Doctor Who S1E2 The End of The World - Rambles and Thoughts
WESTMINSTER BRIDGE CONTINUES TO BE A BANGER
I like the doctors funny brown ball he needs to put into the console unit for some fucking unexplained reason???
Tumblr media
I wish I was born in the time period where words like apple got used in the names for our years…. what a wonderful world that would be…
"Platform one forbids the use of weapons, teleportation and religion"
The national trust canonically just, keeping the entire earth around is really funny.
Whatever, go my blue lemmings.
Tumblr media
The doctor giggling at rose looking at the aliens is so funny that fuckers so pleased with himself
Tumblr media
TAINTED LOVE TIME
Rose_Realising_What_Shes_Done.png
Tumblr media
THE EVIL METAL BUGS FUCKING TOOK RAFFALO
ALL MY BLUE DA BE DA PEOPLE FUCKING DIE IN THIS EPISODE
This is the episode that fucking permanently implanted the term "Jiggery Pokery" into my vocabulary, and EVERYBODY I say it around always questions what the fuck it means, bro, context clues, I think its pretty self explanatory honestly, its jiggery pokery
The way Jackie hangs up after Rose says "Top of the world" the face she pulls is just like "this bitch fuckin hungover again I stg"
Tumblr media
I like how the funny blue host man just mashes EVERY button on his keypads to try and get the sun filter up again, like brother, your just making that shit worse, get real
FIRST BAD WOLF MENTION BY THE MOXX OF BALHOON
Jabe saying "prostitute" in this show fully marketed as family friendly is really funny some fucking 8 year old probably asked their parents what it meant, that can't have been a good night for them.
Actually on that note it's interesting just how much of the edginess from the wilderness years actually carried over to the 2005 show
Jabe you can't just bring up the doctors trauma like that wtf man
I love the way these fucking spiders scamper about
Jabe just fucking showed off her liana to the doctor bro this tree DOWN BAD
Brittany Spears Time
Why did Cassandra try to blame the face of boe of all people? mans literally just a head, however she is also just skin, maybe shes just jealous his brain is actually in his head.
I want one of those little scampering metal spiders as a pet.
Poor Moxx of Balhoon bro just got called pixie like a slur.
Annnnnnnd now the first death in nuwho that davros uses as a statement on how the doctor makes people dangerous to not just others but themselves
fuuuuuuuuuck man Moxx of Balhoon melted
yESSS MAKE THIS DUMB BITCH FACE EXPLODE
Tumblr media
Again the with how visceral cassandras face explosion is it does still feel like something from the wilderness years
I wish I was old enough to have been a fan of classic who and have watched this episode as it aired that final reveal of the doctor being the last time lord must have hit like a ton of bricks to any fan of the original series

DW REWATCH
S1E2 THE END OF THE WORLD
Tumblr media
The Doctor takes Rose on her first voyage through time, to the year five billion. The sun is about to expand and swallow the earth. Amongst the alien races gathering to watch, a murderer is at work. Who is controlling the mysterious and deadly spiders?
WHAT was he doing in this scene.
Tumblr media
You think you're so impressive. ---I am so impressive baby’s first flirt….
2. You lot, you spend all your time thinking about dying, like you're going to get killed by eggs or beef or global warming or asteroids. But you never take time to imagine the impossible, that maybe you survive. i adore this line. Iirc i read somewhere that this episode was made when a lot of negative climate focussed media was coming out and rtd wanted to assure young viewers that there was always hope? Not sure where i saw it but it’s stuck with me
3. Is that why we're here? I mean, is that what you do? Jump in at the last minute and save the Earth?-- rose we are literally here so i can trauma dump. Haven’t you heard of healthy coping mechanisms??
4. He's blue RTD my beloved. What an incredibly realistic, human observation—i feel like companions simply do not do this anymore. And they should!
5. Love the bark makeup. It’s so pretty!
6. The air from my lungs….this episode is so good damn it
7. Moxx of Balhoon better known as the CEO of sex. I give you the gift of bodily salivas lucky Rose
8. CASSANDRAAAAA
9. Rose being overwhelmed and running out. I can’t get over the amount of care and detail RTD put into writing her. She really is his baby. Can’t wait to see how he brings her back now (because he will. He will.)
