AKA: Everyone in this manga has a name that's a pun or a play on words like Ace Attorney and I'm gonna explain them to you from GF 1 to 28.

Aijou Rentarou - The first syllable of both his names, "Ai" and "Ren" are both spelled with different kanji for "love." "Rentarou" means "Feeling Love."

Hanazono Hakari - "Hana" means "flower" or "blossom" and "zono" means "garden". Her surname is a reference to the expression "Atama ga Ohanabatake," literally meaning, "flower garden in the head." This phrase is used to describe someone who is constantly delusional and imaginative, referring to her lustful daydreams and delusions along with the flower-shaped hairpins that she wears as a part of her character design. "Hakari" is also a homophone for "plan," highlighting her devious nature and scheming brain.

Inda Karane - Karane's full name is derived from a highly typical Japanese tsundere sentence "betsu ni anta no tame ni yattenain dakarane!" ("It's not like I did it for you or anything!") The "In" in "Inda" also means "hospital" which is where she keeps sending Rentarou.

Yoshimoto Shizuka - Yoshimoto can translate to "Lover of Books" and "Shizuka" literally means "quiet."

Eiai Nano - "Eiai" is derived from "A.I." and "Nano" is derived from "Nanotechnology," alluding to her straightfoward, computer-like intellect and mechanistic demeanor.

Yakuzen Kusuri - "Yakuzen" means "medicinal cooking" in literal translation, while "Kusuri" is a homophone for the Japanese word for drug or medicine.

Hanazono Hahari - Her name is the same meaning as Hakari's, fitting since she is also very deluded. Hahari also contains the word "Haha," which also means "mother."

Haraga Kurumi - The "Hara" in "Haraga" means stomach, referring to Kurumi's incredible appitite.

Meido Mei - "Meido" literally means "Maid"

Sutou Iku - Iku's full name is pronounced similarly to the Japanese word "sutoikku", meaning "stoic", as a testament to her high pain threshold.

Utsukushisugi Mimimi - "Utsukushi" means "Beauty or Beautiful" Additionally, "Mimimi" has the kanji for "Beauty or Beautiful" twice, and employs the noma kanji, which repeats the kanji that comes before it. In her full name, the word "Beauty" is written in Kanji three times, and her family name and given name are pronounced in On'yomi and Kun'yomi, respectively. There are technically four counts if the Noma Kanji is counted. Therefore, her name can be interpreted as meaning "extremely beautiful."

Kakure Meme - "Kakure" means "to hide", and the "Me" in "Meme" means "eye," so her full name effectively means "two hidden eyes." The "Ka" in "Kakure" can also mean "splendor or flashiness" referring to the beuatiful face that she keeps hidden under her bangs as to not draw attention to herself.

Iin Chiyo - Highlighting Chiyo's position at her school, her full name written in hiragana strongly resembles the second half of the Japanese word for "class president," - "gakkyuu iinchou." "Chiyo" also has the kanji for "award" and "wisdom," and "Iin" has the kanji for "school" or "institution."

Yamato Nadeshiko - The phrase "yamato nadeshiko," describes the "personification of the idealized Japanese woman." Typically, a yamato nadeshiko is modest and courteous, with long, dark hair that is frequently styled nicely. They wear traditional Japanese attire, and they resemble the kind of woman Naddy's family attempted to turn her into before she rebelled and became obsessed with America. "Yamato" is a term for ancient Japan, and a Nadeshiko is a kind of pink carnation whose name translates to "Japanese Dianthus"

Yasashiki Yamame - "Yasa" means "gentle" or "affectionate", and "shiki" means "spreading" or "laying out" like one would do with seeds in a field. "Sashiki" spelled in a different kanji also means "cutting and planting." "Yamame" can literally be translated to mean "Mountain Woman" referring to Yamame's large size, but "mame" can also mean "hardworking" or "healthy" and "legume" which means "vegetable."

Momi Momiji - "Momimomi" is an informal way of saying squeeze or massage. "Momu" also means "to massage."

Yakuzen Yaku - Like Kusuri, the word "yakuzen" literally means "medicinal cooking," and her first name contains the same word, albeit written in a different kanji. Kusuri even mentions this in the manga directly, to which Yaku responds that her mother named her after her favourite tree, Yakusugi Cedars. Furthermore, when written using the Goroawase wordplay system, Yaku can be written with the numbers 8 and 9 ("Ya" and "Ku"), referring to how she is 89 years old.

Torotoro Kishika - "Torotoro" is a Japanese onomatopoeia that describes something becoming loose and viscous, which refers to the state Kishika enters when she is babied. Kishika also directly translates to "Flower Knight"

Kedarui Aashii - "Kedarui" means languid, listless or feeling sluggish and "Ashi" a slang version of the pronoun, "atashi" often used by gals. Beyond just Japanese, Aashi means "smile" in Hindi, which makes sense given the constant smile she bears on her face.

Nakaji Uto - The kanji for Nakaji is also used in the word "Chuunibyou," a colloquial term from Japan used to characterize early teens with grandiose delusions, a strong desire to stand out, and the conviction that they possess knowledge or secret hidden powers, i.e. exactly what Uto is. "Uto" is also an alternative interpretation of the kanj "shijin," which translates to "poet."

