And then there’s her secret, which pulls her into the basement each night, drains her of energy, and leaves her bleeding. A secret that could hurt and even kill if it ever got out -- like it did once before.
So Mags keeps her head down, isolated in her small desert community. That is, until her childhood friend Nessa comes back to town, bringing vivid memories of the past, an intoxicating glimpse of the future, and a secret of her own. Mags won’t get attached, of course. She’s always been strong enough to survive without anyone’s help.
But when the darkness starts to close in on them both, Mags will have to drag her secret into the daylight, and choose between risking everything... or having nothing left to lose.

Ostertag quickly set aside her notes and addressed her publisher, Scholastic, directly. Specifically she has words for the book fair division. The book fair division was recently revealed to allow schools and libraries to opt out of offering diverse books at their book fairs. She blasted them for this, saying that it hurt not only authors who don’t fit the white cis hetero mold, but also students as well.

As a Japanese person who is used to reading manga, I find comics outside Japan to be so different beyond size, color, reading direction, and language that I wish there was a book explaining comics of various kinds and how to approach them. For example, I have read The Witch Boy by Molly Ostertag, Magical Boy by The Kao, Hound by Paul J. Bolger and Barry Devlin, An Táin by Colmán Ó Raghallaigh, and the excerpts of Franco-Belgian comics in the guide Invitation au monde de la Bande Dessinée (はじめての人のためのバンド・デシネ徹底ガイド, 2013).
Neither The Witch Boy nor Hound were divided by chapter to my surprise—especially Hound since it was first released in three volumes. Dialogue in Franco-Belgian comics are lengthy compared to what I see in manga, which the academic book Les échanges culturels entre Manga et Bande dessinée : Historie, Adaptation et Création (日仏マンガの交流 ヒストリー・アダプテーションクリエーション, 2015) has commented on.
Hound was created by at least two Irish people and edited by one British person (Hugh Welchman) but I find this graphic novel to be similar to a certain kind of Franco-Belgian comics like the works of Jean "Mœbius" Giraud. These comics have impressive art and imagery—and I love how Hound portrays Cú Cullan's berserk state and uses dashes of red in an otherwise black and white setting—but they give me little or no idea about what's going on unlike, say, Fullmetal Alchemist by Hiromu Arakawa. I have heard of the international popularity of manga—in France in particular—but I wonder why people outside Japan embrace manga so much when it's not like comics produced in their countries.

HOLD ON. Was anyone going to tell me the author of The Girl From The Sea, works on The Owl House, wrote Enchanting Grom Fright, and married ND Stevenson, the creator of She-Ra (2018), or was I just supposed to find out through a tumblr page with a Peridot profile picture myself?

The Witch Boy by Molly Knox Ostertag
goodreads
Tumblr media
In thirteen-year-old Aster's family, all the girls are raised to be witches, while boys grow up to be shapeshifters. Anyone who dares cross those lines is exiled. Unfortunately for Aster, he still hasn't shifted . . . and he's still fascinated by witchery, no matter how forbidden it might be. When a mysterious danger threatens the other boys, Aster knows he can help -- as a witch. It will take the encouragement of a new friend, the non-magical and non-conforming Charlie, to convince Aster to try practicing his skills. And it will require even more courage to save his family . . . and be truly himself.
Mod opinion: I haven't heard of this book before, but it sounds sweet.

Tumblr media
This was meant to go to work, but apparently we can't display solicitations bc as always the MLM huns ruined it for everyone.
So here it is! I was feeling very elementary school science fair when I made this and gosh I am delighted!
I'm starting bright and early tomorriw- I'm cheating a little by already starting 'When the angels left the old country" but it's so flapping good you guys!
Ok the organization is my local trans support project that provides clothing and other necessities to trans folks in my state. If you want to donate to your own, that's cool, I know in US every state is going full nazi on trans folks, just keep in mind SOUTH DAKOTA is a trash pit of human rights and were very small.
Heres the link. Any amount pledged helps.
