Guwahati's City Offset pushes boundaries with Ricoh
Tumblr media
Going by its offset printing background, Guwahati's City Offset is just a conventional offset printer in town. However, the company continues to transform itself by investing in new and modern machines to tap fresh market domains. The printer has pushed its digital printing boundaries with the purchase of a new Ricoh Pro C7200x digital color production press from Monotech Systems. Based out of Adabari in Guwahati, City Offset has been a cozy printing corner for customers from different market domains as well as industrial clusters over the last couple of decades.
“Geographically, we are pretty much confined in Guwahati. However, some of our clients come to us from other cities and towns of Assam as well as some neighboring North-Eastern states,” says Mrinal Chatterjee, proprietor, City Offset, adding, “We always attempt to please our customers with complete end-to-end printing solutions using diverse technologies, so is why we have added the Ricoh Pro C7200x.”
The machine portfolio of City Offset consists of a line of mini offset presses, digital multifunction printers, and others. “When it comes to digital printing, we used to run digital production presses from other brands. After we brought home the new Ricoh Pro C7200x, we rely on this press for every digital task. It has been amazing to intensify digital printing to a whole new level,” Chatterjee says. He says the new Ricoh digital press has whole new features to further explore and exploit.
Chatterjee says the advanced features of the press such as the fifth color station is what “we have to further explore for going beyond the basic CMYK printing.” Likewise, this press has many other unconventional features such as productivity, flexibility, speed and print resolution, he says.
Featuring the fifth color station, the Ricoh Pro C7200x can pull off vivid color printing, closely comparable to offset quality. This station is designed for printing neon colors for a high-impact blend with the usual CMYK. “We were impressed with all these outstanding features of the Ricoh digital color production press,” Chatterjee says, adding they hope to get new customers who would surely be amazed by the print outputs and capability of the Ricoh Pro C7200x.
The Ricoh Pro C7200x can produce print detail in industry-leading resolution of 2400×4800 dpi on a broad range of light and heavyweight stocks up to 360 gsm. “We are now capable of improving print quality and speed following the purchase of the Ricoh press from Monotech,” Chatterjee says. The Ricoh Pro C7200x is a high-speed digital color production press, engineered to run at the maximum speed of up to 95 ppm (pages per minute) with an expansive 16,200-sheet maximum paper capacity for longer runs.
Backed by a team of more than 25 printing staff, which include graphic designers, DTP operators, machine men and others, City Offset is fully optimistic to determine what they can offer to their customers on the digital front using the new Ricoh Pro C7200x.

Making Money from a Mini Farm: A Series
Selling fertilized eggs
Step one: Chose what you are going to sell
If you are selling fertilized eggs, then all you need is a flock of hens and the appropriate number of roosters.  But non pure bred eggs will bring a very low price and you might only be able to sell small numbers of these eggs.  It is much better to chose a breed of chickens and then keep only those in your flock.  Although you could always keep more than one breed, that would necessitate confining your chickens, which is not something I recommend.
Rarer breeds and colors will bring more money. Shipping eggs is pricey, so you will need chickens rare enough to make it worth it for your buyer.
Step two: The legalities
Your flock must be certified by the National Poultry Improvement Plan for you to legally ship hatching eggs. Most states also require a health permit as well as pullorum and typhoid testing. Talk with your county extension agent or your state’s NPIP representative to find out what you need. There are hefty fines for illegal egg peddling, so don’t omit this step!
Step three: Marketing
If you don’t want to deal with the hassle of shipping, sell locally. Pin notices on bulletin boards at veterinary offices and feed and farm-supply stores, and take out classified ads either in newspapers or online—such as Craigslist (Facebook often does not allow the sale of any animals).
If you’re willing to ship eggs, list them at online poultry auctions, such as EggBid, FeatherAuction.com and Rare Breed Auctions. You can also sell eggs at eBay and Amazon. There are several hatching egg groups at Facebook worth investigating, as well. While you’re there, run a search for Facebook groups devoted to the breeds you’re selling. Join and find people interested in buying.
When you place ads, be very explicit about what you’re selling. Point out how many eggs you’ll send. Eggs are usually sold in groups of 6, 8, 10, 12, 24 or 36. You can also include extra eggs to offset any eggs damaged during shipping. Including extras at the rate of one extra per six eggs ordered is a good idea: Seasoned buyers expect it, and it promotes good will. If you don’t plan to send extras, say so.
Hatching eggs are normally sold without guarantee. Even if you send fresh, fertile eggs, they can easily be damaged during shipping or your buyer may not incubate them correctly. Buyers usually expect a 40 to 80 percent hatch from shipped eggs.
