Lawrence Alma-Tadema 1836-1912 Love's Jewelled Fetter (The Betrothal Ring) Oil on wood Photo is taken by @robertpuffjr This painting transposes to Antiquity Amazone, a novel by Dutch writer Carel Vosmaer (1880), which recounts the adventures of the artist Swart Aisma and his love affair with poetess Marciana van Buren. On the marble terrace of a luxurious villa overlooking the Bay of Naples, Marciana shows a friend her ring, a symbol of Aisma's love for her. The latter is depicted in the portrait hanging behind her, inspired by the Fayum mummy portraits of ancient Egypt. At the top right of the composition, we can recognize the Boy with Thorn statue. KHLOARIS’s KF is one of the producers on the upcoming @tromateam opus, #ShakespearesShitstorm, and it’s a trip to see our name on a Troma poster. A lot of frequent KHLOARIS collaborators and friends are involved in the film, including @dylanmarsgreenberg * @amanda_flowersss * @badtechno * @double_dementia * @justinmartell and way more. Troma’s @lloydkaufman and Pat are super-nice people, and it was lovely to help them with a project. We were running some studios used by Troma for the film when it was it was shot, and we’ll never forget an incident involving a fire alarm, two FDNY fire trucks, and a certain underground auteur covered with face feces, being scrubbed down by a couple of production personnel. Ah, the cinema! The film premieres soon at @fantasiafestival and you can get tix now! It’s some film. #troma #fantasia #fantasiafest #film #fantasiafestival #khloaris #dylanmarsgreenberg #thebard #laurenceoliviereatyourheartout #shakespeare #greatworksofliterature #greatworksofart #pureunadulteratedhappiness #experimentsinfakefeces (at Lost At Sea) https://www.instagram.com/p/CD1uXMTDpYm/?igshid=utnjyik2ovx3

RICHARD BRAKENBURGH Haarlem 1650 - 1702 The Feast of St Nicholas 1685 Photo is taken by: @robertpuffjr This 17th-century scene represents a wealthy family celebrating the typically Dutch feast of St Nicholas. Neither St Nicholas nor his helper 'Pete' are depicted, which was common practice in the 17th century: the holy man stayed out of sight at the time and 'Pete' was not introduced until the 19th century. For this painting Brakenburg took inspiration from his predecessor Jan Steen. Note the little boy on the left, crying because, instead of presents, he has been given the 'roe' (birch rod) in his shoe, for bad behaviour. In the centre we see a woman teasingly waving the boy's shoe at him. On the right another boy is playing happily on his new drum. (This writeup is taken from the description at the museum.) Paul Delaroche 1797-1856, Paris “Portrait of Horace Delaroche, son of the painter” 1838 Oil on wood Photo is taken by @robertpuffjr The luxurious accessories form a touching contrast with the candor of the model, flanked by a young spaniel who poses as wisely as his master. Heir to a long dynasty of painters, the child is the grandson of Horace Vernet, whose daughter Louise married Paul Delaroche. (This writeup is taken from the description at the Museum.) John Singer Sargent 1856-1925 “Elizabeth Winthrop Chanler”(Mrs. John Jay Chapman) 1893 Oil on canvas Photo is taken by @robertpuffjr According to the artist, twenty-six-year-old Elizabeth Chanler had "the face of the Madonna and the eyes of a child." This portrait shows a beautiful, well-bred woman who has learned to be strong. When Elizabeth was still a girl, her mother died, leaving her to help care for seven younger brothers and sisters. Sargenrhas portrayed her in the elegant interior of his London studios decorated with two paintings that frame the circumstances of Elizabeth's life: a Madonna and Child, and a figure of an old woman copied from a portrait by Frans Hals. Perhaps the artist wished to show Elizabeth as a woman who, despite early hardships, was neither maiden nor matron. Sargent was often dismissed by his contemporaries as a "society portraitist," but his paintings never fail to convey the human story behind the image. Józef Mehoffer 1869-1946 “Portrait of Iza Axentowicz” 1907 Oil on canvas Photo is taken by: @robertpuffjr Izabela Axentowicz, neé Gielgud (1875-1957), was the wife of Teodor Axentowicz, a painter, founding member of the Sztuka Association of Polish Artists and professor at the Krakow Academy of Fine Arts. Mehoffer often painted likenesses of exquisitely dressed ladies against a background of richly patterned tapestries. In this case, the decorative setting is provided by a killm rug designed by the artist himself, which was part of the décor of the Sztuka Association room at a 1905 exhibition in Munich. The painting's elegance is underscored by the refined array of reds and whites. (This writeup is taken from the description at the museum.) Wtadystaw Czachórski 1850-1911 “Zadumana” (Deep in Thought) 1883 Oil on canvas Photo is taken by @robertpuffjr Czachorski lived in Munich from 1879. He found renown as a creator of technically-immaculate likenesses of beautiful women in historical costumes striking poses amidst flowers, antique furniture and old trinkets. This painting shows a lady in a palatial interior, wearing a magnificent gown the likes of which were fashionable in the 17th century. The artist brings out the grace of the young woman's pose and gesture. He skilfully suggests an atmosphere of pensiveness despite the subject's rather superficial psychological characterization. Henri Matisse French 1869-1954 “Chapel of Saint Joseph, Saint Tropez” 1904 Oil on canvas Photo is taken by: @robertpuffjr At the suggestion of the artist Paul Signac, Matisse spent mid-July through mid-October 1904 in the remote fishing town of Saint-Tropez. Among the many local sites he painted that summer is the seventeenth-century Chapel of Saint Joseph with its panoramic view of the surrounding countryside and Mediterranean Sea. Alfred Sisley France 1839-1899 “Street in Ville-d'Avray” 1873 Oil on canvas Photo is taken by: @robertpuffjr From 1871 to 1875, Sisley painted the picturesque fields, riverbanks, and villages near his home in the small hamlet of Voisins, France. A dedicated plein-air (outdoor) painter, Sisley preferred a subtle approach to color and lighting. Here, he reprised one of his favorite motifs: a quiet street winding through a quaint French village. Although the subject is mundane, the unusual vantage point and expansive foreground suggest deep spatial recession and create a sense of drama. This bold composition reveals the artist's awareness of different was to represent three-dimensional space, such as Japanese woodblock prints and photography.
