The Rules

1: unless tagged #spoilers, any novel I post will not contain plot spoilers but may contain vibe spoilers or allusion to events; I may talk about what the story is About that the dust jacket or my own synopsis may not make obvious but I won't tell you who killed somebody or a cool twist

2: I'd I post a book here it is because I finished it and liked it, OR I finished it and need to untangle why I didn't. Novels I simply don't enjoy I don't finish anymore, as a rule, but I may break it if something about it compels me to finish it. I've only had to do it twice in the last year, but both novels were so antithetical to my enjoyment that it made me actually feel mad about trying to read them.

3: I'm not gonna rate them. I don't like ratings systems, I'm not gonna try to hammer something into a number, and forcing it is just going to be dumb. I did think about making a 7 point criteria list that if a novel met it I would declare perfect, but that's too much work. Maybe in a lull of books or something I'll hammer one out. If I do, one point will be "did it contain a character wielding a sword flicking the blood from their blade before sheathing it?"

4: no rereads. I have a bad habit of returning to old books series when I have so many books that interest me that I'd like to break, so for 2024 unless I need to for something wild like a series entry I'm not expecting, no rereads.

5: There's gonna be some nonfiction in here. I've got a couple of things at the top of my to-read list that are political or social in nature, but if you're following me or reading these you probably can attune yourself to my political stances to know what's up pretty quickly. That said, I'm gonna talk about social shit occasionally even outside of those, so idk if that's a big deal but, yknow.

NEW -Photographer (to me)

In carrying out an internet search for new photographers, I was quite surprised (maybe I shouldn’t have been?) about the number of times particular photographers’ names crop up time and again across a number of genres of photography, e.g. portrait and self-portrait photography, contemporary photographers, etc. Cindy Sherman has come up in at least three different searches I’ve carried out, this time named in Elena Martinique’s Widewalls article of May 15 2016, entitled “These are the Ten of the Best Portrait Photographers Today”.

Along with Cindy Sherman, another notable artist Sally Mann was included in that list as well as possibly lesser known photographers such as Danny Lyon, Philip Lorca DiCorcia and Larry Fink. I say possibly lesser known, but I honestly have no idea if that comment has any validity whatsoever. I have recently started to try to learn about photography and photographers: I have no concept of how much I don’t know. I had previously heard of Cindy Sherman only because she was one of the photographers whose works were being exhibited at the Edinburgh Stills gallery and visited by the HND students. So by rights I could pick just about any of the above photographers to write about, as they are all “New” to me.

The Widewalls article described Philip-Lorca diCorcia as a “cinematic” photographer, which intrigued me from the outset. I have enjoyed so many movies’ cinematography that just looks to have been shot by a photographer’s eye. (For me, the most recent outstanding example has to be “Roma”, directed by Alfonso Cuaron).

The photograph by diCorcia presented in the article that interested me is shown below.

The image to me appears both staged and natural at the same time. I’d certainly go along with the “cinematic” description, as it could easily be a still from a movie, and there is a story to be told. (What’s a black guy doing shirtless in a supermarket shopping mall car park? (Reminded me of Michael Douglas’ character in the film “Falling Down”, after he “lost it”). The scene is lit from high-up on the right hand side of the photograph, and could be (but probably isn’t!) just lit by the parking lot streetlamp.

The Widewalls article gave quite a lot of detail about Philip Lorca DiCorcia and noted that he is renowned “for his evocative photographs of figures and street scenes, which combine both documentary and conceptual elements of photography”. He was born in 1951, in Hartford, Connecticut, in the USA, and studied photography at the University of Hartford in the 1970s, and later at Boston’s School of the Museum of Fine Arts. He then studied at Yale University and in 1979, attained his Master of Fine Art degree in photography. At Yale, diCorcia photographed friends and family in shots that appear completely candid, but in actuality involved hours of staging and elaborate lighting techniques to blur the lines between the everyday and the fabricated.

