A deep dive into AO3 stats
I was feeling a bit bored today, so I decided to create something awesome for myself!
Some of you might already know that I work in data analytics, and I’m not sure if everyone realizes this, but you can actually connect MS Excel Power Query to AO3 to sync your stats and perform in-depth analysis—far beyond what AO3’s built-in stats offer.
My stats aren’t exactly impressive since I only joined the fandom six months ago, but here’s a glimpse of the kind of insights you can generate with this setup:
I analyzed reader engagement with my fics by calculating the percentage of people who comment, leave kudos, or bookmark each fic relative to the total number of hits it received. This gave me three measures of engagement: Comment Threads per Hit (CTpH), Kudos per Hit (KpH), and Bookmarks per Hit (BpH).
To avoid skewed results caused by differences in scale across these measures, I standardized them. I did this by dividing each value by the maximum value in its column, which normalized the data and made the metrics comparable. These standardized values were then combined to calculate an Average Engagement per Hit (AVGpH) for each fic. This single metric allowed me to rank my fics from best to worst based on overall engagement per reader.
Here’s the surprising part: my best-performing fic in terms of engagement isn’t my most kudosed one (ranked 4th), nor is it the most commented (ranked 2nd), or the most bookmarked (ranked 8th). This highlights that pure volume of kudos, comments, or bookmarks doesn’t always reflect the quality of reader engagement relative to the fic’s visibility (hits). Instead, it’s the balance across all three engagement types that determines which fic truly resonates most with readers.
I also analyzed my stats per word to see how the length of my fics influences engagement. While it’s still early to draw definitive conclusions—especially since my longest fic is still a work in progress (I’ll definitely revisit the stats once it’s finished!)—there are already some interesting patterns emerging.
By breaking things down into metrics like Comments per Word (CTpW), Kudos per Word (KpW), Bookmarks per Word (BpW), and Hits per Word (HpW), I could compare how readers interact with fics of different lengths. I combined these into an Average Engagement per Word (AVGpW) to rank my fics by their engagement efficiency.
Key Takeaways
Shorter fics tend to have higher engagement per word. Some of the shorter fics perform exceptionally well, with high Hits per Word and strong kudos and bookmarks per word. On the other hand, longer works show diluted engagement per word, likely because their length makes them a bigger commitment for readers.
Balanced fics perform the best overall. Fics with solid kudos, bookmarks, and hits per word are ranked as the most engaging across the board.
Length affects engagement differently. Shorter or mid-length fics often generate more impact per word, likely because they’re easier for readers to consume quickly. Longer works, while attracting more total engagement, tend to have lower per-word metrics, likely due to their scale.
My top-ranked fic in terms of engagement per word is, interestingly, the one with the most kudos. However, it also has the fewest comments! It’s ranked 7th for bookmarks and has the lowest number of hits among all my fics.
I’m curious to see how these trends shift once my longest fic is complete—it’s a factor that could change these results significantly. For now, though, this analysis highlights how length can influence the way readers engage with your work!

X files mini review/analysis 3x02 "Paper clip"
Coming as the final part of what is basically a trilogy of episodes starting with the s2 finale, this was easily the craziest ep and probably the best I've seen in the show so far. I actually watched it twice!
First of all this ep covers hella ground. The amount of stuff they packed in here from mulder showing back up and the Spiderman face off with Skinner to secret files on anyone and everyone apparently including our scully and Samantha mulder to wait there were aliens in there?? To Melissa Scullys death at the end and MS final convo + hug was crazy. With cameos from the lone gunmen, scullys mom, Albert, CSM, etc etc. Lots going on and it still felt coherent and well paced to me.
Some highlights:
- how did you know? I just knew. -> biggest "we are about to kiss" energy I've seen so far. Also i more or less predicted this scene before we saw it from previous episodes, but it was no less excellent.
- scully verbally gunning for nazis was not something I knew i needed until now, please do more
- secret rich guy organization is kinda meh overall but I like the British guy
- Albert is the real hero of this ep for flying to DC just to pray over Missy
- love an old spooky mine, very scooby doo of them
- also the music? Went off this ep
- scully is really sweet for her concern over what they will find about mulders dad, but sweetie this is not the time also this man is out for answers
- sassy Skinner is my favorite skinner
- the file room/mine area gives ark of the covenant vibes slightly
- i love that mulder is immediately looking for her file and then his sisters
- fox mulder do not leave your partner behind in the creepy mine to chase aliens
- omggg the aliens running past scully got me
- looove the spaceship rising through the windows
- so that was a fuckin ufo and we're just gonna move on cool cool cool
- this shootout was fun ngl, v 80s action movie energy
- hm they kinda just get away, I think it'd be fun if there were some leftover aliens that took out the swat guys

