The Moroccan Culture , Customs and Traditions

Morocco is a land with an expansive history of customs and traditions. The country is worldly renowned for its incredible hospitality and its impressive blend of cultures and religions. It is also a land of extraordinary contrasts and remarkable diversity. What could be more emblematic of Moroccan customs and cultural heritage than a traditional Moroccan wedding? Moroccan weddings are an elaborate affair that celebrates unity, love, happiness, and prosperity. It is a vibrant commemoration of sanctity and virtue that engages all five senses, through the colors, the music, the clothing, and the food.

Moroccan cuisine is worldly renowned for its intense and diverse flavors, colorful blends and artistic presentation, so naturally when it comes to weddings, the food is just that much more scrumptious and exceptional. Hosting an unforgettable feast entails opulent displays of splendor and sophisticated taste, and this translates to the clothing. People wear their most luxurious and extravagant frocks, with exquisite beaded caftans and fascinating sequined takshitas in vibrant colors.

Weddings aside, the variety in traditional Moroccan clothing is specific to each occasion, based on how casual or formal it is. Djellabas are the most relaxed form of traditional clothing, you can find people sporting while running for errands or while visiting family and friends. Whereas caftans and jabadors can be worn for religious holidays or engagement parties and takshitas are reserved for more formal settings.

Moroccan Cuisine

With centuries of trade, conquest and immigration, Moroccan food preparation and consumption habits have been frequently shaped and reshaped. The region takes pride in its culinary scene with its exquisite flavors and tantalizing aromas. Geographic diversity and climate greatly allow for the cultivation of an impressive range of foods and ingredients.

Because of its strategic location, Morocco has been part of the spice trade route in the past. This marked a truly defining period in the history of North Africa and Morocco in particular. It also helped broaden the country’s culinary scope to incorporate new ingredients, herbs and spices that have now become a staple in Moroccan cuisine.The rich history of Morocco, from the indigenous Berbers to the nomadic Arabs, the Phoenicians, and the Romans, is emulated in the gastronomy. Moroccan people may differ in terms of their ethnicity, religious beliefs, or political affiliation, but they do share an avid appreciation for food and cooking.

Understanding the food culture is a great way to see how people of different regions come together, share ideas and contribute to the creation of new dishes, meals, and cooking traditions. Tajine, Couscous, Pastilla, and Harira are testimony of regional influences combined with ancient cooking traditions.

A lot of Morocco’s staple dishes, lamb tajine with dried apricots or couscous with caramelized onions and raisins, for example, consist of blending sweet and savory flavors together, a tradition that goes back to Ancient Roman cuisine. When you try to dissect the history of any traditional Moroccan dish, you will find hints of Sicilian, Maltese, Greek, and Arab influences.

This makes it a bit challenging to pinpoint what belongs to whom. Nonetheless, whether it’s street food, a lavish restaurant or a homemade meal, you can expect unctuous dishes full of flavor and panache that will inevitably make you fall in love with the region and its cuisine.

The Moroccan music.

The multi-ethnic background of Moroccan culture cannot be more evident than in the country’s musical landscape and dance forms. Despite the Western music scene’s heavy impact on contemporary Moroccan artists, there has been a recent yearning for more traditional and authentic Moroccan music.

This longing to revisit one’s history is encapsulated in the revival of Gnaoua, Berber, Rai, and Andalusian music through annual concerts and festivals dedicated to these ethnic genres. A lot of young musicians and artists have also contributed to this revival by performing covers of traditional songs using more modern-fitting rhythms and instruments to appeal to the youth.

