uhhh this episode was dogshit for the first ten minutes, and then for the most part was just mediocre if not just bad. the audio mixing was bad, the voice acting & delivery horribly mid, especially for the high stakes here, like cmon ally a little more emotion would be nice i refuse to hype up yul but my god his actor is the best of all; and then just. i realized how much this finale fucking sucks and how i genuinely do not care for these characters and how badly the show WANTS me to care for them. they’re trying SO HARD. it’s SO FUNNY

i believe emily is the worst written on the show, and she deserved so much better. she was hyped up for nothing and her villain arc came out of nowhere. my theory is, ONC knew how little chemistry trevek actually have, and how much better tremily is, so they decided to make emily a villain so she wouldn’t get between the ship. which is laughable, and such cheap writing.

i’m glad you think, just like me, that they announced some of the cast as queer just for people to call them progressive and praise them. i’m fine with having a few characters not mention their queer identity and still be queer - i’m basically doing this with my own original story - because it can sometimes get exhausting to hear everyone outright stating their identity. it’s not in-character for everyone.

but when you have over half the cast never mention or show queerness then they just appear in the pride posts... red flag. trevek is a MAJOR example of fan service and stuff like this: they had zero chemistry, derek was always a dick to trevor, and now, somehow, for some reason, trevor is in love with derek AND we have a SECOND LOVE TRIANGLE. another few examples: huntessally never got together and never once mentioned queerness despite being set up to do both, and guess what? they’re portrayed in official art always together, with bi and pan flags respectively, despite never ever mentioning anything. karol was there for 0.2 seconds, but ONC realized they don’t have enough lesbians and forgot about trans and aspec people and decided to make her a lesbian. dan was probably made asexual just because his color scheme is purple, and emily is “part of the LGBT community” because the majority of fans hc-ed her that way so god forbid they are let down. they didn’t even tell us if she had a specific label, was unlabelled, or simply labelled herself as queer. what a slap in the face.

if you want to represent queer people, do it well. do your research. don’t make your characters gasp at the mention of a trans person (seriously what the FUCK). don’t include a kissing challenge because romance-repulsed/touch-repulsed people and/or aspec people simply could not do it. if you want to have a stereotypical queer character, that’s fine as long they have a personality outside of it and there is at least another character with the same label who does not adhere to the norm.

i dont know abt the rest of yall but episode 12 was such a huge win for jakeden (platonic or romantic) fans, likee??

u could argue that it would actually be a jam/tomjake win bc they almost kissed and tom promised him closure and all that, blah blah blah, but i dont give a FUCK, im a multi shipper, and thats not what we’re talking abt rn anyways 😔😔

i stand by what i said last week- i think it would have made more sense to have one more challenge first. merge now gave the villains such a clear advantage.

that said, my theory was one villain gets cut and the drama becomes "the heroes all have to work together to win" and that did happen, it was just "to tie" instead.

mainly feels weird because i know the writers control everything but in-universe the decision to merge seems hugely biased in favor of the villains.

aiden and jake

this conflict is really funny to me because it really makes no sense. or at least not originally. so at this point the beef is really just they've been beefing so long they can't fix it.

(ultimately this is why the whole thing is tom's fault. if they'd addressed it earlier it could've been fixed, but he literally waited until the last possible second to try)

absolutely makes sense for the villains to use this to vote out ashley, since it's the only way she was losing. tdi bridgette "voted out for being liked too much" move.

honestly, i'm not sure how i feel about this one. the beef feels a bit more manufactured somehow, and unlike the beef with aiden it doesn't feel like it's been building long enough for them to not be able to put aside their differences.

also i'm disappointed we didn't get much of anything about ally re: tess leaving. i was really expecting something big there, especially with the whole thing about her being more okay with hunter gone than she'd thought. instead they just brought up hunter again?

idk i think this part fell flat to me. i think them continuing to fight doesn't really feel natural. but maybe we'll get more ally next time.

y'know i've seen a lot of people complain about the jake vs. aiden plot being way too drawn out, but for me that's shitty boyfriend yul.

i get that leaving abusive relationships is hard. and i get that grett doesn't want to accept that the guy she thought loved her is an asshole. but also every other villain is on record saying "that guy's such a shitty boyfriend and we hate him for it" and nothing ever happens?