- they both have food but neither are eating, that feels deliberate

- i LOVE LOVE LOVE this ending hospital scene, specifically the lighting and the framing of the shot. Her sitting in the chair, him kneeling next to her, the light between them but they're both in darkness from the back, ugh it's so good.
- I think its about fate... idk if you should say that to someone after their sister just died.
- I've heard the truth mulder, now what i want are the answers. Banger line!
- I wonder if they planned that hug or he just went for it but I appreciate it either way.
- I hope scully gets to shoot krycek. Let her have revenge i would love to see it.
Overall great ep. A little all over the place but in a good way. Rip Missy I didn't think they would actually kill you.

NYX #1 Explores Life After Krakoa
Hey! It's been awhile since I posted but I'm still around! Late July I did a reivew for Graphic Policy on NYX #1. I posted the link but I'm also going to try something new and post the text of the review here on Tumblr! I also would just like to add that as of this posting the series has gone up to issue #3 and so far it's my favorite book in the From the Ashes relaunch! Anyhow with all that said I'll leave you with the review!

How do you cope with the loss of paradise? This is the question at the heart of the From the Ashes relaunch of X-Men, and no title so far exemplifies that question more than NYX. The mutant island nation of Krakoa is no more and its diaspora is left to pick up the pieces. And like so many of the world’s diasporas, many Krakoans find their new home in New York City, holding onto what community they have left.
This first issue of NYX is told largely through the perspective of Ms. Marvel. She is an interesting character to hinge the first issue on seeing as she never quite got to experience the promise of Krakoa and is still exploring her newfound mutant identity. Writers Jackson Lanzing and Collin Kelly pick up the thread of Kamala attending college courses in NYC that was established in her last run of solos. The school that once was receiving funding from an anti-mutant hate group now is host to a ethnic studies course on Krakoa and its diaspora, taught by Xavier’s own Prodigy, now going by Professor Alleyne. Kamala is attending this course alongside her new friend and Prodigy’s former classmate at Xavier’s, Sophie of the Stepford Cuckoos. Other Xavier’s alumni like Anole and Laura Kinney the Wolverine also make appearances in the comic, as a bartender and vigilante respectively. Seeing Kamala bounce off between these characters is fun and interesting. Alongside these more positive budding relationships Kamala runs into several threats in this issue, one being a anti-mutant group called the “Truthseekers” and another being the mysterious self proclaimed Krakoan dressed in a mix of Magneto and Professor X’s Krakoan costumes, who may or may not have a connection to members of the books cast that should provide for some interesting drama.
This book should be a particular treat for fans of the Academy X run of comics, that subsect of the X-Men fandom have long been asking for a book that centers around characters from that series and NYX seems like the answer to their prayers.
I find myself in a curious position vis à vis this book. I myself am a twenty-something queer New Yorker college student. The characters in this book are largely teenager to twenty-something allegorically (and in some cases literally) queer New Yorker college students who are members of a diaspora. This is a setup that is quite similar to my own life. Thus I feel a certain draw to this book that’s subject matter so closely relates to my lived experience. I will admit to getting a kick out of seeing the imfamous Highline sculpture, the Vessel in the issue. I eagerly anticipate seeing more NYC landmarks throughout the following issues. The characters feel pretty authentic to my lived experience, Lanzing and Kelly pretty solidly land the voice of my generation.��
The art by Francesco Mortarino feels like a step up from his work on Avengers, the first page in particular is quite stunning, partly due to Raul Angulo’s quite excellent colors. The characters look appropriately youthful and the rendering of NYC is well done. I’d compare Mortarino’s faces to Luciano Vecchio’s work, but while it’s similar in the angler nature of the faces it’s still suitably different and it’s own thing. In general the issue doesn’t have so much visual spectacle but the art team makes it a compelling visual treat.
Overall NYX #1 isn’t the most flashy of first issues but it’s laying down a lot of interesting tracks, the characters aren’t really a team yet but honestly I think that’s not exactly what the book is going for. NYX seems to be telling a story about a group of young mutants finding their place in a world post the fall of their homeland, and it does a pretty damn compelling job doing it. This is definitely a book to keep an eye on.

