Mid90s gang reacting to reader writing a book about them and their friendship and reader wins a writing contest!!
- ♣️ (I'm giving you fluff okay I've decided I've tortured you enough with angst 🙄)
LMFAO YES YOU HAVE and I've been procrastinating those oneshots you sent me 💀💀
MID90S ; writer
includes ; fuckshit, ray, fourthgrade, ruben (platonic), & stevie (platonic)
warnings ; language, mentions of alcohol and drugs
masterlist
Tumblr media
FUCKSHIT
you were no writer what-so-fucking-ever
while high, he dared you to enter some writing contest for school
"how funny would it be if some random junior won?"
honestly it would be funny, considering you're not a writer, you're a skater
you entered just for the fun of it, plus you had a great chance at beating some of the other contestants because you knew their writing was shit
you didn't even know what to write for the first two weeks
then it popped up in your head, like holy shit it was so obvious
you decided to write about yours and fuckshits long friendship history
from how you met, to your nicknames and to your other friends
let's just say, other than the profanity, the judges/senior english teachers loved it
you wrote like a whole motherfucking novel too
you got second place, considering they'd be in trouble for awarding a book with so much inappropriate content with first
plus the person who won first definitely deserved it
teachers were literally suggesting you publish the fuckin thing too like calm down ⁉️⁉️
fuckshit was too lazy to read it at first, but once you told him it was about you two and that you won second place? nah reading that was all he did
I honestly hc that he's a little dyslexic so he was struggling a little bit
but he loved it, it was genuinely moving to him and its literally about him
brought him to tears that he tried to hide
which he did to help his fragile ego by hugging you and hiding his face in your shoulder
genuinley so grateful for you
RAY
you were kinda iffy with writing
but once you saw the amount of money you could get from winning...?
shit sign me up
a thousand dollars to win first off of something you wrote? okay let's go LMAO
you didn't know what to write about because it's not like there was a given prompt so you just kinda spilled out stories and shit about you and ray
you made sure to leave out all the drugs and shit because you weren't gonna try and get in trouble LMAO honestly real
the judges loved it though
it was about 104 pages, so you made the actual like minimum, which was 80 pages
but thankfully for you, quantity doesn't equal quality
you actually got third surprisingly
that's still 400 dollars though
you didn't actually tell Ray or the others about you joining that contest so when you walked in with 400 dollars, a smile on your face and your skateboard and 52 sheets of notebook paper connected by a keyring under your arm, damn
you quickly explained and set your stuff down and Ray just scooped you up and spun you around while he hugged you
he's a simpleton but you got him giggling and shit okay??
genuinley so flustered that you wrote about you and him of all people like huh
he reads it front to back at least 3 times
FOURTHGRADE
you were pretty passionate about writing
so when your school was promoting a novel contest you knew you had to join
a thousand dollars would've done you a lot
you spent the next six months writing about you and fourthgrade, stories, how you met, favorite memories, random blurbs, etcetera
you told him about it but never that you were writing about him
you wanted it to be a surprise lmao
i also hc that he's a little dyslexic so 💀
you actually won too
apparently it was so "inspiring and moving amongst the youths" that you won ONE THOUSAND DOLLARS for it, IN CASH
you sprinted over to Motorz and immediately wrapped fourthgrade in a hug
"thanks for being such great inspiration"
"huh?"
you genuinley just retold some of his camcorder tapes for a bit of the book too so you had to give him some credit
you gave him 200 dollars because he refused to take any more
the duo
RUBEN
bro couldn't care less that you joined a writing competition
"whatever you want"
you have the annoying sibling dynamic what can I say
"dude I'll give you 100 bucks if you just be supportive"
"fine"
you wrote about him and your awesome sibling relationship
you made sure to cut out all the abuse and just say "growing up in a rough household" and "growing up not as privileged as everyone else" and shit bc you weren't getting cps called on anyone
you wrote like 70 pages
you got third
but you got 200 dollars so you basically split it with him
he ended up reading it because he was bored at motorz one night and you left it laying around
he's never smiled while crying before
you come in the next morning and he just silently hugs you
you see the book thing on the couch where he slept and you just kinda knew
"why are you crying?"
"i'm not!"
STEVIE
you also have a very sibling like dynamic
although instead of annoying each other you're kind of the comfort siblings you've both never had
so when you brought up the fact you joined a writing competition because you had a good chance at winning, he was like "oh cool"
"i'm writing about you"
"what the fuck why?"
he's supportive tho
he'll ask how it's going and stuff and you'll just give a vague answer
by the time they're due and judged, he asks what you placed
you shrug and pull out a thousand dollars cash from your backpack with a smile
"holy shit!"
