So I finally got the chance to watch Creed III in the IMAX on the 16th and wowwoww. First of all bruh. Secondly bruh and third of all bruhh🔥🔥

No but seriously I can’t even explain how proud I am to watch a film Michael B directed and for it to be the third instalment in the Creed franchise. I’m gonna summarise in bullet points or I’ll be here all day singing their praises 🙌🏾

* Jonathan acting his asss off as per👏🏾👏🏾

* The anime inspo in the fights 👌🏾

* Kept having to remind myself wow MBJ directed it because it was top notch

* The air around Donnie just felt heavier in the best way, more sure of himself in comparison to Creed I which is beautiful to see

* Omg seeing Donnie as a father and using ASL to communicate was so touching and powerful

* Little Mila as Amara was amazing and added so much feeling to the film🫶🏾

* Seeing Michael’s family and friends in the film was so special!!

* Seeing Bianca achieve her dreams albeit in a different way was beautiful to see and seeing her have her own things was amazing as she is not just a prop of a character used to further the male protagonist (as she never was!!!)

* The growth and love between Donnie and Bianca as partners and parents 🥰🥰🥰🥰

Creed III is a 2023 American sports drama film directed, produced by and starring Michael B. Jordan (in his directorial debut) from a screenplay by Keenan Coogler and Zach Baylin. It is the the third in the Creed film series, and the ninth overall in the Rocky film series. It also stars Tessa Thompson, Jonathan Majors, Wood Harris, Mila Davis-Kent, Florian Munteanu and Phylicia Rashad.

Creed III (2023, dir. Michael B. Jordan) - review by Rookie-Critic

Over the past couple of weeks, I have watched all nine films in the Rocky/Creed franchise, leading up to seeing this in the theater last night. My overall impression of the Rocky movies is that, on average, they're good. Not great, but they're passable character studies, my favorite of the bunch being the sixth film, Rocky Balboa, from 2006. The Creed films, however, have been absolutely fantastic. Michael B. Jordan is an immense screen presence that was more than up to the task of taking the mantle over from Sylvester Stallone, while Stallone himself still manages to turn in some of the best acting he's ever done at the same time. The first Creed is possibly the best in the entire franchise because of the relationship between Jordan's Adonis Creed and Rocky. The continuation and growth of that relationship, as well as well as the hardships it endures because of the weight of the history of Rocky IV and its effects on the events of Creed II is what makes that film so good. There are a lot of things that make a good Rocky/Creed film work, and one of the most important is how the film writes the relationships between its characters. I think that, ultimately, this factor is what makes Creed III one of the best in the franchise.

This newest entry feels like the first time the story is about something bigger than the heart of its protagonist, whether that be Balboa or Creed. This film, as cliche and tacky as this is going to sound, is about friendship. Even more so than that, it's about brotherhood, and how the ties that bind us to certain people in our lives are there regardless of the twists and turns life takes us on. In a way, it's what all three Creed films have been about, but in Creed III we see this story unfold with a character that we, as the audience, have no preconceived emotional ties to, Damien Anderson, played with the usual mastery of the craft by Jonathan Majors. The chemistry between Jordan and Majors, both as brothers and as rivals, is electrifying. Never in a Rocky movie have I believed the full range of a relationship so fully as I have between these two characters, with everything playing out right up until the final round of the extraordinary fight at the end of the film. I don't think I've ever been more emotionally invested in the final fight of a Rocky/Creed film like I was during Creed III's climactic battle. There is history that's been built, things that have been said, things that have been left unsaid, this isn't a boxing match, it's a therapy session, and not just for Adonis, but for Damien, as well. There is a story being told during that final match, with Jordan making a truly inspired artistic decision that I won't spoil here, but it's an absolutely stunning moment that is just indicative of his talent and major potential as a director (this film is his directorial debut). To me, these movies are at their best when the fight at the end of the film isn't really about the fight, but about the characters' journey to get there. The fight is merely a chance to reflect on the growth the characters have gone through and the journey therein, and the outcome of it is almost a non-issue. It's what makes that original Rocky film so great, it's what made Rocky Balboa so great, it's what made the first Creed great, and, finally, it's what makes Creed III great.

