Close Your Eyes
Warnings: betrayal, head injury, fade to black, unclear character status
"Just a bit further," Friend said as they urged Whumpee forward.
Whumpee walked carefully through the darkened cave. They didn't want to slip and fall on one of the numerous sharp rocks lining the cave. "Are you sure you saw a pictograph this far back?"
"Very sure," Friend said, their voice sounding stilted.
Before Whumpee could reply, their head exploded with pain. They tumbled forward as they screamed out. Whumpee's pain addled brain couldn't quite put together all of the information as they tried to roll onto their back.
"Don't move," Friend ordered. "Please, don't move."
Whumpee managed to flip over enough that they could stare up at Friend. "I....I....d-d-d-on'ttttt," they started as they stared up at the person they thought was their good friend.
The person who was standing over them with a very large and very sharp rock. Friend's eyes were filled with tears. "Whumper promised they wouldn't hurt my family. I...I'm sorry, Whumpee."
"Pl-Pl-Please," Whumpee whispered.
"Close your eyes. Close your eyes, Whumpee. It will all be over soon. Please......just close your eyes."
And though Whumpee knew that closing their eyes was a bad idea, they couldn't stare up at Friend as Friend brought the rock down towards their head again. Couldn't watch as their closest friend betrayed them. Couldn't watch as their world was going to end.
Whumpee closed their eyes. And their world became quiet. And still.

“What’s with all the apples?”
Prompt: Plants
Contains: nothing of note
“I mean this in the nicest way…”
She smiled, raising her eyebrows curiously. “Well, now I’m frightened of whatever you’re about to say.”
But the light in her eyes said she wasn’t afraid at all.
Although he felt like a buffoon, he plunged ahead with his question. “What’s with all the apples?”
“Oh!” She burst into a laugh. “My family owns an orchard. You walked—” She paused, seeming almost mischievous when she continued, “Stumbled through it the night you arrived. Apples are our livelihood.”
“Well. That explains a lot. I’ve never had stew that contained literal chunks of apple before.”

Failed Kidnapping
@mediwhumpmay: "We've got you." / "You're safe." @themerrywhumpofmay: dragged (snippet from Hidden Killer)
A man walks down the street, minding his own business. He's heard of the Holiday Killer but isn't worried about being a target. Especially as he walks in a populated part of the city. Even if it's eleven at night. "Ah, an unsuspecting fool," Austin smiles while watching them from the roof of a building. He completes his outfit and hurries down the fire escape. "Let go of me!" His target yells and tries to fight back, but he's not strong enough. Austin knocks down his target and drags him into the alleyway by the arms. The man tells for help, hoping someone will help rather than just call the police. "Hey!" Another man yells as he and another rush to the man and Austin. Austin let go of his victim and prepared for a fight. Until he underestimates the two men's strength. They'll blow my cover. He worries and rushes up the fire escape. "You're safe," one man says as the two help the victim up, "we've got you." The two men worry about the system of their victim. They lead him into the nearby Starbucks and call an ambulance. Aware the police will come.
"...the guy was covered from head to toe except for his eyes," one of the men explains. "But it was too dark to see his eye color," the other man adds. The victim confirms his assaulter is a man by his voice. The officers believe the man was the Holiday Killer, even with the little information. The paramedic believes the victim doesn't need to go to the hospital. The officers return to the station, relieved a target of the Holiday Killer wasn't killed.

“Lean on me.”
Contains: pain, injury, blacking out, exhaustion
“I’m not giving you a choice,” she said. Her voice trembled. Her fingers did, too, as she reached for him. But she persisted. “You’re hurt. If you don’t let me help you, you’ll die.”
Good.
He knew he should wriggle away, crawl if he had to. But when he tried, his strength failed.
“I’m going to touch you,” she said. “Try to stop the bleeding.”
He screamed when she pressed something to the wound on his back. Blacked out.
“I can’t carry you,” she said when he woke. “You’ll have to walk. I’ll take you somewhere safe. Lean on me.”

“Just forget about me.”
Prompt: “Break a leg.”
Contains: angst
“What, pray tell, is the point?” She crossed her arms. “You’re hardly in fit condition to go wandering through the woods. I doubt you’ll even make it there. I doubt you’ll make it out of the orchard.”
He began to walk away, one hand trailing along the fence. “Thanks. For your help. I can’t stay any longer.”
“I’m not going to turn you in.”
He didn’t turn around.
“If you hurt yourself again, break a leg or arm or hit your head—”
“Just forget about me. You should never have helped me in the first place.”
“I’m quickly realizing that.”
