LG’s new Gram laptops include Arrow Lake, new AI features
LG has rolled out its Gram laptop lineup in advance of CES 2025, confirming Intel’s debut of the Arrow Lake platform in laptops and offering a mix of AI software that can run either locally or in the cloud.
LG disclosed two versions of the LG Gram Pro (the 17Z90TR and 16Z90TS), as well as the LG gram Pro 2-in-1. LG is adding a new entry to its lineup as well: the Gram Book, an entry-level lightweight PC with a 1080p display and a cheaper price tag to boot. However, LG isn’t saying what that price tag will be, or when these new devices will ship.
LG’s two new Gram Pros offer the choice of either integrated or discrete graphics. In a press release, LG said that the 17Z90TR will offer an Nvidia RTX 4050 alongside Intel’s Arrow Lake mobile processor. After launching on the desktop with mixed reviews, Arrow Lake should debut in laptops from LG and others at CES 2025. Since Arrow Lake (like Lunar Lake before it) emphasized lower power, it may find a more welcoming home within laptops as the latest Core Ultra chip.
So far, however, LG hasn’t announced plans for Nvidia’s Blackwell chip, the GeForce 5000 GPU that is expected to debut in desktops and perhaps notebooks as well.
Not all of LG’s laptops include Arrow Lake, however, though the company’s skimpy specification don’t indicate which ones. The remainder will use Intel’s older “Lunar Lake” chips instead, with their more powerful AI TOPS specification. (None of the new laptops use processors from AMD or Qualcomm.)
Lunar Lake’s AI horsepower will enable two versions of what LG calls “LG Gram AI,” specifically “LG Gram chat.” LG Gram chat On-Device runs locally on the PC without a network connection to preserve the privacy of the user, using a small language model that LG developed as an offshoot of its own EXAONE LLM. (LG didn’t release details of the LG gram chat’s parameters.) “Notable features include Time Travel, allowing users to quickly and easily revisit web pages, documents, videos and audio files,” LG said.
LG chat Cloud does require an Internet connection. LG’s cloud model is built upon GPT-4o, one of the latest GPT models, but will require an undisclosed subscription payment to use. (The first year is free.) The service will provide “detailed and comprehensive responses” to a user’s questions, with the advantage that they will connect with the user’s calendar and email services, too. It sounds like you’ll have to give LG permission to integrate your Outlook or Gmail email, however.
LG’s new gram laptops: specs and features
Otherwise, LG’s new Grams don’t appear to offer too much differentiation from other notebooks at CES. In fact, they’re a bit on the heavy side, with only the simpler Pro model weighing less than 2.73 pounds. The cheap new Book offering, though with a 15.6-inch 1080p LCD display, weighs a rather chunky 3.74 pounds with only a 51Wh battery.
Fortunately, the other gram models include premium displays, up to 2560×1600 on both Gram Pro models, with an 1800p OLED option offered on the Pro 2-in-1. Memory and storage options are offered up to 32GB on the three Pro offerings, with up to 2TB of storage.
All of the laptops support an upgraded version of “Gram Link,” which sounds like a branded version of Intel’s Unison app for sharing content across Android phones and laptops.

AI, Codewards and more react!
The past week has seen a flurry of new projects come across my desk that I've thoroughly enjoyed building. It's been one of those "give it a try" weeks where I found myself a bit bored and wanting to code as much as possible.
But what to build? Which tech stack do I try? Python? Javascript? Even... rust?
Coding Cup and Kata Challenges
There's the obvious task of learning how to use authentication in Next JS apps which would be very beneficial in work and so I can build some larger scale projects (such as my dog collar finder app - more on that soon!). But, it doesn't really excite me.
So I started to look online and came across this pretty cool idea that University of Sussex have started. It's a coding competition called HackSussex Coding Challenge.
youtube
I enjoyed watching other students try and find solutions to coding challenges in only 12 minutes! There were some that I found easy and was able to beat at home, others were a little trickier and it dawned on me that I do NOT know my data structures like the back of my hand. (does anyone?)
I realised that I needed to brush up on those skills, I want to keep on top of it - it would be a shame to forget those important interview skills. A quick google led me to a leetcode alternatice Codewars.
This kata based learning tool is great for me to flex what I know and build on what I don't. I've managed to get through 15 of the easier challenges and aim to do a few a week.
