Cookie Jar (M/f platonic safe/soft sfw vore)
A Tale of the Mystic Woods
Sophia see’s an opportunity to prank her half-giant wizard, by getting him to eat her. Also some Gardening! (sadly no actual cookies or jars feature in this story)
Princess Sophia and Yonah the Wizard are my OCs, they are both adults, and part of my Mystic Woods series. I commissioned art for this chapter! So that’s in there too!
Warnings: While this story is all about safe, soft, willing, silliness there are uhhhh some really strange references/discussion about fa.tal. None occurs. King Ben just is a bit... creepy and uncaring.
----
“So, what’s the plan for today?”
The Princess Sophia asked as she and her half-giant wizard ate breakfast. Toast with a citrus marmalade and eggs scrambled with spinach, onions, and mushrooms. They always had eggs. Yonah was a really amazing cook, and eggs were his favorite food. Well. Second favorite food. Sophia had to admit, the wizard made the best eggs she’d ever had, and she grew up with royal cooks! Yonah took one more giant mouthful of his own portion of eggs, and a drink of water flavored with a few slices of magic melon, before answering.
“Not much,” he took another bite. Clearly not in a hurry. “Was thinking we could garden this morning, then I’ve got some translations to complete. Maybe there will be time for a dusk patrol.”
No way.
Sophia’s forkful of egg was frozen halfway to her mouth.
There was no way he had forgotten. Right? Someone so smart organized and all. It wasn’t possible Not in her wildest dreams.
“That’s it? Nothing else?” she risked jogging his memory just to be sure.
Yonah was looking at her funny, so she finished her bite of food to keep a straight face.
“Nope. That’s it. Unless… Is there something you wanted to do?” He asked.
She took such a big drink of water she nearly choked.
“Ah- um.”
“I could try to put together a lesson, but I didn't plan on one today. Im still waiting on a few potion ingredients, which should be here soon.”
“The plan sounds good!” She said, her voice squeaking a bit.
He’d definitely forgotten. And if Sophia was a good friend she would have told him. Thankfully Sophia wasn’t a good friend. She was a great friend. His Best Friend. And as the best friend to an evil giant wizard she got an evil idea. All she had to do was not raise suspicion.
“Ok…” Yonah didn’t sound convinced. “Would you like me to clear your dishes?”
Sophia nodded and placed them delicately unto his palm, but finishing her water first. Then she zipped off, climbing down the ladder attached to the table, sprinting to the staircase, and leaping down the stairs to the bedroom. By the time Yonah caught up to her she was in her gardening outfit. Waiting for him, on top of his dresser, upon which was her magic wardrobe.
“What’s the rush princess?” Yonah said with a smile as he took his time changing into a sturdy button up and overalls that matched Sophia’s. “I don’t have any plants that will get up and walk away if we don’t water them.”
He adjusted the shoulder straps on his overalls and held out a hand to Sophia. She scampered across his arm and dropped into his front pocket.
“Ok then,” he said, smiling as he got out his sandals, gloves, and straw-wizard’s hat.
“I’m just excited to garden!” Sophia said.
“Glad to hear it,” he gently pat the pocket over his midsection to jostle the princess, and then with a finger ruffled her hair. Or tried, since it was in it’s pretty-permanently tight braid. He did nearly knock off her tiara but she held it in place. Then she held onto the lip of the pocket as Yonah went up the stairs, and she bounced happily.
She had to hold on tighter when he leapt from the tower window. That was never not exhilarating  and so frightening she screeched like a banshee as, with an earth-shaking THUD, Yonah landed in the garden.
“Out you come from there!” Yonah said cheerfully as he plucked Sophia out of the pocket and set her on the edge of a flower bed.
Then from a side pocket he took out a pouch of power that he dipped a finger into. He dabbed a bit of the powder and recited a spell in giant. With a puff of grey smoke Yonah now stood 7.5ft. About a third his original height.
There was a lot to do as it turned out. A lot of beds had weeds! Those damn seeds must just manifest out of thin air. The pair spent an entire hour weeding the flower beds. A few weeds happened to be spell ingredients, which Sophia Then wondered why they were considered weeds.
Regardless she attacked them with extreme ferociousness, getting right to their roots. Which was good because the roots of this particular weed were what they wanted. They were placed in a bag to be dried out over a magical smoke that night.
They didn’t take a break. Not really. When moving onto the Apple trees and other fruits the pair took random small breaks to sample the ripening bounty, but worked steadily to trim branches and check for sickness and fungus.
Some fungus was of course wanted! Yonah had recently planted a patch of moaning bamboo that was bred to be vulnerable to infection by void fungus; used to make magical ink to enchant scrolls and book pages. It was a slow growing bamboo but it was finally large enough that if infected would produce a decent amount of magic ink, enough to make the investment in the bamboo worth the money.
Sophia took a tuning fork and tapped the green-yellow rods. No void fungus to be found. But cuttings of the bamboo were taken. When the current batch caught the bug they would have healthy ones to replace them. Void Fungus was not kind to it’s hosts. Thankfully it wasn’t harmful to animals or people.
She started to worry that, after all this work, Yonah would insist they have lunch, and she would have to tell him.
And then she nearly ruined it by cheering when he suggested he get a little translating done before lunch. He was just feeling very motivated for some reason. She didn’t mind waiting a little to eat right?
“Don’t mind at all! In fact, you wanna eat me?” she couldn’t risk waiting any longer or it would be too late. She tried not to look at the clock.
It wasn’t really a silence, since Yonah continued to gather supplies around the room, until he stopped listening to himself and processed Sophia’s words. Then he stood up, holding a bunch of scrolls, looking at her as if he may have imagined her talking at all.
“You haven’t had lunch yet, so you must be hungry,” she added. /don’t push it too much he’ll get suspicious!/ “and watching you translate is boring.”
But then she heard his stomach growl and his cheeks grew red. “I- yeah!” he came over to the desk. His face was still a bit flushed but he was smiling as he leaned over, arms folded and he put his head eye level with Sophia. “A pre-lunch snack is exactly what I need!”
He reached out a hand to poke her, which tickled. “And I couldn’t refuse my favorite snack.”
Without hesitation Sophia got out her vial of glass paste and applied a small dab to her forehead and recited the words. Yonah closed his eyes as there was an explosion of sparkling purple dust. He felt the heavy glass form of the princess sit on his arm. He stood back up, taking the princess with him, keeping her at his face. He opened his mouth in a wide smile that revealed large white fangs glittering with drool and anticipation. She took hold of his bottom teeth, hoisting herself inside. It was a tight fit, which always made her wonder how he managed to eat people larger than herself. And she was petit.
Air wooshed by her as he took a deep breath and tipped his head back so that she slid to his throat. With perfect timing he swallowed. Once. Twice. Three times.
The princess’s feet passed over his lips, and he kept swallowing. It hurt considerably. Stretching his throat and putting pressure on his windpipe, but it was worth it. With a strong gulp she was down past his airways and he could breathe again. He could already feel her hands in his stomach, soon joined by the rest of her. Filling him up so nicely, he smiled and sighed.
“Mr HaEsh?”
It was like his blood turned to ice and then instantly into steam; the pressure threatening to make him explode.
He remembered.
Dare he open his eyes? He had to. It was too late now.
Yonah HaEsh looked down at the magic mirror on his desk. But instead of his reflection framed by the fancy gold filigree, the King of the Mystic Woods looked back at him, arms crossed. It was like the entire damn forest was looking at him. And the forest didn’t exactly have feelings like normal people.
/Had he seen?/
“Ah- Y-Your Majesty-”
Maybe he shouldn’t have said anything. Because at that moment Sophia started laughing hysterically, with her whole body. Normally that would feel GREAT; now it was distracting at best, visible and audible to her father at worst. Her father who spoke over the stuttering giant.

“We had a meeting today, or did you forget?” The King’s expression. Well it wasn’t neutral but it wasn’t full of vengeful rage, which it surely would have if he had seen his daughter get swallowed whole. It still wasn’t happy.
“No-I mean yes- I mean no, Your Majesty.”
