The Kindest Power: How Midoriya might save Tenko
Originally, this post was supposed to be a response to another post about 411 (Yes, I'm late), about why Yoichi might be oddly calm when Shinomori was stolen. This post itself was also going to be more of a continuation of my previous post about the true nature of One For All and All For One.
But while thinking of this post, I may have went into a deep rabbit hole and uncovered the ending of My Hero Academia, how Midoriya might save Tenko and defeat All For One.
Okay, so buckle your seatbelts, this might be one of the craziest theories yet-
The other post by @shiroforest in which this post was going to be a response to was actually more of a DFO post. The usual, Yoichi hiding a secret that Midoriya has AFO or something.
I'd like to say that they may have been right. Well, half right. Midoriya DOES have All For One. Not in the way you might think.
One For All IS the same as All For One. I made this post all about this subject, that Yoichi and AFO were most likely identical twins, and since quirks are genetic, they were supposed to have the same quirk. But due to TTTS, Yoichi's quirk couldnt develop properly, thus manifesting differently from All For One
ThIs seems to have aged really well in the following chapter:
Tumblr media
Essentially, Yoichi's quirk was just a half-baked version of All For One. It also explains why it was able to merge easily with an entirely different quirk (Stockpile). Since Yoichi's quirk was half-baked and incomplete, it was much easier for it to adapt and merge into another quirk entirely (If Yoichi's quirk was fully formed, it would've stayed seperate)
Okay, so OFA was AFO but incomplete. How does this factor in with that panel of Yoichi, or MHA's endgame?
Well, it was incomplete.
Tumblr media
This started changing 200 chapters ago. Where, according to Banjo, it started growing. The metaphor used is very interesting now we know OFA's circumstances.
Tumblr media
Apparently in the original Japanese text, the metaphor used is just like an unborn child, growing and kicking in the womb.
And we know that OFA was underdeveloped because Yoichi was deprived of the nutrients to fully mature before birth.
OFA, from the beginning of Ch 193, has actually resumed its development process. Finishing off where it left off, and started growing as it matured.
The time it made contact with All For One in ch 287 must've quickened the process. After that event, the OFA Users managed to finally come out and communicate with Midoriya directly.
Remember what I said about how OFA was supposed to be the same as AFO, just halted during the development process?
Yes, you heard me right.
Midoriya and Shigaraki are fighting with the same quirk right now.
Horikoshi likes to put double meaning in his panels. If a speech bubble is displayed on an unrelated character, that means Horikoshi wants us to see a connection with what's being said to this other character
Tumblr media
Yoichi is looking at his hand, which is actually also the exact same hand in which he passed on OFA to Kudo before his death. His power of giving, juxtaposed with the mention of the power of stealing by En.
There is a chance that Yoichi might've been thinking about what to do with the situation, he could be thinking of taking Shinomori back, or just speculating about what he can really do. Either way, it's actually foreshadowing. That Yoichi might be able to take just as much as give.
Perhaps, at this point of the story, One For All is already fully complete. Because Midoriya can now seemingly just throw or give away the quirks stored in OFA the exact same way AFO can give away quirks in his disposal as of the newest chapter, ch 413. Without the old complicated process beforehand of consuming DNA or something. (Watch this age horribly next chapter, but I think that's what will happen)
The only thing that's missing now is the trigger. All thats left is for Midoriya to instinctively think of "taking" to trigger the ability at this point.
But what would trigger Midoriya into taking?
Perhaps, to save a life.
Tumblr media
I think it's clear that Horikoshi is currently using quirks as a representation for a person's heart and soul. After all, they are also called "individuality".
Even though AFO uses his power in cruel ways, Yoichi says that the power to "give and take" could have been the "kindest" power in the whole world. He's referring to both here, "taking" can be just as kind as "giving".
Tumblr media
Maybe this power can save just as much as destroy.
As of Ch 413, Kudo makes a plan with Midoriya to basically fire OFA's quirks at Shigaraki to free Tenko Shimura, the child.
But what happens when Tenko is free? There is a chance he might be vulnerable to AFO (his abuser) and Tomura Shigaraki (the two are constantly seperated in the narrative)
Both might want to destroy Tenko, especially the former. Midoriya, out of desperation to try and save the crying child, might unlock OFA's "taking" ability, getting the child away from AFO's grasp. This probs has to happen right before Midoriya gets ready to throw One For All.
I think this might also be the part where the door of OFA gets unlocked. It's a back-door, a way in and out. The hand in which Tomura grabbed the Shinomori was OVER where the door is supposed to be.
Tumblr media
When Midoriya unlocks the ability to take, the door might be opened in which Midoriya and maybe even Yoichi save Tenko and bring him into the OFA space.
Rather than a forceful "take" like AFO does, it's presented as a choice. Tenko is given the choice in which he can come with Midoriya or stay where he is now. Because saving is a two way street.
Since heart = quirk, having Tenko might also take away Decay, which would also prevent the incoming mass destruction.
(Make this more heartbreaking if Nana was already taken at this point by AFO, and she's the one trying to protect Tenko long enough till Midoriya and Yoichi take him away. They also try to save Nana but are unable to, Nana apologising for not being there for Tenko and asks them to take care of her grandson, argghhh-)
Here's a scenario of how I think it might all go down:
When Tenko is saved, this leaves Midoriya vs AFO and Tomura, desperate to get Decay back and OFA. Midoriya desperately tries to defend Tenko. Tenko, now in the OFA space, sees Midoriya's genuine desire to protect him, something he was desperate wished for.