Forekast - The weather app
When browsing the internet for "easy beginner development projects" I realised that I had never built a weather app... And with my improved react skills and the use of some fancy frameworks (lol) I decided that would be a good pursuit.
Let me introduce you all to my weather app, Forekast:
It uses the OpenWeather Free API to pull through weather information based on either the GPS from the mobile device (activated at the top with the location pin) or with a simple postcode search. It works a treat! I ended up ditching the fancy frameworks and went with bootstrap, and yknow what - I actually like how it turned out. I'm no UX designer - don't shoot me!
Using AI to build an image editor
I was scrolling through Twitter when I happened across a rather scary and intriguing video of a man who built an image editing app and deployed it to Vercel within 30 minutes. The AI technology he was using is V0 or v0. This amazing tool, released by Vercel allows users to generate web apps from text prompts - it creates react components and deploys using Next JS and vercel.
I had to give this a go, so decided to do exactly what he did (because I am an original thinker). I used v0 to generate the app below, and I mean it when I say it took less than 5 minutes.
Everything you see above was generated with a number of basic text prompts. You can visit the v0 website here:
v0 by Vercel
A step in the AI direction
It seems everyone has jumped on the AI bandwagon and every dev project has some AI capabilities nowadays. I had yet to delve into this as it seemed daunting, but after a few watches on YouTube of some clever demos and tutorials I decided to give it a go.

I decided to use Chat GPT's Turbo 3.5 AI model and build a pirate AI chat bot that responds as though he is blackbeard the pirate. I thought this was playful and wanted to harness the idea of talking to someone who may be dead or did not exist. I saw a 9 year old girl do this with Harry Potter and it was really good!
It was actually pretty simple to send and retrieve messages from Chat GPT - I thought it was going to be so much harder! This was all done with Vite build React JS.
It's been a busy week, I hope to continue like this and get a few more apps done. I'm hoping to start building more in Next JS over the next few weeks and get that auth figured out.
The plan is to build full stack app that allows users to register their dogs with a profile, some contact information and these profiles will be attached to a QR code. If someone finds their dog they can scan the QR code and they'll be taken to the dog's profile, where they can either send their location via text or give them a call.
I'm hoping this will make a good final year project in University. Not long to go now, only 2 years part time. And I've already done 3 - it's gone so quick!
Happy coding, if you read this thanks - keep up to date by following the blog and get in touch!

ChatGPT users can now invoke GPTs directly in chats

OpenAI is pushing adoption of GPTs, third-party apps powered by its AI models, by enabling ChatGPT users to invoke them in any chat.
Starting today, paid users of ChatGPT, OpenAI’s AI chatbot front end, can bring GPTs into a conversation by typing “@” and selecting a GPT from the list. The chosen GPT will have an understanding of the full conversation, and different GPTs can be “tagged in” for different use cases and needs — jumping into the conversation with context of things that were said previously.

The move to make GPTs more discoverable comes weeks after the launch of the GPT Store, a marketplace for GPTs accessible through the ChatGPT dashboard. Building GPTs doesn’t require coding experience, and GPTs can be as simple or complex as a developer wishes. A few available today include a trail recommender from AllTrails, a code tutor from Khan Academy and a content designer from Canva.
OpenAI plans to eventually introduce monetization for developers who wish to sell access to their GPTs. But the company might have to get traffic up first. According to data from Similarweb, the web analytics company, custom GPTs comprise only about 2.7% of ChatGPT’s worldwide web traffic so far — and custom GPT traffic has been declining month over month since November.
Moderation is proving to be another challenge. In the first week of its launch, the GPT Store was flooded with “romantic” chatbots apps, some of which were sexually suggestive — a clear violation of OpenAI’s terms. Developers also rushed to make political campaigning bots — like a chatbot that impersonated U.S. presidential candidate Dean Phillips — another obvious violation.
OpenAI, which claims to use a combination of human and automated review to flag GPTs, has since removed some of the offending apps. But if the volume of GPTs grows as the company’s clearly hoping, one imagines that the problem is only going to become more acute.