10. Jabe’s device is unable to identify a timelord, probably because the rest of the universe thinks them dead? Although her reaction is very different from that of the Nestene Consciousness (who is implied to have lost quite a bit in the Time War), whereas Jabe doesn’t seem to have any personal connection. I wonder what the other outsider perceptions of the War were!
11. Ahhh Rose being kind to the plumber. I love my girl. LMAO at her realising she just hitched a ride with a complete stranger w/o thinking about it. The metal spiders are very Minority Report.
12. Your machine gets inside my head. It gets inside and it changes my mind, and you didn't even ask? the WRITING. Just chef’s kiss. Even in this sort of power dynamic, you never ever feel like Rose doesn’t have agency. She’s so smart and capable and fierce. i love her.
13. Gotta love how fast they switch from arguing to flirting. Jiggery-pokery <3
14. I might be late home. and then she comes back a YEAR later JESUS
15. Bad Wolf mention!
16. Hahahah i can’t watch the Jabe scene without thinking of plant sex now, courtesy of Katie
17. I was born on that planet, and so was my mum, and so was my dad. I love how much Rose loves her dad. Like if you’ve never even known a parent, you probably wouldn’t bring them up in a context like this, but the addition implies that Rose thinks of her dad quite a bit, and this is a nice little subtle setup to my favourite episode of the season, Father’s Day
18. The sun filter scene! It’s unexpectedly tense. I remember being really worried the first time I saw it
19. This whole event was sponsored by the Face of Boe. He invited us. Jack set them up….god that’s so sweet. The fact that he knows that they’re properly together in Pete’s World at this point <3333333 he is Literally Us. Putting his blorbos in Situations.
20. What are you going to do, moisturise me?
21. At least it'll be quick. Just like my fifth husband. HUHHH?? LMAO
22. I love the turning fan trope, every time it’s in any movie ever, it’s got me on the edge of my seat
23. Everything has its time, and everything dies. OOF. Appreciate Rose still wanting Cassandra to be saved! Something something parallel with how she changed the Doctor so much that he’s willing to give Cassandra a peaceful death in New Earth <3 the power of love, folks.
24. The Earth death scene is beautiful. I remember feeling so sad that everyone just missed it! And the Doctor finally realising that maybe this wasn’t a great first trip for his young companion xD
25. I'm left travelling on my own 'cos there's no one else.---There's me. What a beautiful moment of intimacy. And such great acting! The Doctor is finally beginning to let her in, and Rose has attached to this stranger so quickly, despite how prickly and condescending he can be. Soulmates <3
Loveee this ending. 10/10 again!

S2E10 - Love & Monsters
Tumblr media
★★★☆☆
Hoo boy. If this Shrek looking hunk of an alien doesn’t give you nightmare fuel for days after, I don’t know quite know what else will.
It’s come to my attention that the concept of this alien was from a kid’s imagination, when they submitted this idea for a Blue Peter competition. So, this episode gets 3 stars purely for the commitment from the BBC prop department to bringing that kid’s drawing to life as the very puke green, greasy, lumpy Abzorbaloff. I even love the name unironically as well!
Aside from that, for an episode that barely featured the Doctor, I actually enjoyed it so much more than I remembered. It’s very clearly a mirror back on the real life Doctor Who fandom - a group of diverse people (worldwide), sitting around (virtually), discussing all things the Doctor (making gifs), sharing experiences (writing fanfic) and actually making real friendships outside of Doctor Who. It was kind of sweet. And oh so nerdy.
(I am not even going to bother with the dirty joke about Elton’s sex life with his paving slab girlfriend...)
In the meantime, the above image is forever immortalised as the picture for my sister in my phone contacts (she’s put me down as the Moxx of Balhoon, so the love is equally shared). Godspeed, Blue Peter kid. Your fever dream of an imagination has literally been burned into my mind.
QUOTE:  “You’re not from Raxacoricofallapatorius are you?” “No! I’m not the swine! I spit on them. I was born on the twin planet.” “Really? What’s the twin planet of Raxacoricofallapatorius?” “Clom.”

'...Jimmy Vee (played various aliens, including the Moxx of Balhoon, the Graske and Bannakaffalatta, 2005-2014)
My favourite experience on Doctor Who was playing Bannakaffalatta, who got to have an affair with Kylie Minogue on board the Titanic! It was a pleasure to be that character as Russell T Davies actually wrote the part for me to play. Out of all the characters I’ve played in the show, that would have to be the best one.