you smile and hand him half of it
he's confused as to why but accepts it graciously
I mean half of its about him so he deserves some credit
gives you a little hug and shit

ˏˋ°•*⁀➷ 𝐇𝐄𝐀𝐃𝐂𝐀𝐍𝐎𝐍 #𝟑 : 𝐑𝐀𝐘 𝐃𝐀𝐓𝐈𝐍𝐆 𝐇𝐄𝐀𝐃𝐂𝐀𝐍𝐎𝐍𝐒
•okay so i strongly believe that ray is either a soft dom, or a very huge sub. like there's no in between, he is not a switch so you'll have to pick for yourself
•literally so mature. you guys argue like grown adults fr. you don't yell at each other, and the arguments are normally resolved super quick. also, if you want space he completely understands and doesn't question
•he's such an angel to be with. he's a 4lifer he has ur back. someone makes you uncomfortable? he'll tell them off. you want him to do something for you? say less. princess treatment n shi
•random but i feel like he actually likes to drive and will drive you around unless you prefer to be driving
•he wants to be little spoon sometimes too :(
•bro does NOT tolerate any man hitting on you, (i mean as he should)
•with you guys it was definitely a best friends to lovers type thing like slow burn ig
•when it comes to intimacy, he's not super experienced so it's still a little learning curve for him
•he desperately wants to be around you all the time, but he's too mature to admit it
•i 🫶 ray

Is it okay if you do headcanons on what Ray from Mid90s would be like as an older brother, with the reader as his younger sister? I feel like he'd be the type to act like he's wayy older even though there's only a 2 year age gap
RAY X YOUNGERSISTER!READER HEADCANONS
Tumblr media
warnings: mention of underage drug use and alcohol use, canon character death
eeee i love this request
- you technically have two older brothers being the only girl out of the three total siblings
- after your twin brother died when you guys were kids, ray became even more overprotective
- you’d think he’s your dad or that you’re a baby when in reality he’s only two years older than you, but you understand why he’s overprotective so you can’t get mad at him for it
- if and when you do hang out with him and the guys, which he honestly prefers since he knows you’re safe with him, he makes sure that all of the guys are nice to you (it’s easy for fourth grade and stevie, a bit of a ‘censorship’ thing with fuckshit and ruben)
- hates when you hang around their other guy friends because he knows how they are and doesn’t want them even looking at you
- doesn’t like you tagging along to parties with him, but he’s a softie with enough begging you can sucker him into anything you want. when you’re there with him you can bet you either won’t be drinking or will only be drinking drinks he gives you
- watches you like a hawk, doesn’t matter what he’s doing he’ll always make sure you’re within his eye line
- if fuckshit tries to give you any of his adderall or other drugs he will be genuinely pissed, he already doesn’t like him giving that stuff to stevie and ruben, but you were definitely off limits
- ray is easily your number one supporter in anything you do. do sports? he’s going to every game and dragging the guys with him. same thing for music or literally any other interest. he wants to be there for you as much as he physically can
- he’s always there when you need him. your own therapist that would beat anyone’s ass for you. he actually gives the best advice ever
- his number one dream is to make it big with skating at take you with him on tour to see the world. fuckshit may be his best friend, but you’re his other half and he would have so much more fun if you were with him
- growing up he’d always do whatever you wanted even if it was embarrassing or girly, he just likes to spend time with his siblings
- unlike a lot of guys he doesn’t get annoyed or bothered by younger kids or anything, he understands what being a kid is and looking up to older kids. it’s very clear he’s empathetic and honestly flattered when it comes to you, stevie, and ruben
- ray is easily the best out of the guys to have as an older brother (ugh i love him)

I was just going through your masterlist for the twentieth time and read your “stop trying to use expelliarmus on me” blurb for Freddie. (It’s so cute btw) Would you mind doing some more headcanons for Freddie falling for a American Ilvermorny transfer student? Preferably a Fem! Reader in Ravenclaw or Slytherin. Thanks love!
i love this
i cannot express to you just how much i love this
also you can read that blurb here
ok so first and foremost
as an American Ilvermorny transfer you are going to need to get used to eVERYONE TRYING TO DO AN AMERICAN ACCENT
EVERYONE WOULD DO IT AT LEAST ONCE
alright so we are just going to say you guys met the same way you guys meet in the blurb
wait hold
could you imagine using american slang (im going to use california slang because...well...i am from california and don’t really know any other slang)
you’d say something like sick
gnarly
rad
d u d e
totally
can you tell im from the valley?
wack
“they ate shit”
stoked
clutch
bitchin’
kook
pLEASE IF YOU SAID THE WORDS JUNE GLOOM
HE’D BE SO CONFUSED
then he’d try to say it in everyday conversation but get the meaning wrong
or you’d say something and he'd just 👁👄👁
huH
“come on fred send it!”
“...send...what?”
“i-just do the prank.”
or
“yeah, i’m down.”
“down...where?”
“wha-no, i meant i wanna go.”
freddie would also have so many questions about america
about why there isnt a qUEEN for the muggles
or why you don't call them muggles
or he’d ask if the boys were cuter in america
if you jokingly said yes he’d pout then ‘kidnap’ you
meaning he’d sit on you so you couldn’t leave
“fREDDIE PLEASE YOURE HEAVY”
“no. you think im going to let you get up and ran back to those american bOYS? nope, not when you have yourself a MAN right here.”
but he’d love your accent so much
or if you aren’t from california
and have a sOUTHERN ACCENT
🥺 PLEASE THAT WOUD BE SO CUTE
HE’D MAKE YOU SAY LITTLE THINGS HERE AND THERE
AND JUST SMILE
he likes the way americans say garage
really rolls off the tongue
aw you'd take him back to america to visit sometime
and he’d be having so much fun
so confused
but so much fun
because i feel like muggles in the UK are one thing
but no-majs
are just a different breed compared to muggles
also this is the late 90′s
so
introducing him to rage against the machine
green day
tHE SKATE CULTURE OF MID TO LATE 90′S
freddie would love it
he comes back to Molly looking like an extra from the movie Mid90′s
can you guys imagine fred at the beach
pale, cute little freckly fred at the beach
i could cRY
imagine how clingy and needy and pouty he’d get if he was sunburnt
poor baby 🥺
but also seeing you in a bathing suit would drive him crazy
oK UNPOPULAR OPINION
freddie would love to hear you tell him about american history
he says its your accent that really ties it all together
ok i am feeling so nOT creative today so i am going to end it here i am so sorry
:))

ME TOO CLARI ME TOO my fav thing to do is making someone watch a film that i’ve enjoyed nd observe their reaction all the time hehehe i watch their reactions more than the actual movie pffft
moving onto ur fav film list, your fav film list made me SO happy!! i was so excited to see that most of them were films i’ve watched&wholeheartedly enjoyed ( ^ω^ ) FINALLY SOMEONE APPRECIATING THE ROYAL TENENBAUMS YES!! whenever i mention anderson everyone talks ab the grand budapest hotel so im so happy to see u enjoyed the royal tenenbaums 🥺 also omg u watched burning?!? isn’t it such an amazing film <3 also reservoir dogs and little women and spirited away and ahh i could go on and on forever ab ur list but this ask would be a whole essay so i’ll force myself to hold in cri cri
horror movies are so fascinating aren’t they!!! i love em sm too <3 ari aster n jordan peele r my fav favs when it comes to horror. +the shining and scream! i enjoyed the conjuring series as well :) wait can i drop u a rec, since u love horror i totally recommend a tale of two sisters by kim. one of my all time favs&i have a strong feeling u would love it too! that film has such beautiful cinematography as well (✿╹◡╹)
ahhh my fav films r like, all over the place cuz i don’t have a strong preference/taste, but some of my fav films (that aren’t mentioned above/in ur list) include jojo rabbit-waititi, the florida project-baker, dazed and confused-linklater, moonlight-jenkins, girl interrupted-mangold, your name-makoto, mid90s-hill, lady bird-gerwig, uncut gems-safdie and etc etc so many more but i feel like im oversharing hehehe i also love action movies too but that’s a whole different discussion ;)
honestly u can recommend me anything u want cuz my taste is all over the place like i said, but to narrow it down, hmmm 🤔 is there a movie that u think is a must-watch? or genre-wise, maybe horror/action/drama/coming of age!! love u so so much clari<33 how is tumblr allowing me to write this much huh -🐰
ehehehe okay i’m gonna answer under the cut because i knoooow i’m gonna ramble
RIGHT and like idek why i guess i just love sharing the things i love with the people i care about and observing how they feel about it???