This eventually fails, and ShigarAFO gets the opportunity to steal OFA and Tenko a few times, perhaps losing the remaining vestiges until only Yoichi and Tenko are left. Finally having enough, Tenko ends up intervening, and decays the hand that was reaching into the OFA space.
Its a perfect callback to the times Midoriya has saved before. Not only does Midoriya save people no matter what, his actions would in turn also inspire others to act too. He saved Eri, and so her power later saved him. He saved Kota, and Kota then used his quirk to protect Midoriya. It's perfect, because Tenko Shimura is the combination of both characters.
Remember how the quirks in OFA were enhanced due to stockpile?
Tenko, while defending Midoriya and OFA, also ends up decaying a portion of AFO's quirks as a result of being enhanced by OFA.
So this leads to Tenko suggesting he goes back in there to destroy AFO and his quirks from within.
Yoichi is unsure at first, since Star also tried the same thing, she eventually got destroyed before she managed to destroy all the other quirks. So the only way for Tenko to be successful is for OFA to go with him, so it could be strong enough to destroy it all at once before Tenko is destroyed.
This could also lead to OFA being destroyed too, Yoichi holding back his brother long enough when only OFA and AFO are what's left to keep him away from Tenko, allowing him to finish it all off once and for all. There's a good chance Tenko won't make it out either. In a sense, Tenko Shimura fulfills his dream that he was denied of all his life and dies a hero.
This is the big moment in which Midoriya has to prove whether he is the same as those in Tenko's family (denying him), or be someone who can finally give him the words that he always yearned for, the validation that "You can be a hero".
Midoriya's final test is letting someone go.
Tumblr media
Maybe this isnt just the closure Tenko needs, but for all three of them (Yoichi, Midoriya, Tenko). These three were the ones denied of becoming heroes one way or another, finally being given the chance.
It's a triple sacrifice.
Horikoshi planned this from the start, Ch 193 and onwards were all build up towards this very moment. Bakugo noting that OFA being the same as AFO almost 200 chapters wasn't just some observation or symbolic parallel, it was set up. Because the two are one and the same, and it's the very key to Midoriya's goal in saving Tenko Shimura.
I know, some might not agree, it might even be controversial because of how similar this is to AFO, but I'd like to say that it might not be like that.
A big theme in MHA is how one's quirk, personality, or nature isn't all that makes a person a villain or a hero, it's also the nurture and how they use it. A power used for "destruction" can also be used for "salvation". The power that can be used in the most cruellest ways can also be the kindest. This applies to both All For One (in the form of One For All) and Tenko's decay.
I don't know, what do you think? Crazy? I would agree that Horikoshi is crazy if this happens to be accurate-

MHA Ch.381 leak reactions:
Rukasu’s summary says “The chapter begins with Camie confused by the fact that AFO has a face now.” That tracks. The real question is if she thinks he’s even a little bit hot.
Immobilize Himiko Toga = uh oh! She’s at her most dangerous when she’s feeling big emotions and/or trying to evade capture (her greatest fear is being caught).
“Stop AFO ASAP.” Tsukauchi’s not wrong, but he basically told Hawks to keep going for the head. Interesting that Shishikura makes a point of NOT giving in to the urge to kill AFO….
AFO goes Zeus mode with lightning attacks (he’s already got the toga, the cropped hair, the illegitimate children). Hawks realizes AFO is finally using some quirks, whereas before was he was “just” using the brute strength and wisdom of a 200-year-old, 7’4” floating demon lord.
Hawks goes back to being Endeavor’s hype man, saying Endeavor is bringing hope to him, Inasa, and the 1A kids. Inasa confirms he’s backing Shoto and Endeavor. Honestly I would love seeing Inasa with Shoto here, rather than whatever is going on with Hawks and Endeavor. I do not see what Endeavor is doing (yet) that is giving hope to the kids. They had to kick his ass to make him help them retrieve Izuku, and it’s not like he was really caring for Izuku before then. Maybe the “hope” derived from the fact he’s still standing? Idk, no matter what Hawks says, this just won’t land for me until I see what happens with Toya.
AFO simps for All Might and talks about how he was the only man to “match” AFO. Wow, that’s quite the compliment! AFO just didn’t know what he had until it was “gone,” huh? Then, it turns out All Might DID tell Hawks and Endeavor about how AFO’s quirk worked in terms of stealing — it needs a physical, corporeal touch. (God I wish we saw that actual conversation instead of hearing about it from Hawks. Like I want Endeavor’s face while All Might explains his brutal battle against AFO over their magic quirks.)
TOKOYAMI RISING!!! YEEAHHH! Go on, short king!! Unleash your darkness!! Hawks says he is grateful for his “dirty” wings if he was even able to help Tokoyami a little??? Sure, but Hawks had better not be taking credit for Tokoyami’s power or general awesomeness. The kid did that on his own, without the mentor that wasn’t into the next generation. [Edit: I see people saying AFO already stole Dark Shadow — that may be, but I typically work off of text spoilers. I try not to look at the leaked low res newspaper print panels bc I prefer seeing the hi res art in context with official translations first. Like if I’m gonna spend time studying panels, I want the pretty ones…]

Alright, so the leaks.
@ The AFO battle was just...??? What in the Hell??? That's literally all I have to say to it because the only way to get rid of AFO is to turn him into a fucking baby and have Bakugo fight said baby. It was the most ridiculous thing, that I just laughed at it. Because what the Hell????????? Minus that, I'm glad he's gone so we can FINALLY focus on Izuku VS Shigaraki.
