Jamie Finlay - Sun Dogs - this is a debut album?! Masterful set from a bright new light in UK jazz
Wah Wah 45s are very proud to present Sun Dogs, the incredible debut album from composer, songwriter and producer Jamie Finlay - a unique blend of electric soul, spiritual jazz and psychedelia. A deeply layered and personal album that explores themes of love, loss, grief, and finding strength through turbulent times. With their expansive arrangements and complex harmonies, you can hear the spiritual jazz influences of Lonnie Liston Smith and Pharaoh Sanders on the two opening tracks, Destroy Create Part 1 and Rain Will Come. These are followed by the Ethio-jazz leaning Staring at the Sun, with its pounding baritone sax chorus and ethereal vocals. Next up is the stripped back psyche soul of Family, the album's first single, with a haunting performance from Ellen Beth Abdi. Parhelion calls to mind Headhunters-era Herbie, with its off kilter jazz-fusion vibe, and is followed by the bittersweet Give Back My Love, which comes across like Stereolab and Everything But The Girl meets Rotary Connection. Penultimate song Destroy Create Part 2 leads us into broken-beat territory, and finally, with it’s pulsing bassline, layered vocal harmonies and crescendos, the closing track, Daylight, is an optimistic future anthem, bringing to mind the work of Charles Stepney, the Mizell Brothers and James Mason. Jamie Finlay - Keyboards, synthesisers, vocals, bass guitar & percussion Ellen Beth Abdi - Vocals Kemani Anderson - Vocals Caitlin LM - Vocals, saxophones & flute Hannah McGuigan - Vocals Matt Steele - Fender Rhodes Errol Rollins - Drums Bryan Corbett - Trumpets, flute & trombone Chris Bowden - Saxophones Dan Carpenter - Flugelhorn Atholl Ransome - Saxophones Dan Gresham - Additional keyboards

Donald Byrd – Black Byrd
Black Byrd is a 1973 album by Donald Byrd and his first for Blue Note Records produced by Larry Mizell, assisted by his brother, former Motown producer Fonce. In the jazz funk idiom, it is among Blue Note Records’ best selling album releases. The title of the album inspired the name of Byrd’s apprentice group, The Blackbyrds.

Jason William Mizell (January 21, 1965 – October 30, 2002) known by his stage name Jam Master Jay, was a musician and DJ. He was the DJ of the influential hip-hop group Run-DMC. During the 1980s, Run-DMC became one of the biggest hip-hop groups and is credited with breaking hip-hop into mainstream music. He was born in Brooklyn, the son of Jesse Mizell and Connie Thompson Mizell. He began playing the trumpet. He learned to play bass, guitar, and drums. He performed at his church and in various bands before discovering turntablism. At the age of 10, he discovered the turntables and started DJing at the age of 13. He was high school friends with Wendell "DJ Hurricane" Fite, known for his 13-year collaboration with The Beastie Boys. He lived in Atlantic City, where turntablism pioneer DJ Def Lou Hauck taught him to crossfade. After a year of DJing, he felt that he was good enough to play in front of people. Originally calling himself Jazzy Jase, he attended Andrew Jackson High School. He became a DJ because he "just wanted to be a part of the band". Before joining Run-D.M.C., he played bass and drums in several garage bands. He joined Joseph "Run" Simmons and Darryl "D.M.C." McDaniels just after they graduated from high school and agreed to DJ. On Run-D.M.C's album Raising Hell, he played keyboards, bass, and live drums in addition to his turntable work. He remained in his childhood neighborhood in Hollis his entire life. He established Jam Master Jay Records. The label is most known for signing 50 Cent and Onyx. Jam Master Jay Records folded after Jason Mizell was murdered. His legacy includes the Scratch DJ Academy in Manhattan. The academy was created to "provide unparalleled education and access to the art form of the DJ and producer." Jam Master Jay was related to the Mizell Brothers, a popular production team for Gary Bartz, Johnny "Hammond" Smith, and others. Jam Master Jay was the father of three sons: Jason Mizell Jr. (who performs as DJ Jam Master J'Son), Jesse Mizell, TJ Mizell (also a DJ), and a daughter, Tyra Myricks. #africanhistory365 #africanexcellence https://www.instagram.com/p/CnrS-DJLggn/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

