After visiting the Louvre and Musée de l'Orangerie (see previous posts), I was able to round off my day's tour of Parisian galleries by visiting the Musée d'Orsay thanks to it being opening late, until 9:45pm, on Thursday evenings. Housed in a former Beaux-Arts train station built between 1898 and 1900, the Musée d'Orsay is an architectural masterpiece. Most importantly, it boasts a magnificent selection of paintings by my favourite artist, Monet. I was ecstatic beyond belief to get to see, for the first time ever, my second-favourite Monet - after his 'Water Lily Pond' - which is 'The Poppy Fields near Argenteuil'. (Contrary to what some visitors to my homes over the last 25 years have believed, the one I have on my wall is a £50 print, not the original at Musée d'Orsay which I reckon would be a bargain at even £500 million.) After having taken a thousand photos through the day at the three art galleries, I had 0% battery left on my phone and was relieved I managed to get someone to take a few pictures of me next to 'The Poppy Fields' before my phone died seconds later! See the world premiere of those 'The Monet Shot' (2023) pictures among the videos and photos below. . . . #musée #museedorsay #muséedorsay #dorsay #parisienne #orsay #parisvibes #musee #d'orsay #dorsay #paris #monetpoppyfields #museeorsay #francemuseum #photography #monetpoppy #museedorsay #orsaygallery #poppyart #museeparis #dorsaygallery #peinture #sculpture #wanderlust #monetphoto #monetpainting #parisjetaime #poppyfieldspainting (at Musée d'Orsay) https://www.instagram.com/p/Cn2VKyKNajt/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

Édouard Manet Paris 1832 - Paris 1883 “Luncheon on the Grass” 1863 Oil on canvas Photo is taken by: @robertpuffjr In 1863, artists who were excluded from the Salon by the jury persuaded Napoleon III to grant them a space on the fringes of the official exhibition. Critics and the public who flocked to this "Salon des refusés” discovered this painting by Manet, which was entitled Le Bain (Bathing). It caused an instant scandal as it represented such a marked departure from the academic tradition of only depicting mythological figures in the nude genre. There are no goddesses from antiquity here, but two naked women surrounded by men in modern dress. The work was deemed to be obscene on account of its technique - which was close to a preliminary sketch - violent contrasts, and contempt for the rules of perspective. (This writeup is taken from the description at the museum.) #Repost @lets_talk_about_art Claude Monet, Bathers at La Grenouillère, 1869, Oil on canvas, 73 x 92 cm, National Gallery, London. As probably the most important impressionist, Claude Monet produced works that are among the most popular paintings in art history. He is renowned for producing several series of the same subject including Rouen Cathedral, the Houses of Parliament in London, Train station Gare Saint-Lazare, Poplars and Haystacks. He painted them under different circumstances regarding weather, season and a particular time of the day. His most famous and beloved series is without a doubt that of his lush green garden and pond with waterlilies at Giverny. Most of his works are executed with short brush strokes and bold complementary colors. Monet is praised by critics and the public worldwide for his ability to paint the effects of sunlight and his skills as a colorist. This work was painted in the summer of 1869 when Monet lived near the small village of Bougival. With his friend Renoir he often worked en plain air at a famous pond with a café called La Grenouillère. The location was a popular hangout for people who loved swimming and boating in the summer and wanted to escape the hectic pace of the city. The work features moored boats in the foreground, a group of bathers in the background and fashionably dressed people to the left visiting the venue. #claudemonet #waterlilypond #monet #renoir #impressionism #boat #boats #frenchpainter #modernart #frenchart #museedorsay #pond #muséedorsay #dorsay #boating #bougival #museemarmottanmonet #marmottan #seine #haystacks #rouencathedral #poplars #river #giverny #housesofparliament #waterlilies #nationalgallery #nationalgalleryofart #london https://www.instagram.com/p/Cksb3hooeYd/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

Artist Rosa Bonheur, born Marie-Rosalie Bonheur (16 Mar 1822 – 25 May 1899),
was a French artist, mostly a painter of animals (animalière) but also a sculptor, in a realist style.
Her best-known paintings are Ploughing in the Nivernais, first exhibited at the Paris Salon of 1848, and now at the Musée d'Orsay in Paris, and The Horse Fair (in French: Le marché aux chevaux), which was exhibited at the Salon of 1853 (finished in 1855) and is now in the Metropolitan Museum of Art, in New York City.
Bonheur was widely considered to be the most famous female painter of the nineteenth century.
Personal life and legacy
Women were often only reluctantly educated as artists in Bonheur's day, and by becoming such a successful artist she helped to open doors to the #womenartists that followed her.
Bonheur can be viewed as a " #NewWoman " of the 19th century; she was known for wearing men's clothing, but she attributed her choice of trousers to their practicality for working with animals (see Rational dress).
Photo: Rosa Bonheur, c. 1889
In her romantic life, she was fairly openly a #lesbian; she lived with her first partner, #NathalieMicas, for over 40 years until Micas' death,
Photo: Rosa Bonheur & Natalie Micas, Nice, 1882
and later began a relationship with the #Americanpainter #AnnaElizabethKlumpke.
Artwork: Portrait of Bonheur by Anna Elizabeth Klumpke.
At a time when #lesbiansex – particularly tribadism – was regarded as animalistic and deranged by most French officials, Bonheur's outspokenness about her personal life was groundbreaking.

Jacek Malczewski (1854-1929)

Wait... something is familiar about this... isn’t that...? Yes, it’s an appropriation of Manet’s “A Bar at the Folies-Bergère!” Russian artist Aleksei Alekseevich Morgunov painted an homage to French artist Manet AND Russian avante garde artists in this “Portrait of Nathalija Gontcharova and Mihajl Larionov” in 1913 after his visit to Europe. Morgunov was a member of Russia’s first radical artist’s group, Jack of Diamonds and later Donkey’s Tail, both founded by Gontcharova and Larionov. Where Morgunov celebrated European modernism, Gontcharova and Larionov moved from Primitivism to join Russian Futurism. Of the three painters, Gontcharova was the most interesting, stirring up controversy in her day, joining The Blue Rider (Dee Blaue Reiter) group, designing sets and costumes for ballets, participating in the Salon des Indepéndents in Paris, and designing fashion. In 2007, Gontcharova’s painting, “Picking Apples”- 1909, set an auction record for a female artist at $9.8 million. #Manet #ÉdouardManet #FoliesBergère #AlekseiAlekseevichMorgunov #NathalijaGontcharova #NataliaGontcharova #MihajlLarionov #mikhaillarionov #ArtInstituteOfChicago #AIC #MuséedOrsay #RussianModerism #RussianArt #TheBlueRider #DerBlaueReiter ##20thCenturyArt #Portrait #DoublePortrait #Impressionism #ArtOfInstagram #ArtHistory #HistoryOfArt #ArtOfTheDay #art_encounters (at The Art Institute of Chicago)