like i'm not mad from an in-universe standpoint, because it does make sense why they'd keep him around for alliance purposes. but it's really frustrating as a viewer to have the show keep going "look how awful this guy is! he sucks! everyone knows he sucks! no consequences tho :)"

like i'm sure it's gonna be really cathartic when grett finally sticks up to him or whatever, and i'm guessing this is gonna be the spark of internal conflict that blows up the villain team and makes the competition viable again but like. it's not fun to watch?

predictions

i mean so based on the trailer it looks like the eliminated contestants come back and everyone gets a buddy. in which case i do get why they merged at 10 instead of 9, but i still don't love it.

i thought emily getting caught might affect yul literally at all but it looks like instead that's just motivating trevek plot which. fine.

obviously the main conflict here is villains vs. others, which is now a 5v4. so unless something changes with immunity or voting or whatever, i think the villain team internal conflict needs to finally happen (please please please).

i'm so looking forward to alec and fiore. i don't care what else happens i love them.

other than that i am hoping to finally get that tess/ally thing i was hoping for. the fact that (i think?) they're working together over hunter and ally is promising.

idk what else to expect at this point. i think it'd be really funny if jake and aiden manage to be friends all of a sudden now that their beef has had consequences. also curious how ellie returning affects gabby's villain arc.

initial thoughts on DCAS episode 6

THIS EPISODE WAS SO GOOD!!! the fact that it was a musical episode is totally the cherry on top; i love it when series come with their own music (cough cough me @ project sekai). but overall it was also really funny, and had some great character moments, too.

i'll save my thoughts on strategy and where the season might be headed for my next power ranking post (whenever that is :,( ), but were some of my other thoughts/highlights.

specifically the phrase "fuck my life" and Yul saying it made me cackle. seems like Emily ISN'T Yul's manager, but she might still kinda take on that role this season? we'll see. the lack of phones is really having an effect on the plot.

okay, i guess i forgot to consider this angle when i was saying it would've made more sense for them to vote out Fiore. however, having started with 18 participants, the merge will probably happen at, what, 10 people? (modern Survivor describes the merge as "at least 11," but obviously this isn't survivor.) sure, Hunter is a bit of a challenge beast, but he can't protect all three of them every episode. if this trio is only 3/10 of the votes, you could literally split the votes on Ally and Tess in a 3-3-4 if you can get everyone else to unite against them. you know what you should be worried about? THE VILLAINS ALLIANCE HAVING 6/"10" VOTES AT THE MERGE!!! sigh. why am i relying on Jake to be smart (/j)

this was an interesting parallel. with Kristal laughing at Derek's joke, it seems like they were trying to show how she's growing closer to Derek, in a way which Trevor might fear is romantic. were there supposed to be romantic undertones to Alec being the only one to laugh at Connor's joke? and, if there were, was that just a fun nod to the aleconnor shippers, or will it actually be canon/relevant to later in the season?

they were NOT lying, Aiden's VA is a great singer! Tom's backing vocals and Ellie and Gabby's harmonies(?) were also really nice too, though. this was probably my favorite song of the episode just bc i think Cyan had the strongest singers. all of the rocking, shoulder-moving dances are also impossible not to imitate.

well, there's the thumbnail. their choice of thumbnail made me laugh bc i remember, back when i was watching s1, seeing all the thumbnails of Aiden kissing both James and Hunter and thinking that Aiden was going to be some sort of troublemaking flirty antagonistic character only to be blindsided by his actual characterization. i'm sure the s1 watching me would have only added this to her arsenal of evidence, although hilariously idk if i would have been able to tell the other character was Tom at the time. anyways, i was pretty certain from the start that this must be part of the performance. although, while i'm happy that Aiden seems to think that James will be okay with the performance, i wish we could have cut to James somehow just to confirm that that was true. i don't want the next time we see James, whether in the finale or some other time, to show that he was actually really jealous and upset at Aiden for kissing another man while in a committed relationship. also gabbielle(?) super cute in the bg :D

i also really liked this song :D i understand why they made Jake and Ally the main singers, because they best encompassed what the theme of the song was about, but i think i actually liked Ashley's vocals the best. i wish she'd gotten to sing more. also for a moment i thought Marcus had a trans flag on his hat. it's still close enough. trans Marcus canon.