“Then where, Mr. HaEsh, is my daughter?” The King’s emerald green eyes pulsed and narrowed, his face hardening like petrified wood.
Yonah resisted putting a hand to his stomach to try and cover up Sophia’s movement, or get her to stop! Her laughter was penetrating his brain! But that would be too obvious.
“The princess! She!” Yonah realized he had a bit of drool running down his chin, but he dare not wipe it away. “Is asleep.”
“In the afternoon?” asked The King, raising an eyebrow, “Surely she didn’t forget the meeting?”
Yonah gritted his teeth as Sophia screeched inside him.
He hissed out “No sire, she did not.”
“Speak up Mr. HaEsh,” the King Ordered.
“Ah- well, I don’t know, she was very tired after working so hard in the garden I thought she deserved a nap,” and he thought he deserved a freaking medal for coming up with that excuse and saying it as convincingly as possible with a princess thrashing in his belly.
“I don’t appreciate her sleep schedule being dysregulated this way,” said The King, his voice rising enough to make Yonah’s skin crawl.
It was so eerie, and so absolutely horrifying to see The King get mad in the mirror, while outside the trees rustled with the rhythm of Ben’s words, his breaths, his huffs, and his grunts. Yonah swore the vines around his tower were constricting, causing the stone to crack a bit. Could Ben collapse the tower just like that?
“I didn’t mean-” but once again The King spoke.
“And,” the king pointed at him. Though it wasn’t exactly precise through the mirror it was clearly at his stoamch very full of struggling human, “Who was that you were eating?”
“Sire?” Yonah didn’t think he could really hide it.
“Don’t play dumb with me, wizard,” The King spat, “When the mirrors resolved I saw feet disappearing down your massive throat. And they’re still alive by the look of-”
“A thief!” Yonah said a bit too quickly, “It was, is, a thief!”
Now he felt comfortable enough to rub at his stomach, “Tasty too, your majesty,” he smiled a big embarrassed grin, “In the excitement of the chase I forgot it was nearly time for our call.”
The King didn’t look convinced and Yonah felt his heart sink.
“A thief? In the middle of the day?”
“Yes Sire! That happens, not common but not-” was he gesticulating too much? Was he gesticulating to little? Should he just stop using his hands?
“And that doesn’t sound like screaming, it sounds more like laughter.”
/Oh GODS he could hear it!/ Yonah’s heart lifted but only so it could start racing
“Nope! Not laughter” Yonah poked his middle and Sophia obliged by screaming a little less happily, “It’s terror! Because I ate them! And I am very scary. Just like you hired me to be!”
“Very well, I suppose you should go wake Sophia,” The King examined his fingernails. Thanks to the mirror enhancing the King’s size, Yonah could see they were painted with black runes. What for? Yonah couldn’t think about that right now.
“And the thief?”
The king looked up, “Oh right, the thief.” the king eye’d Yonah’s middle like one would a disappointing servant  “Are they not dead yet?” Sophia had stopped laughing so hard, guess Ben couldn’t hear it now.
“N-No sire,” Yonah poked his middle again and was relieved when Sophia moved sharply and screamed at like she really was in danger.
“Not in the mood for a free meal today?” Ben asked, completely serious. “Less money out of my pocket. It costs a lot to... feed you.” There was a weird tick in Ben’s right cheek. Like he had been about to mention the fact that Yonah gives adventurers gold when he lets them live, which was most of the time, and that money was technically King Ben’s, even if most of it was deducted from Yonah’s salary.
“Not with you watching, my liege,” Yonah said, trying to sound like he cared as little for the thieves’ lives as Ben did.
“It’s not as if I can see whatever horrorshow is going on in there,” he said.
With Sophia being the one in there, that was the last thing Yonah wanted to think about.
“Fine, spit them out.”
Gods those gem-like eyes were so bright yet so hollow. Yonah wouldn’t be surprised if Ben COULD see though mere barriers like flesh, but also was thankful he couldn’t.
Yonah bowed, unable to enjoy Sophia being squished inside him.
“Where are you going?” Ben said as Yonah turned to the stairwell.
“To- spit out the thief and wake-”
“You cannot do that here? I’ve seen it before”
He had. Once. When interrogating a prisoner of war, Ben supervised Yonah swallowing, threatening, and spitting up fairy. That had been a feat. Fairies were larger than humans. Even thinking about it briefly made his throat sore.
Yonah’s face turned so red it was like a tomato. If he spat Sophia out that would be it. In the moment he could not fathom what Ben might do to him if Sophia slid out of his mouth. Could he somehow cast a disguise spell on her? No Ben would see the cast.
Thankfully Ben heaved a huge sigh, “I don’t see why you’re so self-conscious, go ahead.” He waved him off and Yonah disappeared down the trap door.
---
PERFECT TIMING!
Sophia couldn’t see what had gone on outside, but as Yonah stiffened, everything around her going tense, the pulse around her accelerating and his quavering voice say “Your majesty,” she knew she had done it.
While she had wanted to try and hear what her father was saying she could not help but burst into laughter as soon as she imagined the look on Yonah’s face. Probably guilty, smiling, bewilderment. Oh she wished she could see! But if she could have done that, this would be a very different prank.
It wasn’t hard to guess her father’s words based on Yonah’s responses.
Deciding to help her poor giant she switched from laughter to just yelling when Yonah poked at her and insisted the sound coming from his middle was terror. That should be pretty convincing, though it was hard to sound scared when riding the high of such a brilliant prank.
Eventually she calmed down to hear her father. She loved her dad. She really did. But 30 years ruling two kingdoms; 30 years being joined magically to The Mystic Woods, a mind as far from human as one could get, he tended to be a bit heartless. Ben’s body, mind, and spirit were part of a vast ecosystem that had things living and dying in it every day. So why would random adventurers dying, even eaten by one of his employees, be of much concern to him?
Still, she felt proud of Yonah for managing to get away to “wake her up” and “spit out the thief”. She did not resist when Yonah threw up into his bathroom sink.
“That was ! A dirty trick!”
He coughed out a bit more fluid and did not bother to aim away from Sophia. He didn’t speak again until he regained his breath. By then Sophia had washed and dried off, and returned to flesh of her own accord. She sat on the towel and looked at him with big innocent brown eyes.
Ok not innocent, but definitely not guilty or regretful. He reached out to grab her but she grabbed him back, wrapping her arms around his fingers. He wriggled his fingers and she laughed, not at him, but with him. He did pull her to the edge of the counter and kissed her side. She tried to get away from his scratchy facial hair but failed.
“How long were you planning that?” he asked, his chin in her lab.
“Since this morning,” she said, shoving him away.
He obliged but left one arm on the counter for her to climb across to his shoulder. She lay into his hair. The dark curls so fluffy and soft.
“Couldn’t believe my luck. Something like our monthly meetings slipping through that big wizard brain of yours!” She scratched his head, making one side of his hair stick up funny. Then she sat down and he put on his hat.
“Let’s not keep my father-” she paused.
“The King-” Yonah smiled.
She laughed “Let’s not keep him waiting.”
Ben had not moved a muscle as far as Yonah could tell, when he sat at his desk and tried to smile without conveying that he had in fact, not eaten a thief, but the king’s daughter. Sophia scrawled down from his shoulder and leapt onto the desk.
“Hi dad!” she said.
“Hello Sophia”
And no, it wasn’t really comforting to see kind emotions in the face of The Mystical Majesty, if anything it made him more eerie. He was capable of human feelings, or at least he remembered what they were enough to mimic them.
It never really bothered Yonah before but. He barely noticed. Oh sure Ben unnerved him greatly. Yet he hadn’t registered just how detached The King was.
Not until he had figured out that Sophia was already chosen as the next Mystic King. Would she slowly turn into an unfeeling vessel for the forest? Would he lose her? He was to train her, prepare her to be King. Maybe that meant she could avoid this fate.
Shit Ben was asking him a question!
Shit Sophia was answering for him!
“-unconscious when they came out. We put washed them off and put them in a box.”