AHAHAHA YESSSSS oh my gosh i love the royal tenenbaums so much!! like my favourite wes film is either fantastic mr fox or rushmore, but yes!! grand budapest is rly pretty tho and i think that’s why so many people gravitate towards it yk? I DID WATCH BURNING actually i was super lucky and got to watch it at TIFF before it ‘officially’ premiered + there was a lil q&a with the cast and director (w a translator ehehe) but it absolutely blew me away. i’m just in love with korean cinema as a whole. i have yet to watch a korean film that i don’t like!!
little women is just !!!!!!! i love greta so much and i can’t wait to see what else she creates; i just feel like greta is a woman director creating films FOR WOMEN. does that make sense??? well-known women directors are already so sparse, but there are some (ie bigelow) who create uhhhhhh films that cater more towards men and the masses??? and that’s not to say that bigelow isn’t a fantastic director, because she IS, but i really like sofia coppola and greta gerwig because their films are so feminine and focused on feminine issues and relationships that we really don’t see on widespread/popular screens (like at first run theatres ie multiplexes).
RESERVOIR DOGS AAAAAAAH listen listen i have A Thing for mr. blonde ehehehe yeah i really love quentin, as i mentioned. whenever someone says pulp fiction is his best film i really have to refrain from rolling my eyes, and i know that makes me sound like suuuuch a snob but like,,,,,,,,,, pulp fiction is his most popular film, not his best (in MY opinion!! since art is all personal opinion yk etc etc). and like i could go on forever about him, i love every single one of his films, i think he’s such a fantastic writer and just aaaaah <333333 love quentin’s work so so so much.
ARI ASTER AND JORDAN PEELE ARE FANTASTIC. i wrote an essay on get out and it was literally one of my favourite essays to write!! i’m really really really excited to see what both of them continue to create!! OOOOH I LOOKED IT UP AND YEAH IT LOOKS RIGHT UP MY ALLEY i will add it to the list n get back to you!!!
aaaaah ur taste!!! dw clearly my taste is all over the place too ahahaha i just love cinema so much, i’m always eager to watch new films and literally always feel overwhelmed with just how many i want to watch ehehehe. OH MY GOD YOUR NAME MADE ME SOB LIKE A BABY such a beautiful film!!!!!! loved it so so so much. eeeee i actually hate action movies ahahahaha 🙈🙈🙈
hmmm i’m gonna try n go with ‘must watch’ films just because i feel like i’ve already mentioned so many in most of those genres n you’ve already seen most of them, so!!
ladri di biciclette by de sica
masculin, feminin and pierrot le fou by godard
news from home by akerman (if you can find it, it can be a lil difficult to track down but if ur school has a decent film library/collection they should have it!!)
rome, open city by rossellini
in the mood for love by wong kar-wai
the 400 blows by truffaut
hotel by the river by hong sangsoo (i literally love this film so fucking much my gosh like another one we saw at TIFF one year and just !!!!!!!)
full metal jacket by kubrick
apocalypse now by coppola
bride of frankenstein by whale
nosferatu by murnau (honestly anything german expressionism is worth watching esp the cabinet of dr caligari and metropolis, too,, i just really love german expressionism lmaoooo)
peeping tom by powell
king kong (1933) by cooper + schoedsack
aaaah like tbh i’d be surprised if you didn’t know/watch these, too!! like, i feel like they’re fairly common in film programs but!!! recommending films to another film student is hard cause i’m sitting here like ‘well, they most likely know all of the american/hollywood ‘must watch’ films’, but then i’m all ‘but if they’re a film student, there’s a good chance they’ve watched these, too’ so aaaah idk i hope some of these are new to you, at least!!! i kinda just thought about my favourite cinema movements and picked a film or two from each ahahahaha
SORRY I WROTE U A MINI ESSAY LMAO JUST RAAAAMBLING but !!! i can’t wait to hear more about ur cinema adventures!!! lmk if you’ve seen any on the rec list omg omg and once again sorry it took me so long to finish answering this :((

hi! how’s ur day? are you still doing ships? i tried to find a post saying if you were but i couldn’t, if you are here my... application? i’m a 5,5 lil brunette, i’m bi (i’m not completely out yet) i really love making funky film type vids, there’s this movie called mid90s and at the end a character shows his short film thing. that’s what my ones look like! i have a skater girl style and i’m very sarcastic. i have one cat who i ADORE& i listen to a lot of music, (tyler, the creator)!much love🖤
“i’m bi (i’m not completely out yet)” BRUH SAME someone come tell my parents i like boys and girls pls bc i can’t
i ship you with kie!! (honorary mention: you and jj would get along like two peas in a pod, and it would annoy the shit out of kie when you two ganged up on her, but usually she’d love having you two be so close. one time you’d try to ‘cast’ him in one of your short films but it went straight to his head (“does this make me famous now?”) and it’d be the first and last time he had any involvement in your films)
you and kie would tease each other for everything. one time she’d miss a step walking out of john b’s and you’d snort at her (after making sure she was okay). “okay, wow, that was so hot.” then there’d be the time you spilled your coffee all over john b’s recliner on the porch, and she’d laugh in your face. “i think you missed your fucking mouth, babe.” she’d also end up being the main focus of a lot of your work. whether she knew you were filming her or not, she’d end up in most of the short films you ever made, whether for just a second or for the entire thing.
even more significant, i think kie’s parents would adore you. in basically all of his season one scenes we hear mr. c rashing on the boys, thinking they’re only friends with kie for her money or some shit. he would never suspect that of you. from the first time he saw you and kie bickering back and forth, ending the argument with laughs, he knew you were a keeper for kie. he raised her, so he knew first hand how much of a handful the girl could be. on top of that, kie would’ve told her parents all about your films, and although they’d always wanted her to end up with a surgeon or something, they were glad to see you had something driving you, a passion of sorts. the pogues, too, loved having you around. kie getting with you kind of squashed all their ‘who’s gonna end up with the girl’ beef, so they were even appreciative toward you for helping them in that department. on top of that, they loved the actual you, and you blended into the group seamlessly. so, essentially, you had all of their blessings, which meant you were already like a married couple.