Which, I have to ask, how in the HELL did Shigaraki tell Danger Sense?? Like, is it because AFO is dead now and Shigaraki can have, like- full access to the quirk(s) within OFA?? I just HOPE it's not a dumb thing like fucking jean heart and exploding blood over here. But I will say, it's nice to finally have some stakes again with Shigaraki being able to just destroy a city within just a week and him having Danger Sense, now. ....I just hope Izuku VS. Shigaraki is like the most epic fight we see while Izuku is weirdly side lined via the whole AFO VS Bakugo... thing.
The ONLY way to salvage MHA is to give us a kick ass Izuku vs Shigaraki fight. Maybe then I'll think about forgiving Horikoshi.
AFO turning into a baby is one of the most bizarre things I've ever seen in a manga. And not even the kind of bizarre that's, "Oh that's so cool and creative" the kind of bizarre that's, "Well that was fucking weird." Also pretty insensitive to have Bakugou of all people fight him in that form considering what's been happening in the world lately. There was just no reason for it.
(AFO in general was such a let down. When he was first introduced he was a calm and collected master manipulator. Later chapters changed that into him just being a child who never grew up throwing a temper tantrum. This was the guy that ruled Japan's underbelly for 200 years, killed almost every OFA user, and chronically injured ALL MIGHT. And you mean to tell me that this was underneath that? Just a pathetic child? Freaking Dad For One fics gave him more personality and seriousness than that)
I'm gonna assume Shigaraki has full access to AFO now. That would make the most sense, not that Hori's known for doing that

Everyone knows I'm deranged about Digimon Survive, but here are some unhinged things I did while in other fandoms!
MHA:
Was a leader on the kiribaku amino.
Amino.
Amino.
Let that sink in just a little longer.
Participated in a secret santa event in said amino by compiling the most requested prompts by all the members and writing for all of them. Why did I do that to myself!
Hetalia because yes I was that cringe:
Opened a short story collection to requests, forgot to specify things I didn't want to write, didn't want to turn down my first request, and wrote abo smut. I think I was like 15 at that point ksjskd I cannot express strongly enough how much I do now and did then hate abo
...changed my pfp to a sfw screenshot from an nsfw comic because I thought it was funny that no one could call me on it without admitting they recognized where it was from💀 yeah I was...one of those kids 💀💀💀💀
Kingdom Hearts:
Wrote 200k words worth of fic for that fandom. For reference I've only done ~40k for Survive.
Most of it was for a rarepair that never met in canon because something is very wrong with me! A lot of rest was for pairs that have met but are still also rare because again something is very wrong with me!
I reread. The entirety of Roxas's diary from 358. Just so I could emulate his writing style for a fic.
Actually ran a gimmick account for a while! I haven't done that before or since!
Temporarily replaced my entire personality with really loving Vanitas. Kinda like how I am with Kaito rn but somehow even worse. Somethin about a fucked up black and red color scheme boy 😔😔😔
Talked about it SO MUCH irl that two of my friends literally stopped wanting to talk to me anymore cuz they were so sick of hearing about Roxas
Genshin Impact:
Wrote a joke fic for a ship I hate but accidentally took it too seriously to the point where it was not clear that it was a joke and it became my second most popular fic not on that account but of all time and I'm STILL angry about it
Wrote one of the first 5 fics to ever exist for, you guessed it, another rarepair
I...see this isn't about my behavior in the fandom necessarily but it's kinda embarrassing how feral I went over Thoma. Like,,,spent money on the game for the first time just to get a weapon that matched his outfit, built a whole ass shrine to him in my in-game home, GOT MY EARS PIERCED DO YOU KNOW HOW EMBARRASSING THAT IS, listened to nothing but his theme song for a very very very long time, bought entirely too much merch of him/him and Ayaka, refused to take him off my team no matter how useless pyro was even in floor 12 spiral abyss, and perhaps most embarrassing of all...read x reader fanfic for the first time since I was literally 11 💀 That man DID something to me y'all
Sasaki to Miyano:
Knew the manga so well that I could tell you exactly what chapter any given scene was from
Sent a different picture of Sasaki to my irls' gc every day for over 200 days
Got better at baking and learning recipes for friends as a way of expressing affection because that's what Sasaki does

Manga With Me: MHA Pocket Theory Edition
Todoroki Family Dynamics
⚠️ Spoiler Warning: focused on chapters 175-200 and may reference previous chapters.
Tumblr media
Shoto’s sympathetic flame 🥺
I'm in the middle of drafting my ✨unsolicited analysis✨ of MHA when I realized the Todoroki’s deserve their own exploration (and a specialized team of therapists). From Fuyumi guilting Natsuo about never calling home to their trauma den which just screams “Let’s completely gloss over our shared neglect and abuse and be happy now” to Natsuo’s loud and justifiable resentment of Endeavor. Fuyumi tries desperately to hold onto the jagged pieces of her family (likely to her own detriment and surely to the discomfort of all those involved) and their unique responses to their upbringing inspires me to believe that, ultimately, Shoto's older siblings remember things in a way that he can’t.
Tumblr media
Note: This analysis is largely focused around the fight Endeavor has with the Nomu following his official ranking as the #1 Hero and their subsequent reactions. Back to the point!
Shoto, being the chosen one, likely only remembers his own targeted abuse as Endeavor made it a point to separate him from the "failed experiments" to focus his training. Due to his lack of socialization and subsequent alienation, it would be difficult to perceive the negativity in his siblings' upbringing since, from his side of the fence, things are look bleak by comparison based on the glimpses he sees of his siblings in passing. Similarly, Rei, his only respite from his father's violence, ultimately lashed out with a cruel assault against Shoto. From a child's standpoint, it would be impossible to perceive his siblings' neglect and challenging to be empathetic where they they can more comprehensively understand the abuse he was subjected to in tandem with their neglect.
