[0:31 pm, 07/04/2023] Sergio Benitez: Hey everyone, did you know that the original manuscript of Don McLean's iconic song 'American Pie' was sold for a whopping $1.2 million at a New York auction at the Christie's sale in 2015? This song is considered a masterpiece and has captivated audiences for decades.
McLean has described the songwriting process as a "mystical trip into his past," and it's no wonder why. 'American Pie' is filled with references to events and people that have shaped American culture. For example, the repeatedly mentioned phrase "the day the music died" refers to the plane crash in 1959 that killed early rock and roll performers Buddy Holly, The Big Bopper, and Ritchie Valens.
In my early teens, I first listened to it, from the moment I heard it, I was completely hooked. I … [4:34 pm, 07/04/2023] Sergio Benitez: Hey everyone! Have you ever heard the song "What I Am" by Eddie Brickell and the New Bohemians? 🎶 It's one of those catchy tunes that stick in your head and make you wanna dance! But did you know that it also has an interesting backstory? 👀
Eddie Brickell wrote the lyrics to "What I Am" in collaboration with her boyfriend at the time, Paul Simon. They were living together and working on a musical project when Eddie came up with the opening line, "I'm not aware of too many things..." 🎵 The rest of the song developed from there, with its playful, philosophical, and somewhat enigmatic lyrics. The New Bohemians, a band from Texas, provided the groovy music and the upbeat vibe.
"When I think of the song 'What I Am,'" Eddie Brickell later said, "I think of youth, love, freedom, joy, and curiosity." 🌟 The song became a big hit in 1988, reaching the top ten on the Billboard Hot 100 chart and earning the band a Grammy nomination.
So, where are they now? Well, Eddie Brickell and the New Bohemians are still making music and touring, although they took a break in the 90s and early 2000s. Eddie also pursued a solo career and collaborated with other artists, including Steve Martin. 💿
"What I Am" has been covered by many artists over the years, including Madonna, who sang a snippet of it in her song "Dress You Up." Eddie Brickell also revisited the song in 2018 with the release of a live album, where she added some new verses and a funky jam. 🎤

July 16, 1995 -- Aaliyah attends the 7th annual WJLB's Family Fun Day Concert at Rouge Park in Detroit, MI.
I wonder if this was that event that was talked about, during ABC's special, saying that Aaliyah put her foot down (to be the artist to close the show) in her hometown??
