1,500-Year-Old Ivory Beard Comb Found at Ancient Grave in Germany
The rare sixth-century grooming tool features intricate carvings of a hunting scene.
Archaeologists in Bavaria, Germany, have discovered the 1,500-year-old grave of a 40- to 50-year-old man who was buried in luxury with a horse and fine weapons—and an intricately carved ivory comb that he may have used to style his hair and beard. The team also uncovered a second grave holding the remains of a slightly younger woman who was buried with ornate grave goods, including a ceramic bowl from North Africa. It’s unclear how these  objects found their way to Central Europe, Tag24 reports.
“The two finds must have been real luxury goods at the time,” says Mathias Pfeil, curator-general of the Bavarian State Office for Monument Preservation (BLfD), in a statement, per Google Translate. “They show how far people’s contacts still went even after the dissolution of the Roman Empire and its provinces [in the fifth century C.E.]”
At the time of the man’s death around the sixth century, Germanic Alemanni people under control of the Franks dominated the region. The archaeologists speculate that the unusual goods may have been gifts from a ruler or loot from battles in what is now Italy.
The graves were located in Nördlinger Ries, a 16-mile-wide crater in southern Germany formed by a meteor strike, reports Mindy Weisberger for Live Science. The ancient village where the burials took place roughly covered the crater’s central depression.
After extensive work restoring the comb, which had been heavily damaged, the researchers found that both of its sides were covered in carved decorations featuring gazelle-like animals. The creatures appear to be jumping to escape predators not seen in Europe, suggesting that whoever made the comb based the scenes on African wildlife, per the statement. While combs are common in centuries-old European graves, discovering such intricately carved, sixth-century ivory examples is very rare. Those that do exist are typically carved with Christian imagery rather than hunting scenes.
“We have not yet found any comparable representations on a comb from this period,” says BLfD archaeologist Johann Friedrich Tolksdorf in the statement. “That makes this find not only an outstanding archaeological discovery but also an important art historical source.”
A battle ax, lance, shield and longsword buried with the man indicate that he was a prominent wealthy person. In addition to the comb, the grave contained a pair of scissors that may have been used for personal grooming. The woman’s grave held preserved eggs and other food items, as well as a “weaving sword” used to tighten threads on a loom.
While most of the grave goods were produced locally, the bowl found in the woman’s grave was an example of African red slip ware, probably produced in what’s now Tunisia, writes Sam Tonkin for the Daily Mail. Such ceramics were widely traded in the ancient Mediterranean world, but this is the first of its kind found intact so far north. The bowl’s base was stamped with a cross, and its rim held markings that may have been magical symbols or letters spelling the owner’s name.
The team made the discoveries ahead of a building project in the municipality of Deiningen, where more than 100 ancient graves have been found since the 1930s, the German Press Agency (DPA) reports. Other new finds at the site include a double grave in which a man in his 20s and a woman between 25 and 35 were buried holding hands.
Deiningen officials plan to make the newly found artifacts accessible to both researchers and the public.

Strangers: Prey At Night - Thoroughbreds - A Wrinkle in Time - Episode 258 - Horror News Radio
Strangers: Prey At Night is the sequel no one was anticipating nor wanted. 10 years after the original and with none of the original cast or crew involved? It sounds like something destined to fail. Yet... The Grue Crew may have liked it more than you'd think. Strangers: Prey At Night isn't the only film on the docket, though. The genre-lite escapades of Thoroughbreds is also up for discussion as genre favorite Anya Taylor Joy joins up with a fellow teen played by Olivia Cooke with sociopathic tendencies. Yet, the true monster may not be who it seems. Plus, there's a small review for Disney's big release A Wrinkle In Time, the film that has so much creativity bursting at the seams... but maybe doesn't come together too well. Dave Dreher is out this week, so Doc Rotten, Thomas Mariani and Yonathan Habtemichael have to take on Horror News of the Week by themselves. There's plenty of stories of premieres from South By Southwest, a Jake Gyllenhaal horror film coming to Netflix and... Tommy Wiseau as The Joker? What a funny story, Doc. Ha ha ha! Then, Thomas closes things out by unmasking Phantom Factor! It's a packed night, but worth every second.
As always, the HNR Grue-Crew would love to hear from you, the listeners, the fans. You can always reach out via email at feedback(AT)horrornewsradio(DOT)com or find us on Twitter: Doc Rotten | Dave Dreher | Thomas Mariani. Also, like us on Facebook and join the Horror News Radio Facebook Group.

