Oh Lorde, We Have a Newcomer
Tumblr media
Her name is on everyone’s lips and she’s only 16 years old. Born Ella Yelich-O'Connor, Lorde is a New Zealander and she is new on the music scene with her latest international smash Royals. This indie-pop song has so far hit the top 40 in the US which is big for someone who comes from New Zealand.
“And we'll never be royals” – Lorde makes it clear that she isn’t just another pop singer, she brings us a song full of quirkiness and youthfulness. The song is set to become a pop anthem with the way it’s heading so far. Already hitting No. 1 in her home country and reaching No. 2 in Australia, she has now hit the States and it looks like she is there to stay.
As for the song, there is a beat which starts off strong and it is repeated throughout the song. The song itself is quite dark but as the song comes to the chorus it has Top 40 pop written all over it. The meaning behind the song is that Lorde craves the kind of buzz from expressing her own views through her music. She isn’t one to become vain and only make music for money. The song itself is unique and fun and it has a Lana Del Rey feel to the song. The song also has a hip-hop feel to it since Lorde has openly stated that she was listening to a lot of rap when she wrote the song.
Have I mentioned she’s only 16? Well it’s crazy, the song is a complete reinvention of pop and it’s a smart move. Music today is dominated by dance and techno tunes but this is so different and I’m sure it will be a standout track. Another thing to add is that she is the first woman in 17 years to top the Alternative Charts in the US with her smash “Royals”.
Be sure to check out her other song “Tennis Court” which is slowly gaining success in Australia and has already hit No. 1 in New Zealand. Her debut album is set to be released in September titled Pure Heroine and for a fact it’s clear she is already a heroine for people around the world with her music.
Check out Royals below and let us know what you think.