Ο Πολιτισμός, τα έθιμα και οι παραδόσεις του Μαρόκου

Το Μαρόκο είναι μια χώρα με μεγάλη ιστορία εθίμων και παραδόσεων. Η  χώρα είναι παγκοσμίως γνωστή για την απίστευτη φιλοξενία και τον  εντυπωσιακό συνδυασμό πολιτισμών και θρησκειών. Είναι επίσης μια χώρα με  έντονες αντιθέσεις και μια εντυπωσιακή ποικιλομορφία. Τι θα μπορούσε  λοιπόν να είναι πιο εμβληματικό από έναν παραδοσιακό μαροκινό γάμο?? Εδώ  που τα μαροκινά ήθη και έθιμα της πολιτιστικής κληρονομιάς των  μαροκινών εκτυλίσσονται σε όλο τους το μεγαλείο. Οι μαροκινοί γάμοι  είναι μια υπόθεση σύνθετη που γιορτάζει την ενότητα, την αγάπη, την  ευτυχία και την ευημερία. Είναι μια ζωντανή γιορτή ιερότητας και αρετής  που εμπλέκει και τις πέντε αισθήσεις, μέσα από τα χρώματα, τη μουσική,  τις ενδυμασίες και το φαγητό. Η μαροκινή κουζίνα πάλι είναι  παγκοσμίως γνωστή για τις έντονες και ποικίλες γεύσεις της, τους  πολύχρωμους συνδυασμούς και την καλλιτεχνική παρουσίαση, οπότε είναι  φυσικό όταν πρόκειται για γάμους, το φαγητό να είναι ακριβώς το πιο  νόστιμο και εξαιρετικό. Η διοργάνωση μιας τέτοιας αξέχαστης γιορτής  προϋποθέτει ένα μεγαλείο πολυτέλειας, λαμπρότητας και εκλεπτυσμένου  γούστου, και αυτό εκφράζεται στις φορεσιές. Οι καλεσμένοι βάζουν τα πιο  πολυτελή και εντυπωσιακά ρούχα τους, υπέροχα καφτάνια δουλεμένα με  χάντρες και συναρπαστικά takshitas σε έντονα χρώματα στολισμένα με  πούλιες. Πέρα όμως από τους γάμους, η ποικιλία των παραδοσιακών  μαροκινών ενδυμασιών ανάλογα με το πόσο άπλες ή επίσημες είναι ,είναι  συγκεκριμένες για κάθε η περίσταση .Το Djellabas είναι η πιο απλή μορφή  παραδοσιακής ενδυμασίας, θα δείτε να την φορούν οι άνθρωποι στην  καθημερινότητα τους πηγαίνοντας για ψώνια η όταν επισκέπτονται συγγενείς  και φίλους. Ενώ τα καφτάνια και τα τζαμπαντόρ φοριούνται στις  θρησκευτικές γιορτές ή στα πάρτι αρραβώνων ενώ τα takshitas επιλέγονται  για τις πιο επίσημες εκδηλώσεις .

Η μαροκινή κουζίνα:Μέσα στους αιώνες με το εμπόριο, τις κατακτήσεις και τη μετανάστευση,  οι μαροκινές συνήθειες παρασκευής και κατανάλωσης τροφίμων έχουν συχνά  διαμορφωθεί και αναδιαμορφωθεί. Το Μαρόκο μπορεί να υπερηφανεύεται για  το γαστρονομικό του γούστο με τις εξαιρετικές γεύσεις και τα δελεαστικά  αρώματά του. Η γεωγραφική ποικιλομορφία και το κλίμα της χώρας  επιτρέπουν σε μεγάλο βαθμό την καλλιέργεια μιας εντυπωσιακής γκάμας  τροφίμων και συστατικών.

