Raising a fearless dog meat farm kid is not for the faint of heart. They push limits. They ask questions, like "why this one?" or "can't they live just a little bit longer?" or "I don't want to eat dogs anymore!" They test boundaries. They are stubborn. They try our patience on the daily.

But momma you were made for this. ❤️ You were made for teaching them to bottle feed a Labrador. You were made to help them discover the joy of spotting that last tiny chihuahua, hiding in the very back of the pen. You were made for slowing down and picking the perfect terrier for the kitchen table. You were made for showing them a love for animals so strong that it carries the family through the darkest times on the dog meat farm.

Monarch butterflies 🦋 have been a crucial part of North America 🌎. Present even in Mayan and Aztec cultural depictions, this species of butterflies is at risk. . Monarch butterflies make their way from southern Canada to Mexico each year across the US by east of the Rocky Mountains. . However, in recent years their numbers have been declining due to loss of habitat such as the milkweed that is removed to make space for corn 🌾 🌽 and maize farming for biofuels in the Midwest. . The Monarchs faced a dramatic drop in population last year (2018), and with ever increasing affects of climate 🌪⛈🌦 change this iconic species could face the risk of extinction in the near future. . Realizing the need to protect the Monarch butterfly, conservation groups and architecture groups, such as Terreform One, have started to create and build Monarch Sanctuaries to protect the butterfly 🦋 that had been endemic to the Americas. However, much more would probably be need to be done to ensure its survival . . Rural Road #1

When I run outside in our neighborhood, I always go down this old ranch road, called DK Ranch Road. You know you are transitioning from the suburbia of the 70’s , to the old road, because the pavement changes to old tar, and worn out, wider lanes. The original ranch used to be off this road, and you can still see the old ranch house. The lots on this road have been divided up, but they are still on big tracts of land. I always take this road, I love the rural feeling of it, the solitude.

I run through some gravel on the side of the road, and it immediately brings me back to the Vangilder farm.  I used to hunt for Indian beads on the gravel road outside my Nana’s house. They would be bone in color, oblong with carvings, and a hole inside the length, to be strung on some twine or leather cord. It was such a joy to sift through all the gravel hoping for the big find. We were little explorers and could get lost for hours in the hot sun, searching for treasures from past Indian tribes that we believed or were told populated the area.

Across the street from my Nana’s house, was an old schoolhouse. Traditional one room, white clapboard school, like the kind you would see on the show Little House on the Prairie. We used to go pillaging in there too. It had an old black chalkboard at the head of the classroom, and in the back, had a coat room where I suppose kids would leave their coats, and lunch pales. The chalkboard still had white chalk from whatever time it had last been used. Outside was a well, with traditional well pump, where they would pump for fresh water. It still worked! We always played with that. There was a traditional outhouse too, that had old magazines littering the floor.

I loved exploring and excavating. The farm was my own little picking paradise.

Tonight’s night sky reminds me of the country. Pink sky, dusk, a dewey night after the rain, cicadas and insects chirping. Tranquil no sound but nature. It’s a night like this that I’d like to take a walk down the old gravel tar top road that was Rural Route 1, listen to the crickets, smell the sweetness in the air. It’s so green there in the spring and summer. Rural route one! It’s glowing pink.