ChatGPT’s First Anniversary: Reshaping the Future of AI Interaction
New Post has been published on https://thedigitalinsider.com/chatgpts-first-anniversary-reshaping-the-future-of-ai-interaction/
ChatGPT’s First Anniversary: Reshaping the Future of AI Interaction
Reflecting on ChatGPT’s first year, it’s clear that this tool has significantly changed the AI scene. Launched at the end of 2022, ChatGPT stood out because of its user-friendly, conversational style that made interacting with AI feel more like chatting with a person than a machine. This new approach quickly caught the public’s eye. Within just five days after its release, ChatGPT had already attracted a million users. By early 2023, this number ballooned to about 100 million monthly users, and by October, the platform was drawing in around 1.7 billion visits worldwide. These numbers speak volumes about its popularity and usefulness.
Over the past year, users have found all sorts of creative ways to use ChatGPT, from simple tasks like writing emails and updating resumes to starting successful businesses. But it’s not just about how people are using it; the technology itself has grown and improved. Initially, ChatGPT was a free service offering detailed text responses. Now, there’s ChatGPT Plus, which includes ChatGPT-4. This updated version is trained on more data, gives fewer wrong answers, and understands complex instructions better.
One of the biggest updates is that ChatGPT can now interact in multiple ways – it can listen, speak, and even process images. This means you can talk to it through its mobile app and show it pictures to get responses. These changes have opened up new possibilities for AI and have changed how people view and think about AI’s role in our lives.
From its beginnings as a tech demo to its current status as a major player in the tech world, ChatGPT’s journey is quite impressive. Initially, it was seen as a way to test and improve technology by getting feedback from the public. But it quickly became an essential part of the AI landscape. This success shows how effective it is to fine-tune large language models (LLMs) with both supervised learning and feedback from humans. As a result, ChatGPT can handle a wide range of questions and tasks.
The race to develop the most capable and versatile AI systems has led to a proliferation of both open-source and proprietary models like ChatGPT. Understanding their general capabilities requires comprehensive benchmarks across a wide spectrum of tasks. This section explores these benchmarks, shedding light on how different models, including ChatGPT, stack up against each other.
Evaluating LLMs: The Benchmarks
MT-Bench: This benchmark tests multi-turn conversation and instruction-following abilities across eight domains: writing, roleplay, information extraction, reasoning, math, coding, STEM knowledge, and humanities/social sciences. Stronger LLMs like GPT-4 are used as evaluators.
AlpacaEval: Based on the AlpacaFarm evaluation set, this LLM-based automatic evaluator benchmarks models against responses from advanced LLMs like GPT-4 and Claude, calculating the win rate of candidate models.
Open LLM Leaderboard: Utilizing the Language Model Evaluation Harness, this leaderboard evaluates LLMs on seven key benchmarks, including reasoning challenges and general knowledge tests, in both zero-shot and few-shot settings.
BIG-bench: This collaborative benchmark covers over 200 novel language tasks, spanning a diverse range of topics and languages. It aims to probe LLMs and predict their future capabilities.
ChatEval: A multi-agent debate framework that allows teams to autonomously discuss and evaluate the quality of responses from different models on open-ended questions and traditional natural language generation tasks.
Comparative Performance
In terms of general benchmarks, open-source LLMs have shown remarkable progress. Llama-2-70B, for instance, achieved impressive results, particularly after being fine-tuned with instruction data. Its variant, Llama-2-chat-70B, excelled in AlpacaEval with a 92.66% win rate, surpassing GPT-3.5-turbo. However, GPT-4 remains the frontrunner with a 95.28% win rate.
Zephyr-7B, a smaller model, demonstrated capabilities comparable to larger 70B LLMs, especially in AlpacaEval and MT-Bench. Meanwhile, WizardLM-70B, fine-tuned with a diverse range of instruction data, scored the highest among open-source LLMs on MT-Bench. However, it still lagged behind GPT-3.5-turbo and GPT-4.
An interesting entry, GodziLLa2-70B, achieved a competitive score on the Open LLM Leaderboard, showcasing the potential of experimental models combining diverse datasets. Similarly, Yi-34B, developed from scratch, stood out with scores comparable to GPT-3.5-turbo and only slightly behind GPT-4.
UltraLlama, with its fine-tuning on diverse and high-quality data, matched GPT-3.5-turbo in its proposed benchmarks and even surpassed it in areas of world and professional knowledge.