Λόγω της στρατηγικής του θέσης, το  Μαρόκο υπήρξε τόπος εμπορίου μπαχαρικών στο παρελθόν. Αυτό σηματοδότησε  μια πραγματικά καθοριστική περίοδο στην ιστορία της Βόρειας Αφρικής και  ειδικότερα του Μαρόκου. Βοήθησε επίσης να διευρυνθεί το γαστρονομικό  πεδίο της χώρας για να ενσωματώσει νέα συστατικά, βότανα και μπαχαρικά  που έχουν πλέον γίνει βασικά στη μαροκινή κουζίνα. Η πλούσια ιστορία  του Μαρόκου, από τους αυτόχθονες Βέρβερους έως τους νομαδικούς Άραβες,  Φοίνικες και τους Ρωμαίους, επηρέασε την μαροκινή γαστρονομία. Οι  άνθρωποι του Μαρόκου μπορεί να διαφέρουν ως προς την εθνικότητα, τις  θρησκευτικές πεποιθήσεις ή την πολιτική τους σχέση, αλλά εκτιμούν  ιδιαίτερα το φαγητό και το μαγείρεμα. Αυτή την γαστρονομική  κουλτούρα την αντιλαμβάνεται κάποιος όταν δεί  να συναντώνται άτομα από  διαφορετικές περιοχές, και να μοιράζονται ιδέες και να συμβάλλουν στη  δημιουργία νέων πιάτων, γευμάτων και παραδόσεων μαγειρικής. Τατζίν,  Κουσκούς, Παστίγια και Χαρίρα είναι κάποια από τα πιάτα που μαρτυρούν  τις περιφερειακές επιρροές σε συνδυασμό με τις αρχαίες παραδόσεις  μαγειρικής. Πολλά βασικά πιάτα του Μαρόκου,οπως το τατζίν αρνιού  με αποξηραμένα βερίκοκα ή το κουσκούς με καραμελωμένα κρεμμύδια και  σταφίδες, για παράδειγμα, η ανάμειξη δηλαδή γλυκών και αλμυρών γεύσεων,  είναι μια παράδοση που παραπέμπει στην αρχαία ρωμαϊκή κουζίνα. Αν  προσπαθήσετε  να ανιχνεύσετε την ιστορία οποιουδήποτε παραδοσιακού  μαροκινού πιάτου, θα βρείτε στοιχεία από τη Σικελία, τη Μάλτα, αλλά και  Ελληνικές και Αραβικές επιρροές. Όλο αυτό κάνει λίγο δύσκολο να  εντοπίσετε τι ανήκει σε ποιον. Παρ ‘όλα αυτά, είτε πρόκειται για φαγητό  του δρόμου η ένα γεύμα σε πλούσιο εστιατόριο ή σ’ένα σπίτι μιας  μαροκινής οικογένειας , μπορείτε να ανακαλύψετε υπέροχα πιάτα γεμάτα  γεύση φτιαγμένα με μεράκι που θα σας κάνουν χωρίς άλλο να ερωτευτείτε  τον τόπο και την κουζίνα του!!!

Η Μαροκινή μουσική:Το πολυεθνικό υπόβαθρο του μαροκινού πολιτισμού δεν μπορεί παρα να έχει  επηρεάσει και το μουσικό τοπίο της χώρας και τις μορφές χορού. Παρά τη  μεγάλη επίδραση της δυτικής μουσικής σκηνής στους σύγχρονους μαροκινούς  καλλιτέχνες, υπήρξε προσφάτως μια έντονη επιθυμία επιστροφής στην  παραδοσιακή και αυθεντική μαροκινή μουσική.

Αυτή η λαχτάρα  του  επαναπροσδιορισμού της μαροκινής μουσικής κουλτούρας είναι εμφανής στην  αναβίωση της μουσικής των Gnaoua, των Βερβερων , των Rai και της  μουσικής της Ανδαλουσίας μέσα από πολύ γνωστά ετήσια φεστιβάλ και  συναυλίες αφιερωμένες σε αυτά τα εθνικά είδη μουσικής . Πολλοί νέοι  μουσικοί και καλλιτέχνες έχουν επίσης συνεισφέρει σε αυτήν την αναβίωση  της παραδοσιακής μουσικής κάνοντας δίσκους χρησιμοποιώντας πιο  μοντέρνους ρυθμούς και όργανα για να προσελκύσουν τη νεολαία. Όπως  πολλά έθιμα και παραδόσεις, η μαροκινή μουσική ποικίλλει επίσης ανάλογα  με τη γεωγραφική θέση κάθε περιοχής. Η Ανδαλουσιανή μουσική, ένα μείγμα  ισπανικών και αραβικών επιρροών, χρονολογείται από τον 9ο αιώνα.  Θεωρείται κλασική μουσική του Μαρόκου και γενικά παίζεται σε ειδικές  περιστάσεις και εθνικές γιορτές όπως το Eid. Η μουσική του Chaabi  είναι το αντίστοιχο της δικής μας ποπ, είναι πολύ ζωντανή  και συνήθως  παίζεται σε γάμους, βαπτίσεις και πάρτι για να παροτρύνει τους  καλεσμένους να χορέψουν και να διασκεδάσουν. Η μουσική των Βέρβερων  είναι εξαιρετικά τελετουργική, απαιτεί τη δική της τελετή με περίπλοκες  χορογραφίες που αποπνέουν μια απόκοσμη, σχεδόν υπερφυσική ατμόσφαιρα.