Ben was back to his normal, detached irritation. But there was a flicker of amusement. Still not comforting.
“You woke her before spitting the thief up?”
He had to nod; Sophia was in charge of the narrative now.
“Cutting it a bit close weren’t we?”
/why did he care? Ben was just fine with letting this hypothetical thief die while they had a not-so-pleasant chat/
“No sir, fainted from fright. Happens all the time. They were kicking and screaming until-”
“I don’t actually want the details Mr HaEsh.”
Yonah wasn’t so sure about that. King Ben seemed to have some morbid fascinations. Maybe when one’s mind is so expanded you need some really extreme diversions to peak your interest.
With so much time wasted the talk was very brief. Ben was actually legitimately pleased with Sophia’s progress. In the last month she’d met with several insular communities in the woods. One in particular was hardly more than a rumor. The fact that she’d made contact was a significant achievement. Not that she knew why, but she was glad to go on about the new spell she’d learned, none the wiser about her growing connection to The Woods.
Still, Yonah didn’t breathe easy until Ben’s face faded from the mirror.
Sophia sighed and turned to look up at him.
“Im going to get you back for this,” he said, “especially since you were this close” he held his thumb and pointer finger about an inch apart, “To Ben seeing you eaten. He saw you feet.”
“Ah!” She finally looked guilty, “Well- I couldn’t resist”
No. She wouldn’t be Sophia if she’d done anything else. He even suspected that his mirror had delayed establishing the link and made a mental note to be kinder to it.
“-if you want to eat me again.”
Yonah scooped her up, cradling her in his arms. “You’ve certainly earned the honor of being my dessert tonight,” he cooed. “And I’d better get some belly rubs. But that doesn’t count as payback.”
“You’re going to eat me now too?”
He chuckled and shook his head, “No. We should have actual lunch; like we normally do after talking with your father-”
“The King!” she declared, standing up unsteady and pulling herself onto his shoulder.
He laughed so hard she almost fell back into his arms.
And they went downstairs.

Arplis - News: My 22 Goals for 2019 Week 49 of 52
My 22 Goals for 2019
Goal #1 Spend More Time Doing What I Love
Red alert people, RED ALERT. It was 6 degrees this morning when I woke up. SIX!!! That.Is.Chilly. The Girl and I were going to walk Lucy on the beach this morning but those plans have been scraped. Gaaaa. I think if its 6 degrees outside, all bets are off and you can most certainly declare it a pajama day. Whos with me on this?
Goal #2 Garden, Garden, Garden
Garden are done for the year. Yipee!
Goal #3 Plant an Orchard {Calling it Quits on this one.}
Lemon baby #3 is on the way and we are patiently awaiting her arrival.
Goal #4 Gussy Up the Potting Shed Done!
I gussied up the potting shed at our old house, but I would like to add some sort of potting station to the backyard here somewhere, but Im not sure where I would put it yet.
I did come across this photo on Author Susan Branchs Instagram page though of a picture she tooth at Colonial Williamsburg. Isnt it cute? I think I need one of those.
Goal #5 Grow Enough Extra Vegetables, Eggs and Flowers to Earn $1500 at my little roadside vegetable stand.
It was totally my intention to grow a ton of fruits and vegetables to sell at the farm-stand when I made my list of goals for 2019 last winter, but then we moved. So, that whole goal was sort of a bust. I do miss it though.
Goal #6 Finish Every Single Unfinished Rug Hooking Project in My Pattern Bin + 10 Things from back Issues of Magazines/Books Ive Been Meaning to Make.
While I didnt add any new finished hooked rug pieces in my Etsy shop this past week, I did hook 4 totally new rugs {1 of which will become a kit and 2 will be offered as patterns} as well as hand dyed a bunch of wool {that I was able to get listed in my Etsy shop}.
I have decided to go back to my old schedule of only listing new hooked rugs items on the first Friday of every month for next year as it seems less stressful to me. It allows me more time to hook, rather than stopping every few days to take photo, write up description and then post a single piece online. Doing it all in one big swoop seems less chaotic to me.
73 rugs in my pattern bin {now down to 16} < SO CLOSE!
183 hooked flowers {finished 150, now down to 33}
10 things from back issues of magazines {finished 0}

Goal #15 Fill 100 Canning Jars 72 down, 28 to go.
I made a batch of Christmas Jam for gift giving PLUS I tried a new recipe {that was inspired by Mrs. HB} this past week and the HH and I loved it so much, that Ill be making another batch {or maybe 2} of it today {Ill share the recipe on Tuesday}.
So far this year Ive I canned:
9 Jars of..
6 jars Christmas Jam
7 jars Spiced Pomegranate Jelly
7 jars Peach Jam
7 jars of Strawberry Jam
15 jars of Carrot Cake Jam
15 jars of Spiced Pear Jam
4 jars of Almond Pears.
Goal #16 Finish Furnishing Our House
We finished the roman shades for the kitchen nook and kitchen window. I plan on taking a break from making roman shades for the next month so I can finish making kits for my Etsy shop and paint out the entire kitchen area as well as finish a couple of art projects for the walls.
Goal #17 52 Dates with the HH {44 down, 8 to go}
The HH and I went on 2 date days this past week and one of them was to the Sabbathday Lake Shaker Village for their Shaker Christmas Fair and it was so overwhelming, we left after 5 minutes.
Overwhelming in the sense that although we could tell there was going to be a lot of people at the event by the distance we had to walk to the village, what we werent expecting was that once we walked in the doors of the trustees office {where the craft fair was being held}, it was SHOULDER to SHOULDER.
Like, being at a rock concert crowded. The HH didnt even make it 2 feet in before walking out and it took me nearly 5 minutes to get from the entrance and through 3 rooms and back out the door again without even being able to look or pick up anything it was so crowded. It was nuts. And totally not in the calm, welcoming Shaker spirit and all we wanted to do was leave. And so we did.
I do want to go back though at some point to visit the museum, but it will have to be an ordinary weekday with nothing on the event calendar, thats for sure.
Goal #18 Take One Adult Education Class Done {Ive taken 3!}
Block Printing Class with my neighbor.
Spoon Carving Classwith Heather.
Mini pottery lesson {I loved it! and now I want to sign up for a full class}
Goal #19 Secret Holiday Project{s}
Block print towels
Seed packet wreaths
Tea Bag Trees
Goal #20 Create 12 Wowie Zowie Party Platters
8 down, 4 to go. We are planning on making #9 tonight!
Goal #21 Visit 12 General Stores
10 down 2 to go. We visited a new country store yesterday!! The kind that offers human made {and local} baskets to customers to do their shopping with. Ill tell you all about it next week.

Harrisville General Store
Dodges Store in New Boston, New Hampshire
Zebs General Store in North Conway, New Hampshire

Husseys General Store in Windsor, Maine
Goal #22 Compete with Carole.. Get on My Front Door Game On

PAINTED CHRISTMAS COOKIES // CHRISTMAS COOKIE ORNAMENTS
Every Christmas I host a cookie swap. All of my girlfriends come over with a batch of cookies, I plan some kind of DIY, and I make a giant batch of hot cocoa with marshmallows – bourbon optional. It’s also the one event where I put down my phone and just hang out instead of worrying about posting everything on social media. Cookies are sacred, dammit! Last year I tried something new. Instead of doing DIY cookie tins for people to take their cookies home, I organized DIY cookie christmas ornaments. I made a bunch of short bread cookies, decorated them with plain white icing, prepped them to be an ornament by punching holes in them, and then let my friends do the rest. By halfway through the evening it turned into an arts and crafts sessions, with everyone working quietly on their cookies. My friend Sabina is an actual artist, so her cookies (the very impressive ones pictured below) were ridiculously gorgeous. The George Melies style man in the moon kills me. But don’t worry! If you lack artistic ability like me, just do swashes of color and top it with gold. Everything looks a little better with gold.
INGREDIENTS (SHORTBREAD COOKIES)
Makes 18 shortbread cookies
2 cups all-purpose flour
1/4 teaspoon salt
1/2 cup powdered sugar
8 ounces unsalted butter, room temperature
1 teaspoon pure vanilla extract
DIRECTIONS
Pre Heat oven to 350F.