Box Office: ‘Black Panther’ Tops ‘A Wrinkle in Time’ in Disney-Dominant Weekend
LOS ANGELES, (Variety.com) – “Black Panther” remained superheroic in its fourth weekend at the North American box office with $41.1 million at 3,942 locations, easily topping the opening weekend of fantasy-adventure “A Wrinkle in Time” with $33.5 million at 3,980 sites, estimates showed Sunday.
A group of women pose for a photo in front of a poster advertising the film “Black Panther” on its opening night of screenings at the AMC Magic Johnson Harlem 9 cinemas in Manhattan, New York, U.S., February 15, 2018. REUTERS/Andrew Kelly
What had been pegged as a close contest among Disney titles for first place turned into a relatively easy victory for “Black Panther.” The Marvel title declined only 38 percent and generated the third-highest fourth weekend of all time, trailing only “Avatar” and “Star Wars: The Force Awakens.”
With $562 million in 24 days, “Black Panther” is now the seventh-highest domestic grosser of all time. It’s the first film since “Star Wars: The Force Awakens” to lead the North American box office for four straight weekends and it’s grossed $1.08 billion worldwide, 21st highest of all time.
“A Wrinkle in Time” opened in line with Disney’s projections, which were slightly lower than the industry consensus. Critics were mostly unimpressed with a 42 percent rating on Rotten Tomatoes, and audiences gave “Wrinkle” a B CinemaScore. The $100 million-plus budgeted film is depending on family audiences to support the film in the coming weeks to push it into profitability.
A total of 37 percent of audiences gave “Wrinkle” an “excellent” rating with another 38 percent rating it “very good,” according to comScore/Screen Engine PostTrak. Paul Dergarabedian, senior media analyst with comScore, noted that the key 13-17 year-old demographic gave it an 83 percent combined score in those two categories. “That is very strong and makes sense with the PG rating, the subject matter and young people’s love for the book,” he added.
Based on Madeleine L’Engle’s 1962 classic fantasy novel, “A Wrinkle in Time” stars Storm Reid, Oprah Winfrey, Reese Witherspoon, Zach Galifianakis, Chris Pine, Mindy Kaling and Gugu Mbatha-Raw. The film follows a young girl (Reid), her step-brother (Deric McCabe), and a friend (Levi Miller) as they embark on a journey that spans time and space in search of her missing father.
The weekend marks the first time in recent memory that films both led and directed by African-Americans have nabbed the first and second place spots at the box office. Jordan Peele’s “Get Out,” starring Daniel Kaluuya, led the box office its opening weekend in February 2017, with $33.3 million. The wide release of “Hidden Figures,” starring Taraji P. Henson, Octavia Spencer, and Janelle Monae, opened at no. 1 in January of the same year with $22.8 million.
Dave Hollis, president of worldwide distribution for Disney, told Variety that “Black Panther” and “A Wrinkle in Time” accounted for inclusion through their portrayals of strong female and minority characters.
“Audiences respond to seeing themselves on the big screen and it’s good business for us,” he added. “Representation and inclusion matter.”
Hollis also predicted that “A Wrinkle in Time” has the next four weekends during spring vacations from schools. He noted that Disney has traditionally opened a family film in early March to take advantage of the family demographic, as it did last year with “Beauty and the Beast” and in 2016 with “Zootopia.”
Cast members (L-R) Oprah Winfrey, Storm Reid, Reese Witherspoon and Mindy Kaling pose at the premiere of “A Wrinkle in Time” in Los Angeles, California, U.S., February 26, 2018. REUTERS/Mario Anzuoni
Overall domestic box office was $137 million, down 17 percent from the same weekend a year ago when “Kong: Skull Island” opened with $61 million. But year-to-date box office is up 7.4 percent to $2.31 billion, according to comScore. That gain comes largely from “Black Panther” and “Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle.”
The opening of Aviron Pictures’ “The Strangers: Prey at Night” led the rest of the pack in third with $10.5 million at 2,464 venues. Directed by Johannes Roberts, the horror sequel to 2008’s “The Strangers” stars Christina Hendricks, Martin Henderson, Bailee Madison, and Lewis Pullman.
Fox’s second weekend of Jennifer Lawrence’s spy thriller “Red Sparrow” followed in fourth with $8.2 million at 3,064 sites with a 52 percent decline. “Sparrow” has topped $31 million in its first 10 days.
Warner Bros.’ third weekend of R-rated comedy “Game Night” finished fifth with $7.9 million at 3,061 locations, declining only 24 percent to lift its 17-day total to $45 million. Sony’s fifth weekend of “Peter Rabbit” came in sixth with $6.8 million at 3,112 venues to push the family comedy past $93 million domestically. MGM’s second weekend of “Death Wish” followed in seventh with $6.6 million at 2,882 sites to give the Bruce Willis reboot nearly $24 million in 10 days.
Entertainment Studios’ action-thriller “The Hurricane Heist” opened softly with $3.2 million at 2,402 locations, and tied for eighth place with Paramount’s third weekend of sci-fi horror movie “Annihilation” at 1,709 screens.
Sony’s 12th weekend of “Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle” rounded out the top 10 with $2.8 million at 2,157 sites. Its 82-day total has hit a remarkable $397.3 million, good enough for the 30th spot on the all-time domestic list.
Nash Edgerton’s “Gringo” grossed a pallid $2.6 million at 2,402 locations to finish 11th. The Amazon Studios and STXfilms’ action comedy stars David Oyelowo as a business man who works for a company that had developed the “weed pill” and is sent to Mexico to handle the manufacturing of the product, but ends up getting kidnapped by a drug cartel. The cast also includes Charlize Theron, Joel Edgerton, Amanda Seyfried, and Thandie Newton.
Fox Searchlight’s 15th weekend of “The Shape of Water” followed in 12th with $2.4 million at 1,552 venues, up 63 percent as the studio added 720 screens of Guillermo del Toro’s fantasy drama, which won best picture and best director at the Academy Awards. “Shape” has grossed $61 million in 101 days.
Focus Features’ thriller “Thoroughbreds” opened with a quiet $1.2 million on 549 screens. Anya Taylor-Joy and Olivia Cooke portray childhood friends who reconnect in suburban Connecticut after years of growing apart. Cory Finley makes his directing debut with the film that features Anton Yelchin in his final on-screen role. The actor died at age 26 in a freak accident in 2016.
Fox showed sneak previews of its gay romance “Love, Simon” on Saturday night ahead of its opening next weekend in about 2,400 locations. Warner Bros. is also launching action-adventure “Tomb Raider,” starring Alicia Vikander, in around 3,600 locations. Both face formidable competition from the fifth weekend of “Black Panther,” which could contend again for first place.

