S1E04: Teacher’s Pet

Xander’s obvious dream sequence becomes apparent after he saves Buffy from a vamp, performs a guitar solo, and has every intention of kissing her like she’s never been kissed before. Cueing the catalyst for this episode; male infatuation with the opposite sex.

This infatuation will be the downfall of a few as the new substitute teacher Ms. French takes over from the now headless former science teacher Mr. Gregory. When Xander goes to Ms. French’s house for an “assignment” and doesn’t return the following day, Buffy, Willow, and Giles must save idiotic Xander from his testosterone…… and a giant praying mantis.

While this is a pretty cut and dry episode, the best parts are the interactions between Buffy and Angel, the relationship takes itty bitty steps, but it is fascinating to watch and fills us with potential happiness.

Cine: Mysterious Skin (2005)

Hutchinson, Kansas. Brian Lackey (George Webster en la versión infantil y Brady Corbet en la juvenil) y Neil McCormick (Chase Ellison y Joseph Gordon-Levitt interpretan al mismo personaje de niño y de mayor) apenas se conocen, pero un hecho significativo los conecta desde la infancia en la que compartían un lugar en el equipo infantil de béisbol.

Ambos tienen, en aquél verano de 1981, ocho años. Tras un partido finalizado abruptamente por una lluvia torrencial, Brian es descubierto solo, encerrado en un armario, con la nariz sangrando y con una amnesia de cinco horas. A todo esto, padece algunas consecuencias que no puede evitar ni dilucidar: se desmaya y orina constantemente, lo cual no despierta ninguna compasión de su padre. Y queda plenamente convencido de que ha padecido una abducción extraterrestre.

Neil tiene otra historia que contar: a esa edad, viendo a su mamá (Elisabeth Shue) teniendo sexo con un hombre, descubre su homosexualidad y es víctima del abuso de su entrenador (Bill Sage), de quien se siente atraído, aunque se considera amado por éste. Una situación terrible de la que sólo sabe su mejor amiga, Wendy (Riley McGuire/Michelle Trachtenberg) y lo arrastra a buscar ese amor en los hombres a quienes les ofrece su cuerpo por unos dólares. Ni siquiera su amigo, el también gay Eric Preston (Jeff Licon), conoce su trágico pasado.

Gregg Araki dirigió y adaptó la novela homónima de Scott Heim, logrando uno de esos hitos narrativos que el cine de temática LGBTQ de vez en cuando nos regala con notable fuerza. Una historia lacerante sobre la inmensa tragedia que el abuso sexual ocasiona sobre los inocentes, en especial frente a la negligencia filial. Imprescindible.

S1E02: The Harvest

Episode 2 commences and as Luke is going in for the kill, but he places his hand on Buffy’s chest which coincidentally has the cross adorning it from “a friend”. Thus, resulting in a rather simple escape that is the opening 15 seconds of the episode, thankfully even back in TV days, the first two eps aired back-to-back.

Getting to hear Giles explain how vampires came to be is something that is lacking from practically any vamp film/show, which automatically raises this shows excellence and Giles’ bad-ass-ness. Willow shows hers when Cordelia is, well, Cordelia, but Willow still informs her that to save her computer project she needs to press “deliver”, which we all know what the abbreviation of that would be and also what it would actually do. #bestillmynerdheart

The Harvest, as it turns out, is the process to allow The Master to be freed from his subterranean prison, and to stop this, Buffy needs to kill a vampire with what can only be described as the Mercedes logo on his forehead.

As we will come to realise, Buffy gets the job done and stops The Harvest, and the episode concludes with Giles reminding our beloved teens that this will not be the last time that this will happen and that they should be prepared for more to come, in true teenage fashion they wave it off and walk off talking about how their lives could REALLY end, and with that Giles says to himself “the earth is doomed”.

Richie Rich’s Christmas Wish (1998)

It never fails. Whenever a property has no idea what to do ‘round Christmas time, it always resorts to ripping off It’s a Wonderful Life, or A Christmas Carol. I’m an adult, watching Richie Rich’s Christmas Wish years after it was released but I’d bet every present underneath my tree that no kid who saw this film in 1998 liked it.

After Richie Rich (played by David Gallagher this time) is led to believe by his supervillain-esque cousin Reggie Van Dough (Jake Richardson) that he ruined Christmas, the richest boy in the world wishes he was never born. Thanks to Professor Keanbean (Eugene Levy) and his latest invention, his wish comes true!

You can predict every beat of this story because you've literally seen it a thousand times. This may be the crappiest, most unimaginative ripoff of It’s a Wonderful Life I’ve ever encountered. Even if you can imagine a world in which either a) the Frank Capra classic doesn’t exist or b) Richie hasn’t seen it, the character and the story are poorly written. Over, and over, and over, and over he attempts to explain to people who no longer know him who he is, that he is the heir to the Rich fortune, that this world is not the way it should be, etc. It’s hard to see the appeal of Richie Rich. All of his problems seem trivial compared to ours. When you also make dumber than a sack of pennies, he becomes so unlikable the only way to make the audience cheer him on… is to create a villain so outlandish you can’t take anything seriously. You thought Hill Valley had it bad when Biff took over the town in Back to the Future Part 2? At least the man didn’t have the power to set people’s bail at whatever he wanted or cancel Christmas!

It's almost comical to see a film about the richest boy in the world made so cheaply. No one on the production team must've ever touched or seen snow. It’s as green as summer in the tropics… except for some cotton spread out here and there, and a few key branches. Those poor child actors must’ve been dying inside their snowsuits! Then, we get to the CG, which is just a notch above the quality that we see in today’s Asylum films. It’s 1998, also direct-to-video, but come on. How expensive can it be to blow up a sled? I’ll do it for free!

The people in charge must not have cared, at all. In the “real” world, Richie notices that his butler, Herbert Cadbury (Keene Curtis) has a tattoo on his leg. Using your dummy detective skills, you immediately realize that, in this alternate reality, Cadbury will still be a musician, that this is how the two of them will meet. Unfortunately, what are the odds the world-famous band will be performing on Christmas Eve in the apocalyptic wasteland that is the Reggie-owned Richville? I could go on and on at all of the plot holes and coincidences, but do any of them matter? This is the kind of VHS garbage that screams “Hold on! It’s gonna be a stinky ride!” within seconds. This has been a rough day. Between this, the Christmas-themed episode of “Back to the Future: The Animated Series” where they travel back to the time of Charles Dickens to re-create A Christmas Carol and Silent Night, Deadly Night Part 2, it’s enough to make you wish you had died in a fiery wreck that morning instead of getting up to watch movies with your friends.