Sift together the flour, salt, and powdered sugar. Using electric mixer, beat butter in large bowl until light and fluffy. Add the flour and sugar a third at a time on low speed, then add the vanilla. Form the dough into a ball (or into a few balls, if making a big batch). Wrap the ball in plastic, press into a thick disc, and chill in the fridge until cold, about 30 minutes.
On a well floured surface, roll out the dough to a 1/4 inch thick, and cut out using cookie cutters. Roll up the dough, re-roll the dough, and cut out the remaining cookie cutters. Repeat until you’re done with dough.  If turning these into ornaments, use a skewer to poke a hole (at least 1/8″ wide) about a 1/2″ in from the edge of the cookie.
Bake for 15 to 20 minutes, until the cookies are barely golden brown around the edges.
Remove from the oven and move the cookies to a cooling rack to cool completely.
INGREDIENTS (ROYAL ICING)
1 pound powdered sugar (3 3/4 cups)
2 egg whites
blue food coloring
gold flakes
DIRECTIONS
In the bowl of an electric mixer fitted with the paddle attachment, add the powdered sugar. Mixing on low speed, add a scant 1/2 cup water. For a thinner consistency, usually used for flooding, add more water. A thicker consistency is generally used for outlining and adding details. Mix until icing holds a ribbonlike trail on the surface of the mixture for 5 seconds when you raise the paddle.
Spread the icing on each cookie, and set the cookies aside for 30 minutes to set. When the cookies are ready, decorate with food coloring, paint brushes, and finish with gold flakes. String some twine through the hole (you may have to repunch the hole with a skewer) if turning them into ornaments.

Review - Secret Empire, June Part 2
THE SECOND ROUND OF JUNE MADNESS
Things got delayed due to the holiday and Anime Expo, but here it is the second half of June’s Secret Empire comics.  This time around it wasn’t a fun batch, but there were a couple fun stories. Overall, I really wish this wasn’t such a long event.  Not much happens issue to issue and once you get past the shock factor of this stupid concept there really isn’t much else going on.  While there is the chance that there will be a big exciting payoff for all this, I really doubt it will make up for the difficulty of sticking with this event.  However, until that time please enjoy my thoughts on several more comics in this never ending event.
Secret Empire: Brave New World 2: Three new stories come to fill in some gaps in the saga.  The first story follows Shaun as he Mary Sue’s his way into the role of the new Patriot. This character has been sulking about the event and previous stories and finally got his chance to be a hero.  I’d care far more if he felt like a real character. The second story is a comedy adventure with Bob Agent of Hydra as he battles an inhuman.  It’s a nice diversion and far better than the previous issue’s comedy story.  The final story is a follow up to the Invaders story from the previous issue.  The time a rebel attack sends Namor and his troops into chaos while the prisoners attempt to escape.  Overall this was a better issue than the previous one, but the art can be a little mixed.  The Bob story is short and the art a little bland, while the faces in the Invaders story are generally ridiculous.  Despite the flaws this was a fine issue, but this mini-series isn’t really worth reading yet.
Secret Empire #5: It’s hard to not judge a book by its cover when the art is weird and disproportionate and the credits make me want to scream out in rage.  The story jumps around all over the place and at times can be hard to follow.  Black Widow is ‘captured’ while the Underground try to get more of the fragments, and the Mutants are doing some shady things behind the scenes.  The ending comes with an attack on the Underground and a dumb reveal about the strange shadowy place that keeps popping up in the story.  The art team is made up of a large group this time around making this comic a bizarre reading experience due to the style changing every three or so pages.  The series just gets worse and worse as it continues.  The art is falling apart, the story is too convoluted for its own good and finishing an issue makes me feel like I wasted a chuck of my life.
Amazing Spider-Man 29: Another comic that feels like it should have been released in May.  The story begins prior to the events of Secret Empire with Peter Parker giving an interview about the recent events in his series.  This is followed by the attacks starting and Spider-Man facing off with the Superior Octopus.  The writing is strong as both Otto and Peter are written with wit and humor.  The art is also great and makes the fight very intense. It’s nice to see the first showdown between Otto and Peter after everything that has happened, but tying it into Secret Empire means that things will be dragging for a bit.  This is a good issue overall, but I’m concerned about the direction of the story.
Occupy Avengers 8: This is an odd side story and sadly not really worth reading.  The story follows Hawkeye’s team as they protect famers during the Hydra occupation. This leads them into coming up with a bigger plan to strike back.  The writing is pretty weak.  This book is filled with weak banter, terrible jokes, and some stereotypical dialogue.  None of the characters are memorable and the only saving grace of this story is that it shows a different side of this war.  The art is serviceable, but nothing special.  This is a skippable story, but it isn’t necessarily a terrible story, just weak.
USAvengers 7: This is such a fun book and this story would work whether there was an event or not.  The battle against the mind controlled Red Hulk begins and things get out of hand really quick.  To explain anything beyond that would spoil the fun surprises in this issue.  The dialogue is great, the battles are fun, and the whole experience of reading USAvengers is a treat.  The art is also great, especially when it cuts to Squirrel Girl explaining part of the story with silly stylized drawings.  This is one of the rare books that makes me happy to be reading this event.
Doctor Strange 22: Thankfully this is better than the previous Strange issue, but it still drags on with terrible jokes and bad action movie dialogue. Doctor Strange and his crew team up with Kingpin to find some new magic McGuffins to break their way out of the darkforce dome.  It takes a long time to move forward and the ending is cliché.  The art is mostly good, but the facial expressions are terrible. It is possible this will be an important story in the course of this event, but it isn’t a fun read.  If thse tie in issues are any indication of how this series normally rolls then you would be best off avoiding this series and reading some of the previous, better, Doctor Strange comic book runs.
Captain America: Steve Rogers 18: This story fills in a bit more around the Atlantis timeline of events. setting the ‘Brave New World’ story prior to this and Secret Empire #4 right at the end of this issue.  The story is almost non-existent with Namor reflecting on his actions and Steve Rogers give a long winded, but empty speech at the UN.  The art is fine except for some of the faces and tensed muscle close ups that just look silly.  This is a good tie-in story due to actually adding to the main storyline and while it is a little bland it isn’t that bad of an issue.
Mighty Captain Marvel 6: The story continues with the team trying to find a way to communicate with people back on Earth.  The rest of the issue ties into the lack of morale and supplies that are slowly plaguing the Ultimates team.  The writing is great and it makes you feel for the team as they deal with this war of attrition.  Adding to that the great art and you have a wonderful book that I can’t wait to see  this series get past this event and tell unique stories.  This is well worth the read even if you have given up on Secret Empire as a whole.
Secret Empire Underground #1: This should be the last of the one-shots, though why each of these were not placed into a single series showing different sides of the war is anyone’s guess.  Like the previous reviews of the one-shot tie-in stories I don’t let the stupid numbering influence my review.  This is the full story of the Underground going to the Savage Land which is synopsized in the 5th issue os the main series.  The writing is good and the banter is fun as the team tries to get the cosmic cube shard from the rulers of the Savage land.  The art has a more cartoonish slant to it, which works for the mostly silly adventure.  This is a humorous side story that does flesh out part of the main series making this a great read for completionists.
All-New Guardians of the Galaxy Annual 1: Wow, that was a whole bunch of pointless.  The story follows the Guardians as they team up with Yondu to find a weapon that can break the barrier around Earth, spoiler they don’t.  While the dialogue is enjoyable, but this isn’t all that entertaining of a story because you already know how it will end since this is a tie-in book and not part of the main saga.  It feels more like a side-story from the movies than a part of the Secret Empire event. The art is fine with a cartoony style, but the action is very static.  Overall, this is a waste of time whether you are reading the New Guardians or if you are reading Secret Empire.