Kaito 👀
@saltiestcoconut boop!!
How I feel about this character: Literally one of my most favorite YGO characters. I thought Jack was the best upgrade from Seto, but then I found out about Kite and changed my mind. (BUT I still love Jack the most!!) Kite's so sweet and kind, and he's got, like, such a loving smile. I love that he loves his family. I think he and his dad got a lot in common, and they like to build robotics together and are huge fans of Doctor Fudō Yūsei, creator of the Fortune Project. But he's also down to earth and is patient with Hart and loves to spend time with his little brother. I think Kite is very nurturing and grows the most when he's surrounded by people he love. 🥺
I love that he's friends with Droite and Nistro.
All the people I ship romantically with this character: Yūma and Shark (OT3)
My non-romantic OTP for this character: Chris, Mizel, Droite, Nistro. Once Stolen becomes a thing, I think Kite would make good friends with Rio and Kari as well.
My unpopular opinion about this character: Nothing that comes to mind. Anybody just want to tell their unpopular opinion about Kite?
One thing I wish would happen/had happened with this character in canon: A date/hangout episode with Yūma and Shark. xD Or a day in the life of Tenjō Kite post-Duel Carnival. I think it would be nice to see him satisfied with his friends and family, working behind the scene to keep Heartland functioning.
Send me an ask! 👀 I've watched all the series.

"I have mad respect for athletes and have penned a few songs with more to give all the way around," says my friend, singer, and songwriter Cindy Mizelle.
Cindy Mizelle is the proud mother of three children. Her two sons are professional athletes. Devin Fuller, a wide receiver with the Atlanta Falcons, and Jordan Fuller, a safety for the Carolina Panthers, have had distinguished careers in the NFL.
Her incredible career includes Bruce Springsteen and the E Street Band, Seeger Sessions Band, Steely Dan, Billy Ocean, Whitney Houston, Dave Matthews, Duran Duran, Freddie Jackson,  Carly Simon, Alicia Keys, and Luther Vandross.
Cindy told Rolling Stone Magazine that growing up, she knew a singing career was in her future, "I just said, "I know how to do this." I played the flute, too, and I knew scales. Everything was a musical thing for me. And once I found that power, I was like, "I'm going!"
I met Cindy on Luther Vandross's Never Let Me Go tour in 1993. Cindy toured and recorded with Luther Vandross for over twenty years. She admits working with Luther felt like family. "I loved everything about him. I could relax and be myself, and he was so supportive. When it came down to my kids, he got them their first shoes."
Between gigs with Luther Vandross and the Rolling Stones, Cindy managed to squeeze the recording of her debut album, Cindy Mizelle, on Atlantic Records. My favorite tracks include the lead single, "I've Had Enough," "Smile, and "Back To Emotions."
Through Cindy, I met the talented performer Katreese Barnes, who was the musical director for SNL and won an Emmy for 'Dick In The Box." I styled Katreese for several shoots and co-produced her show, Rocket Man, featuring the music by Elton John.
A few years later, in 1995, Cindy gave me the gift of a lifetime when she sang lead vocals on the dance song I co-wrote with Keith Haarmeyer, "That Man Of Mine." The fantastic Brenda White-King also performed backing vocals on the record.
I'll always remember the day we recorded the song in Keith's one-bedroom apartment in New York City. After Cindy looked at the lyrics sheet, she asked me if I had a specific idea of how I'd like her to sing the lyrics. Then, to my astonishment, she said the chorus line five or six different ways, varying her tone and phrasing with each variation. It was the most incredible thing I've ever witnessed. I still have goosebumps thinking about it. The power and control she has with her voice are great, too.
I'm not Cindy's only fan, either. In her memoir The Meaning of Mariah Carey, Mariah Carey praises Cindy Mizelle: "To me, she was one of the absolute greatest. "Cindy Mizelle was the background singer. She sang with the most gifted vocalists of all time—Barbra Streisand, Whitney Houston, Luther Vandross, and the Rolling Stones. She was a real singer's singer. Cindy was that girl to me. I looked up to her so much.
It was also a thrill for me to design costumes for The Lovely Ladies (Tawatha Agee, Brenda, and Cindy) when they were on tour with Dave Matthews Band. Most recently, my boyfriend Joe and I filmed Cindy for Nils Lofgren's "Ain't The Truth Enough" music video.
Music is part of her DNA. Cindy Mizelle is the cousin of the famous Mizell Brothers (they dropped the word "e" out of their name), who wrote songs for the Jackson 5 and A Taste of Honey. She's also the cousin of the Ronettes. She told Rolling Stone magazine, "I looked them up and was like, "Oh, my gosh!" That was my motivation there. I'd play their records and figure out what they did. I started singing in the basement and in bands after that."
She mentions how Ronnie Spector always supported her in her career. It's a pleasure to spotlight this remarkable woman whose heart is as big and beautiful as her voice.

