Your Name
Tumblr media
Your Name is a great anime and definitely one of my favorites. It follows a boy from Tokyo and a girl from a rural town called Itomori. They both swap bodies and have to live each other’s lives on and off for some time till Mitsuha dies when a comet hits her town. It is revealed that the two’s timelines were not in line, and they were experiencing the same thing 3 years apart. This movie is fun because of all of its plot twists. This movie also contains some commentary about Japan.
The first thing that we see is the difference between urban and rural lives. Mitsuha spends the beging of the movie obsessed with the city life in Tokyo and Taki spends the second half of the movie searching for Itomori. They both have trouble adapting to their new environment and adapting to the new sources of ‘power,’ as Foucault describes it.
Even after they forget eachother, they still have power over one another. Misuha still moves to Tokyo and Taki still researches Itomori. These push and pull factors eventually end in their meeting again in almost a fate-like incident. But if we look at it from Foucault’s perspective this occurrence would not be fate for there is no great power pushing two people together, rather many different influential relations.
That being said, it could be argued that this anime goes against the what Foucault is saying because the god Musubi is what controlled fate because it gave Taki a second chance to save Mitsuha and her town from the comet. In a way Musubi is the one true power in this film. On the other hand, maybe Musubi is just a very strong power that when combined with all the other powers in the two’s lives, resulted in their meeting again.

Shinkai- Your Name
I believe this is the first romance anime in this course, and it was made quite recently as well.
The animation reminds me of Studio Ghibli's aesthetics. Even if you can't hear a word, just looking at the movie is itself a feast for the eyes. And the romance fluff was so sweet and breathtaking. Not to mention the anticipation of Taki and Mitsuha finally meeting, only for an almost tragedy to separate them was so scary.
I think the ending was more satisfying. While I would've liked to see them grow up with each other after the incident, for them to come back after forgetting each other is almost more heartwarming knowing that even if they forgot, just by crossing paths again they fall in love at first sight. Like reincarnated lovers can forget their past lives, yet the moment they see each other, even if memories are long buried, the love rekindles a long-lost fire between them.
Another beautiful thing I wanted to add was the symbolism of strings and life. Well, strings, time, water, life, and "flow" and "union". I know this wouldn't be a magical romance without meaning. I feel like just trying to understand it would take a whole lot longer and writing it would definitely bore readers. Still, I think the transitions between strings and the cords to the comet shooting in the skies seem random and without direction, yet it also has an order or pattern of nature it follows that is random yet brings a harmony that creates life. Scientifically, the random movements atoms have may seem chaotic because it is spontaneous. Yet, the order of each spontaneous movement creates a rhythm that leads to more spontaneity which in turn sparks a new rhythm of its own. All in all, the fact that their love is almost parallel and can practically explain the movement of the cosmos and life the animation showed after Taki fell is so amazing I don't know if my frantic typing can convey how it is seriously going to be stuck in my head all the time from now on.
If your lover/soul mate/not-romantic-friend doesn't write "idiot" or "dummy" on your face while denying having feelings for you, despite feeling lost without them, are you even in love? Not romance anime once again raising standards.
I also like how at one point Taki decides to be mature and not grope Misuha's body "for her sake" only to unconsciously start groping anyways. Arguably he is a teenager, but still kind of weird.
Also, this movie apparently connects to another movie, though the main characters are no longer the main focus.
One final thing I got to point out: the flow as seen through the diverged comet path. Watching multiverse movies, you know there are different timelines or endings. In this case, there are 2 the "good Everybody Lives/No one Dies" and the "bad, no beta we die like ---" ending. The comet has the main body, and then the broken, unforeseen part that diverged and struck Earth. In terms of endings, both the comet that went around and the comet that hit Earth are identical because ether way, Mitsuha's town got destroyed and the comet could not be prevented. In terms of what is happy or not, it's hard to tell. Is the blue comet that leaves Earth the good ending or bad? What happened or what should've or could've happened? Yet both endings are inevitable. Inevitably, the comet that didn't hit before comes back and hits Earth after 1000 years. Mitsuha and Taki may not have met in high school (or at least forgets each other) but they eventually meet as adults. Even if the timeline that Mitsuha dies in means Taki remembers her and they never meet again, they still got to meet anyways even if both get hurt.
Tumblr media
I remember hearing about this movie a few years after it was released because that was when I started getting into anime for real. I thought, eh, I'll watch the movie after I finish the list (the day I finish the list and not add a billion new ones that would take me multiple lifetimes to get to, assuming I don't keep adding new ones is the day anime must've died because I would rewatch all the shows I watched up until now because beauty in even anime cannot compare to how it captures the essence of this world's already perfect flaws in its harmonious complexion. I now watch for this course.

