Mother’s Day. For some this is a day filled with loss and pain. For those who’ve never lost a mom or a child, your day will be very different. We see your joy and are happy for you. Yet, that doesn’t make today easy. For years, I dreaded Mother’s Day. Struggling with my own empty arms while the world celebrated their children was awful. The first Mother’s Day after we lost our baby I left a Church service shortly after I arrived. A friend who understands called and her words helped “Just because your child is in heaven doesn’t make you any less a mom.” Later, my own mom just held my hand and I visited my grandma for a hug. I was grateful, so grateful, to have my mom and Grandma on Mother’s Day. This weekend my Grandma is in heaven but I am blessed my own mom is here. I spent Friday and Saturday with her and every moment I realized how blessed I am to have her. We laughed when I asked if she wanted to do something today and she unapologetically declined us all opting for a day of rest. I was acutely aware of her presence this year and this Mother’s Day felt blessed for what I had as opposed to what I didn’t. A few of my childhood friends are without their mothers this year for the first time. Today, is going to be awful. The feeds of social media a constant reminder of your loss. I also have some people in my life who never had a loving mother. One friend confided her mother told her she regretted having her and treated her as such her entire life. For her, Mother’s Day is a cruel moment that reminds her of a world she has never understood. One where Mothers actually love their children. To all those struggling with this day for all your different reasons of loss. This mama’s heart is wrapping her arms around you.