Mysterious Affair at Styles — Ch 1
Alright, this is it! The beginning of a little book club blog where I attempt to read and document every Agatha Christie novel I can in order to attempt to solve it. And then, I'll likely review and rate the book at the very end.
We start with the very first novel Christie ever wrote, which is also the only one I've ever read to completion almost two years ago. I know a few of the details, but my memory is very hazy — so this will be a good chance to refresh it, as well as to establish the format I will be taking for this blog in regards to all the other books!
This should be fun. Keep reading to see me cover the first chapter... and if you're interested in following along, feel free to follow. :)


Based on what I know of Agatha Christie, I am aware that she has gone much further than any other in the murder mystery genre to become immortalised as the queen of crime. I am seeing the roots of that in her writing in these first chapters: I think the mystery will be pretty straightforward, and most of the characters can be summed up in one or two traits. But that simplicity makes it work — and they are still written to appear at least human in the way they talk to each other, even if they keep on dropping obvious hints that something is going to go wrong. I mean, how many times can they keep referring to poison in the same line as the death of Ms. Inglethorp? It's almost like a Greek tragedy.
Hastings is also a pretty neat narrator, seeing that the prose is blissfully composed of mainly facts and insights from him and the other characters, without slowing down the plot at all. I really like that! — especially while it's all written with the perspective of hindsight. Like he implies in the beginning, I can really see Hastings giving most of this as a statement in court. I am aware that he won't be present in every story however, so I am curious to see what will replace him later on. (Maybe it's for the best that he doesn't somehow end up in EVERY murder lol.)
All being said, I also do see things that have not aged well for this book — mainly for example, how Miss Raikes is described and the distrust the English characters have towards her. Not great. For her sake, I at least hope that her role in all this will be minor.

This is the beginning of the timeline I have created that will mark the progress of events. It's pretty small for now, but HAVE NO DOUBT that it will balloon out significantly. Most of the chapter is setup to introduce the characters and lay the framework for the murder in Ch3, so there's not much to talk about at the moment. But soon...

And here's the main family tree. My impression: I think a core part of the motivation for the murder will absolutely be about the inheritance of Styles, which seems to have been ripped away from John (and Mary) and Lawrence. And poison has to be the method too, from all the clear hints to it, to Cynthia being a dispensary and there also being a doctor who has a CLEAR knowledge of poisons. However, I think that doctor is very much a red herring. I think he may be more crucial to solving the mystery.
Okay, I think that's everything! As I go on, there will be more mystery solving and less discussion of what I think about the book. But this chapter serves as an excellent introduction.