your cat... your cat would love kiara, as strange as that may sound. kie would sometimes go to your house for family dinner, or after school to do homework, or for a ‘friendly’ little sleepover. you two would sit around your room, chatting while she stroked the cat, you trying not to laugh at the scene playing out before your eyes as your girlfriend ranted about the latest thing jj had done to piss her off. when she finished her story, you’d breathe out a laugh, smiling as you replied to her. “yeah, no, babe. that’s annoying. jj’s a bitch sometimes.” “what are you laughing at? were you even listening to me?” you’d laugh again, slapping a hand over your own mouth and throwing her an apologetic smile. “sorry. i was listening, i swear, and jj really is a bitch sometimes,” you’d get up and move over to sit on the bed next to her as you spoke. “but i just can’t get over you two. i mean, seriously. this is supposed to be my cat, not yours.” kie would scoff, clearly fighting a smile as she shook her head. “please. it’s not my fault. maybe cats prefer me because i actually listen when my girlfriend is upset about something.” “hey,” you’d say, grabbing her gently by the chin and forcing her to look at you. “i was listening, kiara.” your tone was lower than before, and she smiled at the honesty, convinced that you were telling the truth. “fine.” she’d peck your lips, moving to retreat when you slipped your hand to the back of her neck and pulled her back in for a deeper, more meaningful kiss. when you finally broke apart, you’d still keep her close to you, foreheads pressed together as kie opened her eyes to see you with yours still closer, clearly yearning for more. “your parents--” “won’t hear a single thing.” opening your eyes, you gave her a promising smile, and she finally let you pull her back in again. “if we get caught, that’s on you.” “sure thing. shut up now, please.”

Youth Culture
Hello readers, fellow students, and professor! In today’s post I will be talking about youth culture and soundtrack for films! Youth culture is defined as the unique behaviors, norms, and values typified by adolescents (young adults) in a larger culture (youth culture). In order to better understand youth culture I had to watch “The Breakfast Club,” “Euphoria,” “Saved By The Bell,” “KIDS,” “Mean Girls,” and “Mid90s,”. There are three common themes present in these films that are pressure, boys/girls, and living in the present all relating to youth culture. The first theme of  pressure is seen with Brain from “The Breakfast Club” getting pressured by his parents to get good grades, Rue from “Euphoria” receives it from her mom to go clean, “Saved By The Bell” see Jessie cave into pressure from her tests and commitments to friends, Telly from “KIDS” uses pressure in order to have a girl have sex with him, “Mean Girls” have Janis pressure Cady to become friends with the plastics, and “Mid90s” have Stevie fill pressure to fit in with the skater kids. For girls/boys, you have Brian lying about his virginity to the others, Zach and Slater (Saved By The Bell) both fight over Kelly, “KIDS” has Telly obsessed with having sex with only virgin girls, “Mean Girls” has Regina get back together with Aaron due to jealousy of him liking Cady, “Mid90s” has Stevie feel pressured by friends to have sex, and “Eurphoria” has Nate and  Mckay talk about a girl Cassie and her sexual past. Living in the present is shown with the way Bender from “The Breakfast Club” acts, “Euphoria” has Rue doing drugs with no concern for her future, “Saved By The Bell” has Zack using his schemes assuming they will work with no concern if they won’t until a problem arises, “KIDS” has the characters have sex with no worries about who it affects and to what could happen, “Mean Girls” has the cast focus on their high school lives more than anything, and “Mid90s” has Stevie drinking and drugs with no regard for his future.
I think these are all related to youth culture because of how they still occur today. Teens receive pressure from their parents to get good grades. If not, they get pressure from their peers to do something else; for me it was good grades. Focusing on attraction is always going to be something teens focus on and living in the present is something teens do until about senior year, I know that’s what I did.
From these films the character I most identified with was Brian from “The Breakfast Club.” I identify with him the most because I feel like I have more in common with him than all the other characters, and as we see him as the smart stereotype, I think people see me in the same way. I say that I have more in common with him because I am also awkward when trying to start conversations, especially with people I have just met. This awkwardness is shown when he starts to ramble about what clubs he is in. I am also smart like Brain as well; I have been on the high honor roll through high school and on the Dean’s list for all of the semesters I have attended here. The way the film portrays Brian is that he is the smart one, a stereotype.
In this way, I think I have in common with him. I say think because, for one, I don’t believe a person can recognize if they're a stereotype since they think of themselves as just themselves and not as a label. I never realized people actually thought of me as smart until I was put into a group for jeopardy. They had set up the classroom for the game because they had the desks split in half and facing each other from opposite sides of the room. For the game, whoever you sat across from that would be the person you would answer against. When it came to seating arrangements, the person across from me looked over and realized that he would be going against me for Jeopardy and immediately asked to switch seats with me immediately after the rules were set up. I had asked why and was met with the reply that I don’t want to lose, and his teammates are telling him good luck. I had always thought of the class as easy but, apparently, not by my classmates.
A sound track can be a list of songs with actual lyrics, a score which is instrumental, or both. I personally prefer to have both, since I love to sing and just having instruments in the background helps me with my homework. The soundtrack for a film or TV series is an important element as it impacts the narrative of a story by adding more depth to the story (Franke). It adds depth to the story by adding to a particular part of the story’s tone or mood. An example of mood would be something sad like a character’s death; adding music to it can make the event even more tragic and melancholy. It also influences the viewers’ emotions and lets them get immersed in the scene and feel sad. An example for where it helps the tone would be a casual episode, and the music throughout it is lighthearted, which helps the viewers know that okay, this isn’t serious. Here are two actual examples: https://youtu.be/Cf_aLpDMf1U and https://youtu.be/iSkJFs7myn0 .
