Mercedes-Benz W 25 750-kg racing car in Mercedes-Benz Museum Stuttgart . The W 25 was the original Silver Arrow. Originally painted white, it arrived at the Nürburgring for its first race one kilogram too heavy for the 750-kg (1,650-pound) formula. The mechanics sanded down the paintwork in order to reduce its weight, exposing the bare, shining silver colour of its body. Suitably relieved, the team was able to line up at the start with the W 25. The car went on to win the race and later picked up its nickname Silver Arrow. “The Blue Wonder” In the 1950s, the Mercedes Benz Formula 1 team used a custom built car hauler that was powered by the same engine used in their 300 SL Gullwing. The called in The Blue Wonder, and they weren't kidding. Its swoopy design belies the fact that this is a massive vehicle. It's 6.75-meters long and two-meters-wide. The transporter was built up on a lengthened tubular frame from the Mercedes-Benz 300 S luxury coupe of the same era. It was motivated by a three-liter inline-six with direct-injection that was lifted directly from the legendary 300 SL Gullwing sports car of 1955. Other components, like the doors, fenders and some of the interior bits were taken from the standard Mercedes-Benz 180 sedan. After Mercedes-Benz pulled out of racing at the end of 1955 following the Le Mans tragedy from the previous June, the 'Blue Wonder' was used as an exhibition vehicle in the USA. After that it was used for ten years by the Mercedes-Benz test department. 1954-Mercedes-Benz-Blue-Wonder-12 For unknown reasons, the great Rudolf Uhlenhaut, one of the greatest racing engineers ever, and manager of the motor sports department during the transporter's racing period, had the Blue Wonder model scrapped in 1967. I’m seriously going to miss the one of a kind gentleman. A ‘legend’ in every sense of the word. A true Champion. How he raced in an era without modern safety and technology is something in itself I can’t comprehend. Stirling Moss will always be my hero. I had the honor and privilege to work with him several times and i was completely amazed at his genuine kindness. One of my best memories of him was hearing him tell Milk about a place to eat in London . He was so kind and really took the time to talk her .
