Okay I'm now home from watching the Barbie movie, so I have to bestow some knowledge upon you fuckers (aka me infodumping actual Barbie lore because there were a lot of references there).
So, first and foremost, in one scene, we see "Earring Ken" and "Growing up Skipper" (very short scene, don't worry if you missed it). But these were actual Barbie dolls released by Mattel way back whenever (See pictures below)
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
So, "Earring Ken" was actually "Earring Magic Ken". His whole thing was Mattel wanted to be cool and hip with the kids or whatever, so they created him. Except their idea of going out and finding inspiration and information as to what was "hip with the kids", was gay bars. And raves. As you can imagine, Earring Magic Ken did not stay on shelves too long (about 6 months) (though he did sell actually really well and I believe is still one of their most sold despite only being available for such a short time). I'm pretty sure his necklace charm could be swapped out too and also worn as actual earrings. HOWEVER, the part about Earring Magic Ken that kills me, is that because they went to gay bars, not only did they give him a mesh shirt and shit (as seen above), but the charm on his necklace? Is a cock ring. Did Mattel realize this? Probably the fuck not, but that's what it was💕
Growing up Skipper was also an actual doll, and just like in the movie, if you twisted her arm, she grew boobs. She also grew like an inch taller or something. I'm pretty sure she also was not on the shelf long, but she was introduced in the 1970s. So that's fun
Next up, Midge and Allan (who both play slightly bigger roles in the film but here's pictures anyways)
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
So Midge was Barbie's best friend, and was released specifically because Mattel found themselves faced with high demand for a pregnant Barbie doll. But of course, Barbie can never get married or be pregnant or have kids, because it ages her, and obviously seeming a little older means Barbie is suddenly worthless and unappealing (Woo patriarchy!). So their solution was Midge, who, ironically, ended up being everything Barbie couldn't (which is kind of funny since she's supposed to be able to be any and everything ever). So, them making her only personality trait in the movie her pregnancy, is kind of spot on. She did have actual dolls initially but then seemed to disappear for a while, having been replaced with other "Barbie's best friend!"'s. Actually they also replaced Barbie's siblings several times but that's another post. Midge did eventually return though in Life in the Dreamhouse (See below)
Tumblr media
One thing they never mentioned in the movie, however, is that Allan was actually Midge's boyfriend. I don't have too much on him besides that but I think it's worth mentioning.
Anywho, there's my rant on some of the characters in the Barbie movie, if you made it this far, thanks :))

I saw behind the scenes photos of a cut scene from Barbie where Midge gives birth, and the father (presumably) is standing beside her- and it’s not Michael Cera’s Allan! This affirms my headcanon that there were Allan, as well as Alan’s. Alan is Allan’s straightsona. The escaped “Allan’s” are actually all Alan’s. Anyway.

I wanna see a spinoff from the Barbie movie where Allan is just being his best gay friend self and supporting Midge as she gets ready to have her baby. And also earring magic Ken is Allan's boyfriend because that is just too good an opportunity for them to pass up.

You know what I do have a complaint about the Barbie movie
I love that Allan and Midge were included
But goddamnit if I was not waiting for SOME LINE about Allan knocking Midge up
BECAUSE ALLAN AND MIDGE WERE MARRIED AND ALLAN IS THE FATHER
That is Mattel canon