this was probably my least favorite performance of the episode, although idk how much of that was just how much i hate Alec's outfit. glassesless Alec scares me so bad... no hate to the VAs, obviously, i think they have nice voices! it's actually the way that they didn't sound like they had confidence in their singing abilities that made the performance feel a little shakier to me. i do think that this song had the best lyrics in terms of encapsulating each member of their team, though. i really like how Yul and Riya are the ones to sing "i'm going to chase it" as a duo, because they're the ones chasing fame and the limelight, and then Grett sings that she can't ignore it, because eventually she's going to have to realize that her entire relationship with Yul was a result of him clout chasing. Connor only singing "live in the moment until i die" is also very fitting given his placement... in both seasons. L.

really surprised that Riya (or anyone else) didn't even mention Yul's foot injury as part of this equation. Riya just said that she didn't want to lose any more challenges, and Yul's bad foot could totally lead to a loss. maybe i'm just overestimating the extent to which that foot injury will stick around, though.

season 2 characters are REALLY suffering out here.

and those were my initial thoughts, which got way longer than i expected. thanks if you wound up reading towards all the way down here. i have no idea who the leakers are, obviously, but i really hope that they stop acting up soon so that the series can continue. i would hate to have the artists have to take a pay hit and/or stop making the series just because of some people's impatience and delusions of power, or have the honest patrons lose out on being able to watch the episodes early to protect from others' immaturity. see ya!

What’s your overall opinion of Disventure Camp All Star as for now? And what do you think of the final 3 and who do you think will win?

gonna ramble under the cut (per usual), but the tldr version is i like it for the most part, the final 3 are pretty cool, and I Do Not Know 😭

i know people cannot stand this show at this point (some for understandable reasons), but i'm honestly okay with it right now!! it's still pretty fun for the most part. (i personally just don't care at allll for the whole trevek/kristal/emily thing going on, but luckily that plot stays around for like. idk 3 minutes at most.)

and i like the final three we have, even if i do side eye the narrative choices that brought us here lol. it's about who wants it most, so i'm waiting to see who will come out on top. ally, jake, and riya were some of the lassssst people i guessed would make it this far, so it's so wild to see. i won't be able to have a full opinion until the season ends, but for now, i like em!

as for who will win... i'm not sure really. mostly because i could see any of them winning, and idk which idea i like more lmfao. i've seen people make some really good theories about certain people winning:

ally: a lot of ally's game has been spent with her stressing over what others think. even when she claims she doesn't care about that anymore, she obviously does. she's been training herself more with her stretches + she can't seem to let go of her goofy, silly gamer nature that antis of her tend to complain about. so a win for ally could include her learning to accept herself, or at least starting the journey to do that. because she as a person can win, even if people don't like her; she just has to believe in herself.

jake: similar to ally, ake's start to the game was extremely rocky due to his insecurities/jealousy issues. and even though jake has grown throughout this competition—gaining a friend in aiden, learning to trust more people, etc—he's still got some growing to do, as evident by this recent ep with the whole connor situation. a win for jake could show a win for those who still have a ways to go but are trying their best day by day.

riya: i know most people don't think she'd win because she's a villain, she's been to the finale before, etc etc. but ever since i saw a theory that this specific win could be a controversial sort of win, i've been thinking more on it. dcas has been making moves writing-wise that has less to do with "who deserves it" and more to do with "who wants it most." i've read that a riya winning plot could include her grinning at the end, finally winning this game... but then she realizes all she's lost: friends, love, etc, all just for money and fame. it'd be a tragic addition to her tragic narrative, and depending on how onc goes about this, it could be brilliant. idk i just love fake people LMFAO so this interests me too.

not to mention that throughout the entirety of this season, i have been struggling to guess what could possibly happen next. the finale is the biggest question mark for me. who will be the helpers for the finalists? what's the challenge gonna be like? these will all determine who has a better chance of winning. so. for now, my answer to who i think will win is a big ass question mark

She didn’t know what context to expect for the rats. She had been positive about the rats. There were not many things she could be absolutely certain of in this world, but she was sure of herself, and she knew it would have rats. What would bring them in the...the vision? Test? Whatever you could call it. Would they find themselves in a sewer? Already in the nest? Some mad torturer’s pit, the rats piled knee deep and rabid with hunger?

One really big rat?

She had not expected to be aboveground. She had not expected to be in a clean temple full of flowers, bright sunlight blasting down through rose window above and behind her. She had not expected the room to be so full of life that did not include rats. 