Out of the films I had to watch for this class, I chose Mean Girls to reimage the soundtrack into 10 songs and only do the songs and not the scores. The first song I chose would be “Fifteen” by Taylor Swift. I chose this song because it reminds me of when Cady is first walking through to the high school for her first day, and that’s what the song is about. The second song I chose was Melanie Martinez’s “Lunchbox Friends.” I choose this song because it reminds me of the friendship that Cady has with Regina. Regina and Cady’s friendship is superficial and is like the lyric in the song “We can be lunchbox friends but only ‘til the clock hits three.” “Candy Store” from “Heathers the Musical'' would be three. I chose “Candy Store” because Cady’s is in Regina’s candy store. “Class Fight” and “Pacify Her,” both sung by Melaine Martinez were the fourth and fifth songs I chose because both songs are about two girls fighting over a boy while one is a physical fight while the other one keeps trying to convince the boy to drop the girl he is currently with.  I can imagine either song playing in the Halloween party scene. The sixth would be “Oh My God” by Ida Maria because it reminds me of how everything goes out of control for Cady, encompassing the line “Oh my god, you think I’m in control.” The seventh song I chose was “You Belong With Me” by Taylor Swift. I choose “You Belong With Me” because it is again like Cady and Regina fighting over Aaron; Cady is the one saying you belong with me and Regina is the girl who has Aaron. The eighth song would be Melanie Martinez’s “Drama Club.” The ninth song is “Obsessed” by Mirrah Carrie because it reminds me of how both Regina and Cady used the “why are you so obsessed with me?” on Janis. Finally, the tenth song would be “Show and Tell” by Melanie Martinez because it reminds me of Cady and Regina’s relationship, where Cady is Regina’s doll. I hope you all enjoyed the songs that I picked out. For some awesome scores I would recommend No straight Roads the game ( I love Yinu and Sayu’s track) along with Naruto’s ost (Sadness and Sorrow are simply my all time favorite). I hope you all enjoyed reading this blog about youth culture and soundtracks. Until Next time Adalia signing off!

Alex was your biggest fan, genuinely. You built your career from the ground up with him there by your side each step of the way. You'd never stray from your YouTube roots, so when your new movie-fans found your social medias, they were quickly fixated on seeing your content and you with Alex.
You'd been acting in smaller shows and movies for a while, like T@gged, a horror web series, you played a very minor role in The Walking Dead, and almost most importantly, you had a pretty big role in the A24 film Mid90s. Mid90s was basically your breakthrough, and you loved working with your costars and just being a skater who could act.
But, after the release of The Last Of Us, you'd gained a fair amount of new followers and subscribers. You weren't expecting your role to be that important to viewers, but people loved seeing you on screen playing such a different character that completely contrasted yourself. Alex did too, he religiously rewatched the movie just for you and would talk about how awesome or hot you looked in certain scenes. It was flattering. However, you weren't expecting to be nominated in the best actor in a supporting role over it.
You obviously brought Alex with you to the Oscar's, I mean, holy shit, how could you not? You both wear tuxedos, him in a dark burgundy color, and you in a dark grey with a lighter grey pattern. Both of you wear black collared shirts underneath your blazers and sit down at a table. You didn't know anyone else, nor were you friends with anyone else at the event, sadly.
You and Alex sit and talk about the event and the Streamer Awards coming up for him soon and what categories he'd been nominated in. Focusing the conversation on him made you a little less anxious about it all, considering if you for some reason won, you'd have to go on that stage in front of hundreds of people on live television to talk and hold your award.
A few hours pass, and finally, the show starts. You two both show respect for the other actors and filmmakers, but talk in between bits because your anxiety was only getting worse up until the point where you were on screen, showing your nomination for best supporting role.
Alex smiles and nudges your arm, telling you, "Look, it's you!"
You hide your face in your hands, embarrassed and flustered. You quickly smile and wave at the camera, however, until they move on to the other nominees.
"And the winner for Best Supporting Actor is..."
Alex taps his fingers on the table, watching you bounce your leg under the table as you watch.
"Y/n L/n!"
"Oh my God! Holy shit!" Alex shouts, standing up with you. He wraps you in a hug before quickly telling you to go get your award.
You grab his wrist and drag him up backstage and onto the stage, making him stand with you as you claim your award.
"Hi, oh my God, this is- this is crazy! Thank you!" You smile, speaking into the microphone as people clap and cheer for you. "Thank you so much, and thank you to my awesome boyfriend, Alex," You turn back to him, smiling as he holds his hands in front of him, clasped together. "I wouldn't be here without him, and I can't thank him enough. And thank you to all my fans who have been supporting me along the way, even new fans who just learned of my existence. Thank you so much, words can't describe how grateful I am right now"
You smile, looking down at the award before you walk off stage, Alex right behind you. He stops you backstage, wrapping you in a longer hug.
"I'm so proud of you, Y/n/n!" He smiles, "I love you so much"
"The adrenaline feels like drugs at the moment, my face is numb, holy shit"

Blog #1: Examining Youth Culture
This week we were assigned to watch four films and one television show that encouraged us to examine youth culture. These films and the television show took place in different time periods, ranging from the 1980’s up until the present.  When watching these films, I occasionally found myself identifying with characters and some of their actions. Surprisingly, I identified with Brian from The Breakfast Club. Like Brian, I was very shy and nerdy. My parents put a lot of pressure on me to do well, I was the oldest sibling which meant I had to set a good example. I was easily intimidated by others just as Brian was intimidated by John. I also had a huge respect for authority, I was very careful to not get in trouble. Seeing Brian constantly cut off during conversation was like looking in a mirror. Being soft spoken, when I did talk, I was talked over constantly, which added to my reasoning to just not talk at all. I never really pictured myself relating to him, I have watched the movie before, but I never really saw the connection until watching it again for my communications class.