Ruth Madeley (plays Shirley Anne Bingham in the 60th anniversary specials, 2023)
I always loved David Tennant and Catherine Tate’s dynamic. They are so incredible together and they always bring so much to every scene – humour, emotion, excitement. When I found out I was joining them for the 60th anniversary, it was a dream come true. I feel so lucky.
Tom Kingsley (director of one of the 60th anniversary specials, 2023)
In each episode the Doctor has to solve a problem with nothing more than their wits and a screwdriver. I love how the show itself has the same resourcefulness, with only a modest BBC budget. Some of the most joyful inventiveness is in Blink, in which the Weeping Angels first appear. You never see them moving and the Doctor barely features, but Steven Moffat spins an exhilaratingly confusing and desperately bleak story. It’s a kind of magic to create something so rich from just a handful of ingredients … although it helps that one of those ingredients is Carey Mulligan!'

Annotations of each line.
Image 1:
1. "Tainted Love and chips,"
In "The End of the World," Lady Cassandra plays “Tainted Love” by Soft Cell during a party held to observe Earth’s destruction. After the emotionally intense experience, the Ninth Doctor takes Rose back to modern-day London for chips (fries), grounding her in normality after such a spectacle.
2. "Sunshine on her lips,"
This likely refers to Rose Tyler and the warmth, vitality, and youthful brightness she brings into the Ninth Doctor’s life, especially after the emotional weight of the Time War.
3. "Red wine and Women Wept,"
At Cassandra's party in "The End of the World," red wine and luxury are on display. “Women Wept” could refer to a dramatic moment of mourning or loss, perhaps metaphorically tied to Earth’s destruction or Rose's emotional response to it.
4. "Pass the port Harriet,"
A nod to Harriet Jones, introduced in "Aliens of London" and later Prime Minister. “Pass the port” adds a tongue-in-cheek tone, possibly referencing the political traditions and formality she grows into.
5. "Amazing ears, lopsided grin,"
A direct tribute to the Ninth Doctor’s iconic appearance—his large ears and mischievous, sometimes shy smile.
6. "Always feeling the Earth’s spin,"
In "Rose," the Doctor takes Rose’s hand and tells her to “feel the turn of the Earth,” demonstrating his profound awareness of time and space, and how he perceives the universe differently than humans.
7. "Vinegar and bananas,"
Vinegar is deadly to Raxacoricofallapatorians (the Slitheen’s species), as seen in "World War Three" where it is used to defeat them.
Bananas are referenced in "The Doctor Dances," where the Doctor swaps Captain Jack's sonic blaster with a banana and explains that he encouraged the replacement of Villengard’s weapon factories with banana groves. “Bananas are good,” he insists.
8. "Captain Jack’s Pyjamas,"
A cheeky nod to Captain Jack Harkness, introduced in "The Empty Child." While we don’t literally see his pajamas, the line reflects his flirtatious charm and frequent wardrobe changes.
9. "England in the Blitz,"
In "The Empty Child" and "The Doctor Dances," the Ninth Doctor and his companions land in London during the Blitz. The historical setting is key to the chilling mystery surrounding the gas mask plague.
10. "High tea at the Ritz,"
The Ritz is a famous chain of luxury hotels, particularly known for its high tea service. While the Ninth Doctor doesn’t visit The Ritz on-screen, this line evokes the elegance and whimsical escapism of time travel, possibly suggesting the kind of destination he might casually drop in on.
11. "Kronkburger and Pajatas,"
In "The Long Game," the Doctor, Rose, and Adam visit Satellite 5 where fast foods like kronkburgers and pajatas are available. This comedic detail highlights the continuity of junk food even in the far future.
12. "Genghis Khan and Blue Peter."
In "Rose," the Doctor jokes that even Genghis Khan couldn't get through the TARDIS doors, emphasizing its indestructibility.
Blue Peter makes a cameo in "Aliens of London," where a presenter demonstrates a UFO cake. Additionally, the Ninth Doctor (Christopher Eccleston) appeared on Blue Peter in 2005, defeating a Dalek-shaped compost bin with a Blue Peter badge.
