                Steven sniffs, eyes still teary as he lifts a hand to wipe his face-- for a little while, he had thought the gems weren’t sad at all to see him go, and as petty as it might have been, a part of him had wanted some kind of reaction. But of course they were just trying to be strong for him. He’s set on leaving-- he’s got all thirty-nine states to explore, places to go, parts of himself that he still hasn’t discovered. His therapist even agreed that this would be a good step for him ( he’s thankful for the video chats-- it’s helped...a lot more than he thought it would ). Still, he’s really going to miss everyone. 

        “You know, you can delete the save file if you want. I wouldn’t give it to you if I didn’t want you to play it.” He laughs. “But thanks. I’ve got a lot of stuff planned-- but I’ll still call! And visit sometime.”

Alas, she has immaculate recollection of the very time oft referred to. When hair had been unkempt, twisting & curving akin to a rose’s very stalk; sprawling akin to its leaves. -- chin set against her palm; one that had been mended again & again. No trace left of calloused spots, the bloody rims that would fit so well against a sword’s grip. ‘You used to be fun’ / AND YOU ARE A MESS: aye, she reflects on the present because two reformings later she feels oddly detached; as if their connection had been cut. -- it made her heart ache & sink, some semblance of compunction dwelling elsewhere.

     “Amethyst?” ever hesitant to call out her name; again, she broods / she ponders, lists all the things that used to bind them. -- to make amends; for all you did & didn’t do. “it might be a bit of an odd request but. -- did you mean what you said? About me... well, not being fun anymore?”

       For a while now, Steven has fallen into a sort of ROUTINE. Alarm ringing early in the morning every day, getting himself out of bed no matter how little sleep he really got, grabbing breakfast ( usually a morning protein shake now ), and heading to Little Homeschool to get started on the day. But ever since the Off Colors graduated and left for space with Lars, ever since the weight of everyone moving on while he stays STAGNANT began to sit heavy against his chest, ever since he quit running the school, the constantly packed schedule is gone, nothing left to occupy him anymore. He’s tried to fill it, but the whole gardening thing was a complete failure. And with nothing to distract him, his mind is even more of a wreck. 

     Laying in bed much longer than he used to before-- when he closes his eyes, he’s faced with nightmares instead, and it’s gotten much harder to fall asleep, left staring at the glow of his phone screen or the dark ceiling. He doesn’t know what time it is, hasn’t bothered to check, but the night before had been especially rough. He got a look at himself in the mirror when he finally managed to push himself up-- the dark circles do not look good. 

   Now, sat on the couch with legs huddled up to his chest, Steven isn’t sure what to do-- he hasn’t even changed yet. He should be doing things, fixing something-- he wants to HELP, but without any problems to solve, a constant feeling of uselessness crashes over him. The glow of the warp pad fills the room, but Steven doesn’t glance to the side until Amethyst’s voice registers. 

    “Huh?” Oh.“Um...no-- no, I just...fell asleep too late. Don’t worry about it.” He doesn’t mean for his tone to come off as dismissive, but frustration seeps through it. “Aren’t you s’posed to be teaching at Little Homeschool right now?”
