MTG community, we need to talk

Liliana Vess was literally forced into slavery by a planeswalking uber-dragon with delusions of godhood, bound by a devil pact, into fighting her friends. She was compelled into service against her will. And even then, she still rebelled. She feels genuine remorse for her actions. As much as someone like her can. Said friends are hunting her down trying to kill her. She’s abandoned her own identity in self-loathing to join Kaya, Teyo, and Rat as a little family of sorts to make up for her crimes. And y’all still think she’s a heartless monster and literally Satan incarnate. Instead of hating Bolas for forcing her into this mess. Y’all are no different from the people that try to say Madoka Magica is about hating little girls for having wishes and desires instead of directing blame at the manipulative predator of the story in Kyubey. Miss me with this shit. I’m so tired of literal devils being let off the hook so fans can victim blame. Fucking stop it!

So right now im a very confused casual fan of mtg and I see a lot of my favourite mtg blogs going off right now. Can I ask what wotc did this time?

Well first of all the book was terribly written and clearly not edited. Which in and of itself is incredibly frustrating, but the most egregious thing that happened in the book (and why most of us were upset) was the handling of Chandra and Nissa.

SPOILERS FOR WAR OF THE SPARK:FORSAKEN AHEAD!

They book basically stated that Chandra was never into girls and that Nissa was different, invalidating her bisexuality. They also mentioned that the two always knew deep down that the thing between them was ‘platonic.’

Actual excerpt from the actual book:

People are also very upset about the handling of the other relationships established by The Gathering Storm and the first novel. The Ral/Tomik relationship appears to be on thin ice, and is the only explicitly stated real gay romance held by major characters.

On top of all this Jace states in the novel that his relationship with Vraska will probably not last, which was another fan favorite (mine too ):) Also no one is allowed to be in relationships apparently!

There are plenty of other things people are upset about (such as Rat actually being a sleep agent for Lazav????) but I won’t list them all here. If anyone wants to add to it, feel free.

More Secret Lairs...

I’ve said enough negative things about Secret Lairs as a whole, so I am specifically going to just talk about the latest one. If you haven’t heard my other rants basically it can be summed up by “I really don’t like them.” So, International Women’s Day themed Secret Lair. As much negativity as I have for the product as a whole the theme of this one actually makes me happy. Secret Lairs celebrating occasions is where I feel they accomplish their goal of being unique and fun. I do feel however that this celebration is a bit forced, and that instead of celebrating this occasion they used it as an excuse to monetize it. I feel like this particular drop is a bit half good half bad in terms of the fact it is both supporting the day and also just pushing a product due to it. The last drop was also released less than a month before this one goes on sale, so the timing seems forced to just fill out the schedule and International Women’s Day was just a coincidence they could use to drive the product.

Now, this drop is also going to donate $25 of each sale to a charity. Even though this could be seen as a tax write-off and publicity stunt, that does not change the fact that money is going to go to that charity. The charity in question is the World Association of Girl Guides and Girl Scouts. That is where the optimism drops in terms of the noble deed being done. The WAGGGS are one of the best funded charitable organizations there is. I do like that they are donating to a cause to help women for this product, but I wish they chose a better charity, one that needs the support much more. Aside from that, the WAGGGS do help and promote girls, so it is not like the money is going to be wasted, but there are definately causes that have much more need for support.

That’s enough about the background, how are the cards themselves? There are 5 cards given the full borderless treatment that was first seen with the Mythic Editions, and later on extended to be used for planeswalkers found in Collector’s boosters. This is the first time the frame is used on creatures instead of planeswalkers, so it has some uniqueness appeal, but not anything really novel enough that they stand out. The art is ok. It is a very moden-era MtG art style. Something you would expect to see on a MtG card, not a unique art style like others drops have had in the past. I am disappointed by this, I think they could have been a bit more creative with the art used; maybe emulate the styles of famous female artists or something would have made these much more special. Style aside they look really homogenous. Woman posed in a battle ready stance, with a vibrant background. Its not bad art, but they look very similar, which is something I personally do not like as much, but for others this could be a good thing as they match each other.

The reprints themselves are an interesting choice. “We've selected a few of the most powerful and influential women from the history of Magic.” Ah yes, the influence of two creatures  who were printed in Commander pre-cons and largely forgotten after the little stories that were made about them. Oona is kind of an evil queen, I wouldn’t exactly call her a good representation for International Woman’s Day. Sisay and Narset are the ones I agree with, they have had pretty important roles in the story of MtG. Aside from flavor, the selection falls flat in terms of content. Meren and Oona are decently popular Commanders, and Sisay was a card that gained a lot of use after the change to Planeswlkers being considered legendary, but Saskia is kind of a forgotten relic from C16 and Narset is a bulk mythic nowadays. The drop is very narrow, its kind of hard to see the cards included see much use especially since many of them do not work together. So its more of a drop for collecting than for playing with, and I personally don’t think Secret Lairs are worth collecting. I think most people would only want a single card out of the five and just have the other four sitting around in a trade binder or so.

The final disscusion point is the price. it is $49.99 making it the most expensive drop released. The cheapest cost of the cards in TCGplayer is $17, $11, $10, $4, and $1 meaning all the cards inside could be obtained for $43, so you are not getting “value” on this drop. Now, the secondary market price does not change the price for production, and it is simply a 5 card non-foil package which is the exact same as Bitterblossom Dreams was in terms of production, and much, much less than Year of the Rat. The price for this drop is basically only due to the money beign donated, which defeats the point of having proceeds donated when you make the buyer cover the costs.