Was it just walking around one day when it decided to become lunch? ? plus they taste good You were always told that dragons where monsters that scorched the earth and sky alike but now your standing here arms deep in a corpse of one The first dragon you've ever slain, and its wings are actually alot smaller then you thought If your parents could see you now, how proud they would be They'd probably question their training however, and rightfully so but still you had this one in the bag all along to realize, be it hook, spear or net, the dragon had little chance of escape With your own particular set of skills, you have this wyrm failling to a blow from above Year 600 You meet mr Average Person (read:secretary) early in the week with the to-do list every sunday you have to go over everything with him and give some sort of idea of what the team is going to work on two months from now or the intense studies of the Purple ichor's amazing healing properties? Of the remaining human race half of them are girls hmmm 1 in 4 now that probably isn't right If your more of gun nut check the lastest firearms at [kroger market] beer !!! if i were a teamate in this, what would my role be? (ans: Captain Kirk) if you don't find the quest fun anymore you can get The big you go, the harder it gets and more danger you're in with the law getting in your way many snatchers have been shanked because they tried to use deadly force Common based snatchers are in it for a quick buck, so as such they won't try to take on an entire orc tribe by themselves They'll hit lone caravans and small to mid sized groups of merchants Most cases the black market isn't a criminal underworld full of dangerous felons and relentless mana-vampires as it is a bunch of bored immortals trying to pass the time One of these things is the demon market, located in the third layer of hell (dashit) , with a 50% savediscount! As the thief harvest goes on, something a bit odd stands out to you In each and every case of missing persons a lot of them were last seen in the area around Kroger's region That supermarket is either running a regular scam or is involved in this somehow It wouldn't be the strangest thing you've seen, and it certainly wouldn't be the worst crime organization By questioning the store manager, it becomes clear that he knows exactly what's going on at your supermarket The hell is this? This smelly bigfoot goes by many names, from dogman, to the grizzy, to bigfoot, yet in all cases it is all the same creature Some say it's a werecreature of some sort while others believe them to just be a rare species that has managed to avoid discovery all these years But fact is, they look like bigfoot and that's good enough for you with the scope With this mode, each gun has a different "feel" to it You'll need to spend some time with this to master precision shooting There's aiming on the move, finding your range, and many other types of shooting Since you've only got the one shot, make it a good one To shoot or not to shoot With a deer carcuss near it You find the creature standing outside for some reason with one shot Not such an easy task, considering you're pretty far away Your standard iron sights are going to have to do since you don't have an optic for this gun It's a bit tough since when you use this gun from the hip it's over 20 pounds, so getting your aim steady is important Fortunately for you there's no wind so you just have to account for your lateral movement and launch the round There's fur, blood and entrails everywhere It's easy meat to take back and sell, which is important, because you're not getting it for free after your hunt congrats op you've more than doubly profited from this encounter Choose: deer skin or alligator skin Oh ick totals Maybe this game would be a little easier with higher caliber guns, or at least ones that can accept scopes The noise really isn't worth it though since all you're doing is driving away any game in the area In the future it might be worth going furless, but for now all those useless bits can be turned into ichorium explosives , as usual So, loot and sell the gall bladder, liver, heart, intestines and maybe even a tooth or two Keep these offable parts in your pack until you get home, then put them in the fridge If you need more storage get a cooler or upgrade the house comes, sell more parts to him then cook dinner for you and your buddy While preparing the meat for cooking have some guests come over They brought a few six packs of brew with them Go ahead and share the wealth You should put it in your new fridge After eating, showing off a bit and having a generally good time its time to hit the hay You fell asleep on the couch so move yourself to the bed at 12 99 a person Ohh monetization Tonight's profit: 2168 ichorium shares, 8 silver, 4 quarters Days passed in the marsh and you still don't have Clyde or Fen just a lot of wet feet You do however have eaten everything in your fridge even the bait, so you're going to have to get more food or eat something inedible again like the alligator fleshes you've got hanging around The thought haunts you throughout the day and night It's really throwing off your concentration, you can't wait for this time to be over so you can bag a couple of wyverns First thing in the morning you sharpen your rifle and put on your pack This is going to be the day Not once, but twice people from the fort come and see if you're around and suddenly everyone wants to see me And they'res not just a few people they're like 18 of them You were out hunting so you weren't around to whlect their calls, replys or even show up while prying eyes were watching Instead they get your mildly annoyed brother in law to talk to them They leave dissapointed and unanswered Then you jump in and make things worse You wander into the fort to pick up a few things at the store and who do you find there? The same two wyvern jockeys that approached you To your surprise they knew you were out here, but even more surprising was what one of them said while the other looked on in silence "We would've been better off if you hadn't helped us at all Did I really do that much damage? You tried to wave them off and assure them of the contrary but they left shortly there after You could only hope they would come to appreciate what you did for them in time Just then an all too familiar symbol caught your attention, staring up at you from a wanted poster it was Clyde! Or rather Commander Ram himself If you wore a mask around here people might mistake you for someone else But what does it say about us that someone like him was able to take charge in the first place? You were Clyde There was no denying it But you couldn't hunt him down, not after what happened The poor sap that did finally catch up with him on that wanted notice looked a lot like Mason, even had a family resemblance It wasn't him, but it could've been What would you do if you found him, put a gun to his head and drag him back? It was a tempting idea but he probably wouldn't get far and in your current mood you might not be able to bring yourself to help if someone else was beating him to within an inch of his life It was shameful, but the best thing you could do for him right now was stay away However he still needed to be brought to justice, the way he was gallivanting around the countryside rounding up god knew who and throwing them in his cells was bad for business People would begin to unite against him and that could be far worse bandits, mercenaries, wary townies, kobolds all with one collective ideology: Fear Something you only engendered towards yourself and justified with your greater purpose To lose that power could cost you your survival! No, Ram had to be brought to justice, but not by you The best way of erasing your past was to put some distance between it and yourself You'd head west, maybe head out to sea or even up north to where the gnomes and their contraptions came from A new frontier, there had to be one yet untapped But before you could begin your new life you had to make one last trip out to the woods and see how Detlaf and Ranon were progressing on their logging town (You didn't want to go out there again ever but beggars can't be choosers ) You found them both cutting down trees like it was going out of style, which with the influx of new settlers it very well might Seeing you ride up they finally take a break You didn't really have to, but it was a convenient excuse to just sit there pulling up your shirt sleeve and scratching at your glowing badge of honor Your beam of light may have been gone, but it would never fade from your arm You came to accept that, you only wished you could do the same with the scars that wrapped around your back Still, the badges were going to come in handy as you've managed to use them as a conversation starter "See something you like Mason?" Ranon playfully sneered while waggling his eyebrows He probably didn't even realize what he was doing but you just let it slide and carry on with what you needed "That town you were working on looks like its coming along well "Town?" Ranon said with some pride "Haram, it's a city now King Sylvester himself stopped by recently to give his official endorsement Lot of people flooding to it You were genuinely happy for both of them but the news did stop you for a moment A whole another kingdom? If a place that big could form that fast just from one bandit gang then wherever you end up things were going to be very different Actually now that you thought about it considering how big the kingdom must be there was probably anothere bandit gang somewhere else doing much the same thing you were Bandits: Been there, done that It probably hadn't even been a year yet and already the game was up Well in for a coin, in for a Rai-ken You had made your decision and your destination doesn't matter as long as its a new frontier and they needed doctors right? Well maybe you'd stick to frontier clinics, but that was still medicine Might even get to put those old bandit skills of stealing from the sick for the good of the community Time would tell In any case you had some people to see and from there you'd make your plans Your next destination was Rask and then beyond it! Or so you thought Funny how things worked out, but it was the calm before the storm You laid down to sleep on your bed one night and then you heard a loud noise followed by the house shaking as if there was an earth quake going on Your rabbits in a stew because none of the furniture broke but everything ended up in disarray and broken pottery was everywhere One of your manticores came running in from one of the other rooms having been spooked by the noise if the trampled flower vase and rolling obei seeds meant anything You were still half-awake and pretty startled yourself, but instincts kicked in and you moved towards your rifle, thinking it was hostiles or something By the time you got into the living room and realized what happened it was over And just in time too, because you heard Naji let out an unearthly shriek of pain from her bedroom next door

ALSO.. effective strategies for acting proactively. basically the issue here is that the TOTAL EFFORT = START_EFFORT + TASK_EFFORT. so how do we minimize the start effort?
