"In short: Nine million Canadian women of reproductive age will have the full cost of their contraception covered as part of a major health care reform, the government says.
The reform includes the most widely used contraceptive methods, such as IUDs, contraceptive pills, hormonal implants and the day after pill.
What's next? The government must still win the approval of Canada's provinces, which administer health care."
"Canada will cover the full cost of contraception for women, the government says as it highlights the first part of a major health care reform.
The government will pay for the most widely used contraceptive methods, such as IUDs, contraceptive pills, hormonal implants or the day after pill, for the nine million Canadian women of reproductive age, Deputy Prime Minister Chrystia Freeland said on Sunday at a press conference in a pharmacy in Toronto.
"Women should be free to choose the contraceptives they need without cost getting in the way. So, we're making contraceptives free," Prime Minister Justin Trudeau said on X, formerly Twitter.
The announcement fleshes out the first part of a bill unveiled in February that, once completed, would mark the biggest expansion of Canada's publicly funded health care system in decades.
This new regime will also cover the cost of diabetes medication for some 3.7 million Canadians.
The cost of the new system and timing of the launch have not been announced...
The government must now win the approval of Canada's provinces, which actually administer health care, for this new system. Alberta and Quebec have already said they would opt out.
The pharmacare plan — as it is called locally — follows protracted negotiations between Mr Trudeau's Liberal minority government and a small leftist faction in parliament.
The New Democratic Party agreed to prop up the Liberals until the fall of 2025, on the condition that the government immediately launch the drug program."

Japan begins trial sales of prescription-free morning-after pills
Japan has begun trial sales of morning-after pills without a prescription.
Under the pilot, the pill is set to be available at 145 pharmacies. Until now these had only been available at a clinic or pharmacy with a doctor's prescription.
A public consultation by Japan's health ministry found overwhelming support to make it available over the counter.
Rights groups have criticised the scheme, saying it is too small, and called for restrictions to be lifted.
Under existing rules, women, including victims of sexual assault, have to go to a clinic or hospital for a prescription to obtain emergency contraception

Guess what I found out today!
Anyone who is capable of getting pregnant (and let’s be real, anyone who can get someone pregnant) should know this:
The morning after pill does not stop a pregnancy that has already started. In fact, it is entirely ineffective if your body has released an egg.
I did not know this before today, and I’m assuming a lot of people here also didn’t know this, so I’m telling all of you right know so we know.

Ladrien June 2023: Day 21 — Morning (After)
my excuse for this @ladrienjune entry would be that it was 3 am, but, actually, I'm not going to apologise
"This is— This is going to work, right?" Chewing on her bottom lip, Ladybug peers up at Adrien from the small pill on her palm. "Your friend said it should." "She also said you'll be, like, not well." "I'm pretty sure a heavy period is preferred to dropping by before every Akuma attack for you to babysit." He ducks his head. "I know. I'm sorry. About all of this."  "It isn't your fault." "Well, a bit—" "Not even a little bit." She swallows the pill and leans against his side. "Just— Can you hold me?"  Kissing her forehead, Adrien does.

In my abortion-is-healthcare files: the morning after pill has a weight limit. If you are over 155 pounds (70 kg in metric, or what most of the world uses, but I won't go into the metric rant right now) you will need two pills.
Now you know a thing, and any day you learned something new is not a day wasted.

Feels like a good time to share this- using combined pills as emergency contraception. It’s not as effective, and it’s likely to make you feel rough, but it is safe, and it’s a lot better than nothing if you have no other option.
Ideally it should be started within 72 hours of contraceptive sex.
Don’t use this to replace getting emergency contraception if you can access it, but if you can’t, but can access the combined pill (e.g. if a friend has a supply etc) then it’s worth knowing.

"Women's rights activists in Honduras are celebrating a major victory, after President Xiomara Castro announced that her government will lift its near-total ban on the emergency contraception pill.
"Having access to PAE is life-changing for the women in Honduras, especially considering the alarming rates of violence," Jinna Rosales of the advocacy group Strategy Group for PAE — the medicine is known as PAE, for Píldora Anticonceptiva de Emergencia — told NPR.
"With a total abortion ban, PAE is often our only option here – it being accessible to all will save lives," the group said via email.
Castro announced the reversal Wednesday night, [March 8th,] in the final hours of International Women's Day. As she undid the policy, Castro noted that the World Health Organization says the pill is not "abortive."
The WHO's policy recommendation states, "All women and girls at risk of an unintended pregnancy have a right to access emergency contraception and these methods should be routinely included within all national family planning programs."
Legalization will undo a 2009 ban
For years, Honduras was the only nation in the Americas to have an absolute ban on the sale or use of emergency contraception, also known as morning-after or "Plan B" pills. It also prohibits abortion in all cases.
Honduras moved to ban emergency contraception in 2009, as the country went through political and social upheaval. Its supreme court affirmed the ban in 2012.
After Castro became the country's first female president, Honduras slightly eased its stance on the medicine. But when Minister of Health José Manuel Matheu announced that policy shift last fall, critics said i didn't go far enough, as the medicine would only be made legal in cases of rape.
At the time, Matheu said the pill didn't qualify as a method of contraception. But on Wednesday night, he joined Castro at her desk to sign a new executive agreement with her, opening the path to emergency contraception."

Oklahoma GOP Advances Bills That Would Ban Emergency Contraception | Truthout
These bills are part of a concerted effort by right-wing groups like the ADF to erode abortion and contraception access in the wake of the U.S. Supreme Court’s reversal of Roe v. Wade. In November 2022, the ADF brought a legal challenge to the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) approval of the abortion pill mifepristone. The lawsuit, argued by the ADF, claimed that the presumed dead Comstock Act of 1873, which prohibited the dissemination of birth control through the mail “to prevent the mails from being used to corrupt the public morals,” prohibited access to and mailing of the abortion pill.
