@code-name-flamingo tagged me for 5 otps an age and a half ago, and then I mostly wrote it but abandoned it in my drafts folder? idek.
So, Sang’s Big Shipping Feels, most of which aren’t pairs and which in sum is gonna run super-long, so under the cut:
Holmes/Watson
David Balfour/Alan Breck
Papa Fitzgerald/Mama Fitzgerald/Aunt Bertha
Tin Woodman/Scarecrow/Patchwork Girl
Jack Harkness/so-many-people-so-many
Holmes/Watson: These two were real slow to grow on me -- it took a whole passel of ACD fic-writers to sell me on a particular reading of Watson and then of the relationship -- but once it took, it took hard. There are some caveats: I don’t ship them in all incarnations; whenever Mary Morstan exists, my shipping tends to run toward OT3 (more usually a vee than a triad); in incarnations where Watson seems obstinately straight (Private Life), my shipping runs heavily toward “It’s Complicated...” But, yeah. You don’t spend a year making that vid unless you ship them. Or at least I don’t.
David Balfour/Alan Breck (Kidnapped, Robert Louis Stevenson) When I was fifteen or sixteen, I spent an entire summer reading and re-reading the quarrel in the heather—
"This is a pity," [Alan] said at last. "There are things said that cannot be passed over." "I never asked you to," said I. "I am as ready as yourself." "Ready?" said he. "Ready," I repeated. "I am no blower and boaster like some that I could name. Come on!" And drawing my sword, I fell on guard as Alan himself had taught me. "David!" he cried. "Are ye daft? I cannae draw upon ye, David. It's fair murder." "That was your look-out when you insulted me," said I. "It's the truth!" cried Alan, and he stood for a moment, wringing his mouth in his hand like a man in sore perplexity. "It's the bare truth," he said, and drew his sword. But before I could touch his blade with mine, he had thrown it from him and fallen to the ground. "Na, na," he kept saying, "na, na—I cannae, I cannae."
—and swooning with the romance of it all. (Oh, I still swoon! Alan! Davy! Alan! and then Davy realizes he's torn it, it was all pride and stupidity and there's no apologizing for any of it, but he figures a little h/c might bring Alan back around, so he's all, "Welp, Alan, I guess I'm just going to have to die of exhaustion right here where I stand," and Alan is all, "Wait, what?" and Davy is all, "You heard me! DYING!" and makes like to faint, and Alan eats it up with a goddamned spoon and then they're together again FOR EVER AND EVER THE END, well, except that there's still a bunch more novel because they have to go get Davy his revenge and his inheritance and then they have to get Alan safe off to France, and okay realistically yeah they're star-crossed at best because Davy's a Campbell and Alan's a Stuart and civil war and politics and death sentences and whatnot BUT STILL. TOGETHER FOR EVER AND EVER THE END.)
...and thus I learned that if you have mortally offended your best friend, you can always try faking your death and that might help.
(*stern look at Holmes* By which I mean faking your death a little, not for three fucking years, you asshole. And no, you don’t get a pass on Dying Detective -- you should have gotten your act together before he got married.)
Mama Fitzgerald/Papa Fitzgerald/Aunt Bertha (The Great Brain): Apparently I was poly from waaaaaaaaaaay back, because it was always incredibly obvious to me that the correct number of parents is three. The narrator of these books is a child, and we never get much detail about the household beyond “Mama and Papa and Aunt-Bertha-who-isn’t-our-Aunt.” Neither are we told nor shown much about Aunt Bertha herself: she’s often only around the edges of the story, because she obviously considers the kids’ shenangians to be primarily Tom and Tena’s problem. Nevertheless, my 10-yo self totally believed that Tom, Tena, and Bertha were a triad.
Someday I might write a Tena/Tom/Bertha origin story, because the only detail we get about how their arrangement began is both intriguing and inadequate: she apparently walked into the Advocate office after burying her husband and told Tom that she’d be living with her and Tena from then on. I want their story, and I want it badly.
Tin Woodman/Scarecrow/Patchwork Girl (Oz stories) So canon. So fucking canon. As I wrote about them before:
The Tin Woodman says that his clockwork heart doesn’t do romantic love (and I believe him), but Nick nevertheless built his palace in the shape of a corncob and installed his-and-his thrones so he and the Scarecrow could rule the Winkies side-by-side. Also, if you listen to them talk, they may not be in love, but they are as affectionate and married as it is possible to be. In contrast to Nick, however, the Scarecrow is as smooshy a romantic as you’ll ever meet, and absolutely smitten with Patches. For her part, Patches enjoys the Scarecrow’s attention -- she’ll canoodle with him all night through! -- but she isn’t about to give up her footloose ways for him, either.
So. Do I believe that the Scarecrow is happily married to the Tin Woodman, while carrying on a long-distance romance with Patches? YES. YES I DO. Do I believe that Nick occasionally has fits of insecurity, but that he and the Scarecrow soothe them with the liberal application of TLC and tin polish? YES. YES I DO. Do I believe that Patches is having the time of her life exploring the world and sometimes drops by the Corncob Palace for a little mutual kinky needlework and to tell the Scarecrow stories about the things she’s seen? YES. YES I DO. And do I believe that all three of them are successfully getting the kinds of things they individually want and need from their relationships? YES. YES I ABSOLUTELY DO.
...and it’s not like I spend that much time thinking about these three, but they work, in a way that is really weird but also makes perfect sense for them. Which is pretty much how any relationship is going to work, when it works, isn’t it?
Jack Harkness/so-many-people-so-many (Torchwood)
Look, it’s Jack, he falls in love like breathing and is fiercely, deeply loyal to them all: he would lay down his life for any of them if he could, no hesitation, whether they’re currently together or not. Also, he is effortlessly poly and functionally immortal, and so we keep getting glimpses of people he loved once and loves stiI, even though the main part of the relationship is long past. I could never possibly rank one of those people over another, mostly because Jack would never conceive of doing such a thing himself. I know this is deeply contrary to how one is supposed to build lists of otp/ot3s -- how on earth do you specify a ship but leave some of the names unspecified? -- but when you ask me who I have Big Shipper Feelings about, I’m sorry, but it is what it is: Jack and all the people he’s ever loved, whether those relationships were long or short, platonic or sexual, explicitly mentioned in canon or not. Yes, I’m doing it wrong, but I do everything wrong, so whatever.
