Coming out of my self-imposed tumblr ban cuz this is the third post I see along the lines of "man we gotta jump ship" so here are some other ways to be social/do fandom/ect. I'm not gonna call them "tumblr alternatives" because I won't lie to you these are gonna be very different experiences from tumblr. But if you use tumblr as a way to meet new people/post your thoughts/do fandom/keep up with folks, then maybe one of these is worth looking into.
COHOST
I don't use Cohost so idk if it's good or not, but all the people who use it tell me it's A Whole Lot Like Tumblr. Got pretty mixed reviews on this one, people seem to either love it or hate it, either way you could check it out it's free.
PILLOWFORT
My main bitch, so I can actually talk about it.
Pros:
Lots of cool privacy features
Porn is allowed
Website has been consistently getting updates and listening to the userbase
No ads because it's user-funded
Cons:
Being user-funded means the website is frequently struggling with money
NEOCITIES
This one isn't really a social media, it's a host for websites.
Pros:
You can do whatever the fuck you want here
Cons:
You have to code it all yourself
If you didn't immediately skip this rolling your eyes, here are some ressources to get a blog running with minimum efforts, and a cool zine to figure out what to put on your blog.
FANLISTING
Ye Old internet way to find new peeps in your fandom. It's a list of fans. I'm listing thefanlisting.org here because it's the biggest hub of fanlistings out there, but there are plenty that aren't listed so if you've got a topic dear to your heart it might be worth googling up "[fandom/ship/character] fanlisting" and see what turns up.
Pros:
It's literally just adding your name to a list of fans. Low spoon effort.
Cons:
If you want to talk to any of the people on the fanlisting you have to actually manually contact them via email or website or whatever they provided for contact. High social anxiety effort.
Anyways that's all I got chief. You probably already heard of half of those and the other half might have made you go "hey wtf that's not at all what I use tumblr for why would I need these" and the answer is it's not my problem. I discovered these when looking for ways for me personally to do social media so if you do social media differently sorry I can't help ya. But hey maybe you'll discover something new who knows.
Preemptive answers to things I am sure will clog my notifications for years to come:
None of these are like tumblr! Look bestie this is like the fifth time people consider abandoning tumblr at this point you have to make your peace with the fact that there is no other website like this one.
The websites you mentioned are nearly empty there's no one in my community here! Bro if you want a website with lots of people you don't need me listing off where you can go you already know where people are going (aka: Bluesky) If you're so scared to be alone then invite your buddies to move there together so you can chat together idk. Be the change you want to be in the world.
I'm not gonna use these. Then you've got my blessing to not use these. I assure you you don't need to reblog this post just to tell me you won't use these. I don't care.
Anyways. Peace. Dunno how many people this is gonna be useful to, but if you wanted to branch out of the usual reddit/bluesky/twitter, hopefully this will help.
Bunch of pillowfort invite codes under the cut since I got a bunch. Sorry I got no cohost as I said I don't use that one.

Idk if you'll see this but I'm just starting out on here, what are some of the best (active ofc) Les Mis blogs to follow? Yours is one of my favorites, but I need more content lol. Thank youuu! 😁
Aah welcome ! I'm afraid that being asked this has made me briefly forget almost every blog I know XD
My first rec is the @lesmisletters blog; it regularly reblogs posts from people doing the current readalong, so it's a good place to find les mis bloggers (and see cool posts!)
Then there's @secretmellowblog, who runs the Letters server, and is very active there and here! A hub of les mis posting for sure :D
@syrupsyche , @hadleysmis, and @claireverlasting are people I know are very currently active, as is @lesmisscraper, who posts a lot of very involved gifsets!
And hey! Anyone else reading this--if you want people to know you as an Active Les Mis Blog, please raise your hand and say hello!
(I hope you won't mind if I publish this, in hopes that more people will chime in:D )

