Simple things make me happy. I was given a gift card (thank you!) for gas. I got a FULL tank, AND used my mperks (use the app. I saved $14 from my rewards) to get $1 off per gallon. I haven't had a FULL tank of gas in...a good part of a year. Having that LITTLE security makes me happy. Money doesn't buy happiness, it buys SECURITY, which is turn enables happiness.

Level 1 Dungeon: Grocery Store

Mondays are the worst days in the workforce and I decided to carry that into unemployment by going grocery shopping Monday mornings.  Specifically around 10 a.m.  My logic was that it was late enough to avoid the “wake up at dawn” people (the devil’s minions), but it was still early enough to avoid people with jobs or in school (frazzled and already in the worst mood possible).

Before I go, I sit down and take a nice thorough look at that week’s ad.  My store (Meijer) has a lovely app and with mperks (their rewards program) I am able to also go through and select coupons.  I cannot emphasize this enough.  If your store has an app, use it and use the coupons.  Once I know what’s on sale, I plan every meal for the next week.  I look at the sales first because meat is expensive and I want to catch that on sale.  With a complete menu, I make a grocery list.

I know that we all know to make lists and not shop hungry because you’ll save money and won’t forget anything.  I also know that we all know that fact does not stop us from not making lists and shopping hungry.  However, I promise it really does make a HUGE difference.  

Since I’m already shopping with a list (and am on a slim budget), I use the list to track the prices of everything and my running total (round up to compensate for tax).  This helps me catch the “sale” prices that aren’t actually on sale.

It may seem like it’s easy from here on, but no!  More traps await!

Brand loyalty is for toilet paper and that one thing that just doesn’t taste right as other brands!!  Unless you KNOW that a cheaper brand sucks, try the cheaper brands.  Store brand beef broth is just fine, store brand eggs are just as eggy, store brand tortillas still make tacos.  The accumulated savings would blow your mind.  Seriously.  Now that I’m paying attention... holy shit.

An easy way to conquer the boss of this dungeon, is to take advantage of the many rebate apps.  I use two and they are super simple.  They offer cash back on certain purchases and all you have to do is sync your membership card or take a picture of your receipt proving you made the purchase.  I find these much easier than coupons because it’s all digital.  I use Ibotta and Checkout51.  

Lastly, this dungeon comes with a particularly nasty trap at the exit.  How the hell do you carry it all in without dying.  I live in a small apartment building so I just use totes that I bought from Thirty-One.  I load the groceries in two totes, throw them over my shoulders, and attempt to not die climbing the stairs.

The reward for this dungeon is the candy bar you caved and bought in the checkout line.  Or a nap.  Or both.

*For added difficulty, have narcolepsy and attempt to stay awake in the check out line.  Or bring children, but I feel like that’s expert level.

Ingredients

2 tbsp Jif® Creamy Natural Peanut Butter Spread

1 tbsp Smucker’s® Natural Red Raspberry Fruit Spread

0.50 tbsp Butter

2 no Corn or flour Tortillas

Instructions

Spread peanut butter on the tortilla and fruit spread on the other tortilla. Arrange the tortillas, fruit spread side down facing the peanut butter just like a sandwich.

Heat a skillet over medium heat, melt butter and place the quesadilla. Cover and cook on both the sides, each side for 3 minutes approximately until crispy. Cut quesadilla into half or quarters and serve.

How to serve peanut butter jelly quesadillas?

Serve peanut butter jelly quesadillas as a breakfast or lunch or after school snack.