Your Name (Kimi no Na wa)
This anime movie starts by gorgeous visuals of meteors falling through the cloud and an ariel view of a town around a lake. We are then introduced to our 2 main characters, a girl Misuha the daughter of the town mayor and a boy Taki who is a high school student in tokyo.
This Movie has already won 16 awards and is highly regarded by almost all who watch it. I am no different. I must say this is a beautiful movie with amazing animation that is both visually and emotionally satisfying with an amazing foreshadowing plot that is very consistent and very easy to follow. This movie can be watched and adored by all ages and is a very nice watch.
With the animation it is some of the best i have ever seen, comparing to the likes of ‘Terror in Resonance’ and ‘Yuri!!! on Ice’, you could almost watch this Movie just for the amazing visuals it provides with every frame.
The story is endearing and enthrals the watcher until the very last second of the movie. The movie although shown begins to show the many different paths and threads of this this story only to tie it together in a heart wrenching and amazing end which does justice to the rest of the wonderful movie.
Genre: Romance, Drama, Fantasy
Length: 1h 52m
Origin: Novel

I'm sorry that this is 100% not one piece related but i really wanted to ask: what does kimi no na wa means? Like us it straight up "your name" or does it means something else?
Oh! No problem, it’s a good question! And the answer is yes! “Your Name” is the best English translation, but if you wanted to just write ‘your name’ in Japanese it would just be Kimi no Na. The wa is a particle- it’s used as a subject indicator and connector.
Here, it gives the feel of a kind of abbreviated statement or question (it’s impossible to know which without knowing the end of the phrase)- like, if you wanted to ask ‘what’s your name,’ that would be kimi no na wa nan desuka? Or if you wanted to say ‘your name is Mitsuha,’ that would be kimi no na wa Misuha desu.
So kimi no na wa does mean ‘your name’ but it also has the kind of vibe here of “your name is-?”
Also, bonus point and one other thing that gets lost in translation- kimi is in this context a very close and affectionate way of saying ‘you.’

Your Name Clip 10 (0:00 - 0:30)
At first glance I  see from my research of the principles of animation at the start of the clip Misuha’s run her arms are using follow through and overlapping actions her elbow is leading while the forearm comes next then her hands. is broken up the animation using drag. But in her run there is also secondary action being used, the way her hands communicate to the rest her body bring a more dainty look to tell that she is exhausted from running a lot. the staging of the shot is really considered through this clip, for example at 0:24 its presenting to the audience the clear view of the comet heading towards the town with the reflection. it’s controlled so the audience focuses on one thing at a time first being MIsuha then using the depth of field to capture the waters reflection. She also looks towards the water too communicate her actions to the next action leading the viewers to also look there with anticipation also being used.

Log Horizon Fun Fact #272:
Mizufa’s real name is Misuha Long (ミスハ・ロング), which she took from her adoptive father’s name. “Mizufa Trude” is the pseudonym she took when she entered the military.
Her background story is pretty long, but to quickly summarize her childhood story, she grew up in a harsh environment and quickly became acclimated to using weapons. In spite of that, she was captured by slavers and, during one of her escape attempts, was discovered by a viscount named Graus Long.
Though corruption was rampant in the area and slaves were usually returned to their owners in exchange for bribes, Graus took a liking to Misuha and took her under his wing, where she learned to read and write, ride on horseback, and honed her combat skills.

Plotholes in Kimi no Na Wa
- Why didn’t any of them tell their friends the name of the other person? They would’ve recalled the names they forgot?
- Miki Okudera, the girl Taki dated, saw and heard him read out Mitsuha’s name when checking on the death list, still she forgot the name too.
- How couldn’t they recognize they were in different times? They had phones, diaries and were at school/work, where you write down the date?
- The friends and family got along pretty well with their change of behavior, only questioning minor things. I would’ve freaked out since they were completely different.
- Taki and Misuha handle the body switch pretty well too, I would’ve freaked out, instead they casually go to school. haha
- Mitsuha visited Taki in Tokio, stared at him for minutes in the train and left her ribbon, telling him her name. Still he didn’t even recall where he got the ribbon from. (Ok this probably had to do with this we-forget-everything-about-each-other-thing but the forgetting process wasn’t occurring at that time.)
- Mitsuha didn’t realize Taki was three years younger, she directly assumed that he didn’t recognize her.
- After Taki wrote down the ‘I love you’ on Mitsuha’s hand, the line she wrote on his hand disappeared because he forgot her name, but some time after, she was able to read his sign, although not remembering his name neither.
- In the end they stared at each other in the train and run off to find each other, only to behave hesitant and almost ignoring each other again. The reunion should have been a little more emotional in my opinion.
- The grandmother recognized that Mitsuha was a different person in her body but didn’t believe the Meteorit incident. Set your priorities right granny!
I still loved the movie and was completely captivated by it, the Academy truly ignored that amazing movie... still I was annoyed at some things.