EFE mg/hma/laa

Assignment # 1 - Getting Your Research Project Started
Data Set Chosen
After taking a good look at the different code books available for this course, the one that caught my attention is the AddHealth study.
As indicated in the course code book description, AddHealth is a representative school-based survey of adolescents in grades 7-12 in the United States. The Wave 1 survey focuses on factors that may influence adolescents’ health and risk behaviors, including personal traits, families, friendships, romantic relationships, peer groups, schools, neighborhoods, and communities.
Topics of Interest
The amount of data available in the code book is quite extensive and contains the appropriate data to explore my topic of interest: risky behaviors in adolescents in the United States.
During adolescence, some teenagers start experimenting with risky behaviors such as smoking, drinking, drugs or violence in general. Likewise, there are other teenagers that do not engage in these types of risky behaviors. This study will explore the following research question:
“Is there correlation between resident parents (mothers and fathers) and the different types of risky behaviors exhibited by some adolescents?”
Literature Used for Formulation of Hypothesis
In order to establish a hypothesis, the following articles and journals were reviewed:
1.    Booth, Alan & Scott, Mindy & King, Valarie. (2010). Father Residence and Adolescent Problem Behavior: Are Youth Always Better Off in Two-Parent Families?. Journal of family issues. 31. 585-605. 10.1177/0192513X09351507.
Abstract
This study uses data from the National Longitudinal Study of Adolescent Health to examine combinations of father residence and closeness which have received minimal examination but involve significant numbers of children. Our findings lead to a number of conclusions. First, adolescents who are close to their nonresident fathers report higher self-esteem, less delinquency, and fewer depressive symptoms than adolescents who live with a father with whom they are not close. Second, adolescents living with a father with whom they are not close have better grades, less violence and less substance use than those having a nonresident father who is not close. At the same time, however, not being close to a resident father is associated with lower self-esteem compared to having a nonresident father who is not close. Third, adolescents do best of all when they have close ties to resident fathers. A central conclusion of this study is that it is important to consider the quality of father-child relations among those who have a resident father when assessing the impact of nonresident fathers on their children.

 Abstract
A brief summary of selected results from the Virginia Longitudinal Study of Divorce and Remarriage was presented, with a focus on findings when the children were in their early adolescent years. The early adolescent years are of particular interest in the study of the effects of parents' marital transitions on children because, at this time, problems in adjustment may emerge or intensify in children in divorced or remarried families. Furthermore, early adolescence is a time in which there is likely to be the greatest difficulty in adaptation to a new remarriage. A developmental contextual model was used to examine some of the risk, vulnerability, and protective factors associated with diverse patterns of coping with divorce and remarriage. Abstract
Cohabitation is a family form that increasingly includes children. We use the National Longitudinal Study of Adolescent Health to assess the well-being of adolescents in cohabiting parent step-families (N= 13,231). Teens living with cohabiting stepparents often fare worse than teens living with two biological married parents. Adolescents living in cohabiting step-families experience greater disadvantage than teens living in married step-families. Most of these differences, however, are explained by socioeconomic circumstances. Teenagers living with single unmarried mothers are similar to teens living with cohabiting stepparents; exceptions include greater delinquency and lower grade point averages experienced by teens living with cohabiting stepparents. Yet mother's marital history explains these differences. Our results contribute to our understanding of cohabitation and debates about the importance of marriage for children.