I've been flipping on whether or not this is my favorite of the franchise. The relationship between Rocky and Donnie in the first Creed film, as well as Stallone's performance, in general, might give that the edge, as Rocky isn't even in this one. While I understand Stallone's decision to not continue forward with the Creed films, his presence was missed, and there were a handful of scenes that would have heavily benefited from him being there. However, that is the only reason this isn't taking the top spot, because outside of that, it's masterfully done.

I have to admit that I did see this in a D-Box seat (Cinemark's premium seating option that rumbles and moves with the film). Obviously, if you suffer from motion sickness or anything like that, this isn't going to be your thing, but it did make the boxing sequences incredibly fun, and I would recommend seeing it this way if you can.

The Mosley Review: Creed 3

I believe the Rocky franchise is the longest running and suceessful film franchise that is purely about the sport of boxing. It wasn't always about the fights but rather the man wearing the gloves and his progression as a human being to greatness. An underdog story that has carried on for generations and now comes the chance for the new face of the franchise to carry that torch in their own personal journey. What I've loved about the Creed franchise is how the foundation of the legacy that came before Adonis has informed and shaped his path. We saw his origins in the first film, we saw him fight to build a career and a family in the second film and now we see him live his own life. What I loved in this film is that we get to dig deeper into the past of Adonis and how his past comes back to remind him of what he has risen above. That to me has always been the heart of the franchise and that has stayed consistent in this new entry. The emotional bond that Adonis had with his family was the best part and I loved the immediate connection and sense of failure he felt once he was reunited with his long lost friend. The story then takes off in a fairly quick and sometimes unrealistic way that might take boxing purists by surprise. There is a connective thread in the film that is severed in a death scene that seems to come out of nowhere. It is explained, but it just didn't sit well with me. It wasn't a perfect step into the first round on the titular character's own, but it still was an entertaining character drama that was fun and filled with wonderful performances.

Michael B. Jordan returns as Adonis Creed and he still delivers the same charisma and strength the character is known for. This time around he is more of a business and family driven man that has truly grown up. Tessa Thompson returns as his loving wife Bianca and she continues to deliver her best work as the character. The chemistry between them is by far the best I've seen on screen. They are the perfect example of what a loving couple looks like and I loved every second they were together. The one actress that stole the film for me was their daughter Amara played the by the wonderful Mila Davis-Kent. From the moment she is on screen to the very end of the film, she represented the heart of the film and I loved that she was the driving force behind Adonis' decisions. Their scenes together were amazing and adorable. Phylicia Rashad returns as Mary Anne Creed and I loved that she continued to be the connective tissue to the past and how she reveals the many ways she protected Adonis as a child. Wood Harris was even more awesome and the voice of warning as Adonis' couch Tony "Little Duke" Evers. He would always be right about everything and I agreed with all of his rants. Johnathan Majors continues to shine in his meteoric rise to fame and as Damian "Diamond Dame" Anderson, he was spectacular. The emotional connective thread between him and Adonis was really something fun to explore. They both represent a different side of the same coin and it was amazing to watch play out. The emotional story between them truly comes to a head in the final fight of the film and it was brilliantly portrayed by both actors.

The score by Joseph Shirley was excellent and drives home the emotional core of the film. I liked that he kept the hip hop infused rhythms and beats that Ludwig Göransson began in the original film and created some new sounds for the characters. Visually the film was stunning and the use of the IMAX cameras during the fights was epic and well shot. I do wish that Adonis and Dame would've taken more damage though. These films consistently showed the amount of bruising, welts and swelling from the very violent hits traded between the fighters and I just felt that they really scaled it back too far in this film. It made the fights seem unrealistic. There was a sense of polish that was missing as some of the charm of the franchise has rubbed off a bit. Overall, Michael B. Jordan has done excellent job for a first time director and I loved the personal story his team crafted for Adonis. This was another great entry in the Creed franchise and if they end it here, I will be satisfied. If they make another one, then keep this same energy.