@aslanscompass Thank you for your interest! A lot of the details on the Mel in my head are a little vague, but here's what I've got...
(IMPORTANT NOTE: We brainstormed a fair amount of this together, but at LEAST half of it is my sister's. Due credit to MissAppropriation!)
First of all, Twelve and River definitely had kids on Darillium. This is important to all the rest.
Mel (named after Melody, more or less) is either the daughter or granddaughter of one of these children. The hair obviously comes from the Pond side, and her taste for shenanigans comes from ALL sides. Both traits run in the family.
We're not saying Ms. Frizzle is one of her cousins but we're not saying she's NOT. That's a different story, though.
Mel goes out into the wide cosmos as an adult and gets up to some Adventuring.
Ainley Master, meanwhile, is getting concerned about the increasing amount of Gallifrey Intrigue trying to catch the Doctor in its webs. He's caught wind of the Valeyard plot and is trying to get to the bottom of that before it come to fruition, but he ALSO wants an eye on the Doctor.
He finds Mel, currently presenting herself as a Space Adventuress looking for work, and whose bubbly demeanor reminds him of Jo (which means of COURSE the Doctor will like and trust her). He offers her a job as his inside man in the TARDIS.
Mel, with all the chaos instincts of her lineage, thinks this is absolutely hilarious and also a golden opportunity to be friends with her Grandad when he's younger! Of course she accepts, like a shot.
The "Oh, we're meeting out of order, I'm definitely your companion though" setup at the Trial was at least half a con run by her and the Master. Probably mostly a con. Mel's idea, and no she did NOT properly credit her grandmother.
Anyway, Mel proceeds to have an excellent time with Six and eventually Seven, feeding the Master mostly-harmless information while he, in turn, keeps trying to unravel WHAT exactly was up with the Valeyard and what Gallifrey's gathering darkness might mean for him and the Doctor (HIS best enemy! No one gets to touch him and CERTAINLY not Gallifrey).
Eventually Mel has to leave. Reports are divided on whether she ACTUALLY went on to have adventures with Glitz, or whether she walked into a mysterious object waiting halfway between the TARDIS and the hangars, that soon disappeared without a trace...

May-Summer racing competitions MSRC
Pixel art for today based on videogame Network Q Rally for game console Super Nintendo. It is 16 bit Racing game. I played for myself this game at PC MS DOS. With my 486Dx2 computer, SVGA graphics. So, game looks similar. But, anyway, I think it is a little another game.
But I remember it, I and my bro, we play it. We like this racing game a lot. Beautiful three-dimensional graphics. Different views. From car, 3d view. And such a track along casual roads. As we think about it. Forest, field. Not exotic views, with super views. And about a casual views. Forest, river, bridge. We like this game for these things. And I remember green track, it was there. Lots of forest and grass. So, this is impression from this game. It is a very good racing game. And, I think, that version for Super Nintendo is also excellent! 16 bits variation!
And this is my drawing about the same theme. Racing starts in may and will continue all the summer season. It is a cycle of road competitions. Tracks are made special ways for this competition. But they are about a casual roads. Through the forest. Field. Bridge. River. And never through the cities. And more about an open space. Like forest, field. Road though the forest. And one moment, it is all the time a lots of grass by the sides of the road. And, maybe, a road though forest. A bridge across the river. Of course, you can to make a stop. And look a views. To make some photos. Your car. Yourself. And go next. Racing is about rally idea. All starts one by one, after some time. Using some pause between each new starting car. There are control points, check points.
And so it is going a racing time. And a well-known forests and fields. Racing is about a middle level of cars. They are no special setup for racing. And about a casual cars, that you can see at the streets. So, any one, who likes the idea can take a part in a racing.
Between racings there are some time to restore powers. And then - next race. It is its own class of racing competitions. It is very good about cars from 80s, 90s and so on. But you need to be ready for different road type. And take into account, a low or badly asphalt roads, or sand roads, soil roads. But asphalt, of course, it will be a lot, a lots of asphalt roads to be here.
So, racing will be intense. And sport uniform is very good to have. Gloves of a car driver. A helmet. To avoid some difficulties. And racing, anyway, it will be with comfort and relax too. And, from time to time, it will be hard about a making turns. And try to make a better position on the roads, and overspeed another racers, sometimes. And at some moments, it will be a tracks with almost straight roads, and rare turns. But, distance is more long. So, it is a mixed typed of tracks.