Well essentially, we want to mechanize “momentum”. You dont really have to pay the start cost if you are immediately going to do from another task.
Additionally, we want to look for all opportunities to make Proactive Choices simply at all. Each time we do that we are exercisizing the brain muscle for doing so, making it easier to be Proactive as a general behavior.
1)  BATCHING TASKS - plan out doing a whole bunch and then do them all in a row (plan them appropriately to enable this, IE dont put more than 4 hours of task on one batch). You only have to spend the “START” cost once! Just be sure to visualize the batch as like, all One Thing youre gonna do. Now the start cost is a way lower % of the total effort than before.
2) DIVERT TASK- ok so.. you know how we like to pla games we’re comfortable in and not new ones bc its like.. oh i dont feel like playing that game -RIGHT NOW-? well. first of all, this is an act of Proactivity Training. second of all, if you include this as the first part of a batch task (which a proper limit! this can be dangerous if you first-time checkout an addicting game. but ellen says she has a lot of success doing this with games that kick you out after a session, like those 1 session roguelites and such) it’ll be easier to start bc the first task is fun. but also, doing this in general is still training proactivity.
3) SIGNALS - I mean, delegating proactivity to reminders can transform them from proactive tasks to reactive tasks. one of the big pains is the stress of always juggling the awareness of the task in our head “oh i really need to do this art” and then simply carrying the thought for weeks and weeks. This helps with that.
Ellen says she has an easy time doing laundry bc she does it automatically when her basket is full. Basically anything that is a properly acted on response to a signal can turn a task into a Reactive one. I think this approach wont necessarily reduce the Proactive Action start cost but it still is good as a way to reinforce against slipping, and to reduce the pollutive effect of individual events. But honestly, I want to be able to live my life where I actually do things when I think I should do them, sometimes spontaneously, not have to end up relying on 100 different alarms.
---------
But aside from funny strategies like batching/diverting etc. I think, just getting into the practice of following through on ANYTHING that is doable in less than 15 minutes the moment you think “ah, I really should do that”. These little things will be an easy way to train against task aversion (easier than going out for haircut yeah?) which I feel like is what I REALLY want.
Remember, the reward isnt just that you finish it. Its that you will have a Lighter Existence after, and you will be gaining that PRECIOUS xp in “do a proactive task”
I’ve managed to effectively adopt behavior like this before. Once I seriously overcame a large amount of social anxiety simply by successfully using the anxiety as a dowsing rod of sorts - by intentionally doing the things I felt that -specifically flavored- emotion of irrational fear on. (which for me was basically, initiating conversations) Not for the reward of the action (I expected to come off as awkward), but for the practice of doing so.

Moodboard
To start our mixed media workshops off, we firstly were each given a word pulled from a hat. My word was ‘INNOVATION’ - meaning a new idea/device/method. From here, we had to produce a moodboard using anything we wanted (printed images, words, collages, colour palettes, magazine cutouts etc).To begin my moodboard, I wrote out a list of things the word innovation brought to my mind. This list was as follows:
brain → thoughts → cogs → lightbulbs inspo → ideas → imagination creativity success → business technology → medical advances → mechanics → prosthetics → bionics transformation → rearrangement → change → alter
From here, I chose the starting points that I felt were most interesting, which to me excluded the business/success area, and went more for the transformation and medical advances area. Then, I began to find images on the internet of prosthetics and bionics, as well as items I felt fit into the transformation and ‘new idea/device/method’ definition. This included things such as smart textiles → thermochromatic beading, uv fabrics etc; innovative packaging and product designs → new ways of lighting and packaging every day objects; as well as completely out of the ordinary architecture.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
I also wanted to include prosthetics, so brought in 3D areas - adding nuts and bolts to represent the machinery and torn sections of latex and skin coloured balloons to replicate this.
Tumblr media
Alongside this, my moodboard included words cut from magazines, which focussed on the element of creativity and superiority → ‘more features’, ‘more space’, ‘confidence within’; all which make me think of something that is a new idea/method - whoever came up with the innovative idea had to have the confidence to do so, hence the ‘ahhh!’ and ‘behind the nonsense’, and the ‘we the people are the work’ motif; and the idea itself must have been better than older ideas in order for it to be new, hence the repetition of ‘more’ and ‘stare’.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
From here, we are to use the ideas from this moodboard to produce a piece of non permanent art to install at college, surrounding our individual word: innovation.
Tumblr media
Art Bomb
The second mixed media workshop was to produce a non permanent art piece to be placed around college, using any media (but not painting on walls etc.). We were to make our statement as a piece stemming from our moodboard, therefore my piece was to represent my theme ‘innovation’.
My plan for my piece was to produce a bionic hand, following this inspiration image that I found when creating my moodboard, seen above. I was to create the hand and ensure it stayed light enough to be able to adhere it to a window, allowing me to draw the ‘computer screen’ surrounding it. To build the hand, I used newspaper bunched and rolled up to produce each singular finger joint and the palm of the hand. Then, I attached each joint to a straw, keeping the finger print end of the finger connected to the bending section of the straw, and the lower part of the straw connected to the palm of the hand. I attached each finger using masking tape and continued to wrap the tape around the palm to ensure they were secure. Once the base was done, I then covered the structure in paper-maché, to make it more sturdy and one piece.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Once the maché dried, I went on to paint a base coat of emulsion to block out the newspaper print; before then painting the hand using metallic acrylic paint, following the pattern for the joints on the inspiration image. As I painted the structure, I came to realise that the hand was too messy, and the maché had given a rough, folded texture which I didn’t think suited the point of the piece. Instead of continuing to build up the base and trying to make it smoother, which simultaneously would continue to thicken up the fingers - to the point where they were too thick for those of a bionic hand. To move on, I started over again, this time using a different medium as oppose to newspaper and paper-maché - clay. This would allow me to get a much smoother finish, and would allow me to make the fingers as delicate as possible, something newspaper wouldn’t allow me to do. I made each joint and finger separately, as above, then assembled them into the palm of the hand using thin floristry wire. Once air dried, I was then able to paint the structure. I used the metallic acrylic again, firstly painting a base coat of light silver all over the hand.
Tumblr media
Then, I went in with a mixture of silver and black for the shadows between each joint. I continued to do so for the patterns across the rest of the hand.
When thinking about this further, I decided that I hadn’t captured the look I had hoped for, and much preferred the style of the paper-maché hand, regardless of how textured it was. I returned back to the original hand, and painted the joints similarly. For my final outcome of this workshop, I photographed the finished hand on an acetate futuristic touchscreen, seen below. with an edited gradient background (done in photoshop).
Tumblr media
Whilst I still really dislike the texture, I am much more pleased with this outcome as I feel the joints are much better placed and the position of the fingers is considerably more realistic than the clay hand.
Oil Paint
Our third mixed media workshop was to produce a self portrait using oil paints. We began by coating our board in a layer of emulsion, to give the oil paint something to cling to when painting. After this had dried, we went on to use modelling paste (a mixture of PVA, white acrylic and talcum powder), pushed through a stencil, to produce a raised 3D pattern on the board. This would add an interesting element to an otherwise flat surface. My stencil produced tiny squares and oblongs, a pattern I liked, seen below.
Tumblr media
Although I have used and loved oil paints throughout my A-Level, I found this particular technique of layering yellow ochre and burnt sienna as base shadows beneath the fleshy tones a difficult and lengthy one, which I didn’t particularly enjoy. Using the oils watered down considerably with white spirit meant that we were able to continue to layer as much as we wanted to get deeper base tones, but overall to me meant I was struggling to get a strong enough colour when it came to adding actual colours and skin tones, meaning my outcome had a very strong ochre tinge to it which I didn’t like. In past experiences I have found oil to be thoroughly enjoyable and easy to work with, but this technique just didn’t work at all for me. I liked the looseness that drawing our outline with a thin wash as oppose to pencil gave us, however I didn’t think this made up for how ineffective the end outcome was, therefore I wouldn’t use this layering technique again; but it hasn’t put me off using oils and this is a well loved medium for me which I will definitely return to in my development.