For starters, if Endeavor wasn't using their obvious physical traits as indicators for the powers they'd ultimately yield, each of the Todoroki children likely suffered the intensity of his scrutiny before being discarded for their supposed inferiority. Given Endeavor's quirk, I can't help but liken this attention to the warmth of the sun (when you have nothing to compare his "love" to) wherein the absence would sting just as much when their quirks eventually manifested. But as the Todoroki family grew and more children were cast aside, they'd find warmth and build community around one another. This is something Shoto is not able to partake in for some time if at all.
As they've grown, each of them cope differently: Shoto by way of avoidance and rebellion, Natsuo by aggressive confrontation and desertion, Fuyumi by placation and delusion. Then you have Rei in this section, who mentions the fact that, even though she only mentioned her favorite flower to Endeavor once, he still remembers and sends them to her in the hospital. As if to say that is in some way redemption for his treatment of her otherwise. Is it to suggest that their relationship wasn’t as black and white as we’re made to believe? I’m curious to know what the flower is and its inherent meaning.
Frequently when reading, I find the need to remind myself that the information presented comes to the reader by way of Deku's understanding and interpretation. As such, what we know of the Todoroki family is likely filtered through Shoto's recollection and subsequent perception which includes Endeavor's stratagem to forge strong progeny by way of a forced quirk marriage. This is not to suggest that Endeavor is in some way excused in his villainy. He was clearly abusive, obsessive and neglectful. But it challenges what we know of he and Rei's relationship (and potentially its origin) when she chooses to look back fondly on those flowers. Shoto's influence in the interpretation of the family dynamic is also evident in that Rei, a victim to Endeavor's abuse, is never also seen as abusive despite Shoto carrying the physical evidence of her abuse for the rest of his life. He is sympathetic to his mother so she is perceived sympathetically.
Now, fast forward to the bloody Endeavor vs Nomu fight broadcasted in real time. As Endeavor’s fight worsens, Fuyumi and Shoto (and weirdly, All Might) are shown to have visceral reactions to the fight which subtly suggests that Shoto’s feelings of his father are a bit more complicated than his regular denouncement may lead us to believe. In the face of Natsuo’s criticism of fighting a losing battle, Fuyumi concedes that giving up is what Endeavor is worst at. Given the context, this indicates Fuyumi's admiration of Endeavor's minimally redeeming qualities.
Tumblr media
Shoto’s reaction is the title gif but peep All Might's (now a relic of hero culture) reaction below 👇🏾
Tumblr media
Critically, by the conclusion of the fight, Shoto seems to see his father in earnest and is relieved by his success despite his resentment. This is an indication of the growth he's experienced while at UA in terms of his emotional depth and range which is sometimes overlooked because of his lack of socialization and general awkwardness. It also belies a complexity to the relationship Shoto has with his father that is likely steeped in as much bitterness as it is in admiration. Is it the redemption that Endeavor deserves? No, this remains an Endeavor slander account. But it's further exposition into Shoto's character evolution.
Tumblr media
While I don't assume writers know every minute detail of their story when they get started, there are some things that I have to assume are not for no reason. Like, why include this family dynamic and flesh it out to this degree?
On the one hand, I think the dichotomy of Endeavor's character as it relates to him being a Pro Hero is an exploration into the overarching theme of MHA which ultimately questions what is good and evil when we all have a duality within us that can be influenced by external circumstances or stimuli. Never meet your heroes because no one is inherently good. Every one holds a potential for darkness especially without the limitations of public scrutiny.
Tumblr media
On the other hand, I wonder if this family dynamic is meant to be a microcosm for the larger power/social struggle in universe that has been building momentum and pulling at the fibers of what's keeping "the peace" because as with the Todoroki family and hero culture at large, there's sure to be a reckoning.
Endeavor would obviously be a metaphor for reigning hero culture which can be largely problematic despite its supposed virtuousness. It covets strength as a suppressant though, ultimately, its dissonant zeal for violence galvanizes opposing factions.
Rei, generationally, would be the pacified general public who remembers the chaos that came before civilization righted itself into the balance it maintains now. Whether quirkless or simply possessing a quirk but not choosing to or able to sway one way or another, the general public accepts the current nature of things and their precarious day to day life despite having previously been a victim to burgeoning quirk culture. This is especially relevant as Rei appears to be a victim of a forced quirk marriage which was prevalent while the frenzy around quirks was new. Essentially, Rei represents those within hero society who are not strong enough in character or quirk strength to oppose whatever the order de jour may be. Note: the comparison preceding this sentence is not an assessment or reflection of Rei as a victim of domestic, verbal or spousal abuse.
Fuyumi and the work she's doing to mend the family I guess would align her with the Hero Public Safety Commission or the Police Commission and their propagandist agendas to maintain "justice" (or peace at home) and the balance of society. Though I find both groups to be far more nefarious than I'd like to imagine she is, her desperate smile-first mentality does seem to be similar to the veneer of unopposed strength the HPSC tries to put forward.
Natsuo would embody those who are challenging hero culture as the status quo a la The League of Villains, Hassaikai and Stain supporters. He's openly critical of Endeavor with other members of the family as well as to Endeavor's face, constantly reminding him of the travesties committed against his siblings. However, I feel like he is similar in metaphorical function to Rei where he lacks strength to really do any damage just yet.