Tumblr media
While these films were all different in their own ways, they each presented similar themes. The first theme that popped out to me was acceptance. Many of the characters in these films were seeking the acceptance of the people they surrounded themselves with as well as self-acceptance. In the show Euphoria we are introduced to an array of characters, each fighting their own battles. One character in particular named Kat stood out to me. Kat was always considered the less attractive member of her four-girl friend group. Boys often referred to her as “fat” because she did not fit the typical size 4 boy type that many find attractive. Unlike many characters who were seeking the approval of others, Kat seemed more focused on seeking approval from herself. She showed clear signs of being insecure, but after a video of her preforming a sexual act ended up online that all changed. She blossomed, developing this “hot girl” mentality once she realized how many people found her attractive the way she was. She found the acceptance within herself that she desperately needed. In the film Mean Girls, Cady was a prime example of someone who was seeking acceptance from others. She wanted to fit in so bad that she gave up who she was, transforming herself to fit into the Plastic’s cookie cutter standards. She left behind her genuine friends in order to be accepted by the popular crowd who in all reality did not like her in the first place. Both of these characters can be compared to the youth of today. Today’s youth seek acceptance, whether it be from others or themselves, it seems to be a common goal among many. When I was a teenager I wanted so badly to be accepted, but I was quiet, and awkward, a combination that did not exactly scream “cool”. I found myself struggling to remain true to who I was while also trying desperately to find the “group” that I fit in with. While I struggled for most of my high school experience trying to accept myself as well as be accepted, I ultimately had a revelation my senior year that the only person who needs to accept me is me. I focused on loving myself for me and have not looked back since.  Another theme I felt was present in these films would be the common goal to live life to the fullest. Many characters were focused on attending the next party or living their life the way they wanted to, regardless of consequences. In Mid90s the skater crowd just wanted to skate and party, they did not care who it effected in the process as long as they were having a good time. In Kids, Telly was focused on partying and being sexually active. He had no regard for the safety of himself or the girls he was involved with which ultimately was a major downfall. I feel that the youth today still possess the same mindset. Parties are still happening regularly even though we are in a pandemic. People do not care if they get sick, all that matters is they were living their life to the fullest and on their terms. While I was awkward in my youth, I still attended parties regularly. I was friends with people who were at every party every weekend it seemed, and I truthfully enjoyed every moment of it. Thinking back on it now, I was reckless, but being reckless made me feel alive. I feel that everyone at some point goes through their “I’m indestructible” phase of life, but that phase can really humble you. Living life to the fullest is what being young seems to be all about. A final theme I found common amongst all of the films was the theme of sexuality. While it was more present in films like Kids and Euphoria versus the film The Breakfast Club, I felt its something definitely worth mentioning. Sexuality is very prominent in youth culture. Teenagers are experimenting with not only sex but discovering their own sexuality. Promiscuity is no stranger to many high school students, it seemed like high school was a common time for many to figure out who they were sexually. While in that department I am a very private person, I will say that high school was not really the time for me to come to terms with any type of sexuality. I did however witness many of my friends go on their journey of sexual discovery, and I learned a lot from their stories. In high school I felt that everyone always knew who was sexually active and who was not. It always seemed like people would have all this knowledge on other’s personal lives, but not by their choice. People talked; privacy was virtually nonexistent. It seemed as if nothing was sacred, and while the girls definitely did their fair share of talking, it always seemed like the most outlandish stories came from the boys. The scene in Kids where Telly and his friends were talking about girl’s sexual preference and Jennie and her friends were talking about their own preference is what I imagined these conversations actually went like during my time in high school. Being the quiet girl met people always felt comfortable talking about things around me, and I can recall more then one occasion hearing both genders sides of an encounter and let me tell you they were always extremely different.
Tumblr media
When watching these movies, I noticed one other big thing outside of my relation to a character and the very prominent themes all the films appeared to share. I noticed the music, and how it set the overall narrative of the film. I noticed how in each film when there was something traumatic or sad occurring the music reflected the feeling the scene was meant to give. When there was a party going on or when characters were doing something fun the music was fast or upbeat. The music helped set the overall vibe and tone for what was happening, it’s almost as if it gave you an indication of what was going to happen. I took the time to create a spotify playlist which I will link below this post. Each song I chose because I feel it reflected my experiences during my youth well. The first song I chose is “Kids in Love” by Mayday Parade. This song reminds me of the silly romances I had throughout my youth. I always thought I was in love, but at that age who didn’t. The second song I chose was “Therapy” by All Time Low. I was a very angsty and depressed kid, I listened to this song on repeat when I would go through my frequent, spurts of depression. While the song itself is sad, it oddly brought me comfort. The third song I chose was “Killing in The Name” by Rage Against The Machine. This song is a bit strange, but the ending in particularly reminded me of my mentality during my youth. There is a lot of colorful language in the song, but I felt the ending, which essentially is saying I’m going to do what I want, was spot on with my overall attitude during the age of sixteen to seventeen. The fourth song I chose is “Edge of Seventeen” by Stevie Nicks. I have always idolized Stevie, I would listen to this car during the warmer months, driving with the windows down, and feeling as free as a bird. Honestly anything by Stevie put me in a good mood, I would drive around singing her music at the top of my lungs quite frequently. The fifth song I chose was “ I Want You To Want Me” by Cheap Trick. This song represents my desire to be wanted by someone, which I feel everyone can relate to. I wanted to be in love, I wanted someone to be crazy about me. I watched way too many romance movies during my youth, hence my minor obsession with love. For my sixth song I chose “Rock and Roll All Nite” by KISS. This one I feel is self-explanatory, I wanted to party all the time! This song is fun and upbeat and to this day I still enjoy it. For my seventh song I chose “I Will Not Bow” by Breaking Benjamin. This song represents my depression, I refused to allow it to break me. I shut myself away from the world a lot, I was “a cold-blooded fake” at times. This song pulled me out of some pretty dark times, I still listen to it when I find myself in a less then ideal head space to remind me that I am strong and “will not break”. The eight song I chose is also slightly morbid but is one of my favorites. I chose “Can You Feel My Heart” by Bring Me The Horizon. The lyrics “I’m scared to get close, and I hate being alone, I long for the feeling to not feel at all, the higher get, the lower I’ll sink, I can’t drown my demons, they know how to swim” was essentially my headspace when I was sixteen. To say mentally I was going through it would be an understatement. This song was not around when I was a teen, but when I first heard it my mind instantly went back to that time. My ninth choice is far less morbid, I chose “First Date” by Blink-182. It reminds me of the nerves and craziness of a first date. It embodies the awkwardness that you feel at the beginning and then the happiness and excitement that followed. The final song I chose is “Teenagers” by My Chemical Romance. This one I chose because to me it is the anthem of what being a teenager is! Teenagers can be scary with how little care or regard for safety they have. They’re wild and angsty. I like how this song covers how mean some cliques could be too, it overall is just a really cool song in my opinion. While my song choices are a bit all of the place, I feel my wide variety of genres and songs paint the picture of who I was during my youth. I was a mess, but I made the best out of it.

Mid90s (2018)
I was a skater in the mid 90s, fourteen years old at the time. Still preferring NYC eastcoast roughness over LA westcoast laidbackness, I’d rather recommend ’Kids’ by Larry Clark.