Scaling Up: The Rise of Giant LLMs
Top LLM models since 2020
A notable trend in LLM development has been the scaling up of model parameters. Models like Gopher, GLaM, LaMDA, MT-NLG, and PaLM have pushed the boundaries, culminating in models with up to 540 billion parameters. These models have shown exceptional capabilities, but their closed-source nature has limited their wider application. This limitation has spurred interest in developing open-source LLMs, a trend that’s gaining momentum.
In parallel to scaling up model sizes, researchers have explored alternative strategies. Instead of just making models bigger, they’ve focused on improving the pre-training of smaller models. Examples include Chinchilla and UL2, which have shown that more isn’t always better; smarter strategies can yield efficient results too. Furthermore, there’s been considerable attention on instruction tuning of language models, with projects like FLAN, T0, and Flan-T5 making significant contributions to this area.
The ChatGPT Catalyst
The introduction of OpenAI’s ChatGPT marked a turning point in NLP research. To compete with OpenAI, companies like Google and Anthropic launched their own models, Bard and Claude, respectively. While these models show comparable performance to ChatGPT in many tasks, they still lag behind the latest model from OpenAI, GPT-4. The success of these models is primarily attributed to reinforcement learning from human feedback (RLHF), a technique that’s receiving increased research focus for further improvement.
Rumors and Speculations Around OpenAI’s Q* (Q-Star)
Recent reports suggest that researchers at OpenAI may have achieved a significant advancement in AI with the development of a new model called Q* (pronounced Q star). Allegedly, Q* has the capability to perform grade-school-level math, a feat that has sparked discussions among experts about its potential as a milestone towards artificial general intelligence (AGI). While OpenAI has not commented on these reports, the rumored abilities of Q* have generated considerable excitement and speculation on social media and among AI enthusiasts.
The development of Q* is noteworthy because existing language models like ChatGPT and GPT-4, while capable of some mathematical tasks, are not particularly adept at handling them reliably. The challenge lies in the need for AI models to not only recognize patterns, as they currently do through deep learning and transformers, but also to reason and understand abstract concepts. Math, being a benchmark for reasoning, requires the AI to plan and execute multiple steps, demonstrating a deep grasp of abstract concepts. This ability would mark a significant leap in AI capabilities, potentially extending beyond mathematics to other complex tasks.
However, experts caution against overhyping this development. While an AI system that reliably solves math problems would be an impressive achievement, it doesn’t necessarily signal the advent of superintelligent AI or AGI. Current AI research, including efforts by OpenAI, has focused on elementary problems, with varying degrees of success in more complex tasks.
The potential applications advancements like Q* are vast, ranging from personalized tutoring to assisting in scientific research and engineering. However, it’s also important to manage expectations and recognize the limitations and safety concerns associated with such advancements. The concerns about AI posing existential risks, a foundational worry of OpenAI, remain pertinent, especially as AI systems begin to interface more with the real world.
The Open-Source LLM Movement
To boost open-source LLM research, Meta released the Llama series models, triggering a wave of new developments based on Llama. This includes models fine-tuned with instruction data, such as Alpaca, Vicuna, Lima, and WizardLM. Research is also branching into enhancing agent capabilities, logical reasoning, and long-context modeling within the Llama-based framework.
Furthermore, there’s a growing trend of developing powerful LLMs from scratch, with projects like MPT, Falcon, XGen, Phi, Baichuan, Mistral, Grok, and Yi. These efforts reflect a commitment to democratize the capabilities of closed-source LLMs, making advanced AI tools more accessible and efficient.
The Impact of ChatGPT and Open Source Models in Healthcare
We’re looking at a future where LLMs assist in clinical note-taking, form-filling for reimbursements, and supporting physicians in diagnosis and treatment planning. This has caught the attention of both tech giants and healthcare institutions.
Microsoft’s discussions with Epic, a leading electronic health records software provider, signal the integration of LLMs into healthcare. Initiatives are already in place at UC San Diego Health and Stanford University Medical Center. Similarly, Google’s partnerships with Mayo Clinic and Amazon Web Services‘ launch of HealthScribe, an AI clinical documentation service, mark significant strides in this direction.
However, these rapid deployments raise concerns about ceding control of medicine to corporate interests. The proprietary nature of these LLMs makes them difficult to evaluate. Their possible modification or discontinuation for profitability reasons could compromise patient care, privacy, and safety.
