“Police Make Additional Arrests For Underweight Coal Deliveries,” Montreal Gazette. August 5, 1942. Page 11. ---- With two more arrests yesterday in connection with short-weight deliveries of coal, there were indications that the authorities were paying closer attention to the protection of householders and that drivers and helpers mulcting the public were the target of increased surveillance. 

The arrests yesterday of drivers delivering coal in Lachine brought to four the number of arrests made during the past two days. Other arrests are mooted for the near future. The first two men, arrested when they delivered a load of coal to a detective's house, pleaded guilty in court.. 

Those held yesterday for court arraignment today on charges of conspiracy and theft are Adolphe Briere, 27, and Ernest Prevost, 24. They were taken into custody by Inspectors E. Paquette and W. Coady of the Broderick Service assisted by Det.-Sgt. C. Thibodeau. 

Briere and Prevost were arrested on warrants charging them with conspiracy to steal and theft of 2.050 pounds of coal from E. F. Cutts. 72 Sixty-Seventh avenue. Lachine. The coal, missing from a seven-ton load, was reported sold to a Cote St. Paul Coal Deliveries householder whose purchase is be ing investigated. 

Detectives insisted yesterday that arrests to date crew out of complaints made to the police and that no "special campaign" was being pressed. Reports of further imminent arrests, however, tended to show that at least increased surveillance is being undertaken to prevent further frauds in coal deliveries. 

Sentence was set for Thursday when Eugene Gailloux 24, 4145 Rt-vard street, and Ernest Richer, 24, 182 Lagauchetiere street east, pleaded guilty before Judge F. X. Lacoursiere yesterday morning to a charge of stealing 16 bags of coal worth $19, the property of Det.-Sgt. John Brooks. 4459 Fabre street. 

The pair were taken into custody shortly after they delivered coal to the Brooks home Monday afternoon. Suspicious of the weight of the load, Insps. Emile Paquette and William Coady, of the Broderick Detective Service, had the coal weighed. It was found to.be short by 1,780 pounds. 

Further investigation Indicated that part of the coal, being delivered from the waterfront, had been unloaded at a Demontigny street east coal yard.