Finally, an intro/bio post!
Hi! I find accidental references to the band Tally Hall (some reasonable, some ridiculous.) My main is @joen-lenawley.
I made this inspired by @accidental-will-wood-reference, not aware that @tally-hall-referrer exists, but @will-wood-referrer exists too, so it’s fine. We’re like twins, I guess.
If you want to make a similar blog, check out my side blog @accidental-fandom-reference-hub! It has a list of similar blogs and some resources to help you!
I am involved in a few parts of dailyverse lore, mostly stuff involving Mod (Spirit Phone Daily’s possession, being on Nature Tapes Late Morning Live, breaking into Nature’s (not actually Nature’s) house, plus like one or two lines in the crucifixtion), so I figured that’d I’d also link @daily-blog-reunion-of-2024-lore. The character I play is named Yumi because You & Me. Tally Hall reference. Idk man I made it up on the spot but it fits
This should be obvious, but I don’t support Joe, Andrew, or Ross, nor do I condone shipping the band members! (My main does have Beatles yaoi though but like…those guys had weird repressed gay feelings)
Both Yumi and I use she/her!

I vented about this on my bluesky but I also wanted to express it here a) because it's my blog and I can but b) just see if I'm literally not the only one experiencing this emotion. It's a rare negative post? idk. It's under the cut. I'll probably delete it later.
I'm basically just going to post what I wrote on bluesky first and then kind of try to elaborate here.
I don't tend to express it very often, but trying to 'be the change you want to see in the world' as far as breaking through insular roleplay communities is hard when that's just what they are. Insular. And that's not really the fault of the players as it is decentralisation away from main hubs (forums, tumblr, etc) to secular discords. It's the inherent distrust that other people don't have your best interests at heart, or that they're going to be abusive/predatory/etc, that keeps people from reaching out. It's something I try to unlearn but also find is triggers the moment someone crosses a light boundary, even if it's not an obvious one? Idk. I feel like I used to be able to reach out to people much easier than before. That I could log into a game, go to an RP hub or event, and feel like I can interact with people other than those staffing. I don't know quite how to describe it, other than I feel like I'm sometimes pushing against a wave of people who crave interaction but won't/can't give it back. It's strange in a hobby that's supposed to collaborative.
I've just been finding it so exhausting lately. It feel like so many roleplay communities are tucked away on discords that are not easy to advertise or locate. It feels like, if I go to an event, the only major interactions outside my circle of friends are from staff members at the event and not other players?
Let's not even talk about how much the userbase of tumblr has decreased, as well as this weird social stigma that's two parts 'reblogging this diminishes the aesthetic of my roleplay' or 'what if people think I'm weird if I constantly like/reblog their stuff'. It's not even me. I see things where I'm like 'oh that's so pretty i bet it has a lot of notes!' and it has like... twenty.
idk. I feel like i'm the old man yelling at the cloud. I feel like it was so much easier to find roleplay a few years ago whereas now it's clawing through communities and trying to be as unobtrusive as possible. It's weird as hell.

I feel that deep in my heart. I've had to spend hours and hours just grinding monsters so I can get different weapons to try out. Idk if you know this but in the gathering hub there are arena quests that have different weapons and armor sets (you pick the weapon type, armor is set for you) so I like checking them out when trying a new weapon
Oh I play those! I just don't like that some of the preset builds tend to be awful and don't help showcase a weapon. Sunbreak's very first Master Rank arena quest having you fight Daimyo Hermitaur (which was one of the very first MonHun clips I uploaded to this blog!) where their preset Longsword build was the Remobra set which didn't have a single level in Quick Sheathe was like asking you to run Sunbreak Switchaxe without any Rapid Morph. You're going to be making a terrible first impression.
That being said it's so funny that Sunbreak introduced so much additional depth to the weapons that my farming problem became even worse since now each weapon could run multiple builds with completely different playstyles. I'm trying to master a Greatsword Surge Slash counter build that maxes out Guard + Embolden + Offensive Guard and Agitator where it doesn't use True Charge Slash at all, and it's so different it's like I'm playing another weapon entirely. Fun problem to have!