The urgent need is for an open and inclusive approach to LLM development in healthcare. Healthcare institutions, researchers, clinicians, and patients must collaborate globally to build open-source LLMs for healthcare. This approach, similar to the Trillion Parameter Consortium, would allow pooling of computational, financial resources, and expertise.

Breaking News: Siri’s AI Evolution by Apple

Apple is creating a generative AI version of Siri
According to insider sources, Apple is developing a new generation of generative AI experiences for their software lineup. The software engineering team has big plans to release major changes to Xcode, Keynote, Siri, Apple Music, and its own LLM Ajax, called “Apple GPT,” early next year.
In order to handle AI, Apple’s senior vice presidents in charge of AI are thinking about using a hybrid deployment strategy in the upcoming iOS version, combining cloud-based infrastructure with on-device hardware acceleration.
The generative AI of Apple Apple Music, Xcode, Siri, and more updates
Naturally, the most exciting development for most fans is the confirmation of an AI-powered Siri. As of right now, Siri incorporates artificial intelligence (AI), however there is still a lot of ambiguity about it. At its core, Apple’s mobile assistant is an information recall (IR) system rather than an artificial intelligence (AI) chatbot like ChatGPT.
While the latter creates original language that may not have been previously, the former uses web crawling to gather the most pertinent pre-existing information. Artificial intelligence is not generating; instead, it may be used to accelerate the crawling process or improve the relevance of material that is recalled. While generative AI, by definition, creates an output (generate and remember are not synonymous), this addresses the issue of data processing.
What therefore is to be expected from a fully creative AI Siri? Finally, the voice assistant will be able to respond in real time, just like everyone’s favourite AI chatbot, ChatGPT from OpenAI. In fact, it has been claimed that the LLM (long language model) being created for this reason is internally known as Apple GPT!
The generative AI movement is led by Apple executives Craig Federighi, SVP of Software Engineering, and John Giannandrea, SVP of Machine Learning and AI Strategy. Eddy Cue, SVP of Services, has joined the senior vice presidents, who directly report to Apple CEO Tim Cook, as reported by Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman.
The tech giant allegedly views the sudden AI frenzy plaguing the market as a “pretty big miss,” which has caused Federighi’s team “a lot of anxiety.”
Xcode for Mac and Ajax
Apple is hard at work on developing Ajax, a huge language model, in addition to a more intelligent version of Siri. All of the natural language processing (NLP) functions that we have fast come to anticipate from rivals ChatGPT, Bing Chat, and Google Bard will be able to be performed by the AI model.
Ajax will also have the ability to create and read code. This coincides with an upgrade to Xcode, the company’s proprietary software engineering environment. “Integrated development environment for macOS, used to develop software for macOS, iOS, iPadOS, watchOS, tvOS, and visionOS” has been Apple’s moniker since 2003.
Automatic text generation
For many years, autocomplete has been a typical feature of contemporary messaging apps. Nevertheless, the latest AI improvements will start to boost sentence auto-completion in 2024 with Siri and Apple’s own Messages app.
Playlists created by AI on Apple Music
In 2024, Apple will apply AI to its music streaming service, making it possible for it to make playlists in the same manner as Spotify. Playlists created automatically will curate music to complement playlists that you have personally assembled.
Is Apple’s entry into the AI race too late?
Meta has just lately caught up to the AI competition with a similarly extensive range of generative AI solutions. These goods and services include generative AI stickers, AI chatbots that will be available on Facebook, Instagram, and WhatsApp, and AI-generated advertisements. Apple could utilise Meta AI Studio, an LLM creation platform that lets other companies create their own unique AI models, for all of the projects it has planned.
As with every previous tech behemoth before them, Apple will, of course, create everything from scratch inside to maintain complete control and legal ownership. Although it would be naive to believe that any of the major tech companies in the globe were unaware of machine learning technology before to OpenAI’s November 2022 release, the Mac maker has already given every rival a several-month advantage in the consumer market.
It will get harder to keep up with each week that goes by because Tim Cook’s company hasn’t released an AI chatbot.
Apple is the latest big firm to enter the AI battle, following in the footsteps of Microsoft (via its partnership with OpenAI), Google (and its parent company Alphabet), Amazon, Baidu, Adobe, IBM, NVIDIA, and AMD.