A flute was playing somewhere high up in the temple minstrel chambers, accompanied by two other wind instruments that created a sweet, airy harmony in a peaceful song. Lower down, the temple was crowded: smiling faces, some of them damp-cheeked, all of them as clean as the temple and dressed in their finest. Jewels glinted at the throats and ears of most of the women and many of the men, while silk shimmered over the whole congregation in a vibrant rainbow. Elyserin stared at them, stomach sinking. She recognized a good half of them, mostly the ones seated on the left-hand benches.

She, Phlirp, Mya, Sigrid, and Manatar all stood at the back of the temple, the other four behind her in a square pattern. Sigrid and Mya held between them a length of fine silvery cloth, so sheer it might as well have been spiderweb. They looked at each other, not sure how they came to be holding it, and their eyes followed the cloth down to where it pooled on the floor, then back up again to where it connected to Elyserin’s hair by a dozen pearl pins. Elyserin looked at them, then down at herself, stomach sinking even further. It turned out there was something she feared more than rats. Unfortunate.

Her gown was silver, and made of something slippery that moved like water every time she breathed, white gems at her wrists and studding the belt that hung loose around her hips. Her feet were bare, and she could taste the tang of metallic paint on her lips. Her earlobes felt heavy too, and in her hands she found that she was holding a single golden lily. She didn’t want to, but she could not stop herself from looking down the temple’s aisle to what lay at the other end.

She would rather it had been a really big rat.

The sunlight from the rose window sparkled on the aisle, which was tiled in a deep ocean blue and covered in an inch of water, as was traditional in a Gozreh temple. It sent the light everywhere, leaving no shadow to hide in, and no doubt as to who stood at the other side, beaming face almost giving off its own light. The same smiling, if bland, face she had only met once, whose owner had kissed her knuckles and told her he didn’t mind her odd markings that much. She had said nothing then, only stared at him as her eyes grew wider and wider until he became uncomfortable and had gone away. She had thought that was the end of it, but here, now…

“Elyserin,” said Phlirp quietly, “Are you getting married?”

“I--I--” she wanted to say no, of course not, I’m not marrying anyone let alone that twerp, but the words stuck in her throat as she caught sight of her parents at the front of the aisle. Her mother was openly weeping out of pure joy, her father’s chest high in pride. She wanted to tear the veil off her hair and stomp back to Skald, but seeing them here, like this…

They had neither been happy nor proud that she was their daughter before. She could not turn her back on seeing what it looked like.

She tore her gaze from them to the other people there, and saw that almost everyone her father traded with was here. Heirun from the Southern Hillside Trading Company. Kii from Grace Transport. Brea-Fang and her consort of the Tocktun mafia. Everyone who could financially ruin her father if they should receive an insult from him or his family, for example being asked to come all this way for a wedding only for the bride to bolt at the last moment. She felt like she was eleven years old again, being hauled home by the ear by a nanny while being scolded for embarrassing behavior.

“It’s not real,” she murmured to herself, just as the others had done. She couldn’t bring herself to believe it. There was no comforting sharp drag of her undershirt on scorpion carapace. She was alone.

“Honored ones, I present to you gentle Elyserin and noble Trevek!” This came from the other end of the aisle, a blue and white clad priestess of Gozreh. “Lovers, come together if you would be wed.”

Everyone rose to their feet and stood solemnly, all eyes on Elyserin and the young man. Trevek, that had been his name. He held a lily like hers. She hadn’t bothered to remember him, and now he was sliding forward, as barefoot as she was, entering the water of the pool with as little splash as he could manage on big feet. Elyserin wanted to stay where she was, but something was moving her feet for her, dragging her against her will to step gracefully into the pool as well.

“What are you doing?” hissed Mya. “Who is he?”

“I guess he’s my fiance. I can’t stop,” she whispered in reply. She resisted, and though her muscles shook with the effort, she took one step and another toward the nice young man who had kissed her knuckles, who would probably have her entertain visiting traders while he freshened up, who would father her children and lead her by the elbow when it was time to leave the party and talk over her and touch her while she pretended to sleep. Her whole future, laid out in a neat agenda, none of it written by her, none of it involving her, a gilded cage that came with a gag and blindfold.

She did, at this point, let out a sound that was not quite a sob. Whatever was holding her upright and forcing her steps, it wouldn’t let tears fall any more than it would let her turn around and run, to hell with her parents. She treasured her independence. She needed it like breath, craved it like a drug. And now it was slipping away, and there was absolutely nothing she could do about it.

