The Ultimate Jerk of ATLA
With my ultimate re-watch of ATLA coming to an end, it's time to tally up the Jerk Points earned throughout all 3 seasons of the show.
Just as a reminder:
Book 1 Major Jerk - Zhao
Book 2 Major Jerk - Iroh
Book 3 Major Jerk - Ozai
And here are the totals in the quest for Ultimate Jerkdom!
1) Ozai - 1380
2) Aang- 1360
3) Zuko - 1190
4) Iroh - 950
5) Zhao - 780
6) Long Feng - 560
7) Yon Rha - 400
8) Azulon - 300
9) Pakku - 280
10) Bumi - 250
I was so sure that Aang was going to take this title, but then Ozai just pulled the rabbit out of the hat in the final Book 3 stretch. For someone who was featured in the show so sporadically, I am a little surprised that Ozai won this, but... I'll be honest, every time he appears in the show, I immediately want to strangle him with the charger cable of my android. So, in that sense, the title is well earned.
Some of you might think that it's completely nonsensical for Aang to rank so high and nearly win the Ultimate Jerk. Like, why do you even care about the show if you hate the protagonist so much lol, am I right?
I wouldn't say I hate Aang, I'm just largely ambivalent towards him, and it's mostly the framing of Kataang moments that make me want to slap him. Other than that, he's perfectly serviceable. As for caring the show if I'm not a huge fan of the protagonist... I don't see why I have to care about Aang in order to enjoy the show, not when the world is so rich, and the other main characters and the supporting cast are so amazing.
I actually have a history of not caring about protagonists in a lot of franchises I otherwise love. Kind of hated Crichton in Farscape, which is my favorite sci-fi series. Didn't really care for Sheridan in Babylon 5. I'm going to break a taboo and bring up HP, but yeah, I'm kind of in a similar place with Harry than I am with Aang. They're... serviceable, but I want to read about Hermione, Luna and Draco.
I could think of many more examples, but caring about side characters, underdogs and characters who are done dirty by the narrative is kind of my thing. Happy go lucky protagonists who get to have their cake and eat it too are boring to me, and can go and take a hike. It doesn't mean they're bad characters. It just means that they're not for me.

I truly mourn for Katara as a character in this adaptation.
She was all pent up frustration and anger, towards her circumstances who made her a caretaker, to her brother who didn't take her bending seriously, to her bending masters who didn't want to even teach her at first.
She wasn't always this kind and gentle figure in the group. She was impulsive, followed her heart more than her head. She was prideful, hence why she lashed out at Aang for being a prodigy, picking up quickly what took her weeks to master. She had a temper, which is why she butt heads with Toph, a literal hard headed child.
She was a 14 year old girl who wanted to be more than what she was, who knew she could be more, while the rest of the world didn't think so.
So she always made a point to make herself heard and known.
If the live action just had this, I would be 100% in their corner. I would deal with the writing cus that's just how it is with adaptations. But they didn't, so now I can't really dislike it, but it's not a favorite I could defend from criticism.

"You rise with the moon, I rise with the sun" is 1000 times funnier when you realize Zuko said it AFTER he knocked Katara out. Like homeboy probably practiced that line in his head all night then was like "no way I'm not saying this". Hands on the Avatar, ready to run away and he still had to make sure his crush enemy had the chance to hear his line.
He's so insane I love him.

The fact that Iroh never stops calling him Prince Zuko. Even when they’re begging on the street or camping in the wilderness, when Zuko is at his lowest, when he doesn’t even know where his destiny lies, when he feels like anything but royalty, Iroh never stops reminding him who he is. Never stops calling him Prince.
I’m going to go eat glass btw

'The Tales of Ba Sing Se'
I don't really have much to say about this episode. I like it just fine, but I don't know what to say about all these little vignettes that only tangentially tie into the overall plot.
The Toph and Katara bonding moments are probably my favorite of the episode. They have been working together well in the previous episodes, but this vignette cements their friendship. Them teaming up to teach those mean bully girls a lesson is just epic moment for them both. I love that even though Toph keeps repeating that she doesn't need anyone's approval, she is deeply appreciative of Katara's support and kindness.
It's great to see Iroh helping people without asking for anything in return, and him breaking down as he reminisces about his son is heartbreaking, but as an Azula stan, the vignette also makes me salty. So everyone deserves your help, Iroh, but not your niece. Okay, I see how it is. Still, a wonderful tribute to Mako.
I have literally nothing to say about Aang's vignette. It's a nothingburger for me. Would have rather checked in with what Azula and the dangerous ladies are up to, this was boring.
Sokka's haiku duel is perhaps one of the better examples of Sokka the comic relief being used in a truly amazing way that elicits genuine laughter from me even if I've seen this bit about a dozen times. It's just brilliantly written.
My god I had completely forgotten how nonexistent Zuko's game is with Jin. If not for the recovery at the end of the date and lighting the lanterns for Jin, I'd say Jin would have probably ranked him as her worst date ever. And Zuko, no, it's not really that complicated.
Momo's vignette... eh, bit of time wasting. Anyway, I have to say I didn't find this episode quite as fun as I remember it being. I guess it's an okay filler episode. But there definitely aren't any jerk points to award.
Ugh, Appa's episode is next... that will be a sad re-watch. :(