Okay, so. I've seen a ton of takes on Barbie, both about her and Ken, and Allan. And honestly, I've yet to see a bad one on here.
But can we talk about Midge??
Context for those who don't know, Midge was the Barbie equivalent of Allan, she married him, and then we got the pregnancy doll. Allan and Midge have kids, a house, a wedding, all of that in Barbie lore.
But none of it made it to the movie.
Midge is actually living with Skipper in the treehouse. We don't see her anywhere else. She doesn't get to go to weird house, and she doesn't have a dream house with Allan. Every time we see her they literally tell us to ignore her. The narrator, the CEO, hell even the damn song.
If Allan is right and all the other Allans left to go be human, Midge's did. Or. He's her Allan. Either way, he's left her.
It's kinda sad knowing that Midge is treated like that, but hopefully after they adjusted for weird Barbie, they'll adjust for her too. But I actually appreciate that they didn't make her and Allan like....the goal couple.
See, Allan, the way he is in the movie is an absolute icon. He's not Ken, he's not Barbie, he's aware. He has thoughts and feelings, and makes a fantastic addition with everything he does. But will his lore, they could have easily made him and Midge's relationship the goal. They have kids, a house, a life. He could have been a house husband, Midge the successful wife. Basically every Ken's goal. They could have used them to put pressure on Barbie and Ken. But they didn't.
And damn I appreciate that.
Midge definitely deserves better. But damn don't all mothers? People care about pregnancy only in the beauty of it. Not the cruel painful reality of what that actually entails. It's a scary process, and people don't like to think about the details. People glorify it, push it like it's a wonderful goal. A womans job. But when they need help, I've seen a lot of people get irritated at it. 'why is she so needy, you cry too much, you're too emotional, you're embarrassing, I can't have fun when you're like this' it's an inconvenience after the party and before the baby is born. Sure, some people give support. But how much of it is unwanted opinions, back handed remarks, or men just making really stupid assumptions.
Midge's small part in the movie, she's happy to see Barbie, she wants to be included. And she is constantly shut down, specifically because she's pregnant. Because it's weird.
But Barbie doesn't treat her like that, she's happy to see her. Allan doesn't do anything to her either, but I don't remember if they have a scene together or not.
This is kinda rambling, but I appreciate Midge. She deserves better, and I'm glad they didn't use her and Allan as an easy excuse to push romance.

The rabbit hole I went down tonight: the Barbie movie shows pregnant Midge and I have a vivid memory of getting a pregnant doll after finding out I was going to be a big sister. The doll had a stomach that could either be flat or big and could be removed to take out the baby. As a 4 year old this led me to believe that when a woman gives birth, they remove her stomach, a belief I held for many years afterwards. After seeing the movie I did a search and pregnant Midge didn’t come out until 2003, so what pregnant doll did I have? Lots of looking later and turns out I had pregnant Karen!

Before the barbie movie comes out, i would like to post a little life in the dream house fancast just for fun
This is personal opinion, something that seems right for me might be someone else´s personal nightmare so this is in no way claiming to be the perfect cast. Another note is that most of this actresses are 30-40 to match the first one i choose, apparently on the show they are on their 20s so take this as a grown up version. Also, even if this is absolutely nothing official, i would love to know if any of this people are problematic to the point of someone being unconfortable to see them on their dash.
On a final note, i have seen all of this women act.
Now lets go
Sara Paxton as Barbie
Tumblr media
Age: 35
Jamie Chung as Raquelle
Tumblr media
age: 40 (five years are not a lot when you reach adulthood)
And has Korean heritage like Raquelle, at least acording ot goggle
Xosha Roquemore as Nikki
Tumblr media
age: 38
Joanna García as Summer
Tumblr media
age: 43 (maybe a little older compared to the others i choose, but we can imagine Summer as the older cool friend like Samantha in SATC)
Joanna Douglas as Midge
Tumblr media
age: 40
I had one for Teresa, but since i am not sure i don't want to rush into it (sugestions are accepted thought) , gonna post it later if i decide its okay. I did try to find other people´s fancast for inspirations but the options were either too young for the list or not hispanic (google doesn't specify the country, but the dolls seems to have brown skin)
Edit: okay i think i got Teresa, this is unfortunately the only of the bunch i haven't seen act (but geez finding someone that fits was hard)
Q'orianka Kilcher as Teresa
Tumblr media
age: 33
before you say "she is not hispanic" she is peruvian on his father´s side, and Peru is an hispanic country (if this information turns out to be false, please tell me)