cuddling hcs ; abyss monarch cookie
Tumblr media
requested by ; anonymous (17/07/23)
fandom(s) ; cookie run
fandom masterlist(s) ; hub | specific
character(s) ; abyss monarch cookie
outline ; “Idk iif people will hate me for this, but how about cuddling headcanons for Abyss Monarch? With those tentacles there's potential in cuddles”
note ; fun fact for people that have been hanging around on my blog for a while: this request was originally sent over during ‘the tentacle saga’ lol
warning(s) ; none, just fluff!
given that they’ve spent a significant portion of their life post sugarteara in near-complete isolation, it’s safe to assume that the idea of ‘cuddling’ wouldn’t be the most familiar thing to them — sure they’ve probably heard of it before but they likely don’t really see the point of it beyond trying to conserve or share heat in the freezing darkness of the abyss in which they dwell
all that to say, when you ask to cuddle them their immediate assumption is just that you’re cold so they wander take off their cloak and wrap it around your shoulders before wandering off to find other things to help you warm up (e.g. blankets, thicker clothing, etc.)
it’s all very confusing for you, honestly, and comes across as a sort of awkward half-rejection of your request until you realise (several layers deep into the cloth cocoon you were being wrapped in) the miscommunication that had happened
so you explain what you actually wanted from them — that being the physical affection and closeness that hugging brings rather than just the heat — and they, albeit with some reluctance and obvious confusion, offer a slow nod and move to actually hug you
they’re incredibly stiff and awkward for the first while, sitting straight as a post and as still as a statue as you clamber onto their lap and get comfortable, waiting until you seem content before they slowly wrap their arms around your middle — holding you close but not too much so, but also not really knowing what to do with their hands to the point that they’re hovering a few millimetres away from your back until you gently guide them towards your preferred cuddling position
but, after a while of sitting there and just basking in the feeling of your body against theirs, they start to adjust to this new strange form of intimacy and you can feel the tension leave their body as their shoulders drop and their body curls more and more around yours
protective, warm, loving, and startlingly soft given their usual aloof demeanour — but you’re certainly not going to complain and spoil the moment, so you just leave them be and allow yourself a private smile against the crook of your neck as you quietly bask in this rare moment of pure affection
and as time goes on and they get even more confident in themselves, you’ll find abyss monarch cookie to be an excellent cuddler (though they’d vehemently deny having such a softness to them if anyone ever asked) — especially when they wrap all of their tentacles around your body and hold you so close that you’re able to feel their heartbeat as if it were your own and you have to actually try in order to not just fall asleep in their arms (of course they’d let you, but you want to make these moments last as long as possible so you fight that tiredness for as long as you can)

I'm seeing this discourse re: people going on hiatus/leaving their blogs and I'm just like yo that's not the actual problem
At the end of the day, fandom is never owned by a select group of people, or a specific trend (flashbacks to Cassandra Claire holding court at the harry potter cons back in the day and on LJ specifically). Tumblr, for what it is worth, is not the center of the fandom universe. And it can be very, very lonely when you don't write the 'popular thing' in your fandom sphere, or are on the popular team. I know my team black friends feel pretty damn lonely here a lot of times.
There's fear. There's jealousy. People are, of course, human and these are all normal and valid emotions. What's not okay is going into people's inboxes on anon and getting weird about it, or hate reading people's fic and making a joke/game out of it. Just stick in your lane. You don't have to be friends with everyone - it is, in fact, impossible to have an actual friendship with 100 people, let alone 20 people. But also we are a community, and we all need to do our part. You don't have to reblog everything. You aren't a hub for that content.
But reblogging what you do like? That should be a no brainer. Likes are nice, but on tumblr, they don't do anything. Just reblog the stuff you like. Also try give things a chance. Reblog things you think someone else might like. For example, I don't really care about Daemon, but my bestie does, so when I see things I think she'll like, I do try to reblog them! (like the Daemon and Laena cut scene that just released).
Our blogs aren't just for us, they are also about the people we care about too. At least, that's the tumblr world I grew up in, where people reblog things and tag our friends in it going 'HEY! relevant to your interests!'
Think of tumblr as going through the biggest thrift store you've ever seen and you find this... IDK cat statue with bat wings and you don't care about it but you yell to your friend in the next aisle about it so they can see it. You hold it up like simba to show!
Also, what the fuck, don't bug people about not reblogging your stuff or walking into their DMs to ask them to reblog things that's weird don't do that.
tl;dr, it's not even about reblogging everything, it's actually about just... reblogging stuff you like and this whole thing, imo, isn't about burn out, it's about the weird gatekeeping stuff I see happening to people. Pockets of people in fandom have made it an overall unwelcoming place and make people feel like they need to become content farms/write only specific things instead of extending their creative legs to write what they are truly excited about.

