TF2 2023 Summer Update Day One Thoughts

14 new maps is actually really nice to see, and Versus Saxton Hale finally becoming an official gamemode is kinda huge, but the maps are broken as of right now, they crash servers upon loading (Valve forgot to ship the model for Hale apparently). It makes me hopeful that Valve will accept other community-made VScript gamemodes going forward. I have encountered some issues on the other maps, like RED being able to walk into BLU’s first spawn on Cashworks, but I expect fixes will come shortly. The maps I have been able to play are very nice and play pretty well, but the Casual servers seem to be under a lot of stress right now as wait times are very long and I’ve seen some servers crash regardless of map.

The cosmetics are nice, it’s good to see more general-use cosmetics instead of festive eyesores. The taunts are nice too, I love that Heavy finally got a class-specific vehicle taunt. I’ve not yet seen any of the unusual effects or war paints, but I don’t really care about that stuff anyhow.

The total lack of Community-Made Fixes is really, really disappointing. They gave us a new tab on the workshop and everything and not a single fix was selected. Hoping we’ll see Valve make use of the tab they added in smaller patches and other holiday updates. The Valve-made fixes we got are nice though, as MvM is playable again.

I do also like that Steel and Mossrock got some improvements and fixes, like the long-standing issue of Pyros being able to spread flames through the door to point A.

All-in-all the update is pretty good, and if we can get more updates of this size, maybe more frequently, then I think TF2 is gonna be in an alright spot.

On a hopeful side note, I think VAC has actually received an update as well. When trying to play the update, I was sometimes booted from servers for my “system blocking VAC”. I’m not sure what VAC was detecting, as the only change made to my system was TF2 updating, but the issue eventually stopped and I can only guess it was something on Valve’s end.

I heard these things are common on Jungle Inferno maps, though I would not know which ones they are. They're certainly on Mossrock and on Enclosure though!