Meido Mai - Similar to Mei, Mai's surname, "Meido" is pronounced in Japanese similarly to how "maid" is. However, it is spelled with the wrong kanji, which could highlight how Mai is an inexperienced maid in comparison to the perfect maid that is Mei. "Mai" can also mean "little sister."

Bonnouji Momoha - The "Bonnou" in Bonnouji means "worldly desires," and "Momoha" means "108" referencing the 108 worldly desires of Buddhist terminology.

Baio Rin - Her full name is a pun on how the word for "violin" is pronounced in Japanese, but also sounds like the world "violent" or "violence." Her name is also a reference to "Biohazard" the Japanese name of the violent horror shooter game series, Resident Evil.

Hifumi Suu - "Hi Fu Mi" literally means "1 2 3" in the Goroawase wordplay system. Suu also means "number."

Kaho Eira - Kaho's name is a pun on "Capoeira" the style of Brazilian martial arts that she practices.

Nekonari Tama - Nekonari contains the kanji "Neko" and "Naru", which when put together means "to become a cat." Tama means "beads" but is also a homophone for "ball" referring to how cats like playing with balls of yarn.

Saiki Himeka - "Sai" means "talent," "ki" means "strange." "Hime" means "princess" and ""ka" means "song." Himeka uses the first kanji of her first name and the second kanji of her last name for her stage name, "Kiki," literally translating to "weird princess" or "strange princess."

Dei Matsuri - "Matsuri" literally means "festival," and "Dei" is derived from the ending particle of Edo dialect speech. "Dei" effectively replaces the standard ending particles "desu" and "da," emphasizing Dei's cockney English dialect.

Usami Shiina - Usami is a short abbreviation of "Usagi no Mimi", which means "bunny ears." Additionally, her full name is a pun on "Ū samishī na" which means "Ugh, I'm so lonely," naturally referring to how Shiina is unable to engage in solo activities due to her autophobia

I decided to have a little redesign on them (especially in Ling-Ling) and adding a new Jiangshi roach, Xian Tie

They were not ordinary cockroaches because they were Jiangshi/Hopping Vampire/ Chinese Zombie cockroaches, they got rescurrected after Joey broke the tomb that sealed them. They now live together in Jack's house ventilation, they rarely cause trouble but they can be a little bit destructive if they were disturbed.

Momiji~A Jiangshi Cockroach who has been sleeping for 1000 years until the arrival Oggy, Jack and The Cockroaches. Unlike normal cockroaches, she doesn't die after getting sprayed by insecticide since she is an undead. Moreover, she rarely wreck havoc like Joey, Deedee and Marky and has no interest to join them unless they needed her help because she has inhuman strength. Her name is actually Momi Jiao but she refers Momiji instead, since she thinks her name is kinda ugly.

Ling-Ling and Xian Tie~ Momiji's sisters, they got awoken as well and noticed their sister is missing and the tomb that sealed them was broken. So, they traveled from China to French to find her sister. After that, they finally reunited with Momiji and get to know Oggy and the cockroaches more. Like Momiji, They don't wreck havoc and cause both Oggy and Jack's life miserable.

Thoughts on Fruits Basket 2019 2nd Season Ep16 [”Ask Him For Me”]:

This week on Fruits Basket, Momiji’s whole storyline continues being super sad, and Tohru basically spends 20 minutes having a prolonged emotional breakdown because she’s juggling like five different types of trauma at the moment, and most of them aren’t even directly related to her. Fun times! :)

Like I said last week, this episode adapted chapters 74 and 75, so we’re back on track with following the manga’s pacing in a pretty 1:1 way for a while. The next two volumes or so of the manga are pretty neatly divided into two-chapter story arcs, and this episode is a good example of how neatly that translates to the anime’s pacing.

At first I thought that the scene at the start with Momiji and his dad was anime-original, but after double-checking it actually isn’t, lol. I think in general this episode was a super straightforward adaptation that didn’t really leave anything out or add anything, but it didn’t really need to.

Anyway, I think as a whole this was a really good episode that’s gonna make lots of people cry, and for the most part I liked it, but I think it ended up feeling a little too melodramatic, in a way. Like it was trying a bit too hard to make the viewer feel sad. But honestly a lot of that just has to do with how this episode focused on some of the plot points that I don’t care as much about, so I wasn’t really as invested in what was going on in the first place.

This whole episode’s pretty much focused on the two threads of Uo and Kureno’s whole deal, and Momiji’s family situation. I’ve already gone over why the Uo and Kureno stuff just doesn’t work for me, and how it just feels kinda over the top, but I also have kinda mixed feelings on these sorts of parts with Momiji. I like him a lot as a character, but in these sorts of dramatic moments he almost feels unrealistic in a way that’s kinda hard to describe.

I do appreciate that as a whole this episode served as a reminder of how shitty his whole situation is, and how much he’s been having to hold himself back from his true feelings and desires for basically his whole life.