Tumblr seems to be sliding in a downward spiral, and it feels like the start of the end of a fandoming era for me. I've been through it before; platforms are born then die, and life fandom finds a way. I'm just not looking forward to floundering for a bit, and dreading what the next hub will look like.
AO3 isn't really a place geared or meant for the same thing, and that's fine. My only fandom-related activity took place on AO3 only for a few years between my leaving LJ and joining Tumblr, and I lived ;-) But during that time, I was my own little island in fandom. Reading, leaving a few comments, not being super active. It's only when I found a community again that I was back to being really active in fandom once more.
And it's not that I actually use Tumblr to post about myself, but I do use it to read and reblog cool things - art, gifsets, science stuff, discovering new fandoms, and the like. I'm not sure where else I could find my people, with sameish purposes. The other sites I've tried didn't fill that niche in a way that suited me, in part because of how they look and work, in part because of who and what is(n't) there.
I have DW & PF accounts just to be safe, but I'm not very fond of group chats Discord-style - and without Tumblr, IDK how I'd even hear of new communities where I might pop in once in a while, loins girdled and everything. The micro-blogging platforms are not what I'm looking for either. Sure, I can follow a few DW comms and blogs; I already occasionally do and I will be more consistent about it if I must.
But one of my greatest fear is that the next platform will be phone-based, app-only, or some such BS - and that is something I just won't be able to deal with. Phones are tiny, it's uncomfortable to write anything, I don't like touch screen and much, much prefer a proper keyboard and a mouse (copy-pasting on a screen? (x_x) << it me), art/pics are too small to properly appreciate, a phone isn't comfy to hold for a long time for me, and the app system means you have no control over anything as a user… and that anything there must be Apple Approved, dick-free, blood-free, and tasteless. And I say this as someone who's pretty much uninterested in sex IRL or in my entertainment ;-) I still support and want the tits, the gore, the everything, and as long as I have the tools to curate - oh, wait. Curate things myself? That's not something that's popular these days, is it? It's not going to generate money, if I'm happy ;-)
So… I guess I'll play some more on Neocities, and see if anyone wants to have webrings again? (it would be fun and nostalgic, but not really viable on a large scale; people who haven't known those would just laugh and point and go on the InstaTok of the time).
So here is my little cane-waving rant of the day! I know things evolve and change and that in ten years I'll be rolling my eyes at my moping. It's only that I feel tired of moving from one shitty platform to another, of fearing I won't adapt (or more accurately won't want to adapt given the annoyance/benefit ratio) to whichever new place things will move in a few years. It's saying goodbye to a former home, moving, and hoping you'll make another home elsewhere kind of sniffles today!
--
We already know the next platform. It has been Discord for a few years now.
If you want the one after Discord, I think you're looking at waiting things out for quite a few years (or until Discord makes a major misstep as a company).
True, real time chat is not for everyone, but small discords with well-chosen channels can operate more asynchronously. Just like a lot of people who hated the look of Tumblr early on eventually capitulated, a lot of chat haters have jumped ship to Discord already.
Realistically, 90% of fandom always goes where the action is, no matter how much they claim the features make that space impossible, and 10% disappears.
We might get the 10% back on the next platform or they might leave fandom for good. There were LJ-haters who resurfaced post LJ era.
But as for where you'll find out where people are... probably AO3 author's notes.