Shoto, downtrodden but showing promise, would be a pretty pointed representation of the new generation of people possessing quirks and those that follow. One, his power is likely to out class Endeavor's which is in line with the Quirk Singularity Theory which was presented and illustrated during his supplementary provisional lessons with the unruly elementary schoolers. Two, we see that Shoto is who Endeavor wishes to safeguard the future for (something else manifested during that finishing course for Pro Heroes as it were). Third, and I think most importantly, during the Stain arc, Shoto was able to acknowledge the existence of opposing schools of thought to hero culture calling Stain an idealist which contrasted starkly against Deku's ignorance about anything but strict reverence for hero culture. Because it started at home. While Shoto may not side with Stain or other idealists, he is intimately aware of the flawed hero system if someone like Endeavor can be a publicly lauded a hero while privately being as morally reprehensible as the villains he seeks to subjugate. Within the focus group of the Todoroki family, this is demonstrated by his dismissive and antagonistic opposition to Endeavor which is similar to Natsuo's demeanor. But it is conflicted by a nostalgic admiration for Endeavor and, by extension, hero culture as illustrated by an unexpectedly sympathetic reaction synced with Fuyumi when Endeavor was on the ropes against an OP Nomu and the pursuit of his own pro-hero career. Notably, Shoto's physicality in quirk and appearance is in line with this propensity for paradoxical thinking. I think Shoto's hope for Endeavor's triumph in that moment shows a lingering connection to hope that heroes will prevail. If Shoto represents generations to come, his conflicting emotions can speak to the earnest hopes of Class 1A but also illustrate how that seems to be an antiquated viewpoint as illustrated by the unruly children. Their strength and determination to make a splash is inspired by their observation that the balance of power is slipping from the hands of heroes and Shoto seems like he'd be a great example of that.
TLDNR: We, as the reader, are missing critical information about the Todoroki family based on the siblings' unique behavior toward Endeavor despite a presumed similarity in upbringing.

I’m not convinced MHA 400 will be a special hype chapter just because it’s #400. For 100, Horikoshi ended the chapter with Mei’s boobs in Izuku’s face. For 200, we got Momo vs Kendo in the joint training exercise. And for 300, we got Rei showing up in Enji’s hospital room (but any conversation she had with Shoto, Fuyumi, and Natsuo was off-screened). All three of these “big number” chapters were most notable as transitions between hype moments.

My Hero Academia: Loving our Enemies
1 Timothy 2:3-4 “This is good, and it is acceptable in the sight of God our Savior, who desires all men to be saved and come to the knowledge of the truth.”
First, disclaimers:
As of January 2023, My Hero Academia is an incomplete work so I can’t comment on the series as a whole.
While I would recommend it if you like typical shounen stories, the series might scare off some readers because it isn’t super short.
And of course, there will be spoilers (for things mentioned up to chapter 326).
Second, a quick summary (if you’ve seen the series jump to 3):
My Hero Academia (MHA), takes place in a world where 80% of people have a genetic mutation called a “quirk”. Think of this as X-Men but not as secret. With such a high percentage of the population there’s everything from simple quirks, like super speed, all the way to complex quirks, like being able to steal or transplant the quirk of someone else.
It goes without saying then that “superheroes” have become a normal part of life simply because villains are a part of life. Within Japan, the superhero “All Might” is #1. He’s pretty much the perfect hero. He smiles, laughs, always saves everyone, and always defeats the bad guys. But there’s one problem: he’s dying. That’s where our quirkless main character Deku comes in. He’s a big fan of All Might, and after All Might witnesses Deku rush to protect someone despite being quirkless, he passes on his quirk to Deku. With his super strength no longer putting strain on his body, he can live a little longer and coach Deku in how to use his new power. Now that he has a quirk Deku can attend the esteemed U.A. Hero Academy and start down the path to becoming a professional hero.
What I like about MHA is that it’s not simply “here’s a villain doing bad stuff now stop him”. One of the recurring themes is how the hero system itself isn’t perfect. There are many people who become heroes because it pays well and the public likes you. Afterall, if there’s a real bad villain then someone like All Might will take care of him. Since the series pretty much begins with All Might losing his strength and passing on his power it quickly sets itself up for this peaceful bubble to be popped.
Tumblr media
With All Might gone and retired, even with a surplus of professional heroes, the general public no longer feels safe…
Third, what’s this about?
I think a major turning point for MHA is season 5 (late 200’s in manga). The heroes’ organization has just pulled a massive operation against our “bad guys” and lots of things go wrong. Multiple cities end up demolished, many top heroes are killed or severely injured, and a scandal breaks that the new #1 hero “Endeavor” abused his family in his struggle to climb the ranks.
In the aftermath, we watch Deku’s classmates carryout search and rescue operations in a city that’s been destroyed. It’s here we get a scene of a hero just standing still while everyone is running around. He’s in shock that something this terrible could have happened and he mutters a line that sums up the underlying problem: “I need to find a new line of work.”
For this man “hero” was a profession, a career. It was something you were on and off the clock for, that you got paid for, that you could joke about and complain about with on people on the job just like any other job you might have. But being virtuous isn’t an exterior role for us; it’s an interior disposition which informs all our actions – whether we’re on or off the clock.
Unfortunately, this one example isn’t the minority. Over the course of the series, we’ve seen too many people that treat being a hero just like a regular job. Case in point, after this operation many heroes resign/retire and are viewed as quitters by the common folk who now take policing into their own hands.
Tumblr media
Overwhelmed by the chaos, a hero stands paralyzed amidst cries for help.
So where does the series go from here?
We might think a typical answer to such a societal problem would be for the “good guys” to preach a “do good deeds even if they’re difficult and no one thanks you” attitude. In all fairness, My Hero Academia probably falls into this mentality a few times. But I do think the show sometimes goes beyond this by answering the question “why do we continue in the face of difficulty?” MHA doesn’t always make this question explicit, but what we see is that everyone is worth saving because everyone has inherent worth and dignity as a person.
