Static

It was the same every night. They would eat dinner together then Mordikai would read while Kate and Ted played with their toys. While they stayed in the living room their grandma would go into her room and watch TV. What she was watching they had no idea as she kept her door firmly shut and scolded them if they ever tried to open the door. Mordikai had once tried listening in but all he had heard was static. Then exactly two hours later she would come down and instruct the twins to go to bed before sitting and doing a puzzle or playing a board game with Mordikai, before going to bed herself while he went to his own bed that was hidden behind a screen in the living room.

‘Grandma why do you get to watch TV and we don’t?’ Kate asked one night at dinner. Their grandmother smiled. ‘I don’t want it rotting your little brains.’ ‘But that’s silly.’ Ted argued. ‘My friends watch TV and they’re fine.’ Their grandma’s smile faltered. ‘Don’t argue with your elders Ted.’ He opened his mouth again but shut it again when Mordikai gave him a kick in the knee. When they’d finished eating their Grandmother went upstairs while the three siblings cleared the table and washed the dishes. ‘You didn’t have to kick me.’ Ted grumbled. ‘Well you should have kept your mouth shut.’ Mordikai scolded. His brother pulled a pouty face. ‘It’s not fair! We’d get to watch TV if mummy was still around.’ ‘You think I don’t know that.’ He grumbled. Their mum had died giving birth to the twins six years ago when Mordikai was eight. They’d been living with their Grandmother ever since. ‘But you’re right about one thing. It isn’t fair how she gets to watch TV and we don’t.’ It was also very odd he thought. The TV was the only electronic in the house not including the smoke alarm. The house was lit by candles and gas lamps and they used a gramophone to listen to music. Mordikai wasn’t even aloud to have a phone. “Tell you what. This Saturday when she goes to her lunch club we’ll go into her room and watch some TV.” The twins looked at each other before nodding vigorously.

The three children waved from the window as the minibus drove away. As soon as it turned the corner the twins raced upstairs with Mordikai in pursuit. Giggling nervously Kate pushed the door open and they all slipped inside. They looked around the room. It was the same dusty pink as the living room. Most of the floor space was taken up by a queen sized bed, which was covered in throw pillows. The only other furniture in the room was a chest of drawers with an old TV set sat on top. The twins climbed onto the bed while Mordikai turned the TV on. The screen flickered into life to reveal static. He turned the knob until a picture came onto the screen. A bird of paradise hopped along a tree branch while a man explained what it was doing. The colour was dull and every now and then the screen would flicker, but they didn’t care. Mordikai jumped onto the bed and lay back against the pillows. The twins sat at the end fidgeting excitedly. With the combination of the man’s gentle voice and the soft pillows Mordikai felt himself starting to doze. His skin was starting to tingle but even that wasn’t enough to keep him awake. Eventually his eyes closed and he fell fast asleep.

Mordikai was awoken by the sound of screaming. He sat bolt upright to see his grandmother race towards the TV and yank the plug out. She turned to face him her face a picture of rage. “What were you thinking?” Mordikai stared at her in shock. He knew she’d be angry if she caught them but he wasn’t expecting her to be this angry. He opened his mouth to explain but no sound came out. Shaking he tried to climb off the bed only to find he couldn’t move his legs. Dreading what he would find he looked down to see his legs were gone. He opened his mouth in a silent scream. Tears started pouring down his face as he shook in fear. His grandmother walked over to him and cupped his head in her hands. “Mordikai were Ted and Kate in here with you?” He nodded slowly. She let go of his face and made her way over to the TV. Still shaking he watched as she plugged it back in a switched it on. Leaning to the side he tried to see what she was doing but all he could see was her back. When she stepped away he saw she had turned it back to static. He watched in confusion and horror as the static seemed to jump out of the screen and attach itself to his skin. It grew and grew until it formed the shape of two legs. “Mordikai.” He looked up to see Ted and Kate standing there with a man he recognised from old photos. It was their grandfather. “Mordikai what happened?” Kate’s mouth didn’t move but he heard her voice clearly in his head. “Kate, Ted. Are you ok?” his voice sounded strange, like it wasn’t coming from him but from the TV speakers. “I’m scared.” Ted sobbed. Mordikai climbed off the bed, surprised to find the static legs could take his weight. He made his way over to the twins and tried to put his hand on Ted’s shoulder. It fell straight through him the only sign he’d touched him being a tingling sensation in his hand. Now he was closer he could see his sibling were flickering like the image on the TV screen. He looked at his grandmother tears streaming down his face. “What’s happening?” he asked. His grandmother wouldn’t look at him. “You didn’t listen. They never do. Now your siblings are trapped in the TV and you’re trapped in this room.” She looked at him a cold look in her eyes. “I hope you’re happy with yourself?” With a howling sob Mordikai threw himself to the ground and wept. Clumsily his grandmother yanked him to his feet and pushed him onto the bed. “It’s time to sleep my dears. I’ll see you tomorrow.” Ignoring the twin’s cries in protest she reached for the TV and switched it off. The last thing Mordikai saw was his grandfather place a hand on each of their shoulders, before they flickered and disappeared completely. Opening his mouth to protest Mordikai found no sound would come out. He looked at his grandmother silently demanding an answer. She made her way over to him she stroked his hair and sighed. “At least I don’t have to worry about you kids ever leaving me.”

Oh, we don’t mind stalking. This is my first reaction, I hope you enjoy it! I’m doing ot12 if you don’t mind.

Xiumin - he might feel a little insulted, I mean, he’s right there in front of you! “Hi Hello. The boy you’re freaking out over, right here. Remember me?”

Luhan - as the great DJ Khaled said, ‘another one,’ he’s another one to be insulted. “You’re on the floor, rolling around like a fish out of water. WHY?! This is bull!”

Kris - I feel that he would get cocky, cause you just proved yourself that you wouldn’t look at another guy the way you look at him. “I’m the best, and I always will be the best.”

Suho - regret. That is all. “I’ve taught you better than this..I’ll let you buy whatever you want if you stop all of this.”

Lay - I think he would be very awkward to just find you, screaming into a pillow, because of a picture. “Your ovaries are exploding? My butt is cute? Jagiya, are you okay?”

Baekhyun - he would fangirl right along with you. “I know! My butt is cute, I’ve been doing a lot more squats.”

Chen - Chen would walk into the room and hear his high note being played. With a huge smile on his face, laughing, “why?”

Kyungsoo - he would get very blushy and shy. “Jagiya, I’m right here! Stop flopping like a fish out of water.”

Tao - walks in and sees you squirming over his martial arts. “Everytime I come over, you do this!”

Kai - this koala would also be one of them to get offended, wanna know why? He always takes you to practices and you don’t do this when he’s dancing there. “You only do this here! Why not do it where people can see how much you love me?!”

Sehun - this maknae would do it 10x as worse, he’s going to show you what’s it’s like to deal with it. “WOW, look at G-Dragon from big bang. His tattoos are so hawt and don’t get me started on his hair!”