In later works, according to the website https://www.famousphotographers.net, he started taking pictures of random individuals in urban places worldwide, such as Calcutta, New York, Tokyo, Rome, Hollywood and Berlin. He often hid the lights in the roadway to illuminate a subject in a unique way, separating them from other street people. He then captured accidental poses, unintended facial expressions and movements, with a sense of drama. he photographed crowds on the streets of cities, from New York and Paris to Tokyo, placing flashbulbs at several places around a site and then waiting for the ideal moment to capture a photograph of an unknowing group, again mixing artificiality and theatricality with the spontaneous and candid. In recent series, he has focused on subjects ranging from pole dancers to New York’s urban metropolis, examining constructions of identity, reality, and artifice in his work.

After searching out the “Philip Lorca DiCorcia” book of his works in CoGC library (published by Kerber Photo Art), I was surprised to see the above photograph that had initially intrigued me reproduced as part of the artist’s “Hustler” series, where each photograph was accompanied by the subject’s name, age, hometown and a sum of money listed (somewhere between $20-$50). Interestingly, the Widewalls and the Famousphotographers websites differ on their description of what this sum of money is – in the former, it’s the money DiCorcia paid the subject to pose for him, but in the latter, it’s what each subject charges, working a male prostitute, to “turn a trick”. I had a mental shift on reading this – my cinematic reference of “Falling Down” sheared to “Midnight Cowboy” one of the all-time cinema classics directed by John Schlesinger in his first US movie after moving there from Europe in the 1960s.

The subject matter in this series is bleak, and could be described as gritty realism at its grittiest. In 1989, Philip-Lorca diCorcia started to work on his project, Hustlers, with the help of $45,000 fellowship granted to him by National Endowment for the Arts. The series was shot between 1990 and 1992, during several visits to Los Angeles five times in order to photograph Hollywood male escorts. Initially, he took pictures of the male prostitutes inside motels, and later he moved the setting to streets. In 1993, 25 photos from this project were exhibited at the Museum of Modern Art (Manhattan, New York).

I’m not sure what to make of diCorcia’s above choice of subject matter- is it some form of social commentary? (would these guys do what they do if they could get a job that would allow them to live more conventional lives) – is it a chronicle of the underbelly of society, or a chronicle of failed Hollywood dreams (did these guys want to be actors?). The movie “Midnight Cowboy” was a fiction, and the viewer could ultimately take comfort in that, but diCorcia’s work offers no such refuge.

DiCorcia is the recipient of a Guggenheim Fellowship, among other honors, and has held solo exhibitions at The Museum of Modern Art in New York, the Centre National de la Photographie in Paris, and the Reina Sofía in Madrid.

In addition to pursuing his own work, diCorcia worked as a commercial photographer throughout the 1980s, creating spreads for publications including Esquire, The New York Times Magazine, and Harper’s Bazaar.

Daveed Diggs & More Set for Second Edition of 24 Hour Plays' Viral Monologues Initiative

On the heels of last week's talent-packed inaugural edition of Viral Monologues, a starry lineup of talent has been announced to take part in a second edition of the new program which features performances released digitally on the Instagram video application IGTV. The series is an initiative of The 24 Hour Plays.

Performers taking part this week include Daveed Diggs, Coral Peña, Kelly Aucoin, Nicholas Braun, Michael Shannon, Ashley Fink, Jessica St. Clair, Juliana Canfield, Anna Baryshnikov, Marylouise Burke, William Jackson Harper, Ryan Haddad, Clark Gregg, Daniel K. Last night at 6:00pm, 24 actors shared brief orientation-style videos to allow the writers to get to know them better. By 7:00pm, writers and actors were paired, and writers got to work on crafting new monologues especially for their assigned actors. Actors received their monologues this morning at 10am, are filming their performances throughout the day, and at 6:00pm their videos begin to be released to the world, completing the 24-hour cycle.

Being pregnant again was not on Vicki Vale's agenda, not when she's raising five boys and has to take care of her sister's children that she bas to take care of. Trying to keep the pregnancy from the father of her child, Bruce Wayne, wont be easy when she has to interview him at a charity event. But when she throw ups on Jack Ryder's shoes while in mid conversation, there's not much left to hiding it now.