13. "One brave weather balloon,"
In "World War Three," the Doctor mocks U.N.I.T. by saying, “That lot would've gathered for a weather balloon,” criticizing their tendency to overreact to minor phenomena. It’s a jab at bureaucracy and plays into his more maverick, irreverent nature.
14. "Poor old Moxx of Balhoon."
The Moxx of Balhoon appears in "The End of the World." He is a guest at the Earth destruction event and is killed when Cassandra's sabotage causes a shield failure, exposing the station to deadly solar radiation. His death adds a grim tone to the Doctor’s warnings.
15. "Lynda with a Y"
Lynda Moss, affectionately remembered as “Lynda with a Y,” is introduced in "Bad Wolf" and plays a heroic role in "The Parting of the Ways." She helps the Doctor battle the Daleks on Satellite 5 and is tragically killed, earning a special place in his memory.
16. "Jackie Tyler’s shepherd’s pie."
In "World War Three," after the events settle down, Jackie Tyler offers to cook shepherd’s pie for the Doctor. It’s a symbolic olive branch as she begins warming to him, and represents the merging of Rose’s old life with her new one aboard the TARDIS.
17. "Even Auton Plastic"
In "Rose," the Doctor battles the Nestene Consciousness, which animates Auton plastic mannequins. It’s a modern reinterpretation of a classic Doctor Who villain and the first threat Rose faces alongside the Doctor.
18. "These things are fantastic."
“Fantastic!” is the Ninth Doctor’s signature catchphrase. He uses it throughout his run, often at moments of awe, excitement, or even despair—capturing the full emotional spectrum of his complex character.
Image 2:
1. "Coleslaw and pickled onions,"
In "The Parting of the Ways," Rose, Jackie, and Mickey are at a café that now serves coleslaw in plastic cups—Jackie notes it tastes “a bit clinical.” In "World War Three," pickled onions (along with other pickled goods) are used by Jackie and Mickey to destroy a Slitheen, thanks to their vinegar content, which is deadly to the creatures.
2. "Zombies in Cardiff dungeons."
References "The Unquiet Dead," where reanimated corpses possessed by the Gelth haunt a Cardiff funeral parlor in 1869. Rose and the Doctor team up with Charles Dickens to investigate and stop them.
3. "Cassandra, Metaltron,"
Cassandra is Lady Cassandra O’Brien.Δ17, a stretched skin being obsessed with beauty and profit in "The End of the World."
Metaltron is the codename for the lone Dalek encountered in "Dalek." Its survival devastates the Doctor, who believed he ended the Time War by destroying all Daleks, including himself.
4. "Dickens left the gas on."
A playful nod to "The Unquiet Dead," where Charles Dickens helps the Doctor fight off the gaseous Gelth. The line humorously implies he’s responsible for a “gas leak.”
5. "Bad Wolf or Dalek Scheme"
The Ninth Doctor wonders throughout the season about the meaning of “Bad Wolf.” In "Bad Wolf" and "The Parting of the Ways," it’s revealed to be Rose’s future self leaving a message through time. The Game Station, under the name “Bad Wolf Corporation,” is also being used by the Daleks to execute their plan.
6. "Are you my Repeated Meme?"
Blends two references:
“Are you my mummy?” is the iconic line from "The Empty Child" and "The Doctor Dances," spoken by a child infected by nanogenes.
The Adherents of the Repeated Meme are robotic scapegoats controlled by Cassandra in "The End of the World."
7. "The Mighty Jagrafess,"
Refers to the villain from "The Long Game." The Jagrafess is a heat-sensitive creature placed on the ceiling of Satellite 5 to manipulate humanity’s news and growth.
8. "Adam’s weird new face,"
In "The Long Game," temporary companion Adam Mitchell installs a port in his forehead to download future knowledge. The Doctor expels him for abusing time travel.
9. "The Emperor Dalek’s fleet"
From "The Parting of the Ways," the Doctor discovers that the Emperor of the Daleks survived the Time War and rebuilt a vast Dalek fleet using human genetic material.
10. "And my two left feet."
While the Doctor never claims to have “two left feet,” "The Doctor Dances" features him reluctantly opening up emotionally and literally dancing with Rose. This line reflects his emotional awkwardness and slow healing from war trauma.
11. "Bad Wolf and Clive’s Shed"
Combines:
The "Bad Wolf" message, scattered across time and episodes.