Related to this is another theme that runs in the background of MHA: how do we treat villains? Do we capture and restrain them, or eliminate them? And who is the one to judge which course of action is taken?
Take for example the character Lady Nagant, a hero whose quirk allows her to be a deadly sniper. As a professional hero she was tasked by the Public Safety Commission to take care of loose ends and cover up the choices made by the Commission that they didn’t want the public to know about. She eventually snaps under the stress of living a double life to the public and kills her commanding officer in an attempt to get out of the system. She ends up going to prison only to be freed years later by our “big bad guys” who enlist her help in capturing our main character Deku.
Tumblr media
Samaritans and Jews were sworn enemies, yet this man goes out of his way to save a man he had no connection to.
Painting by Eugène Delacroix
Are you going to make your point already?
Yes, I am. To do that I want to look closely at the fight between Deku and Lady Nagant. On one hand it’s very cliché but that also makes it easy to understand because we’re pitting two stereotypes against each other: the calloused veteran Lady Nagant who’s seen the dark side of hero work and wants to destroy the system vs. the young idealistic student Deku who wants to be a symbol of justice and peace just like All Might. Obviously Nagant can see her past self in Deku and that causes her to scorn him all the more.
Towards the end of their battle – when she is almost within Deku’s reach – she fires her rifle at an incapacitated villain nearby, thinking Deku will hesitate between choosing to save him or letting him get shot and this will give her enough time to escape. However, Deku doesn’t miss a beat. Not only does he not hesitate in choosing to protect this incapacitated villain, but because of this he’s able to pull him out of the bullet’s path, and wait there’s more! He then immediately jumps back to grab hold of Lady Nagant who in escaping lost her balance and was in a free fall. Even if she was just trying to kill him, Deku has a desire to save anyone he can.
Tumblr media
Fourth, that’s great but isn’t this a Catholic blog?
It is, and here’s the point. Remember when Jesus says “love your enemies, and do good and lend, expecting nothing in return” (Lk 6:35). Deku is someone who does not hesitate to love his enemies. He saves people not because it’s his job, but because he wants to save as many as he can; and he’s not going to let anyone tell him he can’t. In comparison to those who are simply heroes for a job, Deku is the real deal. This is why when Lady Nagant witnesses his lack of hesitation to save not only a bystander but also herself, she has a conversion. She realizes that there are indeed people who aren’t just doing this for a job but who honestly want to help everyone they meet. Why is Deku’s behavior either so inspiring or so infuriating? Because, as our opening verse points out to us, the desire to save is a very Godlike desire.
But we can ask the question: is this realistic behavior? Is Deku simply an ideal but ultimately unrealistic character? Or is his behavior something we could actually do? And if so, what has to happen for someone to get to Deku’s point?
I think our way into answering this comes from Genesis 1:26 “Then God said, ‘Let us make man in our image, after our likeness’”. We obviously aren’t God, and we don’t ever become God, but we are made in His image, and we can become His sons. The result is that through Jesus Christ and being filled with the Holy Spirit we can do Godlike things. This establishes two things that I alluded to earlier in section three:
Every human person has an inherently dignity or value being made in God’s image
As sons and daughters of God we learn to see as God sees, to rejoice in what God rejoices in, and to love as God loves.
If you haven’t read C.S. Lewis’ The Weight of Glory, take some time to read it over. Lewis has a great way of getting us to see the eternal value of our neighbors around us – and not just those we like but everyone!
Tumblr media
Lady Nagant can’t help but be struck by Deku’s truly heroic actions
Fifth, God desires all men to be saved
WE ANSWERED THE QUESTION!
We see then that Deku’s attitude is not just a nice ideal in a story but a real disposition we can and have begun through Baptism into Christ Jesus. But I know from my own history that I’m not perfect, and that I fail to love my enemies as Jesus instructed us. So how do I change? If we’ve established the foundation, how do we reach the level of love of a “true hero”?
We can start with very simple actions. I myself like the example of St. Therese of Lisieux. Whenever one of the other sisters in the convent would get on her nerves, she would picture Jesus in their place. If someone was making a lot of noise in the church, she would offer it as a song to God. For myself – believe it or not – I run into a decent amount of people who don’t like anime. But I know they like a lot of things that I don’t really like and so I thank God that there’s someone who is able to appreciate His creation in a different way than myself.
But people who annoy us or who disagree with us aren’t necessarily our enemies. What about people that actually hate us? Keeping in mind the fact that God desires all men to be saved I think of 2 points.
First, while we still breathe, there is always time to repent. This is true for us and our persecutors. Lady Nagant had turned her back on the hero society, been imprisoned, and was hunting down Deku to help capsize what remained of the hero society, and yet she was able to have a conversion before dying precisely because Deku loved his enemy. This is also why, like Deku, we must not hesitate in our evangelizing efforts to all people. Because once we pass from this life, there is no more chance for conversion.
Second, for those actively persecuting us, what do we do? We don’t have quirks like the characters is MHA that allow us to “fight back”. But we do have something much more effective. Here again I’ll refer to St. Therese: “it is prayer, it is sacrifice which give me all my strength; these are the invincible weapons which Jesus has given me.”
Tumblr media
Prayer is not magic, but it is effective. Prayer is not just words. It is action. And if it is authentic, it will be invincible in the end. Our Lord prayed in Gethsemane for the strength to endure the way of the cross that lay before Him. Think also of the first 300 years of Christianity and of all those being persecuting for following the way of Jesus who prayed for their persecutors. It wasn’t magic, it was prayer and it was effective.