Tumblr media
Paper Making
Our next mixed media workshop, was to produce our own homemade paper. Once made and dried, we will then use our paper for our upcoming life drawing classes, alongside our graphics and print workshops; and in our general development. The paper making process was as follows:
Cut up lots of paper into small pieces.
Fill bucket with water three quarters of the way.
Put the chopped paper into the bucket and churn with the paper churner.
Fill a large tray with water.
Pour the churned paper into the tray.
Use the sieving frame to scoop paper and drain the excess water.
Transfer the paper to a J-cloth on some newspaper and add any extras (eg. plants, flowers, petals, glitter, sequins, magazine clippings, string, thread etc.) ensuring they aren’t too chunky.
Make sure to ‘pin down’ the corners of the extras with some more of the churned paper.
Place a J-cloth on top and drain excess water, then remove it and leave the paper on drying rack to dry.
I have used this technique before, in A-level, which I used to print on, and it was very effective. Due to producing a whole class batch this time, as oppose to doing exactly what we wanted with a tiny kitchen blender as I had in the past, we were all using the same dye batches and therefore were limited to the colours/extras we were to add in. For this reason, I concentrated on using the plain white tray of paper, and adding in petals and flowers and patches of separately done dyed paper. The first sheet, seen in the scan below, was white with patches of teal and purple dye. I then added in purple flower petals, and matching ripped up sections of teal paper. I really liked the petals, and felt they worked well. The paper was quite thin, which is what I wanted, and ended up to be fairly flat, meaning I will be able to use this one for life drawing/printing on in future workshops.
For the next sheet, I added mini pieces of jigsaw, yellow flower petals, and tiny mixed ripped strips of orange paper. On top, I added glitter, as previously I have liked the look of glitter, however here I regretted adding glitter, as it was too thick and messy looking. I thought the pieces of jigsaw were effective, and using the two tones of orange paper was too, as were the petals.
For my third piece of homemade paper, I experimented with inks, filling a pipette with red and squirting it all over the page, then doing the same again with black. Then, I added glitter, not knowing that in hindsight I wouldn’t like the outcome. Whilst I quite liked the colours I had chosen, I think this was by far the least effective of my papers. The inks just looked messy, and didn’t bleed into the page as much as I had hoped, leaving exact lines and squiggles which I didn’t feel was very effective.
For my fourth and final piece of homemade paper, I used the yellow communal dye tray. This was by far the most effective and my favourite outcome, as the whole sheet was coloured, and my additions of matching yellow petals, leaves and threads were very effective. I will definitely be using this sheet for the printing and life drawing workshops and in my future development.
I additionally produced a 3D cup from my paper, using teal coloured paper, and moulding it around a plastic cup. I then left it to dry, and once done removed the plastic cup from the inside, leaving me with the cup itself. I felt this was very effective, and was inspired to do so after researching Brittany Spencer, a paper maker who produces 3D pieces, reminiscent of childhood, seen below in her ice cream sculptures.
Tumblr media
My cup is pictured below. I didn’t actually expect this to work, so in fact I am actually very pleased with the outcome, and would like to further develop this, perhaps adding more than just paper to the object.
Tumblr media
To finalise my experience, I would definitely use the paper making technique again, now knowing that the particular type of glitter I used wasn’t effective, and that petals worked well. Mixed tones of paper was more effective than using only one colour, and matching the colour of petals/leaves to the colour of paper also worked best. Overall, colouring the dye tray itself as oppose to adding pipettes of ink worked the best, and therefore this is what I would take further when producing my own homemade paper again.
Mixed Media Sculpture with artist Mark Gibbs
For our fourth mixed media workshop, we were introduced to Mark Gibbs, a mixed media sculptor, who focusses on using wire, recycled electrical goods, cardboard and newspaper to produce his work.
Gibbs first explained his own practice, and challenged us to use ‘contextual analysis’ to analyse his work, trying to pick apart the layers in one particular piece to uncover the meaning behind it. Although I found this very interesting, I do disagree with his view that all art has to have a clear, easy to see story/thought behind the piece. I think this is a very set opinion, and realistically in the real world there is a great deal of art which can be appreciated without clearly being something very specific. There are lots of pieces with meaning behind them, which I covered a lot in my A-level, like Marc Quinn’s ‘Self’, which doesn’t need to be so obvious to have a very deep and thorough meaning behind it. I feel that these sorts of pieces, with meanings that have to be researched to be fully appreciated, as oppose to pieces that very clearly bit by bit tell a story, which I prefer considerably, and appreciate a great deal more; however this is just differing opinions.
Then, we were told our pieces would depict ‘Craft&Conflict’ and that we were to choose an animal of significance, and an item of ‘military technology’, so I first set about producing some initial sketches of my ideas, in which I wanted my focus to be English Fox Hunting, as my conflict. I chose this idea as I felt it was a different kind of conflict; being more animal rights based as oppose to being ‘military’ as such. My choice of military technology was a gun, and from there I had to choose which animal I wanted to create to go alongside it. I had some options, seen in my sketches below, but settled on the main animal, the fox itself.
Tumblr media
From here, I began to build both, steering away from the use of newspaper and paper-maché, and instead challenging myself to use the electrical wires and stiff chunks of cardboard etc. in the same way as Gibbs. This was a new technique for me, and I realised that attaching the wires required hot glue, which looked very messy and took away the more raw, natural aspects of the work. I found the cardboard not malleable at all, and as equally hard to work with as the wire. I felt that it was very hard to make the pieces look professional, and no matter what I did I couldn’t get anything to look anything other than childish. I felt that my choice of creature and weapon meant that it was hard to make anything very intricate and detailed, emphasised more so by how difficult I found the materials and technique to work with.
We stopped halfway through our making, and did a whole class crit, in which we each left a sheet of paper out to allow people to write their thoughts on our piece so far. Below, is my page from the crit, with people’s opinions on my piece so far. Gibbs explained that it is good to give both positive and negative points, and that as we grow as artists its important to be able to defend our pieces and explain why we have done certain things. I am pleased with my responses, particularly the ‘the fox looks sad’, and at the time I hadn’t clipped the fur yet so I understand the hedgehog feedback. One thing I didn’t understand, was how there was an element of humour, as I felt that a gun was probably the least humorous object, and couldn’t see any humour in the fox either, other than the large spikes.
Tumblr media
After the crit, we were able to go back and continue with our pieces, where I built up some more extra details on the gun, and trimmed the foxes’ fur so they no longer resembled ’spikes’. Below, the fox and gun can be seen separately.
Tumblr media
Overall, whilst I’m not particularly pleased with my end result, at least I now know that I find this style of working, technique and mediums hard to use, and that it is easier to work on a much smaller scale to allow for more intricacy and detail. I won’t be using this any further, but working alongside an artist and having a first proper crit was interesting and a learning curve.

Craft&Conflict Exhibition
Tumblr media
As part of our workshop with Mark Gibbs, our produced work was then going to be shown as part of the Craft&Conflict Exhibition, in The Forum, Barrow. This exhibition is part of the Highlights Contemporary Craft Tour 2018, and featured the likes of Conrad Atkinson and Paul Scott, amongst others.
We entered the exhibition and began with a talk from Karen, the curator, who explained that the theme of conflict was to mark the 100th anniversary of WW1; addressing issues that affect us all. After the introduction, we were able to walk around and explore the exhibition for ourselves.
Some of our work from the workshop with Gibbs was on show (seen below), which was great and showed us an exact timeline of how art moves from being a concept, an idea, to a base structure, to then being a finished piece in an exhibition.
Tumblr media
Laura Moreton - Griffiths: Moreton-Griffiths’ work was by far my favourite of the exhibition. I loved her use of textiles and 3D structural work, and also felt that the bold juxtaposition between the soft materials and harsh reality of the war weapons the material depicted was extremely effective, making her work stand out amongst the rest; hence why it was my favourite.