A-T-3 125 Run DMC - Sucker MC's
Sucker Mc's is the b-side of Run DMC's debut single and a pivotal record in hip hop. The most common line is 'it ushered in a new era of hip hop,' 'pioneering the new-school' and kick starting 'the drum machine era' (1983-1986) with its stripped down sound. It's been said to have introduced 'real hip hop' to audiences, 'saving hip hop from going stale' or becoming a passing fad. Fresh is the word and Run DMC were the first hip hop group to go platinum in the US, so the group themselves are also a marker for hip hop's commercial success. Being held in such high regard Sucker MC's has had its story told many times, but the first telling of how Sucker MCs came about are in the lyrics themselves
“Took a test to become an MC" - Run had been DJ for Kurtis Blow who was managed by his brother Russell Simmonds
"and Orange Krush became amazed at me" - Orange Krush was Kurtis Blow's backing band which included Larry Smith, Trevor Gale and Davy DMX
"So, Larry put me inside his Cadillac, the chauffeur drove off, and we never came back" At this point in the lyrics it's just Run, Russell Simmonds originally wished for his brother Run The MC to be a solo artist. Larry its Larry Smith of Orange Krush who, as well as working with Kurtis Blow and Run DMC, worked with Jimmy Spicer, "Love Bug" Starski, Dr Jeckyll And Mr Hyde, Starchild in those early years, and Whodini from 1984 - there's not enough said about Larry Smith
"Dave cut the record down to the bone, and now they got me rocking on the microphone” In 1982 Orange Krush released a disco track called Action. The beats for Sucker MC's is Trevor Gale's drum pattern from Action replayed on a Oberheim DMX drum machine. In the lyric this is Dave (Davey DMX) that cuts the record down to the bone. It's literally (Orange) Krush's groove
Run DMC are Joseph Simmons (Run), Darryl McDaniels(DMC), and Jason Mizell (Jam Master Jay)
Sucker MC's is said to take hip hop (meaning rap) back to its origin of 'rapping over a beat.' like you hear on Spoonie Gee's seminal track Love Rap from 1980. "Run-D.M.C's debut marked the start of a new era that saw a return to hip hop's roots in breakbeats, sampling and drum machines." What we have to take into consideration here is drum machines are still new and very expensive, the Oberheim DMX drum machine was released in 1980 and would have cost over $10,000 in todays money. I maybe wrong but I'm guessing when talking about going back to it's roots of 'rapping to a beat' that was more often than not that was a loop of a recorded live drum rather than a drum machine. The Oberheim DMX was released shortly after the Linn LM-1 in 1980, but the more popular LinnDrum didn't come out until 1982. The Roland TR-808 also came out in 1980 and was replaced by the TR-909 in 1983
"The mainstream was not quite prepared for the concept of breakbeats." - I'm getting these quotes from this awful article. In 1982 Malcolm McLaren releases Buffalo Gals, in 1982 in peaked at number 9 on the UK singles charts, and sold well around the world. Of course it's a bit of a novelty record but it also features an Oberheim DMX with a pretty sparse arrangement and was very influential
Run DMC's set up of emcee and a dj would become the new template of a rap group, although the dj would often get pushed out of the limelight. I don't agree with this statement "no major record label was willing to bet on a DJ over a live band." I've mentioned Buffalo Galls, that is The World's Famous Supreme Team djs scratching over the DMX drum beat and Trevor Horn el embellishing with a few samples from their new Fairlight CMI (is it the first hip hop record you use actual samples?), Grandmaster Flash had released the breakthrough dj record The Adventures Of Grandmaster Flash On The Wheels Of Steel in 1981, Grandmaster D.St is releasing records in 1982 and introduces mainstream US audiences to scratching in 1983 when he plays on Herbie Hancock's Rockit (most notably when he steals the show at the 1984 Grammy's). Then there is Planet Rock, Afrika Bambaataa and Arthur Baker are both dj's and recording in the dj come producer/remixer tradition of the disco era
I've seen Sucker MC's drum beat described as a sample and held up as introducing sampling to hip hop, "sampling was more stigmatised at the time." First of all it's not a sample is it, only if you want to call the sounds of the DMX samples, which would be technically right, but it's not sampling like you hear on Buffalo Gals. The reason sampling wasn't common in hip hop at the time is because samplers were rare and ridiculously expensive
Run DMC - Sucker MC's so good