If I can put forward a final, more recent, example I would use the pro-life movement within the United States. The overturning of Roe v. Wade can only be understood within the context of the ceaseless prayers, vigils, fasts, marches, rallies, etc. of pro-life supporters. These are our invincible weapons, and we do not use them only for earthly justice to be satisfied but because we desire all men to be saved, not just those who pray and march with us but for all the doctors and women and men who have promoted the contraception, abortion, and pornography industries. They too can have a conversion away from the culture of convenience and towards the full knowledge of the truth that we are made in God’s image.

Chapter 2 of my swarm in Mha fic below!

Thirteen years later finds Sarah and Momo locked in a heated battle during one of their Saturday sparring matches as they train for UA.
Sarah ducks under Momo's punch as she throws a jab into the taller girls stomach before sliding around behind and kicking out her knee to throw Momo to the floor. Slamming her bone-wings into the mat around Momo and locking her in place as she gets Momo into a headlock. "Yield!"
Momo struggles for another moment, trying to break the headlock or toss Sarah off of her before tapping the mat three times. "Damnit Sarah, I'll beat you one of these days."
Sarah scoffs as she lets momo up. "You say that like you don't have me beat at any range over 5 meters."
"That's because we don't use your swarm in spars and you know it, those hydralisks you made would snipe me from 200 meters."
Sarah shrugs. "Sure, but I don't want to be reliant on just the swarm for resolving fights." Sarah lays back on the mat. "I think we should get you some support gear for your longer range fights, maybe a sniper rifle?"
Momo shivers as she drinks from her water. "My dad mentioned recruiting a support specialist from I-island for some assistance. Apparently he got a call from one of his old contacts on the island who said she was going to work on applying to UA next year and needed a place to stay while attending. Dad being Dad invited her to stay here in exchange for helping us with our gear."
"Oooh, what's their name? Anyone we know?"
A smug smile spreads across Momo’s face. "Melissa shield."
Sarah gasps and tackles Momo. "No way! She's a support gear celebrity!" Sarah squeals as she settles on her friend. "Momo this is huge, we're going to be so set up for UA they won't know what hit them."
Momo wheezes as Sarah lays on top of her. "Sarah, Babe, best friend. Get the fuck off of me."
"Oh, right yeah. Sorry." Sarah rolls off of her, letting her tail catch her as she splays her wings out behind herself, resting her head on her arm. "Not sure I'll ever get used to being like twice as dense as you, and that's saying something miss 'high density fat cells for her quirk'." Sarah sighs, letting her wings flop to the ground.
"You say that like your torso being immune to small arms fire isn't a good thing." Momo looks thoughtful. "Maybe Melissa could make body armor similar to your carapace."
Sarah sighs dreamily, red dusting her cheeks. "Must you tease me with my celebrity crush?"
Momo giggles as she sits up patting Sarah's thigh. "At least you're wearing clothes nowadays."
"It was one time! I was four!" Sarah gasps in indignant shock. She quickly summons and throws a larva at Momo before rolling onto her stomach and burning her head. "My friend is so mean to me, woe is me. How will I ever recover?"
Momo catches the larva and stands before lightly kicking her friend while she's down. "Yes yes, poor pitiful Sarah, woe be upon you with your adorable swarm and powerful mutations."
Sarah pops up and grabs her larva back from Momo. "Whatever madam 'I can make any inorganic item I want and could break the economy in minutes with a big lunch.'"
The girls stare each other down for a moment before breaking out in giggles and heading towards the gym showers to get out of their workout gear. Sarah sets the larva down and instructs it to morph into raptorlings as she gets out of her gym clothes to grab a quick shower. "Guard the doors you two." She pets the raptors as she heads to the shower.
As Sarah exits the shower area and wraps up in a towel to get dried off and dressed again she asks Momo. "Is your dad setting Melissa up with a workshop while she's here?"
Momo sits wrapped in her towel to brush out her hair. "Yeah, he's planning on setting up a workshop out back near your field since there's plenty of space for her to test out some of her inventions."
"Cool." Sarah runs a towel through her hair spines. "So I was talking with mom the other day and we figured out that my hair is a more limited version of her quirks mutation. So my hair isn't just freaky tentacles, they're actually psionic antennae."
"Oooh, so can you do your mom's jedi mind trick too?"
"Nah, the most I can do is read surface level thoughts and send a few sentences, but it gives me a headache since I'm not super used to it yet."
"Very cool. You know that sometimes it feels like your parents are a wild quirk marriage since your quirk is bullshit."
"I mean, yeah their quirks are super compatible, but they also love the heck out of each other. Just be glad you don't see them get all lovey dovey all the time, it's a wonder I don't have a younger sibling sometimes."
"Okay, moving on because I don't need to hear about any of our parents bedroom lives, thanks Sarah." She throws a smaller towel at her face. "Did you ever figure out that larva spawning creature?"
Sarah wipes the towel off her face and grabs one of her larger scrunchies her mom got her. "Yeah, I can show you later, but I think I'll call them queens, since they spawn other stuff, and the foods they're from are super weird."
"What'd you use to make them?"
Sarah gives a half grimace. "They're a mix of gator, lizard and eel. And they make this purplish mucus stuff that is just creepy to look at, but it seems to make the larva happy so I guess we're keeping it."
"Any supply issues?" Momo ties her hair back with a ribbon as they both stand to get dressed. "You were at 10 last month right?"
Sarah pulls her jeans on, using the button at the back to secure them around her tail. "Yeah, I think I'm going to take this month and see if I can figure out something to help offload some of the supply issues, it's gotta be possible since octopuses have that whole decentralized nervous system thing. So I'm hoping I can mix that and something that can burrow to hide or maybe something armored so they are harder to take out."