Abstract
To compare two different parenting practices (parental monitoring and negotiated unsupervised time) and perceived parental trust in the reporting of health risk behaviors among adolescents. Data were derived from 692 adolescents in 9th and 10th grades (x̄ = 15.7 years) enrolled in health education classes in six urban high schools. Students completed a self-administered paper-based survey that assessed adolescents’ perceptions of the degree to which their parents monitor their whereabouts, are permitted to negotiate unsupervised time with their friends and trust them to make decisions. Using gender-specific multivariate logistic regression analyses, we examined the relative importance of parental monitoring, negotiated unsupervised time with peers, and parental trust in predicting reported sexual activity, sex-related protective actions (e.g., condom use, carrying protection) and substance use (alcohol, tobacco, and marijuana). For males and females, increased negotiated unsupervised time was strongly associated with increased risk behavior (e.g., sexual activity, alcohol and marijuana use) but also sex-related protective actions. In males, high parental monitoring was associated with less alcohol use and consistent condom use. Parental monitoring had no affect on female behavior. Perceived parental trust served as a protective factor against sexual activity, tobacco, and marijuana use in females, and alcohol use in males. Although monitoring is an important practice for parents of older adolescents, managing their behavior through negotiation of unsupervised time may have mixed results leading to increased experimentation with sexuality and substances, but perhaps in a more responsible way. Trust established between an adolescent female and her parents continues to be a strong deterrent for risky behaviors but appears to have little effect on behaviors of adolescent males.

 Abstract
This article examines the extent to which adolescents' expectations about their future in terms of health and education affect their risk-taking behavior. With data from the National Longitudinal Study of Adolescent Healthy we test the theory that a “nothing to lose” attitude about the future predicts greater involvement in risky behaviors involving early sexual intercourse, selling drugs, and weapon use. We examine the effects of both individual- and school-level conditions. Results provide mixed support for our “nothing to lose” hypothesis. We do find noteworthy school-level effects of “school climate,” including aggregate expectations, mental health, and the prevalence of single-mother families, that influence adolescent risk-taking behavior more than school measures of SES.

Abstract
Advances in research have broadened our understanding of the risky behaviors that significantly threaten adolescent health and well-being. Advances include: using person-centered, rather than behavior-centered approaches to examine how behaviors co-occur; greater focus on how environmental factors, such as family, or peer-level characteristics, influence behavior; and examination of how behaviors affect well-being in young adulthood. Use of nationally representative, longitudinal data would expand research on these critical relationships. Using data from the National Longitudinal Survey of Youth, 1997 cohort, a nationally representative sample of adolescents who are being followed over time, the present study: (1) identifies profiles of risky behaviors, (2) investigates how environmental characteristics predict these profiles of risky behaviors (e.g., delinquency, smoking, drug use, drinking, sexual behavior, and exercise), and (3) examines how these profiles of risky behaviors relate to positive and negative youth outcomes. Four “risk profiles” were identified: a high-risk group (those who report high levels of participation in numerous behaviors), a low-risk group (those who engage in very few risky behaviors), and two moderate risk-taking groups. We found that profiles with any negative behaviors were predictive of negative outcomes. It is important for practitioners to examine health behaviors in multiple domains concurrently rather than individually in isolation. Interventions and research should not simply target adolescents engaging in high levels of risky behavior but also adolescents who are engaging in lower levels of risky behaviors.
Hypothesis
After researching literature on adolescence and the effects of resident and nonresident parents, this study will try to prove the following hypothesis:
“Risky behaviors (alcohol consumption, fighting and violence, tobacco usage, drug usage and suicide) in adolescence has no correlation to having a nonresident parent.”
Personal Code Book
In order to prove my hypothesis, my personal code book will include variables on the following topics extracted from the AddHealth code book:
Section 12: Non-Resident Biological Mother
Section 13: Non-Resident Biological Father
Section 14: Resident Mother
Section 15: Resident Father
Section 16: Relations with Parents
Section 28: Tobacco, Alcohol, Drugs
Section 29: Delinquency Scale
Section 30: Joint Occurrences
Section 31: Fighting and Violence
Section 33: Suicide
Please note: the number of variables included in the code book is quite large. Therefore, only the topics of the variables relevant to the research have been included in this post.