How Michael Cera and Lucas Hedges became wise-cracking BFFs
Lucas Hedges and Michael Cera play allies in Broadway’s “The Waverly Gallery,” however offstage, they’re virtually a vaudeville act. And whereas they’ve each been round — Hedges was an Oscar nominee for “Manchester by the Sea” and Cera appeared in TV’s “Arrested Growth” and the movies “Superbad,” “Juno” and extra — they’ve by no means labored collectively till they have been solid in Kenneth Lonergan’s drama, opening Oct. 25. What took them so lengthy? “We averted one another,” Cera says. “In any respect prices,” Hedges provides. Jokes apart — for now — Cera, 30, tells The Publish he took the position as a result of Hedges was concerned, whereas Hedges, 21, says he’s a giant fan of Cera’s. Sitting collectively in Hedges’ chartreuse dressing room, they appear like two outdated males on a park bench, obsessing over particulars whereas an intercom blares overhead. “How do I flip it off?” Hedges asks. “You most likely have to transform the wiring,” Cera says. “I can get in there.” They’d simply come off the stage from their matinee alongside Elaine Could, who performs a Greenwich Village art-gallery proprietor affected by Alzheimer’s. Hedges performs her grandson and Cera, an artist. The play, primarily based on Lonergan’s personal gallery-owning grandmother, is each humorous and deeply unhappy. “I had a good friend who got here to see the present, whose grandmother went by means of this and not too long ago handed away,” Hedges says. “She stated that she had a variety of remorse about how she dealt with the state of affairs, however seeing us wrestle by means of it gave her compassion for herself.” Michael Cera (left) and Lucas HedgesBruce Glikas/FilmMagic; Dimitrios Kambouris/Getty Photos Hedges, the son of author/director Peter Hedges, sees his Broadway debut as an escape from a jam-packed yr of movies: “Boy Erased,” about homosexual conversion remedy, will likely be out Nov. 2; “Ben Is Again,” a couple of younger drug addict, is coming in December; and “Mid90s,” a drama directed by Jonah Hill, is out Friday. “It type of is nice, as a result of it provides me full tunnel imaginative and prescient, and I get to neglect that any of these motion pictures exist,” says Hedges, as he fidgets with a foam yoga block. Cera, who’s been on Broadway in two different Lonergan performs — “This Is Our Youth” and “Foyer Hero” — believes theater is the closest he’ll ever come to a 9-to-5 gig. “It nearly provides you a model of stability,” says Cera, who wed his longtime girlfriend this yr. “It’s a really uncommon [career] we’re in, whenever you’re not sleeping in your personal mattress, you’re not seeing your pals.” Though the 2 actors bonded throughout rehearsals and previews, they don’t at all times agree — not even concerning the climate. “There’s one thing I discover disturbing concerning the winter,” says Hedges, who grew up in Brooklyn. “I don’t thoughts it in any respect,” replies Cera, who lives in Brooklyn now however grew up in Canada. “You bundle as much as go outdoors, and you simply face it.” They don’t agree on sports activities, both. Hedges love basketball and baseball and feels “an intense reference to” the Jets’ new quarterback Sam Darnold, whereas Cera couldn’t care much less. “I like taking part in sports activities,” he says. “I simply by no means watched, and now I really feel prefer it’s too late.” When he mentions taking part in squash, Hedges perks up. “Dude, you play squash?” says the man, who ranked third within the nation when he attended highschool in Brooklyn Heights. “We gotta play … I’ll whoop yo’ ass!” One factor they each agree on is the privilege of working with Could each night time. The legendary comic, author and actress is 86, though Cera says she plainly considers age only a quantity. “I like that she calls her daughter [68-year-old Jeannie Berlin] her ‘child,’” says Cera. “That’s a great way to remain younger.” Could, like Lonergan, is somebody Hedges would like to collaborate with extra, however he has some considerations. “Generally, I feel I’d give something to work with this particular person once more,” Hedges muses. “However I don’t know if they’ll wish to work with me.” And why is that, Cera jokingly wonders: “Due to your outbursts?” Share this: https://nypost.com/2018/10/19/how-michael-cera-and-lucas-hedges-became-wise-cracking-bffs/ The post How Michael Cera and Lucas Hedges became wise-cracking BFFs appeared first on My style by Kartia. https://www.kartiavelino.com/2018/10/how-michael-cera-and-lucas-hedges-became-wise-cracking-bffs.html

The Best Strange: The Young Actors of Mid90s on Starring in Jonah Hill’s Directorial Debut
by Nick Allen
October 17, 2018   |
Print Page Tweet
“Mid90s” is a story that comes from a very personal, if not surprising part of writer/director Jonah Hill, who went from man-child comedy protege to two-time Oscar-nominee without playing characters who broadcasted his fandom for and deep knowledge of skateboard culture. Using real-life skaters as his lead actors, and having an attention to period detail that explicitly eschews nostalgia porn, the movie nonetheless immerses us into the skater world, through the eyes of a young man (Sunny Suljic’s Stevie) trying to find an escape from his relationship with his violent older brother (Lucas Hedges) and his mother (Katherine Waterston). Stevie finds camaraderie, and a wealth of life lessons, during his time skating and chilling with the likes of Fuckshit (Olan Prenatt), Fourth Grade (Ryder McLaughlin) and Ruben (Gio Galicia), and the wise, older Ray (Na-Kel Smith).
RogerEbert.com spoke these young actors about making the film, the music that Hill turned them onto, the different details that keep the story genuine to the ‘90s and more.
When you guys were all on set, what was a day of shooting like?
SUNNY SULJIC: Every single day it was always something new. It was always like a different scene and it was just like, every single day each emotion was like different for me, at least. It was insane, we’d all see each other and get happy. It was one of the best experiences, I loved it and want to do it again.
You should pressure Jonah for a sequel.
SS: You can’t do a sequel with these types of films, it will be a classic and it’s already said its thing, and then sequels are like … I don’t know, it’s like saying a sequel for “The Grand Budapest Hotel.”
What about for you guys?
RYDER MCLAUGHLIN: It felt like I was going to school. You get to school and it’d be like, you’re getting your make-up done and you’re seeing your friends in homeroom … messing around and then you go to work and do stuff.
GIO GALICIA: That’s such a good way to put it. I never thought of it like that.
SS: That was alright.
GG: Nah, that was on fire.
RM: Yeah, don’t steal that from me.
(Clockwise L-R): Olan Prenatt, Ryder McLaughlin, Sunny Suljic, Gio Galicia
Did it feel like the ‘90s when you were on set? Did Jonah do anything in particular to give you the feel of the period?