"Sounds fun! We can do sushi and you can try a shellfish that might do it? Maybe lobster?" Momo's musing on food are broken by her stomach rumbling. "Maybe soon I guess, I'll text the sushi chef real quick and we can eat dinner in the dining area." As they leave Sarah mentally directs the 'lings off towards the field.
After lunch Sarah and momo split off to practice their quirks, Sitting down near her field and beginning to channel her essences from her recent meal.
'So if I twist the octopus and lobster along with some of the essences from the egg in the rice…' As the strands twist and change shape, eventually she winds them into a central mass with twisting appendages that tie together in a brain-shaped husk covered in shell like chitin. 'That doesn't look too bad, let's see how it functions.'
Summoning the new creature type into the field, she sees as it rapidly grows to about two meters around and about one meter above the ground while she can tell it has spread further below ground. The slight weight along her mental shoulders lessens as it reaches its full size and she can feel it growing slightly lighter. 'Seems like that worked, let's do some tests on how many that gets me up to before I see about creating more of them.'
A few minutes later, Sarah gets up to a new maximum of 18 sets of 'lings along with her new creature. 'Seems like that each one gets me another 8 supply of creatures, let's try making another one before I figure out a name for them.' As the second one grows to its full size Sarah feels the limit reach higher again before a twinge of hunger flashes over her.
A desire to consume any and all food nearby builds at the back of her mind, easily suppressed at its current level, but a concern to be aware of for a higher supply limit. As she dismisses several of her 'lings she feels the desire lessen but remains lightly at the back of her mind.
'Okay, so I can go above my normal supply with them, but I'll need to be careful about that.' Standing and walking near the central mass of the first one she summoned, she snaps a selfie and sends it over to Momo.
Shortly after, her phone rings with Momo's contact. Momo's voice rings out as she answers. "Sarah why does it look like you're posing near a brain?"
"Hey Momo, the look super weird but the octopus and lobster worked for the supply increasing idea. Also there's possibly maybe slightly an issue with going too high over my limit."
Momo takes note of Sarah's waffling in her response. "Uh-huh, you going to go all 'queen of blades and her murder swarm' on us?"
Sarah blushes, embarrassed over the idea. "Look, we were six, we were playing heroes and villains and my mutations make me look like a great villain, okay?"
Momo steamrolls over her blustering. "Yeah, and you know I'd be with you if you take over the world, right?" Momo hmms as Sarah sputters on the other end of the line. "Anyway, what's the issue with going over your limit?"
Sarah sighs. "The issue would be that I could lose control of the swarm, they go rampant and devour all life on the planet or in the galaxy?"
"So you figured out space travel then?"
"Momo I'm being serious!"
"Yeah, but I trust you not to go over your limits to that extent and if you do I promise I'll stop you before you destroy the world, okay?"
"Okay" a soft smile finds its way onto Sarah's face. "Anyway, I'm thinking cerebrate for the name on them since they're kinda brain looking, what do you think?"
"Yeah that fits from the photo you sent. How much do they help?"
"With just one I can get up to 36 raptorlings out before hitting my limit and that whole hunger thing becomes a bit worse if I go for a second cerebrate."
"Daaaang gurl, the villains won't know what hit them. Seriously though, If you ever go villain you better have me on your side."
Sarah sputters again. "M-Momo no, I'm not going to be a villain."
"I don't know, if something ended up sending you down that path it'd have to be super messed up."
A heavy sigh comes across the line to Momo. "I promise Momo, if I go villain, you'll be invited."
"Great! Anyway, I figured out how to swap metals during the creation process from a blueprint, now I can use tungsten on my staffs."
"That's awesome Momo!" Sarah lays down on her nearby hammock, letting her wings wrap around herself and her tail flop to the side. "Think you'll start gold plating your weapons too? Maybe golden brass knuckles?"
"Maybe, I was thinking of trying to use more titanium and heavier metals like tungsten in my tools now that I can swap them in a bit easier." A similar flopping sound can be heard from Momo's end of the phone as she settles onto her couch in her training room. "I'm going to definitely have to work with Melissa when she gets here. Hopefully we can come up with some neat ideas using my quirk for quick prototyping."
"Ahh, I almost forgot she's coming here. Do you know when she'll arrive?"
Momo hmms. "Dad was pretty vague on it, but hopefully she has some time to settle in before her exams for UA."
"Agreed, celebrity crush or not, the practical exams are no joke for UA. I'm sure she has the written exams in the bag though, coming from I-Island and all."
–Sarah's swarm compendium–
Raptorling: a swarm essence created through manipulation of chicken, lizard and small quantities of dog essences. These four legged creatures have large wings along their back haunches allowing for rapid elevation changes including jumping up and down cliff edges. Their sharp mandibles at their jaw allow them to rapidly tear through many materials with assistance from two spiked claws along their front shoulder joints while stationary.
Their powerful musculature allows them to rapidly close in on a target, while their moderate armor can stop small arms fire with ease. Once Sarah began using larva for spawning her swarm units it was discovered that these raptorlings can be summoned in pairs while only taking a single supply per pair, allowing for rapid force multiplication among quick engagements with their rapid breeding pace. Their powerful quadriceps allow them to rapidly leap at a target from up to 10 meters away.
Raptorlings embody what the swarm means to both Sarah Kerrigan and her enemies as their large groups of attackers, ranging from dozens to a hundred in her pro hero years. Raptorlings attack quickly, move even faster, and scout through streets in packs as small as twos while providing information back to Sarah.
Few weaknesses are known about swarm units, though it is known among Sarah's friends that her raptorlings are allergic to lemon juice due to their odd makeup.
