tbh didnt really like how bisma's arc about her relationship to her headscarf was handled. Her braider was completely out of line and not challenged on it. There was this constant idea that being black and being muslim were separate. That she was exploring other parts of herself when being muslim and black isnt an experience that you can take apart like that. It seems to indicate that theres one way to be black and it involves being visibly less muslim and i think if we were shown more of a black muslim community around bisma and better rep of black muslims in we are lady parts this idea would be very obviously shown to be wrong in the show.
to be clear i dont think bisma having an arc around showing her hair more is bad, or even tieing it with wanting to wear braids like the black women around her or for any other reason, but the way its set up 'tobi, i'm muslim' 'yeah but we're black too', just sets up this idea of two parts of an identity in conflict with each other which doesnt speak to the way black muslim communities have tied their religion and culture together in such beautiful ways and i wish that was being represented on this show.

“women who choose not to wear the hijab are often vocally supported by western society while their hijabi sisters are ridiculed and harassed because this represents, in the eyes of the west, a distancing from the ‘oppressive’ islamic regime and makes her palatable and more like them - this is a privilege but it is borne of islamophobia and ignorance” and “women who choose not to wear the hijab or don its associated dress code are severely ostracized from many muslim spaces and face misogynist harassment and violence from within their community which often drives them away from those very communities” are statements that can and should exist. actually

there are a lot of things i’ve seen in the last month i’m never going forget but hearing a mother say “i swear i won’t wash them i won’t wash my hands, how else am I supposed to sleep near my kids” will be near the top of that list. harrowing

hey maybe don't tell queer religious folks to "give up religion" whenever they discuss their experiences with queerphobia within religious spaces? it's up to them to decide if they want to leave religion entirely. and telling them to "give up religion" might even just make it worse since it *kinda* reaffirms the idea that being religious and queer aint compatible which is not true??? thanks :)

I keep taking my posts on this down bc like I keep thinking I’ll wait until we get to the election I guess there’s a chance we won’t have Biden but I keep seeing other people talk about it and like no genocide joe is not a good option but we don’t get good options in American politics we get bad options and worst options. Trump is worse. The republicans are worse. Yes they’re all advocating genocide and there’s no universe where that’s ok but republicans are already adding denying refugees or going to war with Iran or deporting protesters or Muslim bans to their platforms and they’re only going to get more extreme
We can literally make it worse we are only going to have 2 choices and as bad as Biden is there can be worse

I actually hate advocacy work because I can see how much y’all don’t take that “activism starts in the home” statement seriously with how violently antiblack your communities are, how accepting of whiteness they are, and the way you don’t admit to yourselves the majority of your problems are because you lived most of your life being accepted by whiteness and now because of how racist the climate is you’re being affected NOW everyone’s gotta be about your issues? At the same time your family denies service to black people, yall will follow us around stores, yell slurs at us yet still copy us and I’m supposed to care?

HR. Ahmad 5:363 ;
Indeed, if you leave something for the sake of Alloh, surely Alloh will replace you with something better.