Clive, the conspiracy theorist from "Rose," whose shed is full of research on the Doctor. He recognizes the danger and mystery surrounding the Doctor before dying in an Auton attack.
12. "Those walking undead."
Another nod to the reanimated corpses in "The Unquiet Dead," made even more chilling by the setting in Victorian Cardiff and Dickens’ involvement.
13. "Perfect Brides and Nestines"
“Perfect Bride” could reference Jackie Tyler, seen attending a wedding in "Father’s Day," where she gets to show off and confront her husband Pete.
Nestines refers to the Nestene Consciousness, the living plastic entity controlling the Autons in "Rose."
14. "Over-active nanogenes."
From "The Empty Child" two-parter. The Chula nanogenes misinterpret injuries and mistakenly create zombie-like gas mask creatures. Eventually, they are reprogrammed to heal instead of harm.
15. "Slitheen romancing"
In "Boom Town," Blon Fel-Fotch Passameer-Day Slitheen (posing as Margaret Blaine) flirts with and manipulates the Doctor during dinner, hoping to appeal to his compassion to escape justice. The "romance" is strategic, but serves as a rare moment of emotional complexity for a villain.
16. "Have we done dancing?"
A callback to "The Doctor Dances," where the Ninth Doctor finally lets himself enjoy a moment of joy. The Doctor triumphantly announces, “Everybody lives!”—a rare moment of victory and celebration.
17. "The fear of the loner"
Represents the Ninth Doctor’s survivor’s guilt after the Time War. His loneliness is a key theme of his era, slowly healed through his bond with Rose.
18. "Never going to Barcelona."
In "The Parting of the Ways," the Doctor plans to take Rose to the planet Barcelona (where dogs have no noses), but regenerates before they can go—symbolizing both hope and missed opportunities.
19. "Surviving war galactic"
Refers to the Doctor surviving the Last Great Time War. Though it made him a war-weary figure, he hides his grief behind a mask of humor and defiance.
20. "These things are not fantastic."
A twist on the Doctor’s catchphrase “Fantastic,” acknowledging that not all his experiences were joyful—many were painful, frightening, and tragic.
21–23. "Fantastic or not / They all meant / A lot."
The closing lines reflect the Doctor’s recognition that, whether joyful or grim, every moment of his journey in this incarnation mattered and shaped him. A farewell to the Ninth Doctor’s short, intense life.
The Ninth Doctor decided to write a poem detailing the adventures he had, presumably during the time Rose was unconscious in the TARDIS.

Behind the Scenes of The Next Doctor (Part 21)
Excerpts from the podcast commentary with Julie Gardner (executive producer) & Russell T. Davies (writer/showrunner):
[ Talking about the scene where Mrs. Hardigan has the Cybermen slaughter everyone at the graveyard ]
RTD:  A Christmas Day slaughter. How marvelous
JG: How much do you think that is governed by the mood you're in while you're writing?
RTD: I think hugely
JG: Because that's a bit more adult, isn't it?
RTD: Yeah, but then I think my mood comes from what sort of story it is, because you're actually telling a story about a mental fugue, a fugue state, and that's something that I've always wanted to write about.  It's a genuine mental condition, quite a rare condition, and quite a debated condition, actually, but to a certain extent it does exist and it's a fascinating thing to write about.  Once that's the keynote, then actually you're in quite a serious area.  He's in that state because his wife was murdered and he thinks his son is dead, so his mind has literally just run away.  So once you're there you're not going to throw Slitheen in, are you? You know?
JG: No
RTD:  Or you're not going to do a Gridlock with talking cats. So it is my mood, and also I think a more serious mood is the mood that comes after 15 episodes [they had filmed 15 episodes in a row - from Voyage of the Damned straight through to The Next Doctor before taking a production break]
JG: Absolutely
RTD: ...and what I mean is it's more energy and more exhausting to be lighter.  Because the courage that you need - to put gags in, to put funnier creatures in, whether that's the Moxx of Balhoon or Bannakaffalatta or Slitheens or something - it's actually a bigger, deeper breath you have to take, and more energy [...]  Oh, I remember I had chicken pox as well.
JG: You were so ill when you were doing this
RTD:  I had chicken pox when I was writing this, and then it became bronchitis, all of which is making it sound marvelous - but funnily enough I'd actually already chosen this story
