Lyrically, the song is sexually suggestive, with Aaliyah promising that she is worth the wait.

The song was written by both Missy Elliot and Timbaland, with the latter producing the song.
According to her former stylist Derek Lee "Her look was really supposed to be about the pants and her swag, so the top needed to be very, very simple". He continued saying, "She has Jamaican blood and I've always been a fan of dancehall music, so you see her rocking two different colored Clark Wallabees, because Wallabees were huge in dancehall. I always wanted to pull that into it.

Th song peaked at number nine on the US Billboard Hot 100. The music video for "The One I Gave My Heart To" made its television debut on MTV during the week of September 14, 1997. The song was written by Diane Warren and was produced by Daryl Simmons.

Missy Elliott Going On Arena Tour
Missy Elliott is going on her first-ever headlining tour with Busta Rhymes, Ciara, and Timbaland. The rap legend announced the tour on social media today. All of them have worked together in the past. The Out Of This World Tour will travel through more than 20 cities in North America. Missy and Busta Rhymes are known for their colorful high-tech videos and fans are already excited about what their stage sets will entail. She stated that she was thrilled about making a few firsts including the tour and being the first woman rapper inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. Tickets will go on sale Thursday at 10 AM local time.