Step three: Gathering your precious cargo
Washing eggs removes their protective bloom, so keep them clean by lining nest boxes with plenty of bedding, changing it as often as needed and collecting eggs several times a day. Carry eggs gently to the house. A towel-lined basket is good for this. Sort the eggs and store the ones you’ll sell as hatching eggs large-end-up in a clean, closed carton between 55 to 70 degrees F and at roughly 75 percent humidity.
You’ll need a hygrometer to make sure your room’s humidity reading is in or near the ballpark. Pick one up at a drugstore or online, and follow the instructions. It’ll show your room’s humidity level as a percentage. Boost the humidity, if necessary, by placing a small bowl of water beside the carton. Elevate one end of the carton by slipping a book or block of wood under it. The following day, move the book to the other end, alternating ends until you ship the eggs. This keeps the yolks from sticking to one side of their shells.
When sorting, set aside well-shaped, average-sized eggs as hatching eggs. Avoid large eggs that might be double-yolkers—these rarely hatch—and unusually small eggs, as they tend to produce small, weak chicks. Remove any with bumped, wrinkled or otherwise flawed shells and any with hairline cracks. A tiny amount of soiling is usually acceptable, but it’s better to send clean eggs. Remember not to wash them, though!  You can use a soft bristle tooth brush to gently brush at any crusted dirt, but only give a couple of swipes as to protect the bloom.
Step four: Shipping
Once you’ve sold your eggs, package them carefully and don’t skimp on wrapping material. Many shippers favor bubble wrap and shredded paper. They carefully wrap each egg in bubble wrap, leaving the ends open for air circulation, then pack them in a mailing carton with lots of shredded paper cushioning in between.
Eggs can be packed in any type of cardboard carton large enough to allow for plenty of cushioning material, but it’s hard to beat flat-rate priority boxes from the U.S. Postal Service, which ship to any state at any weight at a fixed price. They’re sturdy, free and sized exactly right for most shipments. A medium-size box is great for up to 15 eggs and costs about $14 to mail; the large flat-rate box holds up to two dozen and ships for about $19.
It never hurts to package incubating instructions in every package. Shipped eggs should be rested for 24 hours at room temperature before being placed in an incubator or under a broody hen. A good way to handle this step is to print copies of a university-generated bulletin about incubating chicken eggs and tuck one in each box.
The USPS is the only carrier that ships hatching eggs, so plan to mail your package via priority rate or, if the buyer chooses to pay extra for shipping, overnight mail. Write “Fragile—Hatching Eggs” somewhere on the carton and also “Do Not X-Ray,” as the postal X-ray machine’s rays could affect the hatchability rate. Ask your buyer if he or she wants the post office to hold the eggs for pickup rather than exposing them to a bumpy ride in the carrier’s delivery vehicle; if so, mark the carton, “Hold for Pick-up: Call (your buyer’s phone number).”
Contact your buyer to let him or her know the package is on its way and provide the tracking number from your priority mail receipt. Ask them to contact you when the eggs arrive and again after they hatch.

From Zines to Screens: Blending Technologies to Publish Your Work
From Zines to Screens: Blending Technologies to Publish Your Work
One of the hardest questions to ask and get an answer to is “What is my work for?”
Just a few possible personal answers to this for me are:
To create something new
To share my artistic self
To learn to make things
To engage with art tools
To meet friends
To attract mates
For revenge
To explore humanity, mine and others
To deepen one’s humanity
To discover internal resources and to devote them to transcending survival mode
To surpass my own limits
To learn a craft, any craft
To commune with natural processes (ink is largely carbon and water; paper is wood pulp.)
To be part of a tradition
To create and return to a ritual space
To annoy people
To impress people
To let me be me
To say, I was here.
You get the idea.
These form a sort of range from the social (meet friends, attract mates, revenge) to the personal mechanical development (learn a craft, engage with art tools) to the spiritual or semi-spiritual (to return to a ritual space, to discover internal resources), etc.
These answers are of course constantly blending. And with technology, the tools by which we make our work to serve these purposes are constantly changing.
I was raised knowing that the primary tool of my comics was ink, and the tools to get it on paper were primarily dip pens, technical pens, and markers.
Comics were black and white except when an extra expense could be justified, then they would be in color.
Often I began with ideas in pencils or ballpoint pen. Following my thoughts the way I learned in school- on lined paper, one thought after another.
And then drawing.  I learned to love drawing in ink. It gave me what I wanted, which as a young artist, was largely the social desires of art, to meet people, to impress people, but also to understand humanity. Along with the ballpoint pen and paper, ink was one of the tools I used to interpret the world.