SS: Oh yeah, like, a lot of the scenes that didn’t really make it into the movie, it felt like the time period definitely. There was a Fatburger scene, and the Fatburger looked like it was exactly in the ‘90s. We just walked in and I came out of the van and I just saw “Fatburger.” And I’ve seen photos of the Fatburgers from the ‘90s, and it was the exact same. It helped me out so much, I was like damn I’m really in the ‘90s and in the character. I invested so much of my time. And all the food, the works, everything.
OLAN PRENATT: And the pictures on the wall, I remember hearing Jonah talk to the set decorator, and he said, “Are you sure that this is an archive?” Everything was verbatim from the ‘90s.
Was it weird to play a character in the ‘90s?
SS: It was probably the best strange that it could be. It was a lot of craziness, but I loved it so much. I’m just smiling thinking about it.
OP: We watched films, listened to iPods that he gave us that the specific characters would listen to. Because you can understand a lot from somebody’s music selection. And that was pretty much a part of the character adjusting.
He gave you actual iPods?
OP: Literal iPod. It says like, “Mid90s” on the back of it. It’s so cool.
Don’t lose it! Or sell it and make a lot of money.
SS: I’m not selling mine!
OP: Yeah, I prefer listening to that iPod then going on YouTube. It’s awesome.
What was the moment that you guys knew that Jonah knew what he was doing?
SS: The first minute I met him. I read the script, I mean, the first audition, it had so much meaning into it.
What was your first audition?
SS: The first audition was the skate shop scene, and a scene actually with my mom, the Benihana scene. I already felt it, and we did a chemistry test where we were all there together, and it just felt right. The script, I mean Jonah put so much time, work and effort, it just turned out so great, and I loved it.
OP: One time that I felt like that was when we all went into the skate shop, and I seen all of the ads that were posted on the wall, the boards that were posted on the wall. Every board was actual graphics from that era, the wheels. Everything in the skate shop, and I realized that, wow, Jonah, I skated when I was younger and you were really a part of that culture, to the T.
Writer/director Jonah Hill
Does he skate now?
OP: He did a kickflip on set.
RM: I think he hurt his knee. Not on set, but before.

SS: He was already hurt, and then he did a kickflip. It wasn’t like he hurt himself on a kick flip.
He’s not a skateboarder but he knows the culture.
OP: He’s a part of that culture. He’s not just a fan of that culture and knows it, he’s a part of the skateboarding culture.
RM: But also, tasteful. He’s super into a lot of things that … I remember a long time ago there’s a company called Crailtap, and they have like a mini top five, and Spike Jonze is a part of that company. And it was Jonah Hill outside of a skate shop in New York talking about his top five favorite skate videos, and it’s videos I’ve never heard of. A lot of them were from the ‘90s, and they were stuff you probably watched growing up, and it was like, I don’t even know this stuff.
SS: Yeah, definitely. If Jonah did not skate, it would not be how it is. The skate shops … that is such an accurate representation of how the ‘90s looked, how everybody’s just hanging out, and how genuine it is.
OP: Super respectful to the skateboarding culture.
The language in the movie is very ‘90s, but crude with casual usage of words like “fag,” “retard,” “gay,” etc. Did you guys talk with Jonah much about that?
SS: It just sparked—I have an insane note on that. Jonah was saying that if there was not any of that, it would be fake. Completely fake. So I think it was smart for putting that in because if he would just fake that, it was really real, and that little … it wasn’t too subtle, it was pretty out there, but that was one of the main things in the ‘90s.
It feels like people were a little more casual with those words back then.
SS: Yeah, people were more casual. Those little slurs. But we all definitely talked about that.
OP: But also during one of the Q&As in the beginning of the press tour, he said that the best feedback that he got was, “Oh, so you guys are gonna release a movie from the ‘90s.” So all of that was a part of being genuine to the ‘90s.
Sunny Suljic
Did you guys pick up any new music or new interests while working on this movie?
OP: Cypress Hill, I wasn’t really open to that style. [laughs]

SS: I love the … OK, so as we got the iPod, a lot of those songs were on the soundtrack. And I loved all those songs on the soundtrack, especially when I go in my brother’s room and the first song that plays, that was one of my favorite songs.
OP: Oh, one thing—one of my favorite songs is the song that I went into the party and came out with a bunch of 40s. That song is crazy. The first time I heard it, he played the scene back right after we filmed it and then added the music to it. And then play music on his phone, and I thought he was just seeing how it would go. But that was the song, and I was like, “Whoa, this is insane.”
RM: I had to look that song up after. There’s like a Wu-Tang song that they sampled …
There’s a GZA song in there.
OP: Yeah, yeah. I originally heard the Pharrell version! And I was like, “Whoa.”
GG: I feel like after we got the iPods, I listened to all the music, and it just opened a new genre of music. And more ‘90s music, it was so sick. I tried to look up most of the music.
SS: There was a lot of Wu-Tang songs on there. They were super sick.
GG: Huh?
SS: The Wu-Tang songs?
GG: Oh yeah, those were sick.
(L-R): Olan Prenatt, Ryder McLaughlin
This movie’s about people being shaped by who they know, and what they do. Who is someone that was a big influence on you?
SS: That’s probably exactly what I would say, but also Jonah. I mean, skateboarding definitely made me realize at like a younger age, I just saw the world at a younger age so i’m more open minded. Jonah, I mean, taught me a lot of things, acting as well, but just also personal things to know, because he’s been in the acting industry for such a long time. There are definitely things that he’s taught me.

What has Jonah told you as someone who was once also a young actor in the industry?
SS: Just influencing me, because he was growing up in the ‘90s, it was a lot of negativity with speech, you know? And just be aware of what you’re saying, and who you’re talking to. I would get into detail, but they are Jonah’s secrets and personal information. [laughs]
What about you guys? Who had a big influence on you?
RM: As a person? My mom and my dad.
GG: Before I started skating, I was always just inside my house. I wasn’t really going out, trying to explore. And that’s when I found skating. It opened me up to a ton of different types of people. I feel like I connected with older people, so I would always hang with older people and see how they reacted to everything else, and it was so much different than how I would react to stuff. I feel like it matured me, in the better way.
OP: I would agree with Gio, I think with skateboarding, you can experience … all the things we go through and see and are exposed to through skateboarding really shape who I am. So if skateboarding was a person, skateboarding. [laughs]