Which is basically the whole theme of this episode. That for all sorts of complicated reasons, everyone ends up holding themselves back or being held back from pursuing their wishes. Which can be particularly painful when those things are perfectly achievable, and the reasons why they’re being held back are relatively flimsy and arbitrary.

But on the other hand you also have cases like Tohru where the wish that she’s unhealthily clinging to is one that fundamentally can’t be fulfilled because she wants to be with someone who’s already dead. And that’s a big part of why she’s so empathetic toward these people who want to be with others who are still alive.

In a lot of ways, I think Tohru’s basically projecting her own trauma onto everyone around her, and watching all of these other personal struggles is just reminding her of her mother. On top of her just being a fundamentally nice person, I think part of why she’s pushing herself so hard to help everyone deal with their issues is so she can indirectly fix her own problems, in a sense. Which she basically acknowledged to Momiji, about how she’s doing this because she wants to, even if it’s also about helping others.

Even though I already said that this episode felt a little too melodramatic for me, I think that it makes a lot of sense that Tohru is reacting so severely to all the stuff around her. I’ve seen a fair amount of other people being a bit confused about why she’s breaking down so much, but I think it’s just a mix of what I said about her projecting her own issues onto everyone else, and also her just slowly breaking down under the weight of all the different things she’s been dealing with in general. It’s less that Momiji and Momi’s situation in and of itself is enough to send her into this much of a spiral, but more that she’s already been getting more and more aware of the struggles everyone’s facing, and how the curse is binding them. Which has also been making her confront her own repressed trauma more, which has just made her more mentally unsteady. So it’s just a whole lot of things going on at once that are making her one giant emotional wreck, lol.

Anyway, aside from all that, we also got the scene that first properly teases at Ren, and I was curious to see how they’d handle it. It’s mostly the same as in the manga, but I think they changed it a bit so that instead of having Tohru straight up think it’s Akito at first, they were a bit more ambiguous about what her reaction to it was. I think they had to figure out a way to alter it because of how Ren has a notably female voice, so having Tohru assume it’s Akito would be kinda awkward. Whereas in the manga there’s no voice-acting so there’s more room for ambiguity.

It’s not a huge issue, but I think it really just highlights how awkward that whole scene is the more you think about it. And in a broader sense, it’s yet another example of how the story keeps awkwardly having to sidestep around the fact that Akito’s a woman. And because of that mix of ambiguous writing, and them giving Ren a notably different voice to Akito, I can already tell that it’s giving anime-only people the wrong idea, and making them think that Tohru knows who Ren is when she actually doesn’t.

But anyway, that’s about it for this episode. There’s more I could go over, but I already ended up saying more than I thought I would, lol.

I’m assuming that the next episode is going to cover the field trip arc, since that’s what happens next in the manga, but I don’t remember what scene the episode title is based on.

Momiji was looking for Zen as he gets into the forest but as Hex said he should be here. He kept looking around for his angel for a while before he stops to see someone there. He noticed the familiar hair color but the same for the tail. There he was; his precious angel. He beloved Zen.

Hex was right; Zen was picking some flowers right now while humming as he held them in his arm. The water rippling around him while he was standing by the river end. He was holding the flowers to smell them then turns to set them in jar by him when looking for more.

Seeing he was there, he rushes over with a smile on his face. "Angel!!!" He cries out happily but Zen blinks to hear the familiar voice to look around. "Momi?" he mutters but as he starts to turn, he got tackled by him right into the water making a giant splash.

Both he and Zen got soaked as he coughs with Momiji resting on top of him as he had his eyes closed. "I found you angel. I was looking for you!! Then found out that you were....here." He opens his eyes to look to see Zen soaked but his hair was wet and his ears were flat down. He was flushed to open his eyes.

"W..were you? I'm sorry about that Momi. I was just collecting f..flowers to bring back to you. I figured you were b..busy with something so I c..came here to pick some.." he looks to him but Momiji was blushing seeing how adorable he was.

"W...what's wrong, Momi?" He asked softly even if he didn't know how cute he looked only for Momiji to lean in to suddenly kiss him as Zen squeaks from the kiss as they were slowly making out as he was still sitting in the water. The kiss was held for a while before he felt momiji's tongue rub against Zen's that he twitched whimpering when it got broken hearing Zen's soft panting.

"W..what's that f..for? W..was I gone f..for that l..long?" he asked but Momiji only blushed more to get up but carefully picks Zen up in his arms to pull him over against his body that he was blushing holding on even if they were drenched.

That's when Zen yelps feeling his hands touching and squeezing him. His soft whimpers slip past him to shake. "M..Momiji?" he gets near the water still warm but Momiji didn't mind that, due to being focused on his fiance to kiss him deeper. He twitched feeling the kiss but he whimpers to wrap his arms around him as they kiss slowly as he was feeling Momiji touch his chest to open up his kimono a bit.

The touch sent shivers down Zen's back before he breaks the kiss panting out his pleasure. "W..w..wait..m.my b..body....i..it's.." He tries to warn him but shook feeling his fingers lowering down as he felt his fiance now kissing his neck to hear birds. His head lowering to now kiss his chest leaving love bites on him. It did earn him squeaks and hisses from the pleasure.
