Le cinéma iranien se porte bien, à en croire l'arrivée de deux nouveau films sur nos écrans, «The Apple Day» de Mahmoud Ghaffari et «Les Nuits de Mashhad» d'Ali Abbasi. A y regarder de plus près pourtant, la réalité est bien plus complexe, entre censure d'Etat renforcée et contestation venue de l'étranger.

On avait quitté le cinéma iranien l'an dernier en apparent regain de forme avec Le Diable n'existe pas/There Is No Evil, puissant réquisitoire contre la peine de mort de Mohammad Rasoulof et Un héros, le dernier «thriller moral» d'Asghar Farhadi. Depuis est arrivé Hit the Road, premier essai relativement prometteur de Panah Panahi, et surtout, est tombée en juillet la nouvelle d'un nouveau tour de vis du pouvoir islamique, qui a renvoyé ses bêtes noires Rasoulof et Jafar Panahi (père de Panah) à la case prison. Ceci alors même que ce dernier a son dernier opus, No Bears, présenté à la Mostra de Venise... Mais que se passe-t-il donc dans ce pays placé sur la carte du cinéma mondial dans les années 1990 par les films d'Abbas Kiarostami et de Mohsen Makhmalbaf? Les deux films iraniens qui sortent ces jours, à une semaine d'intervalle, apportent un éclairage, à défaut de réponse claire.

Néo-réalisme dépassé

Premier arrivé, sous la bannière Trigon-Film, The Apple Day de Mahmoud Ghaffari est strictement du menu fretin. Un petit film de style néo-réaliste – le cinquième d'un auteur ayant milité en compétition au Festival de Fribourg – qui nous renvoie trente ans en arrière, lorsqu'il suffisait de montrer un gamin courant après des pommes pour attirer l'attention d'une critique mondiale prête à lire du sous-texte partout. Entendons-nous: ce style a eu son heure et ce nouvel exemple n'a rien de honteux. C'est juste qu'on n'y croit plus aussi facilement et qu'on a aujourd'hui plutôt l'impression de deviner un immense hors-champ.

L'histoire est donc celle d'un modeste vendeur de pommes en bordure de route qui se fait voler sa camionnette et de son fils aîné qui essaie de l'aider tout en rassemblant le panier de pommes (hebdomadaire?) que la maîtresse a demandé en guise de paiement. Cela se passe en banlieue pauvre de Téhéran et les seules échappées sont des souvenirs du père, gagné par la nostalgie de la campagne. On suit tout ceci d'un œil un peu distrait, en guettant quelque propos plus ciblé. En vain. Tout le monde reste désespérément lisse et gentil dans cette chronique dont les maladresses finissent par agacer. Entre la déploration d'un nouveau quartier de tours où la famille n'habite même pas, une course-poursuite entre garçons jamais crédible, un retour à la ferme inexpliqué et des scènes de classe lénifiantes, sans oublier ce deus ex machinafinal qui résoud tout (Madame, qui lavait du linge, a apparemment été promue entretemps), on ne voit pas vraiment l'intérêt. Plutôt l'œuvre d'un cinéaste excessivement prudent, qui se plie à tous les interdits en appliquant sagement une vieille recette.

Une nouvelle frontalité

Les Nuits de Mashhad (alias Holy Spider) d'Ali Abbasi est l'exact contraire: un véritable brûlot, qui attaque l'hypocrisie de la société iranienne avec une frontalité inédite. L'explication de ce «miracle» est que son auteur est un Iranien émigré en Suède à l'âge de vingt ans (révélé en 2018 par Border, fable sur la différence à base de trolls), qui a pu financer son film en Europe avant de le tourner en Jordanie. Le résultat était en compétition au dernier Festival de Cannes, où son actrice Zar Amir-Ebrahimi, une autre exilée, a remporté un Prix d'interprétation féminine très politique. Il faut reconnaître qu'à partir de l'histoire vraie d'un serial killer qui a sévi au début des années 2000 dans la ville sainte de Mashhad, le quadragénaire Abbasi en dit plus long et plus fort sur l'asservissement des femmes au pays des mollahs que tous les films iraniens vus à ce jour.

Ici, après avoir assisté avant le générique à l'assassinat sordide d'une prostituée, on suit une journaliste, Rahimi, qui débarque dans la ville pour enquêter sur cette quinzaine de féminicides qui laisse la police apparemment perplexe. Son seul soutien est un collègue local. En parallèle, le cinéaste nous fait suivre le quotidien du tueur, un vétéran de la guerre contre l'Irak devenu maçon, pilier de mosquée et brave père de famille. Frustré d'un destin plus glorieux, il s'est mis en tête de «purifier» la ville de ses péchés en la nettoyant de ses «femmes de mauvaise vie». Après avoir mesuré l'absence totale de soutien envers ces pauvres filles tombées dans la misère, Rahimi ne voit plus d'autre solution que de servir elle-même d'appât pour provoquer l'arrestation du criminel. Elle s'en tirera de justesse, mais le film ne se termine pas là, Ali Abbasi embrayant ensuite sur la réaction effarante de la famille et de toute une société complice à l'occasion du procès, véritable parodie de justice. Une hypocrisie instituée en système va même jusqu'à se retourner contre celui qui est salué par la foule comme un héros...

Vers un autre cinéma iranien

Des deux films, celui-ci est incontestablement le plus important. Mais il ne satisfait pas pleinement pour autant, tant sa forme donne à mesurer un écart culturel. Ici, c'est adieu la finesse de la tradition persane, bonjour le sensationnalisme à l'occidentale! Réalisé comme un thriller doublé d'un pamphlet, le film est certes prenant et efficace, mais la complaisance dans le glauque (plus Abel Ferrara à ses débuts que Brian De Palma), le manque de précision dans les plans (déjà une limite de Border) et le montage à la truelle des scènes de tribunal gâchent l'expérience. D'accord, c'est pour la bonne cause; et les comédiens, eux, sont au moins excellents. Reste à savoir si un tel film pourra être vu, même sous le manteau, dans «son» pays ou s'il ne servira in fine qu'à renforcer nos préjugés contre une nation qui mérite forcément mieux...

Peut-être est-ce d'ailleurs l'ensemble du cinéma iranien qui se trouve aujourd'hui à un tournant. Bien sûr, comme dans tout art sous contrôle, l'immense majorité de la production actuelle est insignifiante. Mais pour le haut du panier qui nous concerne, derrière le minimaliste Panahi et l'habile Farhadi se profilent déjà les noms de Vahid Jalilvand (Beyond the Wall, un troisième opus en compétition à Venise) et surtout de Saeed Roustayi (Life and a Day, La Loi de Téhéran, Leila et ses frères). Des jeunes auteurs apparemment audacieux, qu'il nous tarde de découvrir. A moins bien sûr que nos distributeurs, de plus en plus frileux devant la nouveauté venue d'ailleurs, aient déjà laissé tomber?

His family is in a dire situation, and needs your support. The bombings on Gaza have destroyed his family's home and source of livelihood. They've had to evacuate the school they were originally sheltering in as the Al-Abbas prison nearby was a target for bombings. They are currently sheltering in one of the overcrowded UN schools, surrounded by diseases, corpses, and garbage.

Mohammad is only 19 years old, and despite this has had to live through more than six wars and witness MULTIPLE massacres. His older brother Fathi is blind, his brother Abdullah has autism, his siblings Aya and Anas are unable to help and his brother Ahmed is merely 6 years old!!