A pair of thick arms wrapped around her from behind, and with one undignified splash she was flung over Manatar’s shoulder, ass in the air, head down his back, veil twisted into rope. The strange force that moved her feet wouldn’t let her fight any more than it had let her stop walking. She dangled there helpless as the barbarian roared out to the crowd, “You can’t have this woman! She’s already married!”

“What? Liar!” Came the outraged voice of her father. She couldn’t see him, or anyone for that matter, as her head only pointed straight down. She could move her chin a little, but only to lift her nose out of Manatar’s back and breathe in flower scent instead of human musk.

“Married? To who?” This was not a voice she recognized, but it was male and close, probably Trevek. He sounded thunderstruck. He sounded heartbroken. Oh get over yourself, she thought wretchedly.

“Me!” Manatar snarled. “By the Ones and the Other Ones, she’s mine!” Over his shoulder he whispered to her, “Say, ‘by the Ones and the Other Ones, he’s mine.’”

“By the Ones and the Other Ones, he’s mine,” she said, and was surprised that she could. 

“There. We’re married. Can’t have her.”

“You said she was already married.” Under her stomach she felt the big shoulder shrug.

“I lied. Not lying now. Can’t have her.”

“Priest! Put a stop to this nonsense!” Her father again. General scandalized murmuring in the crowd, not all of it against the events taking place. They must make quite an entertaining spectacle, she thought. I should burn a hole in the floor.

“As unorthodox as it may be, that’s a real ceremony he just said. The Ones and Other Ones are recognized deities among the mountain tribes. I’m sorry but Gozreh does not make allowance for multiple spouses,” said the priestess.

There was a general uproar, and both sides of the aisle all pressed in around the priestess and around Manatar, who swung her around and strode from the temple. Mya and Sigrid shouldered open the door, and Elyserin was carried over the threshold.

As soon as they set foot on the ground outside, she found she could move again. “Put me down you ugly brute,” she snapped at Manatar.

“That’s no way to talk to your husband,” he said, and she could hear him grinning. She wriggled but his grip was strong and he kept walking. At last she stopped struggling and let it happen, one hand propped under her chin.

“At least shift this side up a little higher,” she said. “Your armor is digging.” He shifted. It stopped digging. “Thank you. And Manatar--thank you.”

There was only the briefest pause before he said “You are welcome. You looked beautiful today.” Elyserin’s face warmed. The second she smiled, the temple and the soft sunlit lawn it stood on were gone.

Her scorpion was back inside her shirt, her feet were back on the ground, her hair tied back in a practical pair of braids instead of loose and decked with pearls. She was underground in a place she was forbidden to go, imminent danger on every side, and her fingers crackling with unsaid magic. Everything was as it ought to be.

She turned to the others still on the stair, but it was just as it had been on the other side of the threshold, a pair of statues that moved when you didn’t focus on them, silent. She reached out and touched the barrier, still as invisible as ever, smooth as glass. Phlirp and Mya watched her curiously.

“He liiiiikes you,” Phlirp cooed.

“Shut up.”

“He married you,” Mya said, mouth hanging open, still shocked from what they had all seen. “You married him.”

“Shut up. It wasn’t real. I don’t acknowledge it. It doesn’t count if it’s during a fear vision quest.”

On the other side of the barrier, unable to hear what they were saying, Manatar wondered how he was going to tell the tribe he’d married a Sylph.

That's it. Disventure Camp All Stars is doomed! There's nothing that could save this season. Connor is out, and Riya is in the finale again, the worst final 3 overall.

Trevek's kiss was the only good thing in this episode. However, I am not really Into them being together anymore because they didn't have a buildup outside of Trevor's feelings and I genuinely dislike Derek. I wish we could spend more time with them in season 1 like we did with Kristal in season 2 because I don't believe in their friendship. I wanna know how or why they decided to be the hosts and why Derek was so desperate to let Jensen do the dirty work so they could run the show. Hell, I just wanna know who they are and how they met! Speaking of Jensen where's he?! I thought he would be the final boss or something like in season one.

I am not excited for the finale and ether for season 4. I guess I might do a post where I discuss all the flaws of all stars after the finale, but honestly? I have no motivation. Because this show doesn't give me the same emotions it used to.