Tumblr media
Matthew Day: Day’s work as a sculptor questions the taboo of missing limbs, celebrating them in plain sight. His pieces ‘explores the potential for limbs that move away from trying to replicate the human form’. Whilst I like the concept behind Day’s work, I didn’t feel that I necessarily felt they depicted ‘conflict’, and whilst the modern, more architectural take on prosthetics was effective and interesting, I didn’t feel very inspired by the work and therefore this part of the exhibition wasn’t my favourite.
Tumblr media
Paul Scott - Scott’s work took a different direction to the other artists’ in the exhibition; creating ornate ceramics - porcelain plates and bowls, depicting a range of issues; such as inserting nuclear and coal fired power stations into pastoral landscapes on the plates. Similarly to Moreton-Griffiths’ pieces, I find the juxtaposition between the delicate, intricate medium (ceramics) and the horrific, conflict based additions, seen below, very effective.
Tumblr media
Morwenna Catt - Likewise to Moreton-Griffiths, Catt specialises in sculptural textiles, seen in her installation of sweethearts and sandbags, seen below. Whilst I think the use of military fabrics and embroidery suits the piece, mimicking the small hearts traditionally created by recuperating soldiers in the wards of WW1, the work isn’t to my taste, as I feel it looks too busy, and somewhat childish.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Eva Mileusnic - Mileusnic’s work ‘Counter Flow’, seen below, represents pairs of migrants’ feet, produced from slip cast porcelain. I love Mileusnic’s work, as I feel the detail and meaning behind the piece, which can only be properly understood upon reading the description, gives the viewer a connection to each pair of feet, and an overall touching and moving aura. I also love how each pair is adorned with a different pattern; referencing the movement of cultures from one place to another, and showing how each migrant’s story is different.
Tumblr media
Overall, the exhibition was a good experience, and from here I have realised that I much prefer the pieces that depict moving, heartwarming stories that need further reading to understand (like Mileusnic’s) , and pieces that show contrast and juxtaposition through the use of materials and context (Moreton-Griffiths’/Scott’s). I think I will definitely re-visit Moreton-Griffiths’ work in particular in my future endeavours.

11/17/17
The dream centers around a building I’ll call “The Building” because it never had a name or real central theme. It’s a tall, Gothic building with many, many floors. It seems to have been fashioned into a science/office building, where several floors have several things within them. There are even rooms for classrooms and shops, but we’ll get to those soon. Thing is, with most large buildings like this one in my dreams, if I don’t go to the “right” floors, danger, or traumatic sights, is definitely imminent.
The dream starts in the dead of night, and I was with a group of people from my old high school in a high floor of The Building. The walls had a very soft white to it, and the floors were carpeted, with little throw carpets on top in soft purple-y colors too. It seems we were finished with a biiiig important test, and everyone was chilling and celebrating. They let us drink funny things and one of my teachers, Ms. Jackson, had an idea for me to help participate in. A more higher-up teacher had an office not too far from the hangout room, and so me and Ms. Jackson took a bunch of costume clothes from these racks and while the other teacher wasn’t there, we piled them into her room. She came in after one batch and she was happy for the gift. Though she didn’t seem to realize we just sorta shoved a bunch of costume-quality clothes into her office room and laughed. We were happy she was happy, but...
Anyway, the party was winding down, and people started going home. I was one of the last people to leave for some reason I’ve forgotten (cleaning up? Too invested in a conversation? Not sure) and I sorta chugged the rest of my drink and ran to the elevator with the last few people in it. I was nervous for some reason, and as the elevator descended, a gross, froggy voice spoke in my head. I think he merely chuckled but it was ominous. The Building was very dimly lit, and all the lights around me were short reaching green lights. The froggy voice chuckled again, and I was somehow alone as I walked through the small, dark backdoor garden. He chuckled louder and I saw a vision of the person behind the chuckle: he had green skin, a pinstripe suit, a hat to match, and a strong chin of sorts. His teeth I could barely see, but they seemed long started running towards the people I was in the elevator with that got ahead of me somehow. I told them about the voice and the vision and they said it was the Poison Voice. If you hear the Poison Voice it’s because you’re poisoned. They instructed me to go back into The Building for something. I ran back through the dark streets into The green-lit Building and walked in.
Someone from my Discord group was there, and they said they had to go to the bathroom, but was too scared to traverse this Building alone. My poison situation didn’t seem to be taken into account and sort of brushed off, and I offered to bring them to a bathroom. We go up a long flight of stairs painted in blue. The stairs were not built well: the railing was right in the middle of the stairs, and the stairs themselves were very thin. As we walk up the stairs, I see people in other floors working on whatever through windows in the stairwell: they wore lab coats, and some of the windows were terribly bloody. Some dark, wispy entities sized up the people in lab coats, but the people were unfazed. My friend was also unfazed. Somehow. We get to a bathroom in the floor where I had my test earlier and we walk into a ladies’ bathroom. They go in first and immediately turn towards the mirror. I was peeking in and they seemed to be talking to something. They told me to look and when I tried to go in, I seemed to have been blasted into the front entrance area. Everything was over for that scene, and the light that poured outside was soft and bright. It was daytime.
My boyfriend was there outside the entrance waiting for me. He said he wanted to show me something. Feeling full of energy suddenly, I follow him up the stairs. these stairs were painted red, and the rails were in a correct spot on the side of the stairs, and the stairs were a decent size. Instead of windows, we saw big, heavy doors with keypads or simply locks on them. Within we heard ominous groans, but nothing too terribly scary that we couldn’t ignore. We get to a floor I’ll call the Baby Floor. It’s called the Baby Floor because this area was for Youth Research (what the fuck you call baby science?????) and there was a long walled-off path with green slabs that had a baby logo on it, with some writing I never bothered to read.
After we get out of the walled-off path, we see a small area full of toddlers playing against a wall that was nothing but windows, I could see the city from this point, and it was slightly foggy. On the toddlers’ other side was a rack full of toys. My boyfriend took me to this rack and shuffled through some toys. I got distracted with a handheld of some sort, when he found the toy he was looking for.
It was a Meowth plushie, but instead of whiskers, he had red-colored fins. And instead of creamy white fur, he had calico-like fur, with splotches of red, yellow, and brown. My boyfriend told me this was the official Meowth of Milwaukee. I know he was probably referring to Anime Milwaukee? But he simply said Milwaukee, and I felt appalled but impressed. We have an official Meowth. He talked too, and the things he said...weren’t for kids.
“That’s nice n’ all, but where’s the poo~ooorn?” One voiceclip said. I got super embarassed because there were kids next to us. They didn’t notice though.
“[through pants] Is--is there a second episode? Is there a second episode?” That one made me laugh. He said other things, but I’ve forgotten. Some of my friends I associate with my boyfriend sort of showed up to see the Meowth plushie, and everything felt good n happy. I should draw this Meowth, yeah.
The Baby Floor also had a display TV, for like news n stuff. We decided to watch some of the stuff on the TV.
The last point in my dream is that there was a celebrity, some mix of Rhianna and someone else, who was doing fundraisers n stuff for things. She recently broke up with this dude and since then has done charities where she makes large pieces of art out of silly string. One of the last pieces I saw her working on (all from a helicopter view mind you) she was raising awareness about a film that expressed something about a disease...but the movie itself was so avant garde that it traumatizes people who aren’t fully ready to watch something truly unorthodox, and so the film was infamous for this. They started playing music from the film, and it sounded...very familiar...? But the tune is lost to me now...if only I could have remembered it.
--------------------------------------------------------*
EDIT: Thanks nat for reminding me of my other dream I had:
Before The Building dreams, I had a dream I went to a store that was being liquidated, and literally half the store was gone (no shelves, no products, just floor). I kept looking at the selection of what was left and kept noticing I saw the exact model of my wallet. At the end of the dream I bought something, and it turns out my account only has $600 in it. I worry, because that account allowed me to pay for my phone plan and other things. I considered going a little more fugal...