The photocopier was the next step. (Though perhaps I’m skipping scissors and gluestick.) With the photocopier, I could distribute my work, send it to people, meet more people, find my tribe, and say I was here.
The remarkable thing was how profound art making came to become for me, and how ancillary everything else became, even when they gave me the same goals: at parties I could meet people, at art fairs I could distribute the work, to readers who would know that I was here.
So what was different? What was different was I enjoyed art making, and it gave me deeper things. It connected me to my better self, it game a connection to silence, and my better thoughts and feelings. It allowed me to interpret the world and humanity more than I knew.
So I drew and drew more comics, still in ink with almost archaic sheets of shading film, and I even began to create with the photocopier, incorporating more collage into my work, especially the covers.
I graduated from photocopiers to offset printers, which work from photographic plates and enormous machines printing hundreds to thousands of copies at a time, cutting enormous sheets of paper into 16-page signatures which together combine into 48, or 64 page books. (I didn’t operate these machines, I sent my work to people who knew how to operate them, or to people who knew people who knew how to operate them.)
When the books were being printed, the artistic part of the job was done. My dealings with the technology was finished too. I provided the ideas, the ink on paper, the envelope and the stamp.
Readers today will know where this is heading. Desktop computers and Adobe Photoshop came along next, and soon books were finalized and prepped on them, and soon they were cleaned-up and distributed them, and eventually 100% created and submitted and distributed via computer.
So everything is faster and easier. We can undo mistakes. We can meet the social goals of art easier than ever. So easy that it’s easy to forget the other goals.
And now the new technologies raise other questions:
Are we engaging with tradition when we move from brush and ink to digital emulators of brush and ink, or are we subverting that tradition?
Can a ritual space be flat and instant, like a computer?
Am I surpassing my own limits if I let the computer handle so much of it? If I can “undo”?
Are we losing touch with our humanity when we forego 3-D tools, which humanity has worked with for 200,000 years, or are we deepening it?
Everyone has to answer these questions for themselves. And they still need to be asking, constantly, because technology is changing constantly, What is my art for?
I run a comics art school, and I’m old school, so I insist that the students learn ink.
Why?
To engage with the tradition, to engage with art tools and to learn a craft, any craft. It’s NOT the best way to meet the social goals of art any more. It’s not the best way to meet people, it’s not necessarily the best way to “explore humanity.”
When I ask myself that main question still, I find the answers constantly shifting, and in the work I am creating, now 30 years after my first photocopied mini-comic,  I don’t always know the answers.

The Usages And Advangtages of Wide Format Printers
Printers come in many forms. There are wide-format printers for industrial printing that are so big that it can take up the space of an entire room. There are also mini-printers for printing snapshots that are so small that it can fit in the palm of your hand. Wide-format printers, on the other hand, are somewhere in between. Today, we will introduce the uses and advangtages of wide format printers for you.
Tumblr media
1. The Usage of Wide-Format Printers At the moment, wide-format printing is more of a commercial rather than a consumer venture so it is rare to find a wide-format inkjet printer in a home. You are more likely to find these printers in a printing press, a printing shop, in art and design studios, and in engineering and architectural firms. Still, there are trends in the printing industry that there is a growing demand for wide-format printers for home use as well. These big printers can be used for printing almost anything. Their more common uses include printing banners and signage both for indoors and outdoors, as well as CADD drawings used by architects and engineers. They are also used for creating military maps, posters, large photographs and gilcée art. But these are just the common uses for wide-format printers. Lately, there are new wide-format, flat-bed printers that allow a user to print on non-traditional media such as wood, ceramic tiles and metal. This development is certainly opening up new opportunities in the world of printing. 2. The Advantages of Wide-Format Printers What makes wide-format printers a cut above the traditional printing methods such as offset printing or silk screen printing? There are many advantages that printer service providers can see with wide-format printing, and among these is the fact that these printers can print on demand rather than by bulk. This can save you a lot of money and prevent waste in supplies if you only need a few copies of a printout rather than an entire bulk of it. This works somewhat the opposite of offset printing. With offset printing, you save more money by having more printouts created. That is because the cost in offset printing lies more in preparing the printers rather than in the actual printing. Wide-format printing is also viewed as more efficient. That is because wide-format printers work just like desktop printers. You open the document or image to be printed using computer software, click print and it will run on the printer. Other printing processes take more steps and involve more manpower.

Another advantage of wide-format printing is image quality. Many traditional printing presses cannot produce images of startlingly vivid colors, sharp lines and precise details, but it is something that you can easily have with a wide-format printer.
