently structured to feature brilliant and dynamic skating that entertains spectators.
“I want to give skating performances that bring a lot of intensity to the crowd. I’ll pour all my physical strength and concentration into each and every movement, and keep on going by putting it all on the line, in a sense,” he said.
Repercussions overseas
SHANGHAI / BEIJING — The news of Hanyu’s retirement from international competition has drawn much attention not only in Japan but also overseas.
In China, where there is no shortage of Hanyu fans, many media outlets, including the online edition of the national broadcaster China Central Television, treated his press conference on Tuesday as breaking news.
On social media platforms, words featuring his retirement were trending atop search lists. Many users wrote posts such as “I can’t really hear the things my boss is telling me to do [because I’m too preoccupied by the press conference],” and “An era has ended.”
Chinese fans were particularly moved by Hanyu’s brave attempt to land a quad Axel jump, even though he fell, at the Beijing Games. On the Chinese social media platform Weibo, many young people who passed entrance exams to academically demanding elite schools posted messages of gratitude to Hanyu, such as “He gave me courage to pursue my dreams.”

Man, I was just remembering before the season started and how people were talking about the, "Yuma vs. Ilia," rivalry that was going to be the storyline of the season and how it was going to be the next Yuzu vs. Nathan (side note, rivalries manufactured by the press are stupid) and Shoma was just an afterthought and no one paid attention to him...
...And then Yuma withdrew for the season and Shoma proceeded to win everything he competed in. It's all very funny in hindsight (except the Yuma withdrawing due to injury part).
I would not say Shoma was not part of the conversation at all as the current world champion, but yes you're right Yuma vs. Ilia was what was anticipated and Shoma was more of a sidenote.
BUT things hardly ever go how ppl imagine it to be. (wishing for a return of Yuma at full force next season 🙏)
It was always stupid to count out Shoma as the most decorated skater, the one with the 5 quads in the free, one of the few skaters who ever scores beyond 200+ (FS) and 300+ (total) and as the CURRENT WORLD CHAMPION.
Where did ppl think Shoma would place with his experience, his reputation and medal track record? 3rd? I don't even understand why Shoma erasure even existed? (I mean I know the reasoning of some fans, but that's not the point) Just realistically everyone could see that Shoma was on an upward trajectory in the Olympic season. Yuma as runner for 1st place I understand better bc he had a very good Olympic season and high scores just like Shoma, but as you could see at Worlds 2022 with Yuma and Ilia experience is important. They could not handle the pressure well - Yuma of having a chance to win and Ilia with his own expectations of medaling at senior Worlds to show he should have gone to the Olympics. And also Shoma was not only the most decorated and experienced of the 3 skaters but he also had a higher technical level than Yuma with 5 quads in his free and Yuma's 4Lo being unstable and Shoma's BV even with Ilia's 4A is not that far ahead of Shoma either. And in terms of PCS Yuma could have matched Shoma but Ilia? First season senior skaters hardly ever get high PCS at the start and it's not like Ilia was known for his skating skills etc in juniors unlike Shoma or Yuma who were recognized for skating skills in juniors already. I also feared Ilia's PCS might rocket during the season and imo his PCS are way too high from the start but it's still far off of what Shoma gets for even imperfect skates.
Shoma winning every competition was actually only logical. Some ppl may not like it and press may not have realized it due to Shoma always kind of 3rd wheeling results wise behind Nathan and Yuzu though his potential was always there (maybe also because Shoma always praising these two as being better than him may have played a part in media's view) BUT Shoma is the main contender and main star of each competition now. He is the all-around skater and what has stood in his way in the past he has found a consistency in performance he didn't have before. You can count the falls Shoma had in competition this season on one hand. Shoma is at a far superior level than anyone else atm not only because of the technical content or his PCS being the highest (apart from Jason Brown) BUT because he found the confidence and consistency he lacked in other senior seasons.
I hope Shoma is fully healed from his injury by the start of the next season. I hope Yuma will also be back at full force. I hope Ilia will work on his skating rather than his jumps. I hope Junhwan Cha can keep his good trajectory of the Worlds and WTT🙏 If those wishes do come true we should have a very exciting next season ahead.
Shoma winning everything is cool and all and ofc victories as secure as they might have seemed with Shoma are still not guaranteed and are a big achievement BUT imo the men competition lacked quite some level overall.
That being said ofc I will still root for Shoma to win all competitions. Just bc I wish for a better level doesn't mean I like to see Shoma lose. 😉

A few weeks ago, I randomly saw video of Nathan Chen as a child and so I’m partial to him…
OKAY SO Nathan is my actual favorite but his last competition was the olympics so I have only seen his 2022 nationals and 2022 olympics. My this season favorite to watch is Jason Brown since he only did nationals and worlds and is somehow one of the best in the world even though he is not actually competing or trying to improve. He is just SO beautiful on the ice. My dark horse fave I stan is Camden Pulkinen because he has so much raw potential and could be one of the best but is inconsistent king. I also like watching Ilia Malinin because he is one of the best in the world (finishing mens free skate tomorrow but he is probably in top 3). But he also has no artistry so I just like seeing how many tricks he can fit in. BUT OVERALL Nathan is so so good and my actual fave. I just havent seen him in forever

Woo. I got VERY worked up during the men's free skate Olympics 2022. I have been waiting for this moment for 4 years. I spent most of the last hour screeching. I felt more emotions in one night than I have in years, and now I'm bright red, my head is pounding, I'm sweating, generally feel terrible. My blood pressure is probably through the roof.
Jason was robbed. How did they justify giving hanyu that high a score? He fell multiple times and his artistry and presentation were worse than normal. Again, Jason was robbed. Almost everyone BUT Jason was overscored in some way, yes, i know. I will be staying out of fs fandom drama. Congratulations to two time olympic singles medalist uno shoma. Loved his costume. Donovan Carrillo was fantastic and I wish him the best. What the fuck was nathan wearing and why?? Why does he always do this??
Anyway I'm gonna lay in the dark with an ice pack on my head and listen to soothing music and try to sleep at some point tonight.

The closer we get to Yuzuru Hanyu, the more my heart beats faster.
I'm so anxious.

Didn’t get to say it last night but the mens podium wraps up an era and starts a new at the same time.
You have Shoma at bronze, honestly who would have thought he could medal again after how up and down things had been this past quad but he got himself together at the right time to produce results.
You have Nathan who had to shrug of the media storm that decimated him after pyeongchang and remained clear-headed till the end.
You have Yuma who represents the future of skating as he is to now carry on the legacy of Japanese men in the sport.
And we can’t forget Yuzuru Hanyu of course for pushing his own personal limits and though it may not have worked out in the end, he will forever remain an icon to the sport.
Outside of the bigger names the entire mens event was filled with the past and the future that’s going to take over once they retire and it was very emotional to see.

Okay im so fucking proud of Hanyu. The fact that he had the courage to go for the 4A at the Olympics is so amazing. And the rest of his program was so beautiful and elegant. Forever my favorite figure skater, none of them make me feel so moved like he does. I hope he walked away from that feeling proud of himself