In conclusion. I once again do not like this drop. I feel like this one has a lot of fluff hiding some very obvious flaws, and if the intentions were good a lot of descisions made for the product would be different. It was released way too soon to be special, its quality is low, and its price is high. You would do better to support the cause by donating to a charity instead and then purchasing the singles you want.

I read War of the Spark last night (yes all of it, all last night.... its like that when you get into a book sometimes)

Thoughts, musings, gripes and spoilers under the cut.

I feel like I should start off by saying that I really liked the book. Like, enough to keep me reading through to 7 am kinda.... but it... suffers quite a few issues.

 I have always been very negative on how theyve handled releasing their stories for mtg. One would think that if they’re changing how the story is gonna be released from online to book form they would give a little more context in what the hell is going for people who are just jumping in here, but it feels like everything the gatewatch has ever been involved in is required reading to get a picture of whats going on.That and the fact that so much of what the hell is going on depends on stuff that happened in a prologue that hasn’t even been released yet. And when they do exposit its just ‘oh heres a summary of what happened, moving on’. Not super engaging. 

Yeah... Kaya (who... I don’t even know much about but shes a main character in this) and Ral and Vraska and Lavnia and some other character i dont even remember the name of were all buds and then shit went down and blah blah. Why didn’t they include that in the book? Why did they decide to go the route of making the book very confusing and spoiling the future story that has yet to be released?? its such a puzzling decision and i hate it.

The story itself was uh... very much an avengers/smash bros “everyone is here!” situation ... to the point where its not clear whos supposed to be important? like the gatewatch is, and the people in named chapters are but they make a big deal about kiora showing up and she’s mentioned once. Meanwhile Angrath gets a bunch of scenes and basically does nothing with them besides fight some zombies.

I dunno, if youre wondering if you should read it, wait until this prologue thing comes out in june and hopefully you'll be a little less lost then i was when reading it.

It does really feel like just a story you read to see what the gatewatch and your faves are doing. But you know, if you like tamiyo or tibalt then too bad youre out of luck. 

I got lucky in that a lot of mine were IN, so.... reactions on that (more heavy spoilers):

Ral - I am ... so happy with him in this. He written SO much better than he was in the original ravnica novels, he turns out not to be a villain like I was worried about but hes still kinda the bastard we love. Also he has a boyfriend? Its like.. a major sort of plot point but not really explained because its in that fucking prologue i assume. He seems nice though.

Lavnia - powerful , all of her drama, is not explained at all within the book itself.

Vraska - She also suffers from “everything important in my character arc happened in a story thats not out yet” syndrome. But shes still vraska, who I adore and shes in the story. And she and Jace hook up at the end which considering that Ixalan was actually well written and made that seem Good for both of them, I’m fine with.

Sarkhan - I dont even think his story will be covered much in this unreleased prologue but hes like... not evil or mind controlled by bolas now and hes works with ugin instead (which i also dont trust but at least he doesn’t make him lose his mind). Ugins little quip at the end about “you must have done something to make him very mad was... real good. I hope he gets a little chance to be redeemed and be less an asshole

Domri - i always kinda knew that the way i had him in my head probably didn’t line up much with wizards canon. but uh... awfully bold of wizards to go “here’s the youngest planeswalker! he’s like 16! lets kill him brutally!” They didn’t really make it clear in the text that hes like... very young (younger than Teyo) and his stupid actions are probably the result of being a dumb teen, so he just comes off like an asshole.

Teyo - new, obviously meant to be an audience surrogate but he has a crush on a girl named rat and hes trying so hard so I like him.

Niv Mizzet - horrid bastard man who i love. if he messes up ravnica i will destroy him.

Honorable shutout to Ob Nixilis for being just the right amount of villianous asshole, and to Dack Fayden (who i did not care about before because again with how they release stuff... i dont even know how to get a hold of the comics/books hes in) who got a lot of the book time being built up as someone who was getting willing to actually help and be a hero and then just fuckin dies.

Also honorable shout out to Maree, Arlinn and Narset who didn’t do much but were at least mentioned.

As for some less favorite moments:

Nissa comes back to do nothing but destroy vitu-gazi. (And then profess her love for chandra which i think does make it worth it in the end, so). But does anyone feel like they don’t know what to do with mono green characters? garruk is just fucking Gone, Nissa only just showed back up and viven was similarly not super relevant except to say to people that Nicol Bolas is Real Bad Guys!

Lilliana just spent the whole story going “i can’t betray bolas or ill die so i wont but i hate him :)”, and then when she decides that she actually would rather die than have him win and maybe redeem herself gideon takes the bullet for her. It was made clear that shes Genuinely Upset about but ... with her its too little too late all the time. At the very least she’ll probably be dealt with soon-ish? 

And gideon... I kinda went into it expecting that someone in the gatewatch would die, either him or jace. There were all sorts of ways they could have just as easily not killed him but they decided to do it so they wanted him written out for.. some reason? Like I said, at least Lilli feels bad about it, not that it will stop her from doing future villainous things.

They seeded their future villains a little obviously (3 of them being literally named dropped at the end of the book and Ob literally doing an evil laugh and leaving as soon as he got the chance) but I think it’ll be nice to not have a “one big evil villain is responsible for everything bad that ever happens ever” scenario for a little while.
